Finn Demaco EJ's tone is not that difficult, just a variation on a standard Strat tone with more chorus, a slight boost on treble and good amounts of reverb and overdrive (not distortion)
EJs tone is more fuzz than overdrive with a tube screamer and actually there is very little treble, he actually turns his tone knobs all the way down in some performances, I keep my tone knob on my pedals and guitar down quite a way and I get a pretty close tone.
Lead used to be an over driven Marshall (treble, presence and bass usually turned down a good bit) w. a Tube Driver or Xotic AC Booster in front + tape delay. Tone on the bridge (.1uF tone cap) rolled back to taste, sans tone on the middle and you're basically there. Oh, and nickel strings to tame brightness even more.
after the crescendo and the high pinch harmonic...Guitar World and Guitar School Apr 1997, and Guitar for the Practicing Musician have the Main Riff at the 7th fret G position instead of the 3rd Fret Position,it was like they hadn't seen it on Austin City Limits!
That's true! 90's all of 90's what i've seen. I remember 2003,4,5 one of those I Remember when my bro said IT'S HERE PROPERLY! After high pinch harmonic it was always wrong..or other option it was More wrong in various places.
Except that EVERY time Eric Johnson plays the Main Riff, it is played at the third fret position"G"...Eric can be seen on the Austin City Limits live video of the song...but HIS way is more difficult because of a rather long stretch depending on your hand size, I have smallish hands and I have to play it at the 8th fret. What I was refering to were the tabs available for the song which are derived from the Chris Amelar tab originally published in Guitar School Sept. 1990 which has been reproduced over and over in other sources such as Guitar Pro etc.
In 10-15 years, all the kids that played guitar hero and actually started playing real guitar and stuck with it because they were passionate about it, will be amazing guitarists.
Pyrozuki True, but guitar hero has no more to do with why they might become amazing players than grand theft auto does. Someone who played real guitar for a year after playing guitar hero for a year is still just one year into their learning curve.
Not gonna lie, this is so scarily accurate and well done that I, and I shit you not, almost started crying out of happiness that someone finally nailed the phrasing and feel. Congrats Rick, you blew me away
LOL. I have been subbed to Rick G for a few years now, so thats why the following is funny: I see a random video for a Cliffs of Dover cover thumbnail with some dude on guitar. I'm like "ok sure, lets check this out". 5 seconds in: "nice tone, not bad". 17 seconds in "Oh dang, he's good." By 50 seconds in "man, this dude shreds, who is this?" Looks down and sees its Rick. "Oh....duh."
Absolutely perfect Rick. You even nailed the tone. Wow. Lick Library really needs to get on the ball and hire you to do a Learn to Play: Eric Johnson. It's LONG overdue.
His tone, his control, his picking, his attention to details, his ability to mute things down to keep it all under tight control while letting the one string his hitting sing loud and clear, ... effortless ultra fast but smooth picking ,but with attack on each note. It is not even possible. If you knew how hard this song was to play. ...even the main melody does not sound so hard, but in truth it is flying by because of all the little slide effects you have to do on that part. I am blown away.
When I see a guy play a huge song with such fluidity and flawless skill with a very light touch, I think this guy has put millions of hours in to hone his craft :)
to the 33 people who don't like this, how is that possible? he is dead on, if you heard this without knowing it was Mr. Graham I guarantee you would think it was Eric Johnson
This song is one of the most unique and well put together peices ever written for guitar, it's like standing under neath a legato waterfall, and Rick does it so perfectly, he does everything perfectly, what a perfect prick, just take a break there are other guitarists on the planet that want to feel as if they don't suck in comparison man ;___;
Dude, this is incredible. All I can say is you MUST have practiced just this for countless hours. I learned it back in 99 when it was first released and it took ME countless hours just to get it satisfactory and now I can Barely pull it of at all!! SMASHING job,my man!
Dude I can't even imagine how long it took you to learn, and master this song. Thank you for the time you put in and for posting this. It was time well spent.
Nice Cover and tone. I love the timing too, a bit like miles davis (meaning not perfectly in the beat but sorta laid back). It's really hard to get those fast pentatonic runs but you nailed it.
