I think you were on the right track with your first puller. Always love the "on the spot" ingenuity! Don't forget the benefits of slide hammers in these situations. The sudden inertia impacts from a moving weight can be quite a bit more effective on rusted or galled parts vs. the slow steady pressure of a screw type puller.
Ever thought about using candle wax? Works on rusted fasteners. De-grease it really good, heat the cap out of it and put some candle wax to it. The wax should draw in between the 2 parts and help with removal.
Glad you got it removed. Another possible option would be to cut a deep groove in it with an air saw then heat it up and split it at the groove with a chisel.
I thought about that too, but it was splined, that wouldn't have done much... if it was smooth it would have worked wonders. maybe 4+ cuts and take it out in pieces.
Very true on preventive maintenance, hell... just standard maintenance. Someone neglected that axle (probably the rig as a whole), let the grease dry up (if they even put any in it), let water and dirt get inside, and seized the ring on the axle. I know it's a toy, but damn... Do a little up-keep every now and again. It'll last longer
I hate it when I've worked on a jar for 10min and my 12 year old son comes and twists it off like it was loose. All you hear is you're getting weak and old dad! Lmao
Matt you have a lot of skills I think this part was busting your balls ... When you heat with a cutting torch tip it fans flame out to far :-) use a small brazing tip next time far less fuels used
When in doubt get out the blue tip smoke wrench. If that don't work get out the BFH and beat on it. If that don't work get out your Jeremy tool......works every time.
Take an old steel tool box line it with rock wool add dry sand; this is a tempering box it is used to slow the cooling of steel to harden it. Step #1 heat the box in an oven or with a torch Step #2 heat your part or tool Step #3 berry the part or tool in the hot sand and cover with a layer of rock wool and close the lid. Step #4 allow the hot part to cool slowly over 24houers or as needed. Research proper temperatures and cooling times va type of metal. A harder tool made by hand is better than a drawer full of unused tools.
Saw would have been my first move. It's got me thinking though, what if you had been able to seal some Evaporust in there and let it work the magic- would that have done anything for you?
My question is did you put PB Blaster in there let it saturate for about 2 days or even mix a little Marvel Miracle Oil and PB Blaster together it works wonders you be surprised I've used it to get a seized engine to come apart
your supposed to maintain the vehicle, every time you hit mud or water, when your home, clean & re grease,everything.!!.even check diff oil, motor oil,for water.not rocket science.here in aus.
Try the rusted axle nuts on a 95 XJ. took a week of soaking in PB blaster, heated to the point of liquidation, six foot fence post, broke three breaker bars. Then removed the entire housing and done.
This really reminds me of undoing the front leaf spring bolts on my xj. Well rusted in, it seemed like ages getting them out. Unfortunately I ended up cutting them off and cutting the broken off nuts out of the sockets. Hell of a job. Anyway, just one question....isn't the back side a bit light with that massive engine, winch, bumber and leaf springs in the front? Without the front engaged I think the rear must be slipping pretty much all the time, right? Great video as always, thank you, Martin
It would have come right off if you had removed the snap ring. Instead you forced the part over the snap ring and eventually the metal gave enough and wore out enough to slip off. You can see what is left of the snap ring at the end of the video, it looks like it is in two pieces laying on the inside of the hub.
I am pretty sure what you see laying in two pieces is what is left of his first attempt to take it off that he jerry rigged which came apart in the process of trying to use it. In the very beginning of the video you can see there is no snap ring.
there is no snap ring on there.they do get hard to get out.the splines burr..i have h/d hubs,if there not 100%,aligned,it dont go in or out.ford precision.
Is that a 35 Spline Axle Shaft? I was thinking of 489 Axles with 35 spline shafts. If I did that, would the ring & pinion be the weak link? Akin to a Dana 30 with 27 spline shafts? Where the ring & pinion would break before the shafts?
dont know if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all the latest movies on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my brother for the last couple of weeks =)
Heat something like that then spray with transmission fluid. Heat causes the fluid to draw and inside and loosen the rust. When I put a new exhaust on my Ram Cummins I would drive to work and spray the nuts on the down tube with the transmission fluid then do it again when I got home. After doing that for about three days, the nuts came off like they were put on yesterday.
