Thanks man! haha hoping to get more filing practice in and figure out how to film it and it not be a complete snooze. Finished setting the 5 ft simonds today and took it for a test drive. Need to try some fresher less punky wood, but my suspicion is I need to check the rakers for consistency. I filed that saw a little while ago and I've learned more now, so re-visiting it again... and yeah, I have some smaller setters, but I get pretty consistent results with this pair. They are 15" handles, they give me all of the leverage haha

I was going to ask how you like that crappy CC Saw Co hammer then I stopped play when you picked it up and noticed how deformed the head was. Every one of those hammers I've seen has a poorly tempered head. The face of a setting hammer shouldn't be dented by the teeth and rakers it's struck against. Do you back hone your final set? I couldn't zoom in close enough on the teeth to see how you finished them. This is a Simonds 13 like yours set 10/10. Made quite a noodle pile when we were done. th-cam.com/video/WF7oDvrtZFU/w-d-xo.html

Yeah, it is a terrible hammer. I just don't have anything small enough on the face that is also heavy enough, so I'm using it for now haha I need to get a better setting and raker hammer or 2... and I like the #13 it is a nice little saw, yours looks like it was cutting awesome! I'm going to take some set out to .010 I think, I test cut with it and with the taper grind .015 is seeming to be a bit much. The rakers were also pulling whiskers at .012 in some punky White pine. So, I'm gonna try a fresher log or Aspen and see how it goes, but may drop them to .014 ish and re-test. And I do back hone them a little, I feel like it takes the burr off the edge and I get a cleaner edge. My last couple strokes have been back honing with a diamond paddle, pretty light overall. I haven't done that on this saw yet though, I'll touch up the tips a little after adjusting the rakers again and back hone a bit before I take the set back down to .10..
