There is an Etsy shop called Lady Detalle that sells nearly identical ones. Most of that shop is actually reasonably priced, too! Unfortunately still beyond my means, but someday...
I really wonder what the staff of his lordship’s quarantine shelter think of a Guinea pig named Cesario and his owner who comes in to visit wearing Victorian clothing, sewing lace together and speaking in cursive.
That's our Bernadette! I NEVER need to apologize for the way I dress, although, there are times when I have to explain when people are puzzled by my attire...
At first I didn't think I would be interested in this video, but then I realized I use similar techniques when I crochet. I just finished attaching my crocheted trim to the edge of a modern fleece baby blanket. I hand basted and stitched it in place, going around the whole thing five times to secure it in place. I'm working on another one now. They are for our twin grandsons, who are one week old as of April 16th.
For the tables at our wedding, we thrifted an absurd amount of cotton crochet doilies. I have been wondering how to reuse them, and you've just made me realise they could also be used as an insert in a garment! Welp, I'm off to add old doilies to ALL the things!
Amazing! :D My husband and I are Edwardian re-enactors over at Hever Castle in Kent and I’ll be making a new dress for this years event in August (if it goes ahead!). I’m planning on basing it on the photo of my great granny in her lace insertion dress so I’ve been loving these videos so far!
I know that you're probably working on approximately 132435 projects right now but this video reminded me how much I love your sewing videos! Beautiful cinematography, informative and inspiring -can't wait for the final video about this dress 🤩
Drunk stitching? I'm a master, I can do that sober. Enjoyed this, then we got to the end with his Lordship and that just made my day. All week has been miserable and rainy, but seeing his cuteness made me smile lots. Thanks.
I may have searched down your insertion lace Etsy vendor, purchased mass quantities as well, and now put it into piles and try to swim through it "ala Scrouge McDuck" which is where my money went soooo it's almost the same as swimming through my money since that's where my money went. "Drunk stitching is historically accurate" I shall no long feel inadequate when the late night, sleepy stitches go awry, wandering thus away from where they ought to be. Thank you, dear Bernadette, thank you.
In the millionth hour of crocheting lace for a chemise yoke, this is just the perfect motivation - so thanks for keeping my faith alive that the tiny crumpled pieces will really be part of an actual garment someday!
I admire your skills. I've tried crochet so many times and ended with a bunch of tangled thread and a ruined afternoon hahaha I can't wrap my head around it so the fact that you're crocheting your own lace is amazing!
@@annbrookens945 Thank you, but, to be totally honest, it's more the other way around - being a long time lover of knitting and crochet, I'm actually doing the sewing project to justify crocheting the lace :)

I've seen thrift flip and upsizing videos in which the creators added other fabrics in to size up the clothes, but I've never thought about lace for that purpose. Very practical and fancy!

Aww! That reunion with his Lordship 💕 I think we all felt your joy. And am I the only one going through all my old clothes to find something to attach insertion lace to? Lace ALL THE THINGS!
Really really not! I'm also having the feeling of "yes! This is something I can do!" That and too much lockdown cake, so some things do need a bit of extra room.
I ave a nice pink linen blouse that I rather optimistically bought at a thrift shop and found it to be a little too tight. I also have some cream cotton lace. I believe I've found my next small project.

