Walking in the Varissuo Suburb in Turku, Finland - July 2022

Varissuo is a suburb in Turku, Finland, and was built in the 1970s and 1980s. The area consists of a shopping center, Itäkeskus, and blocks of flats surrounded by greenery. This district has the second highest population in Turku and about 60% speaks an immigrant language.

Varissuo has been named Finland's second best suburb, thanks to excellent green town planning (layout) including facilities (mall with specialty shops, also restaurants, health centre, library, international and elementary schools, kindergarten, creches, community centre), a great variety of residential alternatives (high-rise apartment buildings, low-rise apts, row houses, old folks homes) spread out amid greenery and partly rolling hills. There is ample opportunity for exercise including pedestrian zones, sports fields, playgrounds (with various equipment), gyms, underground ice rink, bicycle paths, hiking and ski paths through surrounding forests.

Asuin Varissuolla 1978-1994. Se on mulle tärkeä paikka, vaikka on tosi erilainen kuin lapsuudessa. Vakkea voisi tuoda enemmän julkisuuteen positiivisesti, esim jalankulku alueella on suunniteltu todella hyvin ja siellä on luonto lähellä.