MAPP gas (in the yellow bottle) puts out way more heat than propane (you will need a different torch that is mad for mapp gas) not as hot as your oxy-acetylene though
Nah he never got the shaft hot enough to affect it much. What little heat he did soak in on the tip of the shaft will wick up the rest of it and dissipate rather quickly. On the other hand im betting the spindle nuts are probably cooked
Brandon Richter I was also talking about the tool arms too but it looks like it didn't hurt it that bad. I don't think I would reuse much of the part anyways being that it was this hard to get off to begin with.
Brandon Richter I'm also thinking about tooling and dies because that's what I do everyday. I'm sure the steel I machine and heat treat is different from what's used in axles and everyday tools.
See in my world the first one comes off easy, then the last one takes days to remove unless I want to spent lots of money on my attitude!! Learned early to walk away when things get too much. At 17 putting in 4spd into my 67 truck and balancing it on a board on the dash ( didn't have floor jack back then, or garage to work in), it slipped down the dash and burst the windshield like sunrise. Was so mad I jerked the board back too fast and took out that small window in the back of the cab. Not fun winter that year. LOL Glad to hear the other side came out easy before you had to leave. Nice to have things checked out and ready to play on the trails.
I have , but I have never taken one out in pieces .. Mine has 4 snap rings in the hub . If you dont pull the back one it wont come out . Hence the question ..
I've personaly used kriol and saw it do what other products could not !!! Working on antique farm equipment with decades of rust build up it has saved me so many times and I have used so many brands and home remedies . although the dollar store use to sell thier brand that did pretty well and was cheap .
i would of made that into a what happens if you dont maintain your rig, vid,.not an embarrasing vid,of a supposed expert, that dont maintain a rig.do not, drive a hot vehicle thru water/mud,.it sucks in everywhere.basic science knowledge.oh yeh,& a bit of light grease/oil,usually helps.stop rust..
You are an inspiration to all us knuckle busters with short fuse tempers. I got mad just watching.
I think you were on the right track with your first puller. Always love the "on the spot" ingenuity! Don't forget the benefits of slide hammers in these situations. Dude you should use map gas to heat stuff up ,propane is for outdoor grills
When little torches just went do, break out the oxy acetylene torches and show that piece who's boss.
Glad you got it removed.
Another possible option would be to cut a deep groove in it with an air saw then heat it up and split it at the groove with a chisel.
I've always done it like that (make cuts, then destroy by any means lol) I was wondering if he needed to save the piece...
I thought about that too, but it was splined, that wouldn't have done much... if it was smooth it would have worked wonders. maybe 4+ cuts and take it out in pieces.
One of my favorite sayings; "if at first you don't succeed, HEAT IT AND BEAT IT!"
John Pike and if that doesn't work, just get a bigger hammer.
Bring the heat! Can't be stuck if it's liquid!
Very true on preventive maintenance, hell... just standard maintenance. Someone neglected that axle (probably the rig as a whole), let the grease dry up (if they even put any in it), let water and dirt get inside, and seized the ring on the axle. This is like when you try to loosen a jar and do all the hard work, then the second guy comes in and pops it off easy
Gareth Dazey HAHA!!
I hate it when I've worked on a jar for 10min and my 12 year old son comes and twists it off like it was loose. All you hear is you're getting weak and old dad! Lmao
“This should only take an hour.” 5 hours later - “why do you hate me 😩😩😤💩🤷♂️😡🤬”. We have all been there😅
Man, I feel your pain. That's something that would happen to me! If it can go wrong it will.
Lol thanks for the advise there at the end Jeremy
Matt you have a lot of skills I think this part was busting your balls ... When you heat with a cutting torch tip it fans flame out to far :-) use a small brazing tip next time far less fuels used
I wish I knew Jeremy was bringing his Jeep up to Pickett. I would love to see that beast in action up there!
