- Phoenix Ancient City (凤凰古城), located in Fenghuang County (凤凰县), Hunan (湖南) Province, China, is a remarkable historical and cultural destination. This county, named after the mythological phoenix (Fenghuang), is situated on the western margin of Hunan Province and the southern part of Xiangxi, bordering Guizhou Province. As of 2015, Fenghuang County spans an area of 1,745 km² and has a population of approximately 428,294 residents.
The ancient town within Fenghuang County is exceptionally well-preserved, showcasing unique ethnic languages, customs, arts, and architectural remains from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town's design integrates the natural flow of the Tuojiang River, creating a picturesque mountain setting. Over half of the town's population belongs to the Miao or Tujia minorities, making it a vibrant center of ethnic culture.
Fenghuang Ancient Town has a significant historical background, including being the center of the Miao Rebellion of 1854-73. This event led to a Miao diaspora in Southeast Asia. The town is also home to the Southern China Great Wall (中国南方长城), a Ming dynasty fortification built to protect Han Chinese from Miao attacks.
In 2008, Fenghuang Ancient Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, highlighting its cultural significance. The town, built in 1704, has been recognized for its beauty and historical value, even being named the most beautiful town in China by New Zealand writer Rewi Alley.
Transportation to Fenghuang is facilitated by the nearby Fenghuang Airport in Tongren City, just 34 km away, and the Jishou Train Station, 50 km away. Additionally, the Fenghuang Maglev, opened in 2022, connects the town to the broader high-speed railway network, enhancing accessibility for tourists.
Fenghuang Ancient City is not only a testament to China's rich history and cultural diversity but also a living museum where visitors can experience the enduring legacy of the Miao and Tujia peoples.

If I had one suggestion, you could use a bit more info in your subtitles, and leave them up on the screen a bit longer to give us more time to read them, the beauty of these videos is you can enjoy them while occasionally looking away, but if the subtitles are only up for a short time you can easily miss them.
