What a place this is! Our trip to Easdale Island was a fantastic day, partly due to the excellent weather we were lucky to get, but mostly down to the amazing location, which is stunningly beautiful and historically fascinating in equal measure.
Equally remarkable is the fact that Easdale is quite easy to get to, just 15 miles south of Oban, but when you're there, you feel like you're in another world, removed from everyday experience.
Easdale was once an industrial island based on slate quarrying. The evidence left behind by the industry is everywhere. At Easdale, unlike other places of industrial historical interest, you can see the remnants of the moment when the industry stopped, at least on the scale that it had been. The quarry pools, left over from the storm which flooded the quarries are like nothing I've ever seen and represent a moment in time when life changed here. Slate quarrying must have been a tough life at the best of times, but working down one of those quarries at 90m below sea level must have been terrifying! Outside of the quarrying, the weather on Easdale, on an exposed island looking out to the Atlantic, must have made for a hard existence a lot of the time and the hardship nearly led to the island becoming uninhabited.
In recent times, a resurgence in the population suggests a brighter future for Easdale, with a new community developing based around tourism and retail.
The islanders are seeking a community buyout and I wish them every success in achieving it. I have attached a link below to a site which gives more information on the island, its industrial and more recent history if you want to find out more about Easdale.

Wow! Magnificent and hauntingly beautiful location. The video shows the textures to perfection and the water pools so clear. You have captured this fascinating island and its history so well.
It is a very emotional experience.