@Rick Graham Less than 300k views on this vid ?! Its the most perfect cover of the song and the BEST on youtube with respect to the ease with which rick plays this piece, the EJ like tone, the crisp guitar phrases, the art that guitar playing is ! Just unbelievable. Hats off Sir ! Respect ! Subscribed !
this song is extremely tough and heard many try to play it and they are all over the place and very dirty playing. Been wanting to see someone play with the same cleanness as eric. this guy did it! awesome job!
now do this standing up without looking .... I'm just kiddding ;) that was an amazing cover man you really got nice skills I hope one day I'll be able to pull that off and improvise like crazy (practice and patience ... practice and patience loll that's the key to success)
Everything about this is perfect. The playing, the tone, the effects, even the balance of the backing track mix is spot on to feature the guitar. Well done sir, an artist you are.
He is doing hard stiff picking to get all that tone, yet smooth as silk and fast as lightning. The stabilty of his right hand, and violence of left hand. He is obviously right handed, but his left hand is also fantastic. Each note is so clear. I mean CLEAR CLEAR. ...with no noise. He uses his amp well and knows how to find the sweet spots to make it sing so clearly. I love the hard stiff strength of his right hand. Reminds me of Steve Morse;s strong right hand but faster and more precise.
Well done!!!
6 years ago. Damn Kfir. Well done.
STEP DAD KFIR
Will you make one please????
Everyone is talking about him getting it right but I'm just surprised by how close he got with the tone
I was going to say, what gives Eric that ribbon-like tone is the fact that he isn't using much treble at all.
eric modifies his strats to add tone control to the bridge pickup that normally just sits at a default bright
Can we talk about how good the intonation on that guitar is holy moly.
Perfect 5ths never sounded so.... perfect
under rated comment, so true
You are the FIRST person that I've seen play the Main Riff correctly, all of the guitar mags in the 90's had it wrong ! Fantastic ...
after the crescendo and the high pinch harmonic...Guitar World and Guitar School Apr 1997, and Guitar for the Practicing Musician have the Main Riff at the 7th fret G position instead of the 3rd Fret Position,it was like they hadn't seen it on Austin City Limits!

Yes i know that, but I Like Mr.Graham very f***n Much more than tjhose Others. Matter of of opinion, i think..
There's no right or wrong way. It just has to sound the same. A riff (Not this) can be played in lower or higher position of the neck all the same.
My god, this guitar tone is so beautiful. Just the tone is art in itself, and the playing is sublime.
"No it's Eric Johnson"
Homer Bart i was about to say that. Fuck
OMG I KNOW!!!!!
Indeed
Perfeito 100 dúvidas...
0:00 - 4:11 how did you do that?
Doing it
Goes to 4:12
yeah but I know that part
+JMPIYA You are so.. @#&$^/& xD
pantlessguitarz xDDDDDD
Killer! Well done!!!!
Awesome!!!
A very tidy Left hand!!!
Thanks Pete!
Very nice. Thanks!!!
+Pete Thorn You and Rick should do a collab and blow every single mind on TH-cam :D
I got 100% expert on gh3
It’s almost maddening how relaxed his hands look playing a piece this hard. Amazing.
To play it right, you have no choice but to be relaxed.
It's crazy to watch because he makes it look so easy.
It’s called proper technique
Guitar hero was like the gateway into good music
and a generation of self-entitled "shredmasters"... but for good musical taste, its ok
***** Well what I liked about it is they didn't just put in popular pop songs and call it a day. They offered a decent variety.
Pyrozuki [cough] me [cough]
I’ve got the first part down! (0:00 - 0:01)
Batman And Robin I got (0:00-0:04) lol
Imagine having this talent ang going to "Open Stage Night"
Counting the open mouthed wild staring eyes.
Not gonna lie, this is so scarily accurate and well done that I, and I shit you not, almost started crying out of happiness that someone finally nailed the phrasing and feel.
Congrats Rick, you blew me away

"Oh....duh."
the same thing happened to me with a very old video of his, back when he had a lot more weight.
Absolutely perfect Rick. You even nailed the tone. Wow. Lick Library really needs to get on the ball and hire you to do a Learn to Play: Eric Johnson. It's LONG overdue.
