The 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment was given the nick name Old Faithful in Korea because of its unyielding reliability in attack and defence. When the Commanding Officer calls the Battalion onto Parade he calls the Battalion by its nick name Old Faithful. Today and one cubic yard concrete block sits beside the Battalion Parade ground. Inscribed on that block is 38th. Denoting that the block is a 38th parallel marker that 3 RAR stole from DMZ when the Battalion was returned to Australia. That Battalion is dear to my heart because I was a Paratrooper in that Battalion 3 RAR Old Faithful.
The Australians were a small part of the Commonwealth Brigadevwhich was a small part of a UN operation led by the USA. Stop trying to say you won that war as well.
The Australians were the first into combat in Korea, nine days before MacArthur got his command. They also formed a force under their command comprising of Britain, Canada, India, South Africa and New Zealand.
Aside from the South Korean and US troops already in country. And the US troops sent from Japan before the Australians arrived. And the US airforce units flying missions from Japan. Aside from that, they were first. As if that was important.
@ Erm, the first country to come to Korea’s assistance was Australia, flying out of their base in Japan. You’re confused by when the first Australian troops arrived as head of the commonwealth force.
@seanlander9321 You're trying to believe that the Australians were assisting South Korea *before* the Americans were? *Before* the Americans *IN* South Korea? Lol That's fine impressive level of self importance right there. Typical Australian: delusional and ignorant of history
We thank the Australia army and its excellent service in Korea. They were a key element that lead to the success in repelling the communist take over of South Korea. I will remember the Australian troops in Vietnam as being fierce fighters and also a jolly good group to be with during break time. They put kangaroos on all our vehicles. They had a template and paint to 🦘 kangaroo imprint on anything that did not move. Great soldiers and wonderful mates. I now live in Daejeon, South Korea and we are in a free and democratic country because of their sacrifices in a far away country!
I didn't know about the kangaroo stencils, that's pretty funny. A kangaroo road sign is pretty common on rural roads here, they are a major traffic hazard at night. Some funny bugger has developed a stencil to go over that to turn it into a T-Rex. Bigger head, little arms. Warning, T-Rex's in the area. I wonder if it's related at all?
RIP to my mother's brothers who served with the RAR in the Korean War, they came home safely but have now died. I am proud of their service and I was proud to live in South Korea and see what their participation helped create.
3 RAR (3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment) is a small unit. It always has been. They're also amongst the absolute pinnacle of special forces on the entire planet. They were regularly used as the global "tip of the spear" in the war on terror, often placed into forward combat roles far in advance of units like the British 22 SAS and US Delta Force. There isn't a single military force on the planet that could sleep soundly at night knowing that they likely faced them in combat.
Some thought the U.K troops were cannon fodder too... The Brits, had only just handed over to the Aussies and Canadians after holding the line for several days, we were just taking our turn, we got unlucky, Many Brits love us, stop using the few a-holes that were A-holes, most *real* Aussies have British/Welsh, Scottish and Irish heritage (Alos German), i love them all.

The biggest problem, the British government thought that the Australian troops and other countries troops were just cannon fodder
Don't talk such BS. Think a little deeper.
You're a couple of Wars too late.
