My biggest attraction to these cabinets has always been how they help to display plants in an aesthetic way. I also like how they can help increase your growing space if natural light is at a premium.
Where I live humidity sits around 20 indoors in the winter. Having cabinets has allowed me to have plants that I wouldn’t otherwise have. One of them sits around 75 and one closer to 90 without extra humidity. Im always having to open the door to bring it down! Plants that I’ve kept for years (like my African Violets) grow so much better in the cabinet. I bought an angel wing begonia and it really wasn’t doing well, but when I put it in the cabinet it took off. Love love love cabinets…
Thanks for sharing! I am sort of a new houseplant parent, and your videos were a joy for me. I'm considering getting one of these cabinets once I get enough plants, so thanks for this video!
Boy the cabinet didn’t look over filled when you showed us. It looked just right. But when you shows all the plants out on the gooor I said whoa they’ll never fit in the cabinet that they just came out of. You have it well organized. It does look beautiful.
I live in North Iowa ( about 2 hours south of Minneapolis ). I have a milsbo tall and a rudsta. They have been LIFE SAVERS for my plants. Keeps the more sensitive ones in a warm environment for the 7+ months of cold weather we have. if you live in the northern US/Canada or a place that has a similar climate I 100% recommend splurging on one.
@@louise3953 Well any plant can benefits from it but in mine I have anthuriums, alocasias/colocasias, piper plants, Patchouli, some of my more expensive philos. As they tend to like it a bit warmer. My rudsta and milsbo stay around 75-80 during the winter with my house set on 68. I also use it for props & plants that need a little more tlc.
This came at a perfect time because I was considering an Ikea greenhouse but wasn’t sure if it was worth it. I’m currently battling mealies so I guess I need to handle that first. Lol
Thankyou for a very thorough review on the cabinet. In Australia 🇦🇺 2024 these cabinets are $349 AUD. I was seriously considering one but now see it wouldn't suit the plants I have.. A really good informative update.
Hey Melissa, thanks for these cabinet videos. I am having issues with weatherstripping. Can you share which type of weatherstripping is your favorite? Thanks.
Now that it is summer ☀️ at about 80 degrees, none of my alocasia are floppy..however, in the cooler season..and we get cold in Colorado..it's an issue..they are all in chunky soil at this point..
Thanks for this update! They’re always so interesting. I’m confused about what purpose the fans serve? Mine makes the humidity go down drastically so I’ve been turning it off.
To the move the air so you don't get mold, fungal issues, etc. I have heard of someone else talking about the fans and lowering humidity so not sure what they ended up doing but airflow is super important for me over humidity :)
You have such a nice cabinet setup and beautiful plants! I would love to do a something similar. I currently am using Aerogarden trio tabletop grow lights that dim for many of my plants which is nice on days I have light sensitivity due to migraine. I’m wondering are the T5 lights you use in the cabinet dimable? Thank you for sharing your cabinet!❤
I am going to get my cabinet before winter and the cold winter months. I want to use it for my Hoyas. Do you recommend switching from glass shelves to metal for those also.
I have 2 mini humidifier and 2 fans on my ikea cabinet. The water is so hard that calcium buildup in the fans and I don’t know how to clean it. Any suggestions?
Melissa, what is your favorite substrate for Hoya? Do you do PON at all and may I ask why or why not? I am newbie and trying to do the research up front. :-) Thank you!!
I’ve long thought that the IKEA cabinet looked nice in your home as do the plants you keep inside it, so this comprehensive evaluation was very enjoyable. I took particular notice of your variegated pterodactyl, oops I mean frydek, a plant with a striking appearance in my humble opinion. Gotta get one of those. I’m happy to say that my pterodactyl just produced 2 beautiful eggs, oops I mean leaves, which pleases me. Lol. Thanks for the video.
Can I ask where you got the wire shelving? I’m just setting mine up now and am trying to decide whether to get the acrylic or the wire ones but I’m not sure where I can get them to fit without having to cut to fit! I’m in the UK so not sure if I can get same ones. X
I can send you a link to what I purchased. It's off amazon so not sure if it's available to you. They are the perfect size! I love the acrylic look too but probably more cost effective going with wire :) www.amazon.com/dp/B000JF7WYS?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzmeli0992-20&creativeASIN=B000JF7WYS&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.2CXDQMX1UIXI&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d_asin
@@plantsbymelissa that would be great if you send me the link as I’m hoping to get whatever I decide to use in the next week or so. Acrylic or metal! Look forward to the Amazon link. 🙂
@@plantsbymelissa thankyou for the link Melissa however they don’t seem to do black and I have the black one. Hey ho. Acrylic it will have to be I reckon. However my husband is an engineer and has machinery that can make the holes in the acrylic so I can but acrylic sheets and make them ourselves so much cheaper. Thanks for your input though. Loving your videos and adore your 3 cats! 💕
How do you manage with predatory mites in the cabinet? I used some in mine and they just got everywhere and made the whole cabinet look a little too 'messy', getting between the glass panes and metal supports etc... so I've stopped using them in case I was using them wrong (it was my first time).
The mites got all over my glass lol I just let them do their thing and I usually give my cabinet a deep clean once a month and clean the glass then I refresh the mites but they seem to get everywhere 🙈
Beneficial insects helped the most, mites and nematodes as well as a lot of daily checking and removing any I saw right away. I cut off a lot of new growth - thrips love the juicy new leaves.
I purchased 2 Milsbo tall and 1 short when they were cheaper, I can’t believe they’re 300 now! 😱😱 I installed weather strips on them and the beneficial bugs get stuck to them, can’t really 100% remove the bugs either, so that’s fun! 😒🫣🤣 I really enjoy my cabinets too, I have a wall of them! 🤣🤣 Great video, I really enjoyed it, as usual!🪴

