I will defend the Time War part from Day of the Doctor a bit. All of the build-up that we had for it was very high concept and any visualization of that could never live up to expectations. The version of the war that we got in Day of the Doctor was a very brief glimpse of a small portion from the very end of the war, to avoid trying (and failing) to depict all of the madness that had been mentioned before. Personally, my favourite depiction of the Time War comes from the short little piece that RTD wrote called Doctor Who and the Time War. It is some really high concept sci fi goodness that would translate horribly to a visual medium. Much in the same way people say Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror is impossible to film, so is the Time War. Moffat knew that and so he showed us very little of it, for that reason. We’d all have been absolutely pissed if we had a story set (at least partially) in the Time War, without showing it. The version we got manages to show us a glimpse of it without damaging the picture of it that had been built in out heads throughout the Davies era.

The Day of the Doctor has a massive flaw. The plot of the whole story is that three Doctors together are planning on wiping out their own species until Clara says "No, you're better than that, think of something else", and then they go "Oh, yeah, we should probably think of something else". It's a monumentally stupid contrivance which makes the Doctor look so dense that three of him together didn't think that they might be able to come up with a better plan than killing their entire race, but Clara the insufferable know-it-all is the smart one who thinks "wait, genocide BAD!".

I think which multi-Doctor story was your favourite depends entirely upon which one you experienced at the time. For me, they're events first stories second. I actually don't have a problem with Tom being the only classic Dr to make a cameo in Day of the Doctor. It's not favoritism on Moffat's part, his favorite Doctor is Davison I believe. It's just recognition of how much cultural impact Tom's Doctor had. Even if he's not your favourite you've got to admit he's probably the most iconic.
Even if tom isn't moffats favourite its still showing favoritism. Being the most iconic doesn't mean the best. Which is what the scene seemed like it was trying to push with the old favourites line. That scene would have meant so much more if they brought back the other doctors davison colin sylvester and mcgann. It's like there hard work was just going unnoticed and unappreciated. And if they could only bring back one it shouldn't have been tom. Because he didn't even appear in the 20th anniversary because of his big ego.
@@the5thdoctor I don't get how it can be favouritism if he's literally not Moffat's favourite. I agree most iconic or popular doesn't mean the best but there's no way of deciding who's objectively the best Dr so you have to go with the most iconic. Baker held the role the longest, his Dr is so recognizable even to lots of people who aren't Doctor Who fans. Plus Tom coming back after not being in stuff like the 5 Doctors or even Big Finish for so long is part of what made it such a huge deal when he did come back.
You are my hero, of the classic multi Doctor Who stories not only,( along with Varos) is the Two Doctors my fav sixth Doctor Who story its my favourite classic meet up up story. I love the slightly sick and dark humour, the Spain location is wonderful. The only problem is the tall egg heads, plus the make up is worse than the Time Warrior what gives. Great to have Jamie back too.
The three doctors is my favourite. It just seems to understand that the appeal of this kind of story is the interaction and the first three docs are such different personalities, it just works plus the main story hss a massive enough threat to warrant anniversary status.
"To win is to lose and those who lose shall win". Only the 1st Doctor could figure out that it was a trap set by Rassilon? GIVE ME A BREAK! It's the same man, same intelligence. The Three Doctors, definitely. Pertwee and Troughton are amazing together. I very much enjoy Tennant and Smith, but they're too similar to have the kind of chemistry that the prior two had. (Not that they should have the same chemistry, by any means.) The Three Doctors has my favorite TARDIS reaction with Sgt. Benton, and it has our first big look into Time Lord history. Omega is a phenomenal villain with screen presence that stands up to the two Doctors, and that is no small feat. I only started watching the show a couple of months before the 50th, and Netflix only had a few Classic stories. I saw Aztecs, Mind Robber, and Spearhead, and enjoyed each more than the last, but this was the story that made me a lifelong fan. It was the first Doctor Who DVD I ever bought, and it's my favorite story of all time.
