    A few weeks ago, I decided that I want to change my whole career, from accountings to be a videogame translator. I still have to take the first steps, getting some information here and there about this career, and finding your channel was perfect and motivating at this time. Thank you all, I loved this video!

      I’m in more or less the same boat but instead of accounting, I’m currently a freelance writer. Hoping to switch gears and become a freelance translator in the future. Thank you so much for making this channel!! ❤️❤️❤️

    This was quite interesting, thanks for doing a video on it.
    The part about localizing names was specially funny to me since it reminded me of a specific case: in a recent Fire Emblem game there's a character named Manuela, however her name was changed to Miguela in the Spanish release. Why? Because in Spanish, Manuela is a slang commonly used for masturbation (Manuela sounds similar to Mano, the Spanish word for hand, so that's why).

    Jeez it was fun to watch! Was laughing quite hard on the Wikipedia and the weird search spiral part, as an English-Russian game localizer myself.
    Once was working on a game based in medieval Japan, and as a result one night I find myself reading the research article on the structure and parts of traditional Japanese armors😅 Cool knowledge, unfortunately quite useless in everyday life)
    So great this specialization is taught at least somewhere, hope Aurelie's students appreciate what they get)) While mostly, I think, all the currently working games localizers had to learn from practical experience - which is quite fun, but also you have to solve yourself all the same troubles: gender neutrality that doesn't work in certain languages, lack of context, localizing the names, and portfolios without credits and without some games titles due to NDAs. Ah well - but it's a fun job to have, really, nice to see ladies are enjoying it too. Wish everyone great projects and lovely clients!

    Thank you for this super interesting video ! I decided I wanted to specialise in this during my studies, but there are many aspects that are still quite obscure to me, especially about how it works in practice. This episode shed some light on a few of them so I'm very glad you all talked about this together :D

    2:18 - I'm coming up on my 28th year, you youngster. I did my research in libraries on my first few jobs because the internet barely existed.
    24:45 - This is a good point. I've translated 10 games over the years, but only one of them -- an RPG called Grandia Xtreme -- was as part of a team because of its size. The rest were all solo work. They were large, but still manageable for a single person. These days, open world games are just too big.

    Thank you so much for making this video, it was extremely interesting. I've been thinking of doing video games localization for many years now, but unfortunately, my translation course in university didn't cover this specialization at all, so I'm trying really hard to gather information about the field and build up my courage to start. This listening to these experts really helped me.

    • @Freelanceverse
      @Freelanceverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Patricia, I'm glad to hear that this video gave you new motivation. I don't think you need to cover a specialization at uni, I never did either. It's something you can attain naturally while working on the job.

      @@Freelanceverse And how do you get jobs from agencies when you don't have a background in the field?

    • @federicalusardi2710
      @federicalusardi2710 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@akahokwenarnoldflorent9690 You might have experience in other fields of translation and just be passionate about video games. Usually you will have to pass a test so having translation background IS important, but unfortunately the specializations in the video games field are still not super common, so it's rare to see translators born and bred for this specifically. I myself have a MA in Audiovisual Translation, so I mainly studied subtitling/dubbing, I only had a module on VG loc. Although not strictly necessary, if you want to work in this field and don't have an academic background, I would still recommend having an interest in video games. Knowing your terms around is useful, I often see tests where some terms are not translated in the "gaming" way and it's a pity. I would like to see more universities offering specific courses.

    Thank you for your content! I just graduated university with a degree in linguistics and translation and I'm really looking forward to specialize in this area or audiovisual translation. Having to start applying for jobs with little experience (coming from my class assignments only) is a little nerve wracking to be honest. I'm having a tough time deciding if I should just dive into localizing or have some prior experience in any translation job 😬 any feedback would mean so much!
    Anyway, thank you for your content once again :) finding a translating community on TH-cam was a big relief!
    You gained a new subscirber :D

    Do game companies hire remotely for translating games? I'm from Latin America and I'm thinking on getting a degree on Translation, I would love to test my chance on translating games, but my only way would be remote work, do I have any chance to get into translating games if I'm from Latin America?

    You need to not be a gamer and not care about games, because if you love games, you'll get your heart broken. Companies don't care, they do the bare minimum, blocks of text, no context, most of the time even out of context, no one to answer queries. Even the biggest publishers in the world do this.

    • @Freelanceverse
      @Freelanceverse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh that's sad to hear. I don't think that is always the case, but it can definitely be the result of cost cutting.

      In some cases, blocks of text that 99% of players won't read they are so long, pointless and tedious

      And sometimes these blocks of texts will never be read by 99% of players as they are long, pointless, and tedious.