What types of plants do you keep in there to keep safe in the winter? I’m in Minneapolis❄️

Theyve got acrylic pegboards and shelving on etsy ! Beautiful cabinet girl! Im finnalllllyyy biting the bullet and getting one lol.

I think it depends on what you want it for. I think it's worth it but I wouldn't buy it again. I am very happy I have one and I love it for props!
I got one on eBay with all the equipment and grow lights for it for around 180 Euros. Still the best buy I ever made

I’m in the process to buy the accessories so your video helped. Thx! 🪴🌿🙋🏼♀️💚
Thank you! I'm glad it helped! 💚🥰

The fans help circulate air, which plants need/ have in nature. Mold and fungus happens with low air flow, I believe

I've got a 10x20 wood barn building I'm going to convert into a greenhouse. Hopefully I'll be able to grow my own Dargon Fruit.
That’s so neat
that's amazing!!
How about painting the metal with anti-rust outdoor spray paint? Thanks for your insight.
Of course! I'm not sure about the spray 🙈

Melissa, what is your favorite substrate for Hoya? Do you do PON at all and may I ask why or why not? I am newbie and trying to do the research up front. :-) Thank you!!
I have spent close to $600 for my cabinet. I did buy the cabinet at $229 (on sale).
Sorry, one more question. Do you think Hoyas will like the cabinet? I am putting it together tomorrow.

Oh my gosh, start from the top and work your way down when cleaning lol you were making me twitch haha you'll have to redo the bottom all over again!

IKEA not nice to raise prices around covid and possibly due to demand. It would be ideal to have a metal cabinet similar so mold would not be issue.
I didn't even know the cost of it went up until I looked earlier today! It's definitely expensive!
😊😊😊
How did you deal with the thrips ? 😩
Beneficial insects helped the most, mites and nematodes as well as a lot of daily checking and removing any I saw right away. I cut off a lot of new growth - thrips love the juicy new leaves.

Why does a person use a plant cabinet like this. What is its main purpose
better conditions for the plant, people grow house plants in all types of environments even unsuitable ones
