Not as simple as that, depending where it is, you have got to get past the local council and local taxi drivers who lose business as a result. Landlord at my old country local had the same idea and was firmly rejected.
A village pub I used to frequent ran a minibus service for the customers, but it only lasted a short while, it turns out you can't just run a minibus you also need a special license and the cost was prohibitively expensive so they were forced to shut it down. That pub is now a crumbling wreck that hasn't been used for over a decade, sad times.
@@rogermellie8068 That's a shame. The number of elderly bachelor farmers in Ireland who have been killed on the roads trying to cycle home from the pub is shocking. I support the drink-driving laws obviously, but they've caused a lot of rural pubs to shut. There are no taxis, or they're prohibitavely expensive. I mean, you have minibuses bringing old folk to day centres, where's the harm in having a minibus bring everyone home after hours?
@mofolee you may be more successful doing it in rural Ireland than England without all the "papers" local and central government love sticking their nose in every aspect of our lives over here. Hopefully you have more freedoms over there.
That pub has got it all: The fire, the beer garden(s!) the pool table, the darts board, the piano, a music stage, a micro brewery! Very jealous this is their local.
They've done a great job for sure, I'm not sure there was much diversity in the clientelle that WT met in this video though, there was maybe only one or two women featured. I'm sure there are plenty of other demographics using the pub at different times of the week as mentioned though. Good luck to the place and the people.
There seems to be a widespread sense of dissatisfaction and gloom which characterizes the zeitgeist at the moment in the UK. Some commentators have noted that there appear to be so many problems the country needs to tackle, that it's difficult to prioritize what needs putting right first. This excellent vlog and it's passionate and caring host, emphasizes a starting point that we all should know already, but we often lose sight of: Mutual help and support within a local community. When you talk to people who lived through World War 2, they will often say that the collective sense of all of us pulling together was one of the positive aspects of life back then that we are now missing. Thank you David for doing your bit to remind us all that we are stronger when we act in unison, and that we can achieve amazing things if we put our minds to it. There is plenty of pressure from all quarters to divide and rule us, and keep us neutered, but by focusing on the traditional heart of our communities. we can claw back some control of our lives together.
Ah thanks for such a lovely comment. I totally agree about the zeitgeist of the UK at moment. And it can all feel so out of control that you feel helpless…then you see a little community like this just looking after each other, and it totally reminded me that that’s what is important

Most people have no idea how much hard work has obviously gone into this project. They had to beat property speculators, who would only build houses for sale to outsiders and not put anything into the local community. The best of luck to them. I hope it is financially viable for them.
You're bang on the money there John - I've been working on this for well over a decade - since long before the community pubs movement emerged following the introduction of the Localism Act in 2012 - which IFarm have used brilliantly to their advantage, the people there are amazingly focused, well motivated and incredibly hard working - What they have done needs to be organised into a national movement which, essentially has been my proposal for creating a People's Pub Partnership - and a movement for saving Britain's pubs, at SCALE ! a people's pub company. As someone who lives in a village over the last five years, I’ve really appreciated how integral the pub is to the community. It’s such a valuable asset
I also recall the 'yuppie' movement in the late 1980's when some 'knobs' thought it would be a good idea to 'modernise' all the old pubs, by ripping out the centuries old timbers for new and bright fixings. Then 10 years or so later, some other bright spark, came up with the idea of making these same pubs look 'old' again, so spent thousands looking for similar oak beams etc that probably got burn't years ago! Don't mess with what works!
I absolutely love the german guy whos part of the community. I mean all of them are great but the "ne" behind every other sentence sounds so german its really adorable. It is so funny too see how we keep our ways of speaking even when speaking foreign languages. I do the same when speaking English.

Wow, probably your best video that I have seen. It is always interesting how you bring light to the different areas of the UK, and now to throw a curve ball and show us the love of a community was amazing. They invited a good man down to their pub, because they know you are honest and not disparaging about the UK, a proud citizen that helps others shine as well.
