I would also recommend a escape window. Knew a guy burned alive in a basement that only had one exit those little windows can't always be crawled though.

Our building codes require an egress window if the basement has a bedroom. Not sure about a tornado shelter. But the more openings, the greater risk from debris coming in a window. I think a bulkhead would be better.

My only concern without having seen any of the other videos you are talking about is the ceiling in your shelter. Is that just the floor from the first story? If so you need a reinforced concrete ceiling above you because that timber will come crashing down on you

I remember the story on the news of the family who was in their basement when the F-3 tornado hit.. their house was pulled-off the foundation & the family was literally sucked-out of their basement & up into the F-3 tornado! Needless to say, the basement provided them no safe place. Also, houses can get hit by the tornado & collapse down into the basement... thus killing the basement's occupants. The only real security when a tornado comes in an underground (concrete) storm-shelter. They can be purchased for a few thousand dollars & professionally installed.

Basements still scare me because the ceiling is just the floor of the house I prefer concrete cellars my grandpa built one outside of his house and we would always go over there when it said there was a threat of tornadoes and just go down there and sleep didn't have to worry about the roof coming off because it was all underground and the whole thing was made out of concrete and it had a sump pump incase water came in and a window that had bullet proof glass with wire inside but was big enough for someone to crawl threw also he kept tools down there in case he needed to pry the door open from stuff that had blown on top of the door they also kept can goods, and stuff my grandma had canned also and water but we would just take the weather radio down there and crawl into bed they had bunkbeds also but it was nice because it was kinda fun sleeping down there and didn't have to woke up because of the storm when I build a house I want a basement but I want it to be concrete from ceiling to floor and make it like it's another home have a little kitchen, living area, bedrooms, bathroom so that way if my house gets blown away I can just live down there while my new house is being built on top again but it was also nice because nobody was scared or running to the cellar during the storm we just avoided and slept down there if it was a night and during the day we would just go down and watch tv but you really couldn't here to much going on outside because he made the walls so thick .

I know this is from 2013, but i just now stumbled upon this video, and had a question for ya. I live in Indiana, and my home i bought has a basement. I do not have ANY kind of extra shelter down there. Like the shelter that you made, or a shelter that you can buy, etc. So, if there was a tornado warning, i do know to run downstairs to my basement, but WHERE do i go, that's the safest spot, in the basement?? So many different scenarios play out in my head, will we be sucked out, will my house collapse on top of us in the basement, and so on. I heard to go to the north corner of my basement, or the interior bathroom of my basement, or under the stairs, that lead to my basement!! I'm so confused!! Lol. You just seem like a very intelligent person to ask you for your opinion. I just want me and my family to be safe, in the event of a tornado. I want to know EXACTLY where to go, so that we all don't end up PANICKING!! Tornadoes really scare the living daylights out of me, it's a REAL fear of mine!! I hope to hear from ya, and thank you for your time.

Ya they always tell everyone to go too the south east corner of the basement so they know where to search first.id put a radio some water some food in the base ment and build a small cement shelter that's just big enough for your family to sit in and talk ventalate it and pour a solid concrete cap on top of it and
make the door narrow and dont sit in front of the door.your not gonna get sucked out of you basement unless a f5 sits right on top of your house.

The top bunks are too high off the ground. If the house goes the people in the top bunks will go with them. You need to put the top bunks on the floor.

Tornados only last for a couple hours. The roof needs to be able to NOT be able to be blown off! Electricity shouldn't be hooked up to the house! NEVER place a shelter next to a house! Have cellphones and emergency lanterns in there.

Man, it looks comfy, but at the end of the day your shelters roof is literally your upstairs floor. Wouldn't offer much protection in the Joplin tornado. having said that, I'd gladly take shelter there, as opposed to being upstairs or outside.

Just a thought: What if the tornado picks up your house and sucks you out with it? You have no protection over your head.
