  • Broadcasting on the Wonderful World of Disney, it is the grand opening television special of Walt Disney World in 1971. Julie Andrews hosts this celebration of the new Disney destination along with celebrity appearances by Glen Campbell, Bob Hope, Buddy Hackett and Jonathan Winters. This archival footage is a true Disney treasure mostly because of the Disney music in its 1970's style. Some highlights are the musical arrangements of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "It's A Small World". Enjoy this Disney classic television event!

Wow. I am so very proud to have been one of the singers in that grand choir. When we finished "When You Wish Upon A Star," the park opened and has been open ever since.

I took a bus from Columbus, Nebraska to Orlando to be here on Opening Day of 1971. I was siting on the curb watching the whole parade pass by. In fact, right before the Jamaican steel drum music I think that young kid in the crowd who gets up and tries to get a better seat but then backs down is me. Video time 1:07:21 I fully remember making this move during the parade. It looks like skinny me and I would have been 20 years of age at the time. And guess what? I have never been back to Disney World over the years but I was there on opening day. I was also the 7th person in line when the gates officially opened. Great fond memories to say the least. Finally, I had little money that day so I had to thumb a ride from Orlando to the park. And a real Hippie Van stopped and gave me a ride. Isn't that cool? And it only cost around $8 for admission. Now it's over $100 to get in. How times have changed.

It's weird how before Disney there was nothing like Disney and there still hasn't been anything like Disney since Disney. It truly is special and we may never get it again if it goes away.

Worked on the Contemporary Hotel with my dad during summer break of my college years. He was project manager over the concrete work. At times he would have as many as 500 workers on the books. It still amazes me that the project was completed as quickly as it was. They did not have the technology that we have today to complete projects quickly instead they worked around the clock to get things completed on schedule. Fun time in my life.

My father worked on the World's HVAC systems. He and five other journeymen would leave at night on Sunday from Miami to spend all week and return late on Fridays. Many times they worked through the weekends. And all the time there he didn't take one photo. That I wish I had, It must have been magnificent to see the grounds rise from a swamp.

@@TrentonBlessWrestlemania489 If Walt Disney's condition weren't known by his inner circle to be terminal, they probably would have disabused him of the notion that EPCOT was viable. Maybe the 1970s Walt Disney World *is* what Walt Disney would have settled for. Roy O. Disney did a remarkable job of working many of Walt's more fanciful ideas into the Florida Project.