This was so heart warming to watch. What a beautiful community. Myself and my partner already wanting to go visit. This video highlights the importance of caring, even when life gets hard, to keep caring about your community and to not let apathy set in. It's only through caring and not giving up that huge achievements and differences like this are possible. Complaining about the state of the country/towns will only get us so far, but caring, banding together and jumping into action will propel us. Brilliant work Turnip. Always love watching your videos. Your energy, enthusiasm, it has and will take you far. Can't wait to see more of your adventures. Much love, from the Red Rose to the White Rose
Love your videos you did one on Bolton which was showing how run down the town has become. Oh dear that's what happens but I love your vitality and enthusiasm it's wonderful. Also your comments at the end reciting poetry is always very touching. Thank you for all the videos I love to watch you wandering around. 😊😊
I think this is your best video, mate. Like a lot of people here are saying, there’s a lot to be bummed out about in the UK - like everywhere - and plenty of content out there focusing on that (which naturally gets more views and is almost self-fulfilling). This kind of content’s a real antidote to that and is a pleasure to watch. Also I bloody love Norfolk & Suffolk, the people are just the best there.
Hey cheers for this. I appreciate the message. It does seem to be the case that the bleaker content racks up the views, and whilst I do enjoy making my high street vids which often falls into that category, I never want to be someone only pushing that narrative. So hearing that you, and it seems others, have really liked this video is buzzing 😃
My eyes are tearing up. this is so cool, more community, more friendliness, more local culture, people buying things together so it doesnt just vanish into the black hole of financial greed
I'm very proud to be from Suffolk, and this enterprise warms my heart so much because it represents everything I believe to be dear to treating people in our community with love and respect. Money should always be secondary to home! Thank you for this great video, as I didn't know about the pub, but now I will visit.
Fabulous video. I live in Australia, found this via a friend on Twitter. I wish all involved the very best. Good luck with the brewery. I now follow you, Wandering Turnip. ❤
Amazing. What a beautiful thing to see. My aunty used to run a pub when I was younger and every weekend my whole family would go there and me and all my cousins would play football in the back or play on the climbing frames outside while our parents all sat together and had a drink. You'll get a lot of people these days saying kids shouldn't be in pubs, but that's probably because pubs now aren't like they were back then. It wasn't about people getting blind drunk, it was about family and friends connecting and relaxing after a hard week of work. I don't even drink but I look back at that time fondly. I wish there was a local I could go to with my mates, even for just a coke and some food where we had this sense of community. Great stuff.
That piano playing was beautiful. It's not just the elderly that are lonely my dude, I'm 48 and spend every moment alone, frankly I'm on the edge of losing my mind. I'm an ex alcoholic so pub is a no go for me, used to play in a band when I was younger and still partied, God I miss that with all my broken heart. Keep up the great work lad.
They do need to be supported, but alot of people who are younger (including people in their 30s - not all) don’t want to go to pubs because of the people who go to some of them. I’d rather a bar which is big enough that I don’t have to engage with people I don’t want to but can have a good time with friends. My grandparents always used to go to their village pub (they tend to be nicer and more welcoming via towns and cities)
Although not my local I have been part of the community work that the folks who run it have been spearheading. This is about rebuilding resilient communities and resilience in the land and while this looks like and is an idyllic setting there is no reason why this can't be replicated in more urban areas. Happily, this is one of 3 community pubs I know of in our area.
Brilliant! Such a lovely community spirit where old and young alike mix together.well done David! Just goes to show not everywhere is like oil and water! love the fact that there are lots of different accents that gel together to work as a caring community.congrats to the white horse! 👍
Just a community, hanging on to who they are. I know that doesn't sound spectacular, but that's the essence of culture. Don't lose it. That is one of your best videos so far, real people real lives 👍

Wow, I'm mind blown how the sense of community still exist. Thanks for vlogging about this, I'd be curious to see any other initiatives on your channel!
What a great outcome for their community. Really heartwarming to watch. A silver lining in amongst the desolation and corporatism in our towns and cities.
If they had decent real ale with some good stouts and porters, this would be my ideal pub. great story and video. we need these shining examples of how to save communities.
