  • Bought this Seeburg SMC1 Disco Jukebox last week for $150. Of course it did not work for many years. You buy a juke not knowing what it will take to recondition to good working condition. That's why people sell a jukebox. It stops working and not many jukebox repair people left in business. This Seeburg was built 03/06/1979 and looks original which means it needs TLC and some repairs.
I shot this video as a "tour" of my SMC1 Disco Jukebox so if you are not familiar with this specific juke box you will learn basics - how it opens up and plays. I show the insides including the 160 Select-o-Matic Mechanism, SHP3 Amplifier, PCC Control Center, MCU1 Computer, Lighting, etc. Seeburg Jukeboxes are an interesting combination of Electronics, Mechanical Parts, Visuals and of course Music. This Video is NOT made for a SMC1 Disco 'Berg expert.
First inspection showed all fuses are good. All parts are there. The box and glass are great.
The only visible signs of damage were that someone left 3 old C Cell batteries in the MCU1. One battery corroded, the acid dripped down on the PCC, the ballast, the volume control and wiring below. Nasty clean up with baking soda water to neutralize.
Cleaned all the contacts with good contact cleaner & old title strips. Since this one had the motor cover on, it really was cleaner than expected. Just had not been lubricated in forever. Pulled the Mech out - cleaned and oiled to get it playing like it is in the video however a couple internal shafts are still gummed up with 30 years of varnish so the reject / safety is sticking. Need to pull the clutch and degrease everything.
The sound is excellent so the amp is good. However, the volume control contacts need cleaning badly. The stylus is good and the tracking looks fine.
So I own a great looking Seeburg Disco SMC1 which will not select a record. To get it working I need to purchase a $270 Gen 2 MCU computer board from Ron Rich to "replace" the bad MCU1 and there is no "fix". Then I will be able to see what else needs repairing after the computer works again.
Oh, BTW - If you own this Jukebox and want to keep it running, you need to purchase a number of Manuals which are not cheap: The original Seeburg SMC1 service manual from Victory Glass. Also Ron Rich's Seeburg Mech Guide. Also Tony Miller's SHP Amp Guide.

There is one of these on my local Marketplace for £200, seller says it lights up but doesn't play. I am so tempted - love the disco era and everything about it!

I own one of these as well as a 1953 Seeburg HF100G. My original MCU still works.

Not necessarily needs a new computer. I successfully repaired a few one. The main problems are the tri-state buffers and the up/down counters on these. If You repair the old board then You have a functional VFD display instead of blue LEDS and all goes well.... Great machine

A buddy of mine restores Jukeboxes. Normally he looks for the early 60s or older boxes. For the newer ones, they sound great, but not much demand for them. Then, a few months ago a client asked him to find a Seeburg Disco for him. He found it for $200. Looked good, but didn't work. He had to replace a $300 circuit board if I recall, but after that it worked and sold it for $1700. He was happen & the client was happy. So I guess that model is rather popular. See ya -- Atco

I just bought one of these for 125.00. It is still in the back of the truck. I have just a guess at how well it woks. hopefully kinda crappy, it make the project more interesting. There is a lot of rainbow tape glued over everything. Thank for the introduction tour. I hope I can get some video when it is running. I like the smoke refelcting mirror. Mine is covered with rainbow tape. I was thinking it was jut a mirror but the smoke window sowing the mech is outstanding.

Congrats! You got yourself one heck of a beautiful jukebox, Seeburg Disco! Can hardly wait 'til you get it all put together and loaded with Disco records! When you do, I'd love to see your playlist!

I’m gonna get one a guy is selling me for $50.Needs a computer too. I have 2 50s Seeburgs including an R which is the best sounding box from the 50s but even that can’t compete with the sound of an SMC1 with an SHP3 amp in it. I fixed one for a guy last year and that crank. He told me to crank it up and my ears rang after a high volume session with that . Sometimes the R just ain’t loud enough and when you crank it up it doesn’t have as strong a bass as that later jukebox does.

I find them on craigslist. Seeburg Jukboxes are always on ebay so just look to find one that is near by. A jukebox weighs 300 to 400 pounds so find one that is close.

Did you ever have the need to repair or replace the lower 12 inch speakers?

I now have 27 of the SMC juke boxes (I have several of each one made)...The computers are always bad, and frequently the PCC also needs rebuilt....Many people don't care for these boxes, but I liked them when I was a kid, and just decided to start collecting them one day......I'm willing to sell a few of them, if anyone is interested.

They can be fixed. The parts are getting scarce. I did fix one many years ago, not sure what I did but I had fun.
