    Hey guys! Just wanted to say thank you for stopping by, commenting and watching the video! 🙏
    The drums in "Turab" is actually a preset I created in Drumforge Bergstrand, and all the drum mixing is done within the sampler. If you are interested in downloading the preset, go here! bit.ly/2Mzu9Zo

      Hey James! This was an incredible well done comparison, thanks a lot for the efforts! I have to admit that I´d love to see a similar one just with the "not-archetype" plugins, particularly the Cali & the Nameless. I think that those both Neural DSP packages are even a better comparison pair due to the nature of the amps themselves and the nature of the plugins compared to archetypes.
      if you have some spare time left - man, that would be great! :)
      Cheers

    Great demo!
    For me the Gojira and Soldano just slayed the Nolly. Nothing wrong with the Nolly suite but it's just lacking something, and has some fizz as you said.
    Also, very glad you mention that you don't really care how the plugin compares to the real hardware. At the end of the day it's about whether it sounds good. Sure, having things faithfully repro the hardware sound is important, but people put too much weight on that vs actual tone. If it's inspiring and cuts in a mix then who cares. Haha.
    Cheers man

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoy the video! For me, it's hard to say one "slays" the other. The Soldano might sound more real than the Nolly, but at the same time, Nolly offers you 4 amps and cabs, which is the reason why I still think Nolly is better than Soldano for someone who's looking for an all-purpose amp sim.
      It's all about what the individual user wants, which is why it's great that Neural DSP has such a big line-up of awesome amp sims!

    Thanks for the video love the work and time you put into it. It is packed full of info in a plan to understand way so thanks for that. I want to add not sure if you said it in the video but, for ones that don't know even though the SLO-100 only has one cab you can load in custom IR's aka other speaker cabs but, you will have to hunt for good free ones , pay for some or make your own so I do agree it does suck with one right out of the box but, if you own the SLO-100 plugin not all is lost if you find a good IR. I own the Nolly. Sadly did not try the SLO at the same time as the Nolly as my SLO demo ran out before I got the Nolly so I never really knew how they were side by side I think I might pick up the SLO at some point. Thanks again for the video hope to see more videos to come.

    The Soldano seems to have a lot more clarity given the lesser amount of distortion. I bought Gojira and although I really like it, the Soldano seems as if it would have been a better choice for me. Even at lower gain levels the Gojira is obviously just intended to always be brutal. I prefer the warmer tone and the clarity.

    I've been recording my guitar using DI into the Soldano and my JCM2000 into a load box then using the Soldano cab. Have to say I often prefer the DI into the Solando, I just use the default setting and it's ready to go, sound amazing. When you play an A chord and it rings out, it has some lovely harmonics that sizzle in a very satisfying way.

    Something people seem to miss (even though it WAS mentioned in this video)... the Archetype series is its own thing. You can't use the Archetype plugins to compare to a standard amplifier... Archetype plugins are designed to be an accurate representation of not only "the artist's tone" but of their whole personal signal chain. These include their personal custom amps, personal mics they use, specific cabs they have matched to their amps, their preamps, etc. (even their favorite effect pedals and drive pedals).
    The error I think people make is to get these plugins as a general guitar amp VST - I think the best way to approach these plugins is: If you like Nolly Getgood's music and overall tone/sound, get the Archetype: Nolly. If you're a fan of Gojira's music, get the Archetype: Gojira. If you've never even heard of these people, maybe just pass on it, because you're basically buying a SHRINE to an artist you've never heard of!

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are mostly right! However, I do feel that the Archetype series sims and the non-Archetype sims should be treated as the same in the sense that their purpose is the same-to provide good guitar tones.
      I'm not a fan of Nolly's music or Gojira's music, but I find their amp sims to be really great, so I don't think one should skip those amps just because they don't like the name attached to it. To me, it never matters who endorsed a plugin, or whose sound a plugin is based on. The only thing that matters is if it sounds good to my ears :)

    • @auxorion
      @auxorion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamesZhan You know, 7 months ago when I posted this, I had that view based on the marketing and philosophy described by the brand. But 7 months later, I use these plugins as raw material and they sound great in general.. irrespective of who it's modeled after.
      What plugins have you found yourself using the most? (Which ones have stood the test of time for you?)
      I'm amazed by how much I come back to Nolly, no matter the style of music.

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@auxorion These are the amp sims that have stood the test of time for me over a long period of time:
      Pristine, ambient cleans: Archetype Plini
      General purpose high gain rhythm tones: Overloud TH-U's Mesa head and cab, Mercuriall's U530 and Reaxis, and Archetype Nolly
      Rich lead tones: Overloud TH-U's Mesa head and cab, plus Pod Farm's chorus pedal (yup, Pod Farm)
      Often times I would unintentionally favor "newer" amp sims because it's hard to not think "newer is better," but that is really not always the case. At the end of the day, those amp sims I mentioned are always the ones I come back to!

    • @auxorion
      @auxorion 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesZhan Awesome, thanks for sharing. I love the inclusion of Pod Farm lol!

    @redwoodguitarstudio4429 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's been a while since I looked into amp sims, things have changed for the better. The SLO is amazing, so many problems have been solved; no fizz, reacts well, amazing. My question to you as an engineer though, is How do you avoid ear fatigue? Whenever I demo cab sims my ears give up fast. The EQ is all over the place, after a few minutes I can't hear the difference between an amp and a hair dryer.

    • @JamesZhan
      @JamesZhan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right that amp sim technology has gotten better exponentially just in the last 5 years.
      I'm not sure if I have any solid advice regarding ear fatigue-I rarely dial tones in isolation. As a mixing engineer, it's all about dialing in a tone that works well *in the mix*. Perhaps take more frequent breaks and don't just tweak small changes for a prolonged period of time. Think about this-if you stare at something nonstop, your eyes would get fatigued quickly too. It would help to look away at other things.

    They all sound great imo. I've been trying out a couple of Neural DSP trials over the last couple of weeks and I'm struggling trying to find the best one for me. I really want one that can do it all and both Nolly and Soldano seems like they fit the bill, but the amount and quality of the PRESETS in Soldano beat Nolly by far. Whatever you think will work the best for you will be the best! If having a large number of presets is important to you, then go ahead and choose that one.

      The Gojira amp is so much more distorted even when the gain knob is at a pretty moderate position. That being said, it does sound good!

    I wonder is this just the SLO just from the quad cortext? 🤔 if so, awesome idea!

      Apparently it's simulating the newer version of the amp compared to the QC one.

      Hey! In the Neural FB group it was stated that the QC version was modelled after an older Soldano modell and the plugin version was modelled after the current amp version.

      idk what your inspiration actually is, but either way it was so nice to hear that with such great modern mixing :]

      @@gigafuq8751 You are totally right about the 2000's style metalcore. My inspiration is mostly As I Lay Dying. Another commenter actually said he could tell I'm a fan of AILD just from the riffs I wrote hahaha