Yes it is great. I auditioned in August 6 weeks before opening day October 1st, 1971. I had not been home more than 5 minutes when the phone rang. WDW Entertainment Division from Califorina was calling to tell me I got the part and would start the next day becoming an Original Cast Member of the WDW Entertainment Division! 18 hour days through October 1st, 1973. WE did it all back then and then some. Worked with the greats of Hollywood, Movies, TV and Broadway & They All loved coming to WDW. We could do it all back then. I would do 12 days and then off for 36 hours. My get away was Key West and if you saw back then 6 or 8 people walking around Key West it was as crowd. I know it has all changed. There were only 1.5 million people living in Florida back then, now 21 million! ouch! The 1st two years were magical and for all cast members omg the few hours off were always Party Land. Ok I will not tell tales I do not have as many lawyers as Disney does! lol Cast members from back then know what I am talking about. I then went on the road as a Headliner after 2 years with Disney and toured the country for 2 years. My dream was to always get booked and play Broadway NYC. That dream came true. So with 4+ years of 24/7 Entertainment my dreams came true and then some. I was back at WDW in 1998 at Christmas to be Honored and I want to go back this coming Christmas 2017. I hope I can make that dream come true. :( i will be alone this time, I will have the Magic of Disney to get me through. I thing I keep seeing people saying in comments and today, they use the word 'Rides'. They were called 'Attractions' and if you were heard saying Rides it was grounds for being fired. Walt never thought of them as Rides, ever. He created 'Attractions' to experience. We also had who we called Greta Groomer. She walked all around the Magic Kingdom and Resorts to make sure the skirts were right length, hair was cut right on men, no one was chewing gum or ever smoking on stage. If she wrote someone up 3 times they were gone! I wonder if she is still living? In Entertainment we could have mustaches and long sideburns and hair could go beyond regular cast members. Entertainment Cast Members had some good perks. We surely all got along. Oh and the food was great. As any Cast Member could get in one of the 3 Cast Member Cafeterias any meal we wanted for only $1 Dollar. 6 months after opening I was one of the founding Union Members. The majority of all Cast Members joined. Due's were low and perks were great. Disneyland Cast Members blew a fuse as they had been trying to get a Union and never could. We were able to get pay raises for hourly cast members and contracts for many avenues that were never possible without a Union. Management in any Division were salary and could never join the Union. It remained strong while I was there. I heard through the years it changed. All I can say is the very first 2 Years were the BEST! How I wish I could connect with those I worked with years ago. Oh I have been on many WDW web sites. Not so easy to navigate. I would recommend anyone applying to work at WDW. In those first 2 years we had 12,000 cast members in all divisions. We had 50,000 daily coming and going. Yes there were some 25,000 days but they were few to the regular attending. After 4+ years in Entertainment Field I went and served my country in the Air Force then worked my way through University and then went into Law Enforcement for 3 Decades. This program for network was filmed in 3+ days, I worked with Julie and Glenn and they were just great and Winters could tell the bluest jokes and have you laughing so much. Hope came in to shoot the scene at the Contemporary Hotel and then left to go back to California. I saw Julie last week on the Late Show w/Stephen Colbert and she was funny and great and still so talented. Glenn has full blown Alzheimer's, What a talent he has been. There are no cures for Alzheimers just a lot of money to be made. :( Warmest Regards, Agent/Officer Thomas (Tommy) A. Porter D.P.O. Med. Ret. A.P.V. 02/20/2017

      Agent/Officer Thomas A. Porter D.P.O. ,
What a great write up, thanks for those rare stories.
My family was lucky enough to attend wdw Grand Opening on 10/25/71 (was my sisters birthday present). I remember tomorrowland only had 4 attractions, and we pretty much finished riding EVERYTHING in about 4 or 5 hours. We attended wdw throughout the 70s well over 50 times (we lived near Tampa), and have since attended close to 500 times.
I cant say how or why, but wdw of the 70s indeed had MUCH MORE Magic than it has now. It just seems now Disney is more focused on cost and profit margins than they are avout quality and guest satisfaction.
I gotta believe Walt would be quite impressed with wdw today, but i also firmly believe he would be extremely disappointed with how his parks are being mismanaged and alot of Walt's beliefs no longer being followed..

Wow can't believe that WDW is nearly fifty years old now, i went there with my family when i was 10 back in the spring of 2004 and it was an one heck of an amazing time. This video here shows how simple the park was when it first opened and boy was it ever so compared to even when i was there that one time, they have continuously added and removed attractions over it's 47 year history.

I remember the Mickey Mouse Review. The first room had a move screen with a film, It was a "voice / sound wave" that would talk to the audience about what they were about to see. I loved the Cinderella part, being I was only five at the time. I miss this show. I would love to see Philharmagic become animatronic like this once was. Disney needs a museum for the things that once were...Mickey Review, the Swan boats, the original Hall of Presidents, old costumes, to name a few. A lot has changed over the years. Re-imagine River Country near Fort Wilderness!

But, in reality the ONLY part I really remember was the scene of Buddy Hackett driving (riding in?) Herbie the Love Bug on the WDW speedway, and even then it was that "spoon in the road" that I remember!

My first trip to Disney World was in the summer of 1994. I was 11 years old. We stayed a week and did everything there was to do at the parks, saw Discovery Island, did all the minigolf courses, a luau at the Polynesian and anything else we could squeeze in. I've been back several times since for briefer stays but man, that first trip was unforgettable. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.