Exactly what I was doing too. I got my new e-spinner a couple of weeks ago and it's so quiet (and it's got a foot switch) I can at last, safely spin and watch at the same time. Until now, I've only been able to ply and watch at the same time.
@@somebodyelse138 That's awesome well done ! :D What kind of e spinner did you get ? Friend of mine managed to get her hands on a daedelus, she's delighted with it. I'm still learning with a drop spindle heh
@@callysto_ii I've got one of the brand new Electric Eel Wheel 6's - hit the market about 3 weeks ago. I also have an EEW Nano which I've had since that one hit the market a couple of years ago. The Nano is great, especially for new spinners, but the 6 is my idea of the perfect e-spinner. I'm so pleased with it I sold my Ashford e-spinner a week after the 6 arrived. I had intended to keep the 6 as a plying spinner, but it's so much like using my Ashford double drive treadle wheel, that I'm happy to spin on it, too. Between those two, I've not used my treadle wheel in about 7 months - although some of that is because I've also taken up sewing and I don't have room to have my sewing machine and cutting table up in my sitting room and have the treadle wheel in there at the same time.
@@somebodyelse138 Aye fair enough I get that, I was thinking of getting an ashford kiwi once I have enough room and budget, feels like a nice first wheel, and perhaps think of an e wheel for later, I'll keep the ones you listed in mind, thank you ! :D
@@callysto_ii You're welcome - and a Kiwi is a sensible choice if space is at a premium. I got my Traddy when I lived in a bigger place so the size of it was less of an issue. I don't find double treadle wheels comfortable to use and I also needed something that could be carried easily in one hand - which the Traddy is. Much easier than the poorly named Traveller, for instance. Do bear in mind, if cost is an issue that a brand new EEW nano can be bought for less than £120 and it has the oomph to spin at a reasonable speed. The bobbins do somewhat limit how much it will hold, but even so, it will compare well to the average spindle load and being so small it takes up virtually no room and can easily be carried around in one hand. Plus, with the 6 coming onto the market, it might also be possible to start finding them turning up on the second hand market for quite a bit less.
Oh oh! I did this on the sides of my mom's wedding dress to take it out a few inches so I could wear it for my wedding. I actually used the lace from the very fluffy '80s sleeves that I took off and it worked out great. Highly recommend.
I love Saturdays. I just got home from a long grueling day at work. I'm in my pajamas, I've got a nice snack by my side, and there's a new Bernadette video waiting in my queue. Life is good.
I moved overseas and took my cat once. It was the longest 30 days waiting for her to escape Q but it was so joyful to bring her home. Can't wait to see you introduce his Lordship to the new digs!!
Awww I’m glad his Lordship is doing well! Thank you for the video, I am glad that I can size up clothes! My weight tends to fluctuate because of a medical condition and that always makes me hesitant to put a lot of time into my own clothes, since I never know if this thing will fit a few months down the line. But this might work :)
Huzzah for His Lordship! I'm so pleased you were able to enjoy snacks together, and that he's well cared for in his quarantine quarters. I'm also happy that you're enjoying the sewing of so much lace - it's not a task I'd want to undertake, but to each their own! 💙
I literally cheered when you visited your quarantined floof. The insertion lace is amazing, but seeing Cesario again was what my heart needed on this cold dreary day. 🥰
I live in Japan, am an "average" USA size. Here I can fit into a LL, i modify 90% of the clothes I buy so it fits better. Insertion lace, opening the sides or back with ribbon, make things fit better and are a wonderful way to customize purchased clothing
The absolute very first thing I did when a possible move to Japan came up was go check that my sewing machine would work there (it did) - I knew that buying clothes would be tricky. One good thing for me: you get lots of choices in shoes size 24.5 (a UK 5.5).
Bernadette is one of my favourite youtube humans, along with Karolina Žebrowska and some other creators. Their videos are so refreshingly old fashioned, it helps me relax from all the annoying flashy neon loud naked plastic pop stuff going on. Now excuse me, I have to see which of my garments require a lace insertion!
Oh, thank God! I have really missed seeing Cesario so much! Your channel simply isn't the same without sightings of your dear, sweet pet! Welcome back, Cesario!!! :D
I laughed so hard at the drunk stitching Comment! 🤣🤣🤣 I am happy that you got to see his lordship. My husband loves that you got to see him too. He's been invested in cesario welfare because I talk about him being in quarantine ❤❤
Insertion lace is so beautiful, and I agree it should come back. It's sad that some of the most beautiful hand sewn techniques are being left in the past.
By almost sticking your nose under the needle and getting hundreds of scary moments when that thing going up and down in the front of the machine you slide your thread through hits your forehead bc you are way too close to the machine 😅
