Just picked up an 891 and finally got on the air. Your videos are great for us new hams. So many features in this radio. I found another person made a cheat sheet with a listing for all the menu items, which also helps me find stuff. Thanks again for demonstrating this feature as I was not aware this was even available. 73 👍
This is really appreciated. So many radio 1 and done 'reviews' out there. So seeing someone like you use the same radio for a long time and then share something that delves a bit deeper is much appreciated. Love my 891 but am a bit intimidated by the menu tree up to what I've figured out myself. Then I see you deep dive into menus and what else the radio can really do by these type examples . I love activating POTA, and this stuff is invaluable! Keep up the 891 tips and tricks. 73
Some useful menu settings for this are 03-01 and 03-02, especially 03-01 DVS RX OUT LEVE which controls how loudly the radio speaker outputs your recorded message. Typically I don't want to hear the recording at much more than a low volume, especially if I'm in a busy area.
Many thanks for this. I did find that I had to enable the PB button for every band I wanted to use, otherwise, the message would play, but wouldn't actually transmit G8XDD
Thanks so much for introducing this tutorial series on the FT 891. I have an 891 and am looking forward to what you have to share. I’ll definitely be using the information in this video for my next POTA activation!
Very interesting tutorial. Just a note from my experience: when releasing the PTT button a click noise is produced which gets recorded at the beginning of the recorded message. This can be significantly reduced (although not completely avoided) by keeping the PTT pressed while recording the message and releasing it only after the recording is ended by pressing the multifunction knob. Alternatively (maybe) one could activate the PTT through the CAT instead of pressing the button on the microphone... or using an external microphone... anyway great functionality and good tutorial, thanks KB9VBR!
This function is essential for those POTA activations where cell/internet is not available for spotting, or if there is a lull in the contacts/pileup. Another great informative video as always, thanks Michael! 73~NG9B
Surprisingly, the FH-2 is not included in the FT-891 box. This is an absolutely necessary thing that fully reveals the potential of the message recording function. It weighs nothing, allows you to do CW QSO automatically, and with proper skill - even almost automatic SSB QSO😀 Thanks for the video Michael, I learn something new every time, 73!
What's even more surprising is that Yaesu included the FH-2 with the FTdx3000, but I had to pay another $90 to buy the accessory board to make it work with voice keying.
@@KB9VBRAntennas So the voice memory module in FT DX-3000 is not installed by default?😱 What greed) Although considering that FT-818 with the necessary options costs as FT-891 - it is quite logical😅
Thanks for this informative video. The more I learn about the Ft-891, the more I love it. Such a capable radio with lots to offer - if you know how to use it. Cheers and 73!
This also helped me understand my FT-710 regarding the voice memory. While they have differing menus it was helpful seeing how the message is recorded and used. Thanks. 73 de KN6ZVI
I'm an old guy.. I didn't think of Ted K.. rather, Paul Harvey.. He was famous for "And NOW, the rest of the story". I wish he was still around. He was from the day when News was News. He would go beyond the headlines. This is what Michael is doing here. I love it.
With the "on the road" videography and historical content in Michael's POTA videos, I think there's a little bit of Charles Kurault showing through too... KZ9V
Thank you for everyone who has an FT 891, I had a problem getting the memory voice set up on mine and could not find a video that was anywhere near this good.
Thank you, this was timely, getting close to my first activation and I was about to look for a guide to skip reading the manual and this video pops up on my Home Screen! 73 NB2R
Very useful video, Michael! It hadn't occurred to me how useful this feature could be until I saw another of your recent videos and, of course, this video. Thanks much!

Thanks for the videos… I’m really digging POTA due to your videos.. just picked up a 891 and now when I see what this little radio does I’m sorry I bought my DX10… well also met sorry… but the 891 would be a great base radio for newbie’s and seasoned ham’s
Interesting that they hid the menu until you enabled it. Great info. I can't wait for your future videos. I watched your videos early on and bought my 891 and the same tuner you use based on watching them. Great radio.
As soon as I’m done trying to get my icom 706mkiiG back on line, I may just break down and get this radio instead. Thanks for the video! I’d love to see a similar set of videos on the Ft-818!

Here's the video that Dave is referencing: th-cam.com/video/0A89Dd9dFXM/w-d-xo.html You can see him use the CW memory keyer at about 2/3's in on the video.
The 891 is a powerhouse in the field once you have it set to your preferences. You'll enjoy not having to tear down your shack in order to do an activation.
Good plan. The 891 is smaller, lighter, and a bit more durable. My awesome 7300 stays safely in my shack while the FT-891 and G-90 do all the dirty work outside. KZ9V
@@davewhite7679 I have used the 7300 very carefully for 130 POTA activations since I started activating back in April 2021 🙂. I try to be very careful as the 7300 is my only HF rig.

I've found this feature super useful for when you need to catch you breath, take a drink, or organize your notes. It will help you a lot when you hit the road.
Excellent video, thank you. Sounds as if the '891 is a glorified IC-703/IC-706! My one question is if the memory keyer will also work for RTTY contest phrases. AC9DN
I wouldn't call it a glorified 706, the DSP and filtering are generations better than what the 706 had to offer. But the FT-891 does fill a hole that the IC-706 left when it was discontinued. The voice keyer only works on SSB. There is a separate memory keyer for CW. But nothing for RTTY.
im wondering the same thing. the 7300 all you have to do is press and hold and it will repeat every few secs depending on how long you set duration for
Do you switch to a constant carrier mode like CW, RTTY, or AM to do the tune? I've found that if you stay in SSB and try to do a tune, there will not be enough modulation for the tuner to carry out the task, so it will reattempt tuning with every transmission. I also think the 939 has latching relays. If it does, you can turn the power off after a tune and the tuner will hold the setting. I had to do this while we were going mobile for the MN QSO party. The wind & driving caused enough variability that the tuner wanted to retune with each transmission. I'd do a full tune and then disconnect the power on my LDG tuner to hold the settings.
The menu structure is different, but the Yaesu FT-991A has an almost identical voice and CW message memory and uses the same FH-2 remote keypad accessory. KZ9V
@@KB9VBRAntennas The 891 memory can be set up to run repeatedly at predetermined time intervals in what Yaesu refers to as "beacon mode". But I haven't found a way of just sending a message, like "CQ" repeatedly while waiting for a response in the way that I can with my IC-7300. KZ9V

Is there any way to cause the message to repeat? Or do you have to physically press a button each time?
No there's not. You need to press the button every time.
Is there a way to set it to auto play the recorded message in fixed intervals instead of having to press a button each time? (like the Icom 7300)
No there is not. The FT-891 does not have an auto repeat setting.
