i love how everytime José Carlos Macedo pops up in his little Renault Clio from Renault Portugal you can hear someone swearing in Portuguese, just out of shock for his speed. he finished sixth overall, leader in class, in front of many drivers with much larger teams and budgets. a superb rally for him.
Back then, Rallye de Portugal was the best in the world! Those drivers, those cars, the crowds and even the journalists - especially the late Martin Holmes speaking with Carlos Sainz - are unforgettable 🙏
We must be greatful that you have these images and share them with us. As someone that couldn’t experience this live due to age is really cool to see the group a cars on full pace.
And to see the behind the scenes stuff as well, official WRC footage hardly ever shows anything like this. You see the culture in and out, not just the driving on the stages. Time capsules of these times.
Compared to the present time cars, it seems that they run in slow motion... Even so, they were amazing and probably, Group A was the best we ever had. And the sound of the engines....so distinct from each other and yet... AWESOME. Im not trying to disrespect actual WRC cars, they are amazing and look also great, but it is always better to watch a WRC Focus or Celica, than a Fiesta or a Yaris. Just saying.
The thing about the speed is actually interesting. Nowadays they drive on shorter stages and shorter rallies overall, so they can also drive on faster, more straight roads, as the FIA regulated average speed limit is easier to keep down with shorter stages. Back in the old days, stages were much more twisty that kept the overall speed down and provided better challenge for the drivers, it was much more tiring effort to turn the car all the time in twisty stages. So the comparison can't be done that easily between this era and current era.
Kankkunen said in one interview about this race that he listened how Delecour revved the Escort's engine heavily before starting the super special stage and felt that it's gonna go any moment soon. Which it did, recalling that the engine swallowed one of the valves and that was it.
Those were the days when you could buy a "homologation special" to run on the road and bring it legally close to Gr.A spec...never again, too "unsafe", too "risky" for current generations.
@@chemagonzalezrodriguez8791 gracias por responder. Cuando lo vi hoy en este vídeo pensé que era Clay Regazzoni pero claro, es imposible porque éste estaba ya por ese año en silla de ruedas. Un saludo.

Amazing video... But why is Tommi Makannin diving a Nissan?! Need to go back and check my WRC knowledge
He drove for NME for a few seasons in group A and F2 cars before moving on to Ralliart.

Yes. If recalling correctly, they started it on tarmac on Friday, then went to gravel for Saturday and then back to tarmac on Sunday.
Quién es el piloto que aparece en el minuto 05:18 hablando con Chus Puras?
Jorge Recalde piloto Argentino (que en Paz descanse)
