  • Recently purchased the Skywatcher SolarQuest Mount and thought I'd unbox, build, review and test as I've not seen much info about the solarquest alt az mount.
The Heliofind unit tracks the sun for hours, staying in the centre of view at all the time and is great for solar viewing. It also has an 8 way fine adjustment slide should you need.
The Skywatcher Solarquest It takes 8 x AA batteries of you could use an external power supply. Because its only making very small adjustments as it tracks the sun, the batteries are lasting ages.
A nice little product from Sky-Watcher, the SolarQuest might be a "one trick pony" but it does it very well. I'm using my single stacked Coronado PST with either a ZWO ASI290MM or ZWO ASI120 MC camera and weight is not an issue.

Is there any way to orient the PST so that the eyepiece is pointed up, not out the side?

Hi, you can get a L shaped dovetail that might help www.firstlightoptics.com/skywatcher-mounts/skywatcher-l-bracket-dovetail.html

@@NickCookOnTheNet I have an L-bracket, but I discovered that you need to follow one more step: Peeling back the sticker in the middle of the dovetail shoe reveals 4 screws. Take off the dovetail shoe and reorient it 90°. Then your L-bracket will be oriented in the right direction.

take very long to find and track the sun, I'm just waiting here for 5mins. but nothing works... waiting waiting and waiting... now clouds come back again. ... I think when you go with a skywatcher eq5 Pro, you are very faster as with this solarquest... - ! I'm here just for 5mins, but nothing works.. the redlight is blinking... how long did you wait ?

That's not right at all. I always make sure mine is pointing left of the sun so it always slews to the right and it never takes longer than 2 minutes. Have you tried a manual reset?

@@NickCookOnTheNet thanks for answer. what do you mean no longer then 2mins.? Now i take it off. because sun is gone. what do you mean with "mine is pointing left of the sun?".... the mount is more left to sun?... what is a manuel reset?.... on/off ? does this solarquest still work, when the sun is behind the cloud?

@@NickCookOnTheNet maybe it does not wirk, because I'm inside my house at the window, but the window is great, and the sun shinning in to this room...

@@lucasgatsas It takes a maximum of 2 minutes from when I switch the mount on for it to then level and then it use its own GPS data to determine angle the sun is at. The mount will then go clockwise to find the sun (the recommendation in the manual is to point to the left of the sun to reduce searching time). Clouds do effect the accuracy. It will need to have a clear line of sight to the sun, if you are indoors that may affect it, it should be used outdoors. @@lucasgatsas I think that's the problem, try outside with it.

Very nice! If I can find one in stock I shall order one. I have both of the Coronado mounts for my PST Doublestack but I recently acquired a Lunt Doublestack in need of it's own mount. Thx for posting. Curious about the shield though, did you make that or order it somewhere? If ordered can you post a link? Thx!