I recommend getting a bright, full spektrum lightbulb for your worklamp. They were around 20-25€ last time, I bought one (might be cheaper by now) but they are wonderful, if you don't have the luxury of sewing under bright daylight. You can actually see colors correctly and fine details are much more visible, as well. Just beware, that you may have trouble getting to sleep, if you use them late at night.
There are vintage sewing machine feet that join the lace (or any other fabric) edge to edge so you just have to feed it through the machine as it stitches.
I’m not sure it’s exactly “insertion lace” but I have a large chest and get very self conscious if the neckline of my top is revealing so adding some lace is a great way to cover some cleavage and add some prettiness. Makes me feel much more comfortable in my clothes.
Bring back modesty panels is what I say. Not all of us want to choose between necklines that feel like they're choking us or having most of our chest on display and open to the elements. A decent modesty panel would solve that problem. In fact, this has given me an idea.
I made a beautiful dress out of expensive green silk, but unfortunately the neckline gaped and I was not able to fix it to my satisfaction. So I attached a silk scarf to the V-neck (permanently).
My friend found some detachable modesty panels, they are a piece of lace that attaches to the bra straps on either side under your top. We never found them again.
I have practicly no cheast at all, so if I lean forword the slightest bit, in a neckline that does not cover all the way up to my colorbones, one can look all the way down to my waistband for I have nothing to fill the created gap . . . so I do something very similar for the opposite reason, I do not tend to use lace for it though.
Martha Pullen is an Heirloom Stitching expert who developed teaching videos on children's and dolls clothing to show the arts of insertion, embroidery and smocking techniques from the 1980s onward. Her information and techniques are useful, and she even created an insertion lace product line for the interest.
I learned all about sewing insertion lace from Martha Pullen books and videos. Excellent instruction and beautiful books. Her methods take a huge chunk of the pain out of sewing rows and rows of lace.
Those of us who still create heirloom children's clothing, even with Martha Pullen's modern methods, know that piecing together lace insertions, pairing them with entre-deux, and edging them with gathered laces is a still an active art form today.
I didn't realise insertion lace could be so straightforward!! Also thanks for mentioning Miss Fisher's murder mysteries :D I love Kerry Greenwoods work and that show is so snazzy
I am glad you got to visit with him! I imagine it soothed your soul a bit to be able to cuddle him. At least that how I would have felt. Also, a bit sad to have to leave him. But he looks to be doing well and you will be able to bring him home soon. I have way more lace than I should own in my stash and IIRC a goodly portion would be appropriate for insertion. Perhaps I will need to make a dress. Although I despise wearing white, so that’s a hurdle I need to get over. I’ve managed quite a lovely Regency wardrobe without a white gown until recently when I made a black and white striped gown, so maybe one of these Lingerie dresses can be in my future.
If you already have lace, you can dye it. Mustard for yellow; ketchup (or tomato paste) for red, etc. Too, use vinegar with your dye to set your job. Salt soak/rinse to make double sure no bleeding. A lot of work, true, but easier for small amounts to be dyed. No, I don't know how egg dying kits would work, but same principles, so....
The line about drunk stitching, in combination with the visuals of such wonky stitch-work on otherwise elegant and fine garments... hilarious! I did actually laugh out loud. Wonderful.
How splendid! The lace looks beautiful and those outdoor sewing shots make me long for England. (Did I see bluebells at one point? I do particularly adore bluebells. They're ever-so-slightly magical, especially when one wanders through a wood and finds them blanketing the ground.) And hurrah for Cesario!
And it just so happens I was contemplating the placement of lace on my baby granddaughter’s christening gown. Insertion will look beautiful! Thank you kindly for the inspiration!
I can't wait to see the next evolution of the room. Hopefully the cutting table will be there soon! The pile of books kn the corner brings me great joy, heralding the future bookcases! And it is so good to see you reunited with Cesario! This brings me so much serotonin! I look forward to him being able to lord over the manor and contribute many joy-bringing squeaks to videos!
Omg I know now how to fix a skirt that I love. It was vintage from a thrift shop and I haven’t been able to wear it because it was too small. Thank you Bernadette!
Lace always looks incredible! It is time-consuming though. Love the outdoor shots! And Lord Cesario! Love his cuteness and missed him, too! It's great to see him healthy and thriving!
Good luck with everything to do with your move. I'm American, I moved to Britain in 2004. It's home in a way that will always soothe my soul. Welcome to both you and Ceasar.

