    If I'm not mistaken these guns were proven to be insanely reliable in a 12 hour barrage of fire to buy other troops time, for reasons I am not completely sure of, sometime in ww1. I can't remember specifics beyond that, but I seem to remember that there were 10 teams with hotchkiss machine guns, and a group of soldiers carrying their supplies of extra barrels, ammunition, ECT. The team that was able to shoot the most rounds was to win a prize of some sort.
    Over 1,000,000 rounds of ammunition were fired in that 12 hour period, with the winning team firing 120,000 rounds in that period of time.
    Throughout all 10 teams 10 guns and 1,000,000 rounds being fired continuously, there was ZERO mechanical failures of the guns. I know of NO other small arm in history that has showcased that kind of reliability in a combat environment. If anyone can elaborate further on this please help me fill in the gaps!

      You might want to check out what the British 100th Machine Gun Company did in WW1 (1916 IIRC) using the Vickers (British-built and slightly updated Maxim gun) with 10 Vickers MG's. They used 1 belt (250 rnds) short of 1 million rounds over a 12 hr period with zero stoppages and no issues.

    As a frenchman & collector of the WW1, i did some research about that machine gun. At the beginning of the battle of Verdun, 2 Hotchkiss were positionned in a blauckhoss & stopped the attack on this point , firing no less than 12.000 shots in one day without any incident. The french platoons gave their ammos when they reached the position of the 2 machines guns. Each soldier should carry between 2 or 3 hundreds ammunitions, they left for the position.
    The machine gun was very reliable , but coudnt be used in fast attacks toward trenches.
    Many thx for that video.

    True international gun. Base system - Odkolek M1891 MG - Austrian engineer (Austrian-Slavian), American engineer Hotchkiss upgraded M1891 gun, and produced in France and other countryes.
    In Russia in 1916-1917 based on Hotchkiss projected .50 cal MG, in British 12.7x109SR experimental cartridge. This gun was unbuilt, first Russian automatic* heavy machine gun - P-5 - builted in 1925, but, based on Dreyse MG.13 LMG, in British 12.7x81 Vickers.
    *first non-automatic heavy machine gun, ever built - Gatling-Zagoskin M1869 experimental gun, .60 cal cartridge.

    The heavy MGs in those times had some compromises. Going air-cooled vs. water-cooled means a very heavy barrel with heavy cooling rings. Also, it seems the 30 round strips would allow a moment or two between strips for the barrel to cool off.

  • @romainlapie6362
    @romainlapie6362 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    More than one of the earliest smokeless ammo...it's the first one ! And high command wanted to rush its production to equip the whole French army as quick as possible with that revolutionnary capacity. This gave the Lebel, the first modern rifle. But why rush ? Because the conditions who would gave WW1 30 years later were already in the air (the miracle is that it didn't happened before) and so French military didn't want to be stuck in a rearmement program in a middle of a war. This is why by 1914 its magazine system was obsolete, everybody in Europe had the time to catch up. But remember, French scientist Paul vielle disover the smokeless powder in 1883, by 1885 the perfect bullet is found but General Boulanger gave 6 month to develop the ammo case...and the rest of the rifle ! So they take what they had, the 1885 Kropatchek for 11mm gras (that was going to replace the Gras) and converted it to use 8mm smokelless ammo, 11mm case include !
    So imperfect yes, but the first one, and in really constraignive circumstances !

    Feeding a cloth belt require an assistant gunner too with the coils going in all direction and considering the weight that gun do not have the water jackets{ full of water of course} been air cooled. The overall weight is actually lower compared to the water cooled Maxim types of machine guns and you dont need constantly adding water{water that you have to carry in the trenches with you} to cool the gun. There are pros and cons for the both major types of machine guns from this era.

An awesome demonstration of an under-rated heavy weapon of the Great War and surprisingly well made compared to the m1915 ShoSho. Unlike the Maxims, I wonder if this air-cooled heavy gun could run sustained fire before overheating.

    • @quentintin1
      @quentintin1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it could, but not for as long as the water cooled maxims, it had a heavy barrel and the radiator at the base to absorb and dissipate heat,also the barrel could be swapped relatively easily by pushing a wedge and disengaging the interrupted threads, the barrel can them be pulled off and a fresh one thrown in, but the barrel removing was more for transport than swapping hot barrels, as they were tight and needed a wrench to break them loose

    Excellent installment! That thing is brutal, and your guncrew seems to have a good time as well.
    The Japanese one (the "woodpecker") was practically a Benet-Mercie, but I digress it's all the same system.
    And indeed it was a cumbersome machinegun, and as you said it wasn't the best but it was reliable and it was easy and fast to produce, the production of this and rotation of troops was Marshall Petain's priority on the order of things, and it won them the war, of course with the all in effort of British and lastly a desperate effort by the Americans who poured in thousands of troops (many of whom were ill equipped but shied not from the duty at hand), I must add.
    AZ Guns has an excellent installment on the Benet Mercie btw, I encourage people to watch it if they haven't had enough of these kinds of machine guns (not that we can ever have enough of ANY machine gun).

    The firing rate and sound of this gun is phenomenal. The only thing that i wonder about it the piston under the barrel has a large air gap when not being fired. Might be a hazard with mud or debris getting in there. I have seen footage of the Hotchkiss being fired before. The gun would be fired and when the last cartridge would be fired, the assistant gunner would put his hand on top of the area of the rear sight to block the gunner's view and I assumed it was to let the gunner know the gun was empty. I wondered if it was to ensure the gunner did not pull the trigger again possibly breaking the firing pin?? I saw it on two different scenes so it appeared it might have been something instilled in them at training. Any ideas?

    If we're talking about Star Wars props, most of them are based on WWII German weaponry, not British. The pistol Han Solo uses was based off a Luger, and the Storm-Troopers' rifles were based on MG42s, for example.

    • @monteengel461
      @monteengel461 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong. Han Solo's pistol is based on the Mauser C-96 (Broom handle), not the Luger

      @@monteengel461 Fair enough. Still German though. You kinda come off like a prick, btw.

      The storm troopers were armed with a lot of Sterling SMGs and Lewis guns.

    • @MFKR696

      @@minuteman4199 Indeed, but the SturmTruppen were a small part of Germany's military effort during the war, even when compared to other infantry units.
