The team behind EXO's performances and concerts get some really neat new tech & stage designs for each tour (I'm excited to see what new stuff they big to their upcoming tour!) EXO's subunit CBX actually had a stage for their song Off The Wall during their Magical Circus tour where they danced with holograms!~ One of my favorite EXO stages is from their last tour, The ElyXiOn, for their song Forever; I think it's difficulty is subtle, but I also don't think I ever saw footage of one of them making a mistake, when I think a mistake would almost be inevitable~~~ Also, what you said about their ability to play to both the audience and camera is something us fans have discussed. Even in a sold-out arena, fans way in the back have mentioned how they logically know it can't be true but it feels as if EXO sees each fan at an event. We also say they always know where the camera is & how best to play to it^.^ I had wondered about the lightsaber colors as well!~ If you look, on the back of each member's jacket is a number that they selected years ago to be their representative number; it's often on their costumes^.^ Since each member got to pick those numbers, I wondered if they had been allowed to select their lightsaber color. I imagine the leader, Suho, who is a big Star Wars fan would've maybe requested his~~~
When you talk about how fluidly they go from interacting with the audience, to looking at the cameras, to singing, to dancing... I think this is where you find that the difference between Western music and Kpop music culture is really apparent. When Kpop groups make songs they are ALWAYS meant to be performed live. They don't let the recorded songs do the work by going around the airwaves only. Once a song is released they go to 5-6 music shows a week for 2 to 3 weeks to perform the songs on TV. These shows start early in the morning for rehearsals, and end around 6PM with a semi-live (there's a few minutes of editing delay) show on TV. So at the end of a promotional cycle a group would have performed their song live at least 20 times. Then they start performing them in concerts where even non promoted songs get choreographies. What I'm trying to say is that you find it very impressive, and it is, but it is also because they are used to it and so it is easy for them.
@@DrMarcReynolds I think it's amazing that someone with a performance directing background is reacting to these videos... I have seen many people who are not familiar with Kpop disparaging it by saying that if these people wanted to do performances where the dancing means they sometimes need backtrack they should have just become dancers. But they dreamed of becoming dance-singers and they put the work to become dance-singers... It doesn't mean they can't sing as well as others in the studio (for example, EXO's Chen and Onestar singing May We Bye... there aren't a lot of male singers who can sing that song even in the studio) or even on stage without any dancing. I think this is what got me into Kpop a decade ago as a uni student. TH-cam was just starting, and it was quite new for me to see so many live performances that satisfied both eyes and ears available on-demand.
A fan found that the lightsaber colors are the same ones used for the "power orbs" used for a later MV, "Power". This song is actually a collab project for The Force Awakens. EXO'rDIUM was awarded concert of the year.

As far as I know, messing with the mics like they do is something they're told to do. Idols can get major flack lip syncing during a concert (it is even illegal in a couple of countries where they are most popular), so it's like creating a visual subconscious connection for the audience. It sort of mimics the idea of a hand mic, which people tend to associate with live singing. It has always looked like additional choreography to me, not just a stylistic choice or habit.

actually i often wonder about the annoyances surrounding the equipment. i noticed that with dimash a lot. i don’t mean the times he takes his earpiece on and off. i like that. but when he’s clearly having a difficult time trying to get it to stay in place and you can see it’s an obstacle to his dancing. surely the tech is there?

Not winter..this concert started at the end of July 2016, so it probably still summer!
