Hi Steve, I'm Marco from the Azores. I love your videos and I've been following you on TH-cam for a while now. I'm originally from the island of Santa Maria but have been living in São Miguel for 20 years. I live in the village of Capelas, just 15 minutes from the city of Ponta Delgada. I was very surprised and happy to hear that you came to the Azores. If you're here on Christmas Day, I'd be happy to invite you to come and have lunch at my house with my family so that you don't have to spend Christmas Day alone. Have a great holiday in the Azores! Marco Raposo
Wow - a perfect example of how friendly the people are here! Thanks so much for the offer Marco, unfortunately I had a very short stay but I’d love to come back sometime and see the place properly! Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you and your family :)
@@steve-marsh Steve if you do manage to get back to the Azores, there are also charter flights to Bermuda in the summer from there and then onward to East Coast or Canada if you wanted to do a mega trip. Bermuda is a bit expensive to stay although there are good AirBNBs
Coffee brewed at 9:55am.... no video at 10:01am... panic sets in.... ah here it is... the weekend will be alright .... keep rolling Steve and thank you! :)
There are only around 11,000 inhabited islands in the world. If you run out of those, there are more than half a million uninhabited ones. After that, you'll have to explore the planets and their moons! I am looking forward to you videoing them all. Merry Christmas to you and Alicja.
A little something towards your adventures, It’s not much but I like to show some token appreciation to a few of the TH-camrs who have entertained me throughout the year. Cheers.
Eastern Airlines used to have the motto: "We earn our wings every day" I would say you have earned your wings on many airlines and I'm so happy you have! What a treasure your channel is and thank you for visiting the Azores can't wait till the next video!
Boarding not boarding with Ryanair seems to be their cunning plan to keep costs down. It's as if they must get the punters away from the boarding gate asap, even if it does mean standing in a stairwell or outside in the cold. Perhaps there's an airport fee if the departure gate doesn't get cleared by a certain time. Your Grimaldi moment made me laugh!
It's to help with turnaround times. If everyone is scanned through the boarding gate and ready, as soon as the plane is ready then people can start boarding.
Good pont. I'm convinced someone will soon collapse in one of these queues or busy buses. It's a horrible way to travel but price keeps us coming back eh!
you really know how to keep us hanging. "cant show you this! thats for tomorrow" for all off us thats Tuesday or next Saturday video. oh well. Good things come to those who wait. Looking forward to see around the Azores. Thank you again Steve.
As soon as I saw the video title I thought of the Azores. I went to Sao Miguel 7 years ago for a 10 day trip around the island and it was absolutely beautiful. Watched one the most beautiful night skies I've ever seen in my life, as well as enjoying the volcanic hot springs. Definitely one of the most memorable trips in my life! And indeed very affordable for such a remote place.
My wife and I spent 3 weeks in the Azores visiting most of the islands about 15 years ago. Some amazing sites, sounds and cultural experiences.... a most rewarding holiday.
Now that you mention it: Look at a place called 100 Montaditos at Spanish airports. Its basically a Spanish fast food chain. And its surprizingly affordable, even in airports. Dont know if all airports have one but ive been to one at Madrid airport last year. They mainly serve mini-bocadillos so you might want to order 3 or 4 to have a complete meal. You just have these paper menu's you have to check boxes on to let them know which ones you want and hand it to the cashier. Its not the most gourmet Spanish food youll have, but I always like it. Fast, decent quality, local and not expensive so yeah, what more can you ask for?
We had once a chatty pilot on our 4 hrs flight to Egypt. He kept telling stories about all the countries we flew over... Greece was great! He even suggestet not go visit Athens right now, because there are many building works and we may not get to see all the historic sites. I loved that flight, 4 hours literaly flew by! Thank you Austrian!
Hi Steve, looks like the landing was special with that scenery, The plane that you walked by I believe you will find is a Q400 turbo prop dash 8 (Q standing for quiet). They're made in Canada (or at least one place they are made), in Toronto, Ontario. But I think that has changed recently. Looking forward to your next video. Happy Christmas to you and Celia (sorry I know I just spelled her name wrong).
First went to PDL in 2015. Amazing place.. so unspoilt and affordable...flew on Ryanair Portugal..air quality beautiful plus an amazing vegy restaurantcalled Rootas... incrediblescenery walks and thermal pools..bus services excellent.
