Im a child therapist and this is not being done properly. We give them tons of toys, coloring pages, and prompt them while they are engaged in something fun. This is an interrogation with a really nice person but you don't interact with small children like this. He should have had snacks too. There isn't a single toy in that room! Ugh this makes me sad.

He told her the MOST IMPORTANT THING TO HIM FIRST, that he hadn’t eaten yet all she wanted was to interview him for answers. I understand she desperately wanted info BUT treat the baby FIRST! Hopefully this interviewer looks back on this and sees her sad awful mistake and does better for other children she has to work with. Gosh this hurts my soul to watch and KNOW how this all ended. Promising food could be construed by a defense lawyer as bribing or influencing the child. It’s very important that the interviewer keeps a relatively neutral relationship and the child doesn’t start trying to please the interviewer. She would know her colleagues heard this. Charlie comes back without his jacket. It’s likely that he was given something to sit and eat while the interviewer conferred with colleagues.

That is the reason you give children toys in such a situation: they might reenact some traumatic event that can't be put into words otherwise... Food, Drink, Toilet, getting comfortable by not overheating, some other person as a whitness of what gets done or omitted... All that "o-kay", although she keeps on asking and asking, THAT would have made me angry as a child. The room looks stuffy and grandparent-like, not at all comfortable: The questioning lady puts the answers in the boys mouth, not letting him formulate the scenes in his own words ... ugly flowers? should give you the creeps and asking WHY are you afraid of some of them. All those contradictions she led slide - Mommy stayed back there, mommy went to work, at a specific time, the over-precise naming of the holiday resort, who took the boy home? Who was with him then? Who was missing? 4 persons went on that trip, how many came really back (and what are the reasons of not coming? Clearly NOT the pretty crystals) The adults know too much, so they forget to ask the right questions and listen to a very young child - him being alone and not once asking for his family is telling. He does know that something is off, waits for the adults to explain WHAT they want of him, what they really know - crack his wall of studied in answers and get to the bottom of the situation. Give him dinosaurs, a dollhouse family of 4, toy camping equipment and some small rocks or crystals to play out the trip to the park. Pencil and paper to draw the scene where mommy said good bye, would also have been helpful...

I work in forensics. My department is not with children but I know from experience that we do not offer children anything. A) adults can get food themselves, the child cannot. This could be used to say that Charlie gave the woman the answers he thought she wanted to hear to get more food. B) people believe adults… people are way less likely to believe a small child. You do not want any risk at all of them throwing the interrogation out, or claiming mistrial. He was fine waiting an hour for food, the bigger worry is the father.

They cannot have a situation where a defense attorney says they made too cosy a relationship and the child felt obliged to “give back” a story. They were only 10-15 minutes, and he comes back without his jacket, so obviously someone out there made him more comfortable. Yes, I kept thinking she was ignoring openings that could have told her more. She sounded cold in the way she interacted with the boy. And the fact she didn’t stop immediately & get him something to eat confirms she has a cold personality! She’s not suited for interviewing young children - and maybe no one else, either.

@halodisciple8459 this makes sense... but if the child asked for food on his own, and then was denied like what happened here, wouldn't that be the same thing ? Because the kid would be more likely to just tell the interviewer what he thought she wanted to hear, just to get it over with, or perhaps to convince her to change her mind about giving him food?
I don't know if I'm making any sense... i guess what I'm trying to say is, to me, if a kid in a situation like this asks states he hasn't been fed since the previous night, wouldn't it make sense to have another person at the station feed him before they got started with the interview? Even adults can't concentrate correctly when our tummies are rumbling. Make the kid physically comfortable first, and THEN proceed with the questions. Just common sense to me. But I'm not a child psychologist so what do I know lol

They also should have given him access to cratons and paper. This interview was handled completely wrong, as anyone who has ever dealt with small children should have known. how much 'training' does it take to know that if a child is hungry you give him something to eat, Common sense, common humanity, stop writing stuff down and scaring the kid - you're getting a video shot, so stop writing and get the kid some food and give him a cuddle or a hug if he wants it. And give him the writing pad and let him draw whatever he wants.

Not only because it's clearly bothering him as it's the first thing he talks about, but he is a young growing child who needs regular nourishment - ESPECIALLY if you want his brain to be functioning well to answer these kinds of questions!