His tone, his control, his picking, his attention to details, his ability to mute things down to keep it all under tight control while letting the one string his hitting sing loud and clear, ... effortless ultra fast but smooth picking ,but with attack on each note. perfect touch. no words.
best electric guitar piece ever. You nailed it!!
You need to listen to Frank Zappa's "Watermelon In Easter Hay" from Jones Beach, 1984. Equally brilliant and beautiful guitar piece.
Amazing right hand technique. You've put your time in dude. Very impressive. Very relaxed. Great job :)
Rick's fretting makes everything he plays so effortless...great technique. Wish I could fret like that.
I've watched this cover so many times. Something so inspiring about it.
This is probably the best cover I have ever seen of this. The technical display, the tone - and the feeling. Fantastic.
Rick Graham and Gustavo Guerra. The two most perfect guitarists on YT. And they both make it look so easy.
Awesome job Eric..uh I mean Rick! :)
Erick :)
When I see a guy play a huge song with such fluidity and flawless skill with a very light touch, I think this guy has put millions of hours in to hone his craft :)
to the 33 people who don't like this, how is that possible? he is dead on, if you heard this without knowing it was Mr. Graham I guarantee you would think it was Eric Johnson
flawless. got every detail. even EJ did not play this detail in his live show.
This song is one of the most unique and well put together peices ever written for guitar, it's like standing under neath a legato waterfall, and Rick does it so perfectly, he does everything perfectly, what a perfect prick, just take a break there are other guitarists on the planet that want to feel as if they don't suck in comparison man ;___;
Mark Wallace
He did botch a few notes pretty badly if it makes you feel better.
I wish it were legato, dude picks every fucking note lmao
@@randallflagg9659 and he's behind the beat all the way through..it's forced, not a natural flow..that said nobody does it better ...oh wait EJ.
A true master of the guitar. Few can do this with such clean movement giving as good a tonal quality as Eric Johnson himself. Glad I got to hear this.
Dude, this is incredible. All I can say is you MUST have practiced just this for countless hours. I learned it back in 99 when it was first released and it took ME countless hours just to get it satisfactory and now I can Barely pull it of at all!! SMASHING job,my man!
Awesome job learning this tune but it was released in 1990, not 99.
He was saying that he learned it in 99 lol
Jared he said he learned it in 99 WHEN it first released. So he misspoke either way.
Luke Davies I think he just meant around that time, in the 90s
Released in 1990.
Seeing this guy play is the reason I continue to play, Rick you are amazing!! Look forward to seeing/hearing more from you, keep it up Rick!!
best cover I've seen so far. really killer tone.
look for jack thammarat cover version and you will change your mind..
Excellent and wonderful playing! One of the best cliffs of Dover covers.
well done!!! probably the best cover of cliffs of dover on youtube.
fantastico Rick Graham is objectively a better guitar player than eric johnson. I dont like making it a competition but Rick wins.
Yes of course 👍🏻
Check out jack thammarat's cover
@@NarutoUzumaki-lv4vf Jack's is awesome for sure, but I think this one is more "authentic" I guess would be the word...
jack thammarat does a killer version
How does one dislike a perfect cover? You're the man Rick! EJ would be proud!
I forget now.....
Wow! Phenomenal performance of a great song! Thank you for posting!
Perfection.
You played every single note of this song. You're absolutely amazing!
salute to the rock lovers. well played
Dude I can't even imagine how long it took you to learn, and master this song. Thank you for the time you put in and for posting this. It was time well spent.
on point, amazing!
I love playing this song on guitar hero 3. keep up the good work!
That vibrato on 3:27.....Awesome !!
SO CLEAN
EJ could not have played this better himself. single most impressive guitar video I've seen on the youtube.
You're Vin Diesel aren't you....
No he is Groot.
It must be amazing for rick to go from just being 'that fat guy' to be compared to Vin Diesel.. Amazing job Rick!!
Rasmus Almlund xD laughed my ass off here
It's Van Damme actually :)
J Schecter True, he looks like him.
Fantastic , I wish I had the patience to learn it ...
This is a really nice 'Cliffs of Dover' cover (excellent work)
The best cover of Cliffs of Dover on TH-cam! All the tiny expressions that Eric adds are perfectly executed. An absolutely amazing performance!
Best cover I've seen/heard of this song. Well done sir!
Every nuance! OUTSTANDING!