Nice aerial views of the Ebro river delta, which is a nice destination in itself. The flooded fields you have seen are actually rice fields, so it is normal that they are flooded in this time of the year. You would have seen a massive green surface in spring. Great place for a quiet stay!
"Duty free isn't even open yet" What a shame! You love those places so much haha I love those travel day videos. What I really like about your videos is that you show us travelling as it is, not after editing the "bad" parts out, or deciding to not mention them. Keeping it real for everyone to see!
The Azores are still on my bucket list. 20 years ago I came very close to go hopping all 9 islands with a friend. Didn't happen because we couldn't get a flight to one of the islands. Instead we went to mainland Portugal and saw some awesome stuff there (old rock paintings in a cave and outside in a gorge that took some doing to get there). Since then my health deteriorated and income ditto but maybe one day huh? Meanwhile, I live vicariously through your videos, thank you for making them. Merry christmas and best wishes for the new year to you and Alicja.
Dear Steve (please allow me to treat you like an old friend), I've traveled with you and thanks to you for a long time and I always get great happiness from the airplane's cabin sights and sounds. They bring me very fond memories of my mom and dad. I appreciate very very much that you leave those 'as is' and the great quality of your sounds recording. Closing my eyes, with the earphones on, I feel there. Then, when I heard the background music you added to the taxi ride (which I didn't mind at all) I appreciated even more and noticed your purpose during the flight. Thank you very much. From a friend.
The Azores has the only tea plantation in Europe. Worth a visit. Also taking a bus across to Ribeira Grande from the bus stop near the main square is excellent. Goes right across the island. We go to the Azores once a year.
Years ago I sailed by yacht to another of the Azore islands - Faial. While hiking in the island I was struck by the preponderance of hydrangeas in the hedgerows. I look forward to Steve's encounter with the hydrangea which I now understand to be the national plant of the Azores
Hotel looks fabulous with breakfast included ...great find Steve ...Looking forward to seeing next weeks video ..Wishing you & Alicja a Merry Christmas & Best wishes for 2025🥰⛄️🎄❄️☃️🎄
Been to The Azores by accident. Took Azores Airlines back in 2017, Toronto to Gran Canaria, what was supposed to be a 2hr layover turned into almost 3 days in Ponta Delgada. The Azores Airlines flight from Toronto was 5 hours late departing so we missed our connection to Gran Canaria, which only flew a couple of times a week. Azores Airlines put us up in a hotel for 2 nights and we had a ton of time to explore. Missed 3 days of our holiday in Gran Canaria but enjoyed Ponta Delgada. BTW, we took one of SATA's small props you pointed out ( a Q400 ) all the way from Ponta Delgada to Gran Canaria, a 3 hours journey over nothing but ocean in a small prop. Azores Airlines looks much improved since that crazy journey, oh and BTW, I always check the flap settings too! LOL Enjoy!
Me and my family lived in Ponta Delgada in the 1960’s. My father worked for Portuguese airlines. I’ve been back twice and it is one of the most mysterious, magical and extremely interesting place due to being an active volcanic island. Lots of hot springs and tropical flora and fauna. The weather can be very overcast and foggy one minute then become very warm and sunny. The climate itself is very unique.
I'm very happy to hear these travel tidbits as I've only flown thru the Azores in US military aircraft to refuel for someplace else. The furthest from a plane we were allowed was to let smokers stretch their legs [I'm not one], away from the refueling operations but the opportunity to step away from a very spartan military aircraft was great. Steve's videos add substance to what was just another tarmac, airport fence, security and noisy takeoff. Merry Christmas Mstrdiver - US Army -- 1973 to 1995
As someone who walks from Ingliston Park and Ride no matter how big my luggage, seeing you pay that airport fare with your little bag always gives me a shudder :-) Looking forward to the next one, as always. Keep 'em coming!
I cant wait to see your next video from the Azores. I've always wondered what it was like as when I was a child my mother had to stop there on her way from Canada to Italy, in the 50s. I always imagined it to be a desolate place but it certainly doesn't seem to be.