I love that bit at the end of part 4 when the Doctors and Omega actually confront each other over the forcefield generator. All three of them feel like formidable forces in their own right, and the Doctors feel desperate.
My reaction to the 5 Doctors was the same. I had only seen episodes of Tom and Peter, so I was so pumped for it. I’m still angry about the whole stuck in a vortex. I think that’s why Day of the Doctor is my favorite. It’s got Tom for real instead of scenes from Shada. When I heard that voice I almost lost it.
I think the most frustrating thing about "Twice Upon A Time" is that it seriously steals some thunder from "World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls." That story is one of the best regeneration stories, perhaps just behind "The War Games" and "The Caves of Androzani", that now isn't technically a regeneration story because it stops short of Twelve regenerating. The thing is that the story would be just as satisfying if it ended with Twelve's regeneration. It would honestly be so easy to edit the ending of "Twice Upon A Time" onto "The Doctor Falls" and have it work just as well, if not better. Then again, that was a problem I had consistently throughout Moffat's run, even from when he started. He can never just let an arc or a character end. He has to round out their arc and then have a separate arc dedicated to them accepting that their arc is over. River has two or three different exits. Amy and Rory leave and then come back just to leave again. Eleven has his "Deep Breath" cameo. Twelve has a brilliant exit and then "Twice Upon A Time" only exists to fulfill the sheer obligation of the Christmas specials. Clara, of course. It's as if Moffat underestimates his audience's ability to accept that his characters have bowed out and feels the need to create "comfort episodes" just to break the news more easily.
1. Day of the Doctor 2. The Three Doctors 3. The Light at the End 4. Out of Time 5. The Five Doctors 6. Twice Upon a Time 7. All Flesh is Grass 8. The Four Doctors 9. The Sirens of Time 10. The Two Doctors Special mention to The Wrong Doctors with Colin Baker twice which would be somewhere in the top 5 I'm also really excited for The End of the Beginning
I think for me, TDOTD is the best Multi-Doctor story. The only thing I would change is to replace the Zygon stuff with more Time War related things, and maybe bring in The 8th Doctor too.
The five doctors was the first classic series episode i watched so it has a special place. But the three doctors is my favourite because you see Patrick Troughton playing the recorder in colour!
Agreed Wingy, the three doctors is a ton of fun. also agreed about the last time being genuinely excited about the the was for 2013, i watched the special at local Aussie time so about 6 in the morning
a lot of people complain about how day of the doctor doesn't have enough classic stuff but I don't get how they could've had more classic stuff in it, it's not like they could get a classic doctor bc they're all noticeably much older and might not have wanted to return
They all wanted to return. There's no excuse for it, esp given in The Moment they had the perfect device to feature all the old Doctors and even companions, and instead make it bloody Billie Piper (which doesn't even make sense, as Hurt's Doctor doesn't even know her).
@@codyw1 idk, it doesn't bother me cuz I see day of the doctor as more of a look to the future, it's about the doctor moving past the time war that defined the show since its return in 2005. Tom's appearance is great but I think if every doctor had shown up besides the first 3 it would've felt strange and would've cheapened Tom's cameo
I think all the multi doctor stories are at least good, but I'd say two doctor's is the weakest. Five doctors was the first classic I ever watch so it does hold a special place in my heart. Twice upon a time I feel is underrated and it does make me laugh despite the inaccurate portrayal of the first doctor's character in the writing. The three doctors is so much fun to watch and I love the fact Pertwee, Troughton and the Brig are all together. My favourite has to be Day of the Doctor though. Not only does it have huge implications for the future of the show (until 2020) but it's just a really interesting story to me and it doesn't feel so much like a gimmick. It's not perfect but it's just mint
I think with the Day of the Doctor people seriously understate the challenge faced by Moffat. It was pretty much an impossible assignment, with disappointment as the only conceivable outcome. Given all that, and the time pressures that were involved, it's pretty remarkable. And for me, I think back to how it felt on first airing and it worked.
I have a soft spot for Day of the Doctor as it was the first one I saw in an actual theater. That being said, the Big Finish audio multi-doctor stories need to be mentioned. They're all pretty good.