Great job! That was very good!
Amazing...!!! Great job...!!!
Amazing cover!
wow...u are a true inspiration for the young musicians ..God bless u Rick..
Spot on mate, well done.
Keith Johnson you should check out maddie rice. She looks like she 14 when she played
Back again watching my favorite cover of anything there is on TH-cam.
Nice Cover and tone. I love the timing too, a bit like miles davis (meaning not perfectly in the beat but sorta laid back). It's really hard to get those fast pentatonic runs but you nailed it.
this just shows just what a monsterous guitar player eric johnson is. i see and feel the difficulties with this song even in the hands of rick graham.
Jesus jet skiing christ
You Sir. You just made me giggle.
Lol
Jeremy Medina hahahahahaahaaaaa i lol'd so hard
😆😂
Jumpin Jesus on a pogo stick
One of the GREATEST covers… PERIOD!!!
Sounds like the "original". Congrats!
Yeah it actually "did"!
Still awesome in 2017...and man, that tone and the clean play. Wow! Thumbs up!
wow!! Eric are you there?
@Rick Graham Less than 300k views on this vid ?! Another incredible performance by Rick Graham.
Putin playing guitar
Lol... really look alike..
In this video they look similar, but have you seen Dave Mustaine? They literally look fucking identical.
HDawg Supreme WTF
Benjamin Molina Rodríguez Did you look it up?
Putin on the ritz.

By far the best cover of this song on TH-cam
are you the same spanish fly guy?
Holy shit! You look great my friend!
One of the best COD performances I´ve seen on youtube. The tone of your guitar it´s pure magic.Congrats!
The same sound of Eric.
cough cough It is the Strat cough cough cough
I read that it was his Les Paul on the studio version.
He used two guitars. They switched because he wasn't happy with part of it. If you listen carefully you can hear the switch.
ithinkmynameismoose where is the other guitar. Its the same guitar all the way thru.
Eric does. Not the youtube guy.
Rick is the perfect blend of shred and feel
Just like the original congrats ;) How can we catch t his tone?
Simplified version would just be a strat and Bass to 2 and Treble to 0
dude you have a gift. been playing guitar for 18 years and, well, wow.
Great song, hard to play, and you nailed it; I wish I had your chops. I'd love to hear you improvise your own lines on it sometime!
Everything about this is perfect. The playing, the tone, the effects, even the balance of the backing track mix is spot on to feature the guitar. Well done sir, an artist you are.
Eric Johnson is the fuckin man.
Best “cover” of this on TH-cam
who is that girl sitting on that chair behind u bro?
XpSAN john cena

XpSAN Pamela Anderson.
i clicked 'view replies' in order to write near enough this exact comment but oh well.. bravo sir 😂
Gave me goosebumps!! Awesome playing and the tone was superb!
Putin killing it on the guitar.
The Best cover of this, hands down, finally someone got it right. Well done
Anyone heard the drumroll in your head at the start😊🎸
You nailed EJ's tone spot on for this song. This is THE BEST cover I have ever heard of Cliff's of Dover.
how can anyone dislike this? there are always haters haha
Sabastian Duke they are not haters, they are jealous people. ...
that's what haters are...
ChainsawChristmas you are right!
no whammy bar at 4:01... in guitar hero i used to whammy that note and it sounded like S**T .loved the detune tho lul
Sabastian Duke they are just jealous
the best take on cliff of dover I ever listened to, period
no its not!! this is real eric johnson music! its not cover! too damn good
Dude idc how close it is to how it’s really played, because it sounds so damn good. You know how to make that strat sing
Vladimir Putin????
Buff VLADIMIR

How are there dislikes? Do you not like his shirt? That white chair? What IS it exactly that you are disliking?
Ryan I think it's that his epic beard isn't a part of this.
Jealousy.
Totally captured the essence of it Rick. Awesome Job!! Spot on man.
Just fantastic!
absolutely flawless
cosmic passion of guitar licks. yeah viva Rick Rock
Everything about your playing is so tasteful and perfect!
hay your one of the biggest inspiration to me as a learning guitar player. never stop.
Absolutely bloody brilliant.
This is without a doubt the best Cliffs of Dover on TH-cam.
That smash at the end nailed it!! Amazing!!