Oh my! That approach to the Azores was spectacular! I’m surprised Filson didn’t make the trip. That hotel was a screaming deal, in my mind. Looking forward to the next! Cheers, and ATB!
The Azores are a wonderful part of the world. Was there in 2022, went purely for football, Santa Clara play in the top division of Portugal. Got to check out Ponta Delgada as well as Furnas, which is a thermal hotpsot in the west of Sao Miguel. Must get back again and check out the smaller islands. One of the islands has Portugal's highest elevation !
Thank you for showing this, as some of my ancestors came fto the Azores. I can see the land and what it is like. I know alot has changed but love seeing this. Be safe
Hi Steve, Just love it when you visit somewhere new and you have a big smile on your face. Saturday morning fix started. Thank you again Steve for taking us along with you. One of the best youtube channels. 😃
As always Steve at his most happiest when he’s fed and then! sees breakfast is included in his hotel stay! So looking forward to your video next week exploring the island
Steve, the Azores look absolutely stunning. I will never get there so enjoying this visit through your eyes, many thanks mate. Looking forward to tomorrow's video. Regards Michael from Tasmania
Been to the Azores and stayed at the same hotel but my room was on the other side of the building, breakfast room and pool visible from the windows! If I remember correctly, it was an old college/school building. It was a great trip. It was winter time but it didn’t rain during my trip although it had been raining for days before I arrived. Really stunning, unique place.
Looks very appealing viewing from snowy northern Michigan at a balmy -9C! Looking forward to seeing the next video. I know virtually nothing about the Azores! Seems very exotic!
I love your travel day videos, it is the main reason for me to watch. From the west coast of the US there is such limitation for diverse and relatively easy destinations. Thanks for the lid tutorial. Since when have airlines brought back magazines!!! Have not seen those since before times. Those bargain airfares are exactly what I mean about the potential for a wide variety of adventures. The hotel room looks great and such a great price.
What a great journey Steve, and Sata surprised me so much with their great service and beautiful English…! Always great to get a detailed routing from the flight deck and you can tell a crew who really enjoy their job! Top marks all round!
A Merry Christmas and looking forward to more if you great videos is the new year. Thanks for keeping me sane this year with your fine wit and your lovely girlfriend Alesha. Sorry for the spelling , not my best skill. Cheers. Tony Searles Chch NZ
I just stumbled onto this channel a couple of days ago and cannot believe what a rock star this guy is! Questions: 1. How many people can travel around the world with only a backpack? 2. How many folks would like to travel with this stud? 3. Any YT’s that are this relatable and affordable? Glad he has so many subscribers and I look forward to his next video! Thank you Steve!
Well done Steve, you're a man after my own heart. Love your attitude which seems to consist of taking a flight somewhere and then explore on your own two feet. Could go on about this subject but, anyway Steve, just keep on trucking.
Thanks Steve for this video and all your travels during 2024! I broke my leg last January, and have been burning holes in TH-cam while recovering! Love your channel and your enthusiasm! Hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
1.Another fascinating video. There is another way to get there with some careful planning, changing at Porto, but it does not connect from Edinburgh, but it does from Stansted with Ryanair. That is one of the disadvantages of travel videos, First I have to find the destination on Google Earth and then check various ways to get there. A good thing I am retired! 2.Now Steve, what would also be helpful is if you made clear on what DATES you traveled. I was very confused after seeing you on Svalbard And then in Rome to take Grimaldi ferry to Barcelona. The videos don't have to be in exact order but dates would help. 3. Seeing you getting that early flight from Edinburgh reminded me of why I don't travel much nowadays. I don't sleep well so the idea of an early start is horrific. Happy Christmas.
Oh wow . I could sense your excitement on the way .. just as I felt that excited when I went in 2013 . Seeing the island again as you flew in is making me want to go again . Just loved it there .. can’t wait to see where you go
Steve, I love how so many of your videos begin in the pitch dark in early morning in Edinburgh. Anywhere else is going to look better after that! That said, the Azores look like a terrific destination in the winter, I might just jump on a plane and follow you....
Nice one Steve. "Now where could he be off to now?”, I ask myself. I'd never have guessed The Azores! Wow! it looks like a very nice place. Can't wait to see your report!