I think the fact that Twice Upon a Time was a last minute script is clear. He just threw everything at it because he knew this was his last episode, infact it came AFTER his last, so it wasn't months in planning like others. I do agree that The Two Doctors is great
Your nostalgia for Day of the Doctor is the same I have for The Five Doctors. For me that's the definitive multi-Doctor story, closely followed by The Three Doctors, It's sheer candy.
I remember that Tom did'nt even want to be in the publicity photograph for The Five Doctors, so they had to use a dummy instead, probably the one from Madam Tussaud's .
I was thinking about this topic the other night while out for a walk (as you do), and decided that they're all my favourite. EDIT: Now I've watched the video, I realise I forgot about Dimensions in Time and Twice Upon A Time. I'm downgrading both of those to non-fave status.
Dimensions in Time without a shadow of a doubt, mainly for nostalgia. I was 10 and had gotten into Doctor Who at the beginning of the year with the BBC2 repeats, so this was my first time seeing brand new Who as it aired. BBC1 was halfway through airing Planet of the Daleks with those little 5min shorts on before it, 30 Years in the Tardis was a few days away, these were exciting times for a kid who still had so much more to discover about the show. As an adult, I understand how it must have been disappointing for many fans, but for me at the time it was top drawer, a fun fast adventure that made me hungry for more Who. I must have re-watched it hundreds of times. And the EastEnders thing pretty much went over my head as I’d never watched it in my life!
I didn't forget anything, I was referring to Tom as in all teeth and curls as in the 4th Doctor but I understand why he side stepped the Five Doctors too soon after the event and all that plus he didn't like JNT
@@maxpower3698 The heart of the performance is still the same though. That rich baritone voice, the eccentricity... it’s still very much Tom’s Doctor Who, even if it is a future incarnation. So what if his hair’s different? You shouldn’t judge people on their appearances.
That it for dimensions in time review 😂 five doctors love it had the vhs brilliant been to a lot of places where it's filmed .i went to eye of orion last year yeah bit missed but fun opportunity that and 5drs ish brilliant
Journey’s End was definitely a multi-Doctor story as well. There was the meta-crisis human clone of the tenth doctor produced by the Doctor’s eleventh (and penultimate) regeneration energy. And also the “Doctor Donna” hybrid, who received part of the Doctor (of his mind at least). Call it the “Two and a Half Doctors” if you will. The duo The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End is one of my all-time favourite stories. So I’ll have to put it in a tie for top spot with The Three Doctors.
Five Doctors for me - has so many moments I love 😊🤩 But, you forgot; that episode of the Chase with the uncanny duplicate 1st Dr 😉 and also; Time Crash 👍🏻
I agree with you for the most part. In "Twice upon a time", I didn't like the way the first Doctor was portrayed either, but Moffat has claimed that all of his controversial lines were copied from lines originally spoken by William Hartnell. Even if so, he didn't have to pick out those lines to copy, but apparently he thought the result amusing.
Two things… was disappointed that Throughton and Pertwee have very little to no interaction with Susan- it’s the only time they see her again and it’s like en. Secondly, in the Two Doctors- Collin’s moment is genuine and emphasizes the secret missions the Time Lords sent The Second Doctor to do. Remember, it’s implied that the Time Lords wiped his memories of the secret missions during the exile process- so The Sixth Doctor wouldn’t remember having ever had a recall device. My fav is the Two Doctors for the interaction between the Doctors and both the Doctor interacting with Jamie (who accepts the situation as he accepts the Doctor as a Wizard) & and the dynamic with the Sixth Doctor, Peri, and Jamie. Jamie proves that that Doctor and Peri needed a strong third in the Tardis. The first two flowed more harmonically.