Three old pubs near me being sold for development. Younger people don’t think of getting in the pub as a rite of passage any more and at £6 a pint, older people can’t afford to drink in pubs like they used to, so they’re closing.
I would comment on how awesome this is from the community to pull together to get the pub going again, but everyone else has said that in much better words than I could. Instead, I want to say I really hope you realise what a great job you're doing with this channel. You have a true skill for documentary filmmaking - both knowing how to present places, and knowing how to engage with the people you meet and ask the right questions! The clear genuine interest you have for the art you're creating really comes across in the videos 😄.
❤ One of the best and most positive reflections of our beautiful England so far; as a youth worker in the local community this is so positive to see! Thank you 🙏 😊
This is bloody brilliant. Its such a shame that the great British pub is on the decline. There seems to be a pub shutting it doors for the last time every other day in Donny. It’s fantastic to see a community coming together to keep their local open. This is my favourite video of your channel now. Id love it if you got a chance to make more like this.
Co-ops are the way of the future, seriously based way of saving places like these, also housing too, setting up housing co-ops are proving very successful notably for student accommodation.
Watched this the other day - loved it … now just watched it again with my friend - I had to show her .. we’re both sitting here feeling like we’ve been to the pub - talking about how awesome it is ..the people in it and the pub community they saved / created are .. it’s so inspiring - the country needs to see your video - it would help people come back together in strength .. beautiful
Pubs need to do everything 'in house' these days to keep their pubs affordable to customers including making the beer, a simple take it or leave it hotpot/stew type menu that can be prepared by a non chef. Too many are putting managers and chefs in place and paying out salaries that mean they are never in profit, forget fleeting modern fads and trends they are a path to failure, take a look at how pubs were run way back in the days when landlord and lady did it all themselves. No one needs a fancy 'dining experience' from a pub, they just want some good affordable grub and ale in good company. Keep it simple !!
You're onto a good idea there, beans on toast could be a good offering on the menu. 2 slices of bread for about 10p, half a can of beans for about 40p, the electric used to toast the bread and heat the beans 10p. Sell it for £1.50 and you're making 90p profit, could upsell some cheese for an extra 50p. Far cheaper to make and sell than a fancy burger.
@@joeynebulous816 yup, the media influencing folks with fancy gourmet ideas is not helping pubs at all, its all just too expensive to maintain on all fronts.pubs used to be ran on a much simpler basis.
@@philyaboots1 my theory is part of it is to do with the smoking ban, a substantial bit of revenue must have been lost in rainy weather cause who wants to stand outside with a fag drinking while it's pissing it down. Pubs had to transition to serving food to make up the shortfall and encourage families to stay.
The UK seems entirely broken at the moment so to hear a positive story like this is just brilliant.

Your a great guy m8 and for you to open up is brilliant I'm 61 and feel that life is so bad thanks m8 carry on with your inspirational talent 🙏😊
I'm glad people like you exist.
Looks like a wonderful place. Which I had such a community around me, maybe it wouldn't be so bloody lonely and alienating then.
Grandma from Canada here. This video makes me want to move to that village and be in community with them all😊
Makes me want to be right there in the heart of that wonderful community.. sitting by that fire having a chat with those awe-inspiring folk!
So glad Thomas contacted you and that you shared this with us, David.. I think this upload will be a huge success and an inspiration for many!
Everyone needs a few smiles right now.. 🤗
Love this so much. Glad you went back for the second night. What they've done feels a bit similar to the excellent work Community Land Trusts do to make affordable housing in unaffordable cities. I hope they have long-term success!
Just brilliant what has been achieved 👍🏻🍺🍷🥃
Brilliant. They need to be a motorhome stopover. They will get plenty of people calling in
That band was pretty good, an what a lovely community story.