A very good trip to the Azores, well done only you can make two flights really watchable. I am looking forward to the follow up video. Merry Christmas to you and Alicia
Hi Steve, so pleased to see you have gone to the Azores. I visited the islands a few years ago on an escorted tour. In PDG we stayed at a hotel opposite the harbour and one of Fred Olsen’s liners (Boudicca) was moored only a short distance away. The streets look so different with the dark and light patterns. The small plane you saw at the airport takes people between islands - almost like a bus. No reserved seats, short time at the airport prior to boarding, much like being in the waiting room of a bus or train station. We visited 4 or 5 of the islands by plane. Faial (Horta) is a stopping off island for yachts doing the transatlantic voyages, and for good luck the ‘sailors’ paint symbols on the harbour wall so you can see dates and where they have come from and going. There are about 9 islands and a couple of them are on a different continental plate from the others so they are gradually (very gradually!) moving away from the others. The fields look a bit like the Peak District in UK area as there are stone walls around them, and in summer they are covered with multi coloured hydrangeas. Look forward to seeing more videos. I suspect you will feel that you did not spend enough time on the Azores, as so much to see.
The Azores is an amazing place to visit, apart from all the volcanic activity and the different mineral waters,Hydrangea hedgerows it has Europes only Tea plantation,i visited back in 2010 would love to go again, oh and the cheese..thanks Steve for the memories
I went to the Azores on a P&O cruise. We were only there for the day, but we took a local taxi, and saw the mountains, volcanos, and reservoirs. The taxi driver was telling us about their economy, and how they don't get enough funding from Portugal. Hence the cheaper hotel prices.
Hi Steve, Nice to see the Azores and Ponta Delgada. I saw a bit of this in 1979 when on board HMS Mohawk heading for the Caribbean. Not that we saw much of it - we only stopped to refuel! Keep up the good work.
I lived in the Azores. I absolutely loved it there. I was a military dependent. All the people I met there(other military brats) are still my friends. I love the Axores!!!! So glad you went there.
very promising so far! what a quaint hotel on an equally quaint street--well chosen, Steve! looking forward to the next video for further adventure! cheers!
Been mentioning the Azores in the chat for ages. I love the place. Ryanair do flights from Stansted from spring and cheap as chips. I loved it so much I want to move there.
I've heard of the Azores, but know nothing about them. Thank you for virtually broadening my horizons. Whilst affordable for you, the advantage of living in Europe I suppose, it's sadly quite a bit exxy for me here in Australia :) The Sata aircraft, at 16:44, looks like a Dash 8 to me.
Steve says: "A wrapped sandwich." Zweispurmopped understands: "A rat sandwich". That Grim Mouldy line shaped my expectations a bit, huh? 🥴 That mystery turboprop-plane is a DeHavilland Dash 8, by the way! 🤗 …and my bucket list got longer again, ta 🤨😵💫… 🤭🤗 Have a jolly good Christmas, you two! And all you who read this as we, of course!
A lifelong friend passed away recently at the age of 92. His ancestors were American consuls in the Azores. Have always meant to visit. Maybe this coming year when I will be as close as Lisbon. Too late to tell him about it, but I can carry him along in my heart. Thanks for showing me how it can be done.
...oh, when I heard its the Azores, I just relaxed... I love islands far away from the buzz... Ponta Delgada looks sweet, pretty, simple charm... an excellent bucket list choice!! 😎
Fantastic! So weird seeing my home in a Travel Vlog! Well, I actually live on the island of Flores but we always have to pass through Ponta Delgada when going anywhere and we always stay at the Hotel do Colegio as well. As you say, so cheap (in winter) and so nice too and the superior rooms are only 15€ more. Great stuff, look forward to next ep.
I arrived by cruise ship in Ponta Delgata on the 8th! It is a magical place. The Avianca plane was still there! I am excited to see this series and to show my family! My pics don't do it justice.
Great video as always...i so enjoy travelling with you from the comfort of my armchair...thanks as always from Ireland...i think an Irishman was manager of the Azores football team a few years ago..

A very nice green Island. A rock in middle of the Atlantic ocean.
One of nine that make the Açores archipelago, all green islands.
It's crazy that all such islands are the tops of some mountains starting deep at the ocean bottom.

The Azores! Merry Christmas to all of us. The Azores have been on my list and here you are gifting it to me! Thank you!