7. Dimensions in Time 6. The Two Doctors 5. The Five Doctors 4. Time Crash 3. Twice Upon a Time 2. Day of the Doctor 1. The Three Doctors 0. The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
I can't decide between three doctors and five doctors. The only disappointing thing about the five doctors was tom bakers absence. His big ego once again which a lot of people like john levene called him out on. Not wanting to share the screen with the other doctors. I do think the episode would have been better if robert holmes wrote it. But what terrence dicks did was pretty great. Especially with all the things he had to cram into the episode im surprised it worked as well as it did.
Dimensions in Time. Nothing else comes close. Well except for Curse of the Fatal death of course. (DotD + the Five-ish Doctors for me will always be special, and Twice Upon a Time will always be great for me)
Do the Watcher and the Valeyard count as Doctors? If so, Logopolis and The Trial Of A Time Lord should be added to this. Also there is the bit where the Pertwee Doctor and Jo meet themselves in Day of the Daleks.
The Day of the Doctor has a massive flaw. The plot of the whole story is that three Doctors together are planning on wiping out their own species until Clara says "No, you're better than that, think of something else", and then they go "Oh, yeah, we should probably think of something else". For me it wud be the three doctors, not a fantastic story but since it has my 2 fave doctors of all time (troughton and pertwee) on great form, and the brig, yep its my fave
I take it you don't count the 13th & Ruth Doctor combo (Fugitive of the Judoon)? I don't blame you if you don't, because I hated it too. But technically it is a multi-Doctor story.
When so many episodes from TMT’s run are missing, it’s great that he reappeared as Doctor Who in these stories. For me, it’s a toss-up between him and Tom as to the best ever Doctor Who
I'll go for The Two Doctors, I'm also a fan of season 22, some of the dark themes just elevate it up a notch. A pity the show was infantilised afterwards.
My ranking of all the TV multi-Doctor stories 7th: Twice Upon a Time 6th: Dimensions in Time 5th: Time Crash 4th: The Two Doctors 3rd: The Day of The Doctor 2nd: The Three Doctors 1st: The Five Doctors
Time crash?? If Dimensions in Time gets a reference this deserves at least that. Also imagine shitting on the past to emphasise how "progressive" you are now *cough* Chibnall *cough*. I think Twice Upon a Time could've worked better if it was in a similar vein to Heaven Sent with a very simple plot but that is ultimately a character driven, performance based introspective episode since Moff proved his talents with more abstract script like that and even things like Blink where we get unusual stand out episodes that really highlight the performances, especially Peter Capaldi. He's not my fav but the man is still light years better than his "successor" and Heaven Sent alone proves it. And yes if the 50th started with night of the doctor... that would add so much satisfaction for me xD
I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but my fave is The Two Doctors. I love the music, the campy Androgums, 6, 2, Peri and Jamie together. It’s a lovely story, and a good critique on meat eating.

My favourite multi doctor story is Light at the End, which was the Big Finish 50th anniversary special. And the reason is Big Finish is so much better than New Who and even, I would say, rivals Classic Who

For me, it's a toss up between Arc of Infinity and The Fires of Pompeii
I see what you did there
I actually don't have a problem with Tom being the only classic Dr to make a cameo in Day of the Doctor. It's not favoritism on Moffat's part, his favorite Doctor is Davison I believe. It's just recognition of how much cultural impact Tom's Doctor had. Even if he's not your favourite you've got to admit he's probably the most iconic.
not to mention hes the earliest surviving incarnation of the doctor!
My fav is pertwee but I agree and don’t mind Tom being the iconic one as his doctor is awesome
@@ljllob4740 if Pertwee was still alive he would be there!
We need to start a movement for wingy to review dimensions in time now. #wingydodimensionsintime
Maybe a live reaction shoot. Hahaha
"To win is to lose and those who lose shall win". Only the 1st Doctor could figure out that it was a trap set by Rassilon? GIVE ME A BREAK! It's the same man, same intelligence. They all should have figured it out, except for the 5th, since he was Borusa's prisoner. Kind of like how the 2nd and the 6th Doctor were able to figure each other's plans before saying anything to each other, or how they shared certain opinions about people and species in, the Two Doctors. Robert Holmes always was a better scriptwriter than Terrace Dicks.
