I've lived in Texas my whole life and have never seen any of the things you tried. The spices tell me they are probably Tex-Mex and their construction leans heavily that they are more novelty or gimmick souvenirs. If you want true historically accurate, traditional Texas candy, you have to go to Fredericksburg. There, you will find old European craft handed down from generations of not just candy making, but the largest selection of locally crafted wines of remarkable flavors you've never considered. But the most favorite candy, is actually called a pie and once you have a correctly made PECAN PIE, you'll never want anything else for the rest of your life; it truly is the most incredible confectionery ever devised. Like your shows a lot. Your raw honesty is what makes it an interesting curiosity.
Or watermelon. Or lemon. Or cucumber. Fuck it... any fresh fruit. And it's not just in Texas... Southern California does this too. We have chamoyadas that are frozen fruit slushies with chamoy and tamarind.
Chamoy is a condiment from Mexico that is typically served as a dip for fresh fruit. It is made with fruit, such as apricot, mango or plum, chilies and lime juice and is bottled and sold in varying degrees of spiciness.
Born and raised in texas. Most of these are not Texan, they are mex-tex snacks which is Mexican snacks sold in the Texan area. A lot of the snacks in the video here are loved by the Hispanic community here.
being from Texas, I can tell you that while yes there is a huge Mexican presence here in Texas, the candy you were trying is considered Mexican candy. Not Texas candy. I live in Southern Texas. By Corpus Christi and even south of Waco this is not considered Texas candy.

My favorites are Pico Pico, Tico Tico and saladitos. I usually eat my pineapple, watermelon, fresh coconut with lemon juice and chili powder. Spicy candy is very much a thing. Also speaking of potatoes, Ireland is associated with them but they’re not native to Europe.

1. I'm guessing the watermelon lollipop is meant to be like watermelon with Tajin on it?
2. Chamoy is a sweet and sour sauce made from pickled fruit. And yes, Grainne, it is great over fruit!
3. Lucas is a Mexican candy company. And the chili straws are likewise a pretty common Mexican treat.
Yes, you were correct in all of these. That lollipop is actually a Mexican Candy but you know...
I have never wanted one of those watermelon pops so bad as I do right now, I think im going to order them off amazon.... with some lucas
I feel this would have been more representative of Texas candy if they had just hit up a Buccee's instead.
Yes!!!
100% agreed
they don't have Buccee's in Ireland, so they can't exactly hit one up.. it's what was sent to them... go get some stuff from Buccee's and send it to them.
Went to Texas last month and stopped at 4 different Buccee’s in 24 hours. Can agree.

The lollipops are great if you can get past the outer coating of the chili powder. You could just run it under water and then you’ll have a slightly spicy watermelon sucker. The chili powder coating is on the outside but the sucker itself is like a regular lollipop with a bit of heat. I always take a drink of water before I put one of these in my mouth, so it doesn’t taste like powdery coating. I love them

If you want true historically accurate, traditional Texas candy, you have to go to Fredericksburg. There, you will find old European craft handed down from generations of not just candy making, but the largest selection of locally crafted wines of remarkable flavors you've never considered. I grew up in Southern California and it was the norm as children for us to eat candies with ingredients like chili powder and tamarind. It wasn’t just kids from only one culture who ate it.
As a native Texan, I've never even heard of most of these. If someone sent y'all a box of Mexican candy, they didn't do Mexico justice, because there are some absolutely delicious Mexican confections. The batch y'all had were like bad gas station candy you might come across in South Texas.