Love your videos you did one on Bolton which was showing how run down the town has become. Oh dear that's what happens but I love your vitality and enthusiasm it's wonderful. Also your comments at the end reciting poetry is always very touching. Thank you for all the videos I love to watch you wandering around. 😊😊
This video was wicked to see. Well done David 👍👍 Great seeing u with you're big smile with the joy of the activity of this pub 🍻🙂🍻🙂😊
Thank you for sharing the beautiful story of the White Horse.💜
Even going 100 homes down our way, you'd be lucky to scrape a tenner together, so huge congrats to these folks.✌✌😒
Your content just gets better and better and better!!! Thank you so much for your uplifting work
Thank you
Well done the White Horse.
The hope and joy this video brings to my heart is pure MAGIC! Good luck to that special community and thankyou to WT
Hats off to these guys and it’s great you’ve documented this into a vid. This makes me realise how lucky I am to have a local which is a free house.
You make such good videos mate, more interesting and real than what mainstream media make, well done. 👍👍
I couldn't agree more.. 👍👌
Thank you and to this community for showing some uplifting moments in British live.
That is one of your best videos so far, real people real lives 👍
what a brilliant video, ive seen a few videos where the locals buy the local,it really brings the community together and it really is the heart of the village, well done to all
Brilliant video executed by you again. What a lot of love and emotion shown by everyone involved. I wish everyone well in their endeavour to keep a community together 🥰
My neighbour did this. (Not up North, I currently live in Berkshire) But yeh I think him & 6 of his friends all got together to buy the local lol. It's still going strong. Always open....
Have to say, this place looks absolutely incredible. Well done them! I might have to move there lol
I know the George and Dragon pub in Hudswell village near Richmond Yorks is now a community owned pub and has been for a while and they mainly supply local micro brewery ales, hope this venture turns out successful 🍺👍
This video was amazing.like community spirit used to be.it was a pleasure to watch.thanks for showing this inspiration.hope many more community follow there lead.xx
This is so heartwarming, I love it! We need more third spaces like this - and as a drummer this is exactly the kind of place I'd want to play in !O!
The quality of this video is up there with, even exceeding anything on the mainstream media.
Ah cheers for this. I got myself some new mics and trying to up my game with each new vid. So glad it’s being noticed 👍
Fantastic! We need more people in villages to do this. 😊
This is great. Same thing is going on in the US with the loss of former community institutions. It’s nice to see a positive story👍
Wonderful heart warming story. Reminds me of my childhood village growing up in the 70s. communities are dying rapidly.
Briliant and uplifting video full of great people and funny characters. Such an encouragement. Thanks for the video.
What a fantastic story! Such a great win for the community.
The many smiles on *everyone’s* face tells the story of community and local pride. This video is fantastic!
God bless all the wonderful people who still have the passion, drive and ability to ignore expectation.
This is truly wholesome Turnip. What a fab collection of people from a solid community. Fab stuff mate 👍
I have never ever smiled through a nearly half an hour youtube video before. What a gem! Thank you so much for making these! Also, the first video that genouinely made me miss the country and it made me realise that the only thing I miss is the little wonders of true community I got to witness being there.
Love this! Wonderful episode Mr Turnip.
Ah thank you so much for that. What a nice comment to come across 😃😃
It is good to see the cross generational support and involvement
❤ One of the best and most positive reflections of our beautiful England so far; as a youth worker in the local community this is so positive to see! Thank you 🙏 😊
That's the way to do it, so beautiful to see. Great work Mr Wondering Turnip . Love all your work. Top man ❤
Really Heart warming video.
Big shout out to these brilliant people, keeping a worthy community together. This needs to be replicated all over the country. Power to them .
You are not wrong.
yeah its the only way locals can compete with corporate/ultrarich ppl buying everything
What a lovely story and great community ❤️👍
Those old pub pictures at the start are amazing👍
Watched this the other day - loved it … now just watched it again with my friend - I had to show her .. we’re both sitting here feeling like we’ve been to the pub - talking about how awesome it is ..the people in it and the pub community they saved / created are .. it’s so inspiring - the country needs to see your video - it would help people come back together in strength .. beautiful
im telling you now, the best video that you have ever done mate. im from Hull and we have a community all around us, what a pleasure to watch