2 Doctors is sort of a guilty pleasure for me, but I don't feel guilty about liking it.
I agree with you its the 3 doctors because of the Pertwee/Troughton dynamic
I would probably agree with you. The Three Doctors is probably the most enjoyable
1. Day of the Doctor
2. The Three Doctors
3. The Light at the End
4. Out of Time
5. The Five Doctors
6. Twice Upon a Time
7. All Flesh is Grass
8. The Four Doctors
9. The Sirens of Time
10. The Two Doctors
Special mention to The Wrong Doctors with Colin Baker twice which would be somewhere in the top 5
I'm also really excited for The End of the Beginning
Yep, Three Doctors. Thoroughly agree.
I think for me, TDOTD is the best Multi-Doctor story. The only thing I would change is to replace the Zygon stuff with more Time War related things, and maybe bring in The 8th Doctor too.
No Time Crash or Prisoner of the Judoon?
The five doctors was the first classic series episode i watched so it has a special place. But the three doctors is my favourite because you see Patrick Troughton playing the recorder in colour!

Twice Upon a Time
Agreed Wingy, the three doctors is a ton of fun. also agreed about the last time being genuinely excited about the the was for 2013, i watched the special at local Aussie time so about 6 in the morning
a lot of people complain about how day of the doctor doesn't have enough classic stuff but I don't get how they could've had more classic stuff in it, it's not like they could get a classic doctor bc they're all noticeably much older and might not have wanted to return
@@codyw1 I agree
The Five Doctors and The Three Doctors for me.
Time Crash is a good multi-doctor story, it represents the classic series better then ‘twice upon a time’
I think with the Day of the Doctor people seriously understate the challenge faced by Moffat.
Three and then Five are my favorites.
Thank you for the video!
Fugitive of the Judoon
The Timeless Children.
The Three Doctors is the best. I agree.
Top 3:
1. The 2 Doctors
2. The Day Of The Doctor
3. The 3 Doctors
2nd and 3rd are very close however.
Three Doctors i have gone back to and watched the most. Pertwee and troughton are just so great together.
you forgot about time crash that has both david tennant and peter davison good video
Surely the biggest crime is Tom never featured as the Doctor in an celebration story
He does in Big Finish, Light At The End and Legacy of Time as well as with David Tennant in Out of Time
@@Jake-d8d I'm aware of the Big Finish stuff but Light At The End had too many Doctors in it, its very disjointed
You’re forgetting his cameo in ‘Day of the Doctor’. The caretaker is clearly meant to be a future incarnation of Doctor Who.
Five Doctors for me - has so many moments I love 😊🤩
But, you forgot; that episode of the Chase with the uncanny duplicate 1st Dr 😉 and also; Time Crash 👍🏻
Hello Alex thank you for another great video
Should do your top 5 worst cybermen stories as a video
I would predict Closing Time or Nightmare in Silver will be on Wingy's list
I love it when you go against Popular Fan Consensus and say nice things about The Two Doctors
Back in the Tardis I see, not a green screen background or anything.
For me its Zagreus (ducks for cover)
No, you're good. That's a great choice!
Good choice
I loved that too, and it even had 3rd in it!
The Five Doctors was my favorite, with the Three Doctors a close second. Twice Upon a Time is last.
I agree with you for the most part. In "Twice upon a time", I didn't like the way the first Doctor was portrayed either, but Moffat has claimed that all of his controversial lines were copied from lines originally spoken by William Hartnell. Even if so, he didn't have to pick out those lines to copy, but apparently he thought the result amusing.
yes and they were taken out of context to MAKE him look sexist, most of the time it was a protective parent
Really enjoyed this one 👍
Fugitive of the Judoon is technically a Multi Doctor story 🤔
I was actually searching for someone commenting on this^^ Well I definetly think it's et least worth being mentioned.
