My name is Linda, ALA unit #833, I qualified under my husband, father but chose my grandfather Luther Sims for his service in France. When he passed away from the lingering effects of mustard gas during the great depression the American legion gave my grandmother 30 dollars a month because she was the widow of a veteran. God bless the American legion.

Why doesn't the American Legion allow ALL veterans to join? We have the VFW for combat veterans. I served in the United States Marine Corps from 1977 to 1981. I was obviously not in combat, there was no combat during those years. But you don't need to have been in combat to join the American Legion, ONLY served in the military when there was combat of some kind. You could have been thousands of miles away from it. Veterans do not get to choose whether there was any combat during their time of service. Because there was no combat during my time of service, I feel like I am not even considered a real veteran, even though I have all the paperwork to prove it.
I really urge anyone joining the military to reconsider. It's really not worth it to lose your individual freedom, mental health and possibly your life for a society that simply seeks to send you to war for it's own financial gain and the power games of the elite. In my opinion, the public itself has rarely taken into careful consideration the consequences and grave responsibility or fully weighed the the justness and reasonable cause of going to war. We owe the veterans an unpayable debt for what we've done to them and what that's done to the rest of world. Don't wantonly sell away your life!