Drunk stitching may be historically accurate, but drinking and sewing is how you end up having to redo sleeves six times in one night and then again the morning after
I have a rule that after the first time I make a big mistake (applying a facing inside-out *facepalm*) I take a break. If I don't I end up making more mistakes, and then by the time I've fixed those mistakes, it's taken longer than if I had just stopped.

Same!

There are not enough heart-eye emojis in the world to express my joy at seeing you two reunited! 😍
Insertion lace is still a method used in Morocco and is called Randa. They use it to join the pieces of a Djellaba or any other garnment together.
Yes, I was thinking of exactly that! Thanks for commenting, it's nice to see how different cultures interpret the same techniques
For the tables at our wedding, we thrifted an absurd amount of cotton crochet doilies. I have been wondering how to reuse them, and you've just made me realise they could also be used as an insert in a garment!
Welp, I'm off to add old doilies to ALL the things!
OOOOH that sounds like such a good idea!

I may have searched down your insertion lace Etsy vendor, purchased mass quantities as well, and now put it into piles and try to swim through it "ala Scrouge McDuck" which is where my money went soooo it's almost the same as swimming through my money since that's where my money went. In the millionth hour of crocheting lace for a chemise yoke, this is just the perfect motivation - so thanks for keeping my faith alive that the tiny crumpled pieces will really be part of an actual garment someday!

@@annbrookens945 Thank you, but, to be totally honest, it's more the other way around - being a long time lover of knitting and crochet, I'm actually doing the sewing project to justify crocheting the lace :)

This video makes insertion lace seem a lot less intimidating, thank you for showing the process! Love to you and your little Lord!
I've seen thrift flip and upsizing videos in which the creators added other fabrics in to size up the clothes, but I've never thought about lace for that purpose. Very practical and fancy!

And am I the only one going through all my old clothes to find something to attach insertion lace to? Lace ALL THE THINGS!
As I gained quite some weight I decided just now that insertion lace shall save all my pretty dresses!!!
Really really not! I'm also having the feeling of "yes! This is something I can do!" That and too much lockdown cake, so some things do need a bit of extra room.

She seems in a really good mood, I think that's partly it (but just partly, of course)
I never thought about sewing several pieces of lace together to create patterns. And I ever less thought about doing lace insertion to add extra room to clothing and realizing it... it’s wow, mind blowing
Your visit with His Lordship is the single most adorable thing I've seen other than my own children.
Awww poor Cesario misses his mom. I bet when you bring him home he will explore every inch of your new place. He will love it. He will be excited to spend time with you. I foresee lots of sewing and him running around.
His Lordship seemed exceedingly happy to see you and/or the biscuits you brought to bribe your way back into His graces.
This video couldn’t come at a better time. I was just watching an episode of Hercule Poirot and apparently I know the story enough to have my eyes caught by frivolous details such as the embroided flowers on an actress’ blouse. *why you gotta call a girl out like that-*
Exactly what I was doing too.
Drunk sticthing! Best description of my attempts at sewing a straight seam!
Nice to see you finally reunited with Cesario (even temporarily) 😊

I moved overseas and took my cat once. It was the longest 30 days waiting for her to escape Q but it was so joyful to bring her home. Can't wait to see you introduce his Lordship to the new digs!!
Awww I’m glad his Lordship is doing well! Thank you for the video, I am glad that I can size up clothes! My weight tends to fluctuate because of a medical condition and that always makes me hesitant to put a lot of time into my own clothes, since I never know if this thing will fit a few months down the line. But this might work :)
Having different widths of insertion lace to use sounds like a fine tool to have in your repertoire of ways to make clothes that are easy to alter.
It's so lovely to see you sewing in a park rather than in the concrete jungle. Gorgeous!
Huzzah for His Lordship! I'm so pleased you were able to enjoy snacks together, and that he's well cared for in his quarantine quarters. I'm also happy that you're enjoying the sewing of so much lace - it's not a task I'd want to undertake, but to each their own! 💙

Insertion lace is so beautiful, and I agree it should come back. It's sad that some of the most beautiful hand sewn techniques are being left in the past.
I'm gonna call this out:
Anyone that can sew on lace by machine is a fricking wizard (how do your eyes even see the edge... how?)
How about a Magnifying glass with light. Like dentists and jewelers use?
@@stormveil Oh no I imagined it and it looks beautifully ridiculous 🤣
I do the same thing. I hate feeling like my chest is hanging out and the lace gives an extra feminine touch to a dress or top.
I have a few of her books and they are just beautiful.
For me, the art is FINDING lace! It's either 100% polyester or unaffordable. :( (Unless we're talking bobbin lace.)
I didn't realise insertion lace could be so straightforward!!
Also thanks for mentioning Miss Fisher's murder mysteries :D I love Kerry Greenwoods work and that show is so snazzy
Bernadette,
Your videos are therapeutic for me! You have such calming energy.
You can buy lace in other colours. Just as well, because me and white really don't do well together.
Came for the insertion lace instruction then totally fanned out over seeing his lordship once again! Thanks for the update! Smiles, Stella