You forgot Time Crash(2007). The 10th meets the 5th Doctor
7. Dimensions in Time
6. The Two Doctors
5. The Five Doctors
4. Time Crash
3. Twice Upon a Time
2. Day of the Doctor
1. The Three Doctors
(DotD + the Five-ish Doctors for me will always be special, and Twice Upon a Time will always be great for me)
Five Doctors. Love it
Without watching, gonna say rught now, its The Three Doctors
no time crash? 3 doctors is the best. troughton and pertwee together are brilliant.
Always been the 5 Doctors for me
Do the Watcher and the Valeyard count as Doctors? If so, Logopolis and The Trial Of A Time Lord should be added to this. Also there is the bit where the Pertwee Doctor and Jo meet themselves in Day of the Daleks.
The Day of the Doctor has a massive flaw. The plot of the whole story is that three Doctors together are planning on wiping out their own species until Clara says "No, you're better than that, think of something else", and then they go "Oh, yeah, we should probably think of something else". It's a monumentally stupid contrivance which makes the Doctor look so dense that three of him together didn't think that they might be able to come up with a better plan than killing their entire race, but Clara the insufferable know-it-all is the smart one who thinks "wait, genocide BAD!".
Day of the doctor 1 the three doctors 2 the five doctors 3 time crash 4 twice upon a time. 5 the two doctors
Why do I still talk about this show?
Because a lot of people that grew up on it still watch it, excitedly.
(Scarecrow! Fancy Pants!)
For me it wud be the three doctors, not a fantastic story but since it has my 2 fave doctors of all time (troughton and pertwee) on great form, and the brig, yep its my fave
Doctor who legacy of time for me and the three doctors
My ranking:
The Three Doctors (obviously),
The Five Doctors,
The Two Doctors,
Day of the Doctor.
That other one I won't mention.
I take it you don't count the 13th & Ruth Doctor combo (Fugitive of the Judoon)? I don't blame you if you don't, because I hated it too. But technically it is a multi-Doctor story.
Who said he hates it? He probably didn't count it due to not considering it as one.
What about Jodie Whitaker and that other woman who was retconned in as an older Doctor, obviously that's the best one. No doubt.
I like The Five Doctors the two doctors and twice Upon a Time
The Three Doctors is better than The Five Doctors, fight me.
My ranking of all the TV multi-Doctor stories
7th: Twice Upon a Time
6th: Dimensions in Time
5th: Time Crash
4th: The Two Doctors
3rd: The Day of The Doctor
2nd: The Three Doctors
1st: The Five Doctors
The Three Doctors easily
5 Doctors. Easy. Next?
Of the ones I've seen...
Fave: The Day of the Doctor.
Liked: The Five Doctors, (Non-canon: The Five-ish Doctors. Time Crash)
Heart in the right place: Dimensions in Time
(Amusing in places: The Curse of Fatal Death)
Outright Offensive: Twice Upon a Time.
The first and only multi Doctor they should have done!!
It's not the best...but I do have a soft spot for The Two Doctors.
My favourite multi doctor story is Light at the End, which was the Big Finish 50th anniversary special. And the reason is Big Finish is so much better than New Who and even, I would say, rivals Classic Who
I loved this. And at the end we had 1-3 as well. I was in tears listening to this. its all of them, all of them!!
It has similar problems to The Five Doctors in that they don't share much screen(sound?)time, but it's still great. Especially when Ace rattles off her descriptions of all the Doctors.
@@aloysiuswhiteboat2934 Well it depends what you want. It has by far a better plot than all of the TV ones, al it's my favourites
Although the 20th anniversary big finish (I think it's called Legacy of Time) is very close
@@thethreerailwayengines825 Light at the End was my first BF audio, so I'll always have love for it. I've only listened to Legacy of Time once because it's a hell of a time commitment, but I remember loving most of it. I don't think Tim Treloar is as good a Pertwee as John Culshaw though.
So did you hear
Sirens of time
Legacy of time
Light at the end
End of the beginning
Regeneration impossible
The four doctors audio and comic
As they all Count aswell
I mostly talk about the TV stuff only
The Three Doctors followed by The Five Doctors & Day of The Doctor