Looking forward to seeing more about this island 😁 A happy Christmas to yourself and Alicja !!
Saturday morning coffee with Steve Gotta love that ❤😀
I love that the taxi has posted fixed prices. No “surge pricing” like the ride share apps.
Lovely stuff. Not my words.. The words of shaking Stevens.
19C in December, you have hit paradise Steve. I'm doing this next year
Another place I never knew I wanted to go!
So far, the ferry from denmark to shetland and iceland; and svalbard...
Oh my goodness! A taxi, a deal on a very nice room and breakfast in the morning! I wonder what "tomorrow's" adventure might bring!?! Can't wait 😊
What a great journey Steve, and Sata surprised me so much with their great service and beautiful English…! Always great to get a detailed routing from the flight deck and you can tell a crew who really enjoy their job! Top marks all round!
always start my saturdays with coffee and steve merry christmas to all!!
Thanks!
That gets him half way to Barcelona!
Cheers Phoebe! Really appreciate it :)
I enjoy seeing the travel part. When we vacation, which is once a year I take full advantage of the time making the travel part interesting as I can.
Wow what a beautiful place, lovely looking buildings
Oh Steve This is fabulous Must go
Well done Steve, you're a man after my own heart.
Just loved it there .. can’t wait to see where you go
I absolutely would have paid extra for that little balcony. How lovely!
Thank you! I have never been to the Azores and looks like a place I would love to go! Cheers!
A very good trip to the Azores, well done only you can make two flights really watchable. I am looking forward to the follow up video. Merry Christmas to you and Alicia
Glad to see that you are out and about. After your last trip, I thought you'd gone away on retreat, to recover!
Haha yes 🤣
There are tea plantations in the south of the Netherlands and in Cornwall UK nowadays.
My mom used to always says “if you see something you need buy it, and don’t wait to come back it may be gone or the store closed.”
Good man Steve- had the Azores on my mind for 2025 & now am sold. Always love a remote island! Slainte
I went to the Azores on a P&O cruise. We were only there for the day, but we took a local taxi, and saw the mountains, volcanos, and reservoirs. The taxi driver was telling us about their economy, and how they don't get enough funding from Portugal. Hence the cheaper hotel prices.
It's beautiful there, can't wait to see the whole town and area! Something to look forward to next week
Always a delight when a new video drops. Presumably the folks at the airport just say “Where to today, Steve?” by now :)
Going to watch next video. We had an amazing time in the Azores. The people are wonderful. The views spectacular.
very promising so far! what a quaint hotel on an equally quaint street--well chosen, Steve! looking forward to the next video for further adventure! cheers!
We did a transatlantic cruise and stopped at the Azores - beautiful place and wonderful people. Looking forward to next week!
Can’t wait for the next I travel through your videos
Excellent! Love the return of Steve's notes, I'd forgotten about them!
Steve says: "A wrapped sandwich." Zweispurmopped understands: "A rat sandwich". That Grim Mouldy line shaped my expectations a bit, huh? 🥴
That mystery turboprop-plane is a DeHavilland Dash 8, by the way! 🤗
…and my bucket list got longer again, ta 🤨😵💫… 🤭🤗
Have a jolly good Christmas, you two! And all you who read this as we, of course!
Oh, you heard that too 😅
I was confused at first that the sandwich was ratty but nice 👍
Wow!! A bargain hotel or what! Really looking forward to the next video, The Azores looks really lovely ❤❤❤
It's so clean and tidy there! Well cared-for and tidy. You don't often see that anymore. Thank you.
Great little video and the place looks great, can't wait to see the next one, Hope you and Alicja have a lovely Christmas
It's getting winter at your side. Therefore, a bigger thank you for making a videos. Brave man!
Have a brilliant Xmas you & alicja & your family Steve ❤😊
I arrived by cruise ship in Ponta Delgata on the 8th! It is a magical place. The Avianca plane was still there! I am excited to see this series and to show my family! My pics don't do it justice.
Excellent video, Steve 😊. I'm looking forward to part 2 👍👍
Great video as always...i so enjoy travelling with you from the comfort of my armchair...thanks as always from Ireland...i think an Irishman was manager of the Azores football team a few years ago..