Success!!! 👍
Victory kick for the win! Nice vids guys.
It only came off because Jeremy showed up and his awesomeness dripped all over it. 😉😎😍😘😇🤗
Tony Bolton HAHA!!
Bleepin Rose you know it's true... Don't even try to deny it!!!
At least someone came and hammered that butterfly really close. I was hoping for that all the video :D
The world needs more Jeremy's.
Nemo Briceño lolol!!!
When in doubt get out the blue tip smoke wrench. If that don't work get out the BFH and beat on it. If that don't work get out your Jeremy tool......works every time.
Holy shit man I’m glad to see you went above and beyond to win the battle!!! Another stellar video!!!!!
Is that him it is JEREMY to the rescued lol....... awesome videos as always matt
Jeremy stompin in like Godzilla kicking MechaGodzilla's ass.
Glad you guys got that thing off!
Khorsathedark RIGHT!!

I was waiting for a little penetrating oil. I guess you guys are really strong.
Did you try to hit it with your purse?
Why don't you use MAP gas to heat it up?
Your content is awesome! I've been a fan for years
Sometimes it's a 2 man job. Keep it fire red with a rose bud, (while ur buddy J) impacts it off!
That poor posilock! I liked your idea of welding the pipe to it and then attach to that
Saw would have been my first move. It's got me thinking though, what if you had been able to seal some Evaporust in there and let it work the magic- would that have done anything for you?
Don't know
What size tires do you have and what are they
42" tsl
why didnt you just pull diff and hammer it out from inside?
My question is did you put PB Blaster in there let it saturate for about 2 days or even mix a little Marvel Miracle Oil and PB Blaster together it works wonders you be surprised I've used it to get a seized engine to come apart
Yes
your supposed to maintain the vehicle, every time you hit mud or water, when your home, clean & re grease,everything.!!.even check diff oil, motor oil,for water.not rocket science.here in aus.
Did you try throwing a bunch of money at it? Usually works when all else fails! Good ol Benjamin 🤑
Try the rusted axle nuts on a 95 XJ. took a week of soaking in PB blaster, heated to the point of liquidation, six foot fence post, broke three breaker bars. Then removed the entire housing and done.
Did you remove the dodad that keeps it from falling off?
Cheap M&M lockouts do that to me very time.
It was like you lived in NY or something. Rust belt. Good to have that behind you.
I think I learned how to break my tools better, lol
This really reminds me of undoing the front leaf spring bolts on my xj. Well rusted in, it seemed like ages getting them out. Unfortunately I ended up cutting them off and cutting the broken off nuts out of the sockets. Hell of a job.

Great video as always, thank you, Martin
It is light, but that being the case I only have to get the front over an obstacle, the rear follows.
yup, that is true. I guess we'll see an example of that a bit later ;-)
That was crazy how bad that was rusted on ! Hope the bearing hub didn't get hurt
It would have come right off if you had removed the snap ring. Instead you forced the part over the snap ring and eventually the metal gave enough and wore out enough to slip off. Sergeant Zombo - no bro, they already screwed the pooch last time when they attempted to remove it and the snap ring was already pulled under.
BleepinJeep, I was right.

The warn lockouts will always be your fuse.
Precision Landscaping?Is that Jeremy's business?Jerome is a Boss....lol...
When jobs that should take 10 minutes end up taking two hours= its a jeep thing! I love my xj but its guilty of this same behavior.
dont know if anyone cares but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all the latest movies on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my brother for the last couple of weeks =)
@Dakari Odin yea, I have been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
@Dakari Odin yup, been using InstaFlixxer for since november myself :D

Next time you get it half way off and it's that stubborn grind a slot in it than jam a chisel in there to split the rest.
Allen McKinney that's what I was thinking. Get in there with a dremel and a chisel.
Good job!!
Hydraulic locked on. Like when someone doesn’t ever remove there hitch and the rust locks it on
That is Some Michigan level stuck lol
Grats on getting it off
I want to come help with this stuff.
MAPP gas (in the yellow bottle) puts out way more heat than propane (you will need a different torch that is mad for mapp gas)
not as hot as your oxy-acetylene though
All of the hardened steel is now annealed from that much heat and is a hell of a lot softer now I'm sure.
Nah he never got the shaft hot enough to affect it much. What little heat he did soak in on the tip of the shaft will wick up the rest of it and dissipate rather quickly. On the other hand im betting the spindle nuts are probably cooked

How do you stay so calm? Id' be cussing up a storm!
getting mad makes the part even harder to get off.
Should do a mud build
Something like that will drive you crazy for sure... But I had faith that you could do it.....
Id hate to know how long it took for you to get this 13 minutes of film haha
Crazy ass Jeremy
chad harmon HAHA!!
Why was it on there?? Matt is like “did you just ask me why it’s in there?” Lmaoo!!
? carefully saws-all as much as you can then crack it with a hammer and chisel ?
Victory!
what axle is that dana 60 ? I would like to see the insides. I know your rushing for the coming event.
Alan Wheelock The event already happened, he filmed these months ago
Yes it's a d60
Damn it man that was rough as a night in prison. Good job
cant be stuck if its liquid
I had to do that on the side of the trail once, just ended up breaking it into three pieces with a chisel
may be you should do a bit more preventative maintenance, anything hot, when driven thru water, sucks in water.didnt you learn anything at 4x4 school.???
Never...ever..ever..ever..ever...!!! seen a lockout do that
Never seen one do that!
Great video
FREEAKINGG YYYEEEEEAAAHHHHH MEEN!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes...finely dear brother. ..😥
So did you remove the other side or is that set for a later date? LOL
Jim Whitman that's exactly what I was thinkin'. Hahaaa
Other side slid off easy.
See in my world the first one comes off easy, then the last one takes days to remove unless I want to spent lots of money on my attitude!! Learned early to walk away when things get too much. Hell yeah!
Wouldn’t it be better to do it with tire off??
Why?
What exactly is the thing he removed?
Part of the lockout hub.
BleepinJeep anti-seize !!!!
Man.. i'd have lit the rig on fire after all fo that.. Wow.
Did you try penatrateing oil
Nicholas Hollow What's that?
Bleepin Rose pb blaster, wd-40, kroil,
I am going to assume that is the first thing he tried. :P
At the end why didnt you just pull out the screw and put a metal piece at the end
There was a C-Clip at 12:48 on the rear of that gear.. Maybe that should have been removed before trying to take this off ?
I have , but I have never taken one out in pieces .. Mine has 4 snap rings in the hub . If you dont pull the back one it wont come out . Hence the question ..
if you didnt care about the part why didnt you just cut it off? would have saved you a lot of time...
I know i dont have a saw small enough to fit in there to cut it.... maybe with a dremel
Its a Jeep thing..., you understand.
What a pain in the arse...
Deeeezzz jawwwwsss yalllll
FINALLY!!! Hard to sit through...dang it!!! 😡
Does Michael Jackson have your other glove?
use areo kroil best ever penetrating oil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to this guy's test Kroil is the worst. Liquid Wrench is the best. th-cam.com/video/xUEob2oAKVs/w-d-xo.html
I've personaly used kriol and saw it do what other products could not !!! Working on antique farm equipment with decades of rust build up it has saved me so many times and I have used so many brands and home remedies . although the dollar store use to sell thier brand that did pretty well and was cheap .
Holly fack!!
you should have just taken the wheel off, would've been a whole lot easier
Why?
Omg
So when you can't do it call Jeremy eh?
you are a fucking savage
Like pulling teeth!
Frank RangerFrank pulling teeth would have been much easier LOL LOL
1rd
First
i would of made that into a what happens if you dont maintain your rig, vid,.not an embarrasing vid,of a supposed expert, that dont maintain a rig.do not, drive a hot vehicle thru water/mud,.it sucks in everywhere.basic science knowledge.oh yeh,& a bit of light grease/oil,usually helps.stop rust..
