When I heard from a friend, that Blizzard was gonna use these kind of songs in the campaign, I thought it was gonna fuck up the game. Wrong.I was wrong...so wrong.
Where I come from, shouting "Freebird" at a concert is a post-modern ironic joke. Yet Dave Alvin has inched into playing it at his gigs, even including a truncated version of it on one of his live albums. It'd great to see that the band did it all the way through, and did it in their own way.
This is actually a rather good rendition. The beat is rather fast and almost sounds like a westernish tune. I wonder if Blizzard had to get Lynyrd Skynyrd's permission for this, or if LS paid em' to add it in.
I dig their version. Very cool and cowboy. The Blasters have been around for a long time and Phil's voice is amazing. Frankly - I like the yodeling - it adds somthing to a tired song that so many bar bands just butcher.
Whats with all the hate comments? Just because you dislike the song doesn't make it bad. I personally like it. That doesn't mean its a 'great' song, but just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's a 'terrible' song. On a side note, I like the Lynyrd Skynyrd version as well. I do like this one more though.
consider this people, this is 500 fucking years in the future, people nowadays play classical music, i mean what would mozart heard his music being played by todays orchestras?? he would shit in his pantaloons!! just keep that in mind
Such a great campaign, hots, not so much. Imagine if they had added the ability to move around in the Hyperion, third person as Jim. And maybe even included some third person shooter combat maybe going on special missions with Tychus both in marine gear and with the graphics of the cut scenes/hyperion scenes basically. With such missions they could have delved deeper into their past as well and the heaven's devils. Would have been neat.
While I can agree with the Campaigns sort of descending. I cannot agree with HotS being "Not so much." Then again, I grew up with SC1. I've been waiting since SC1. When they even announced SC2. I pre ordered and said, "Time to kill that fucker Mengsk."
I cant see a thing jim. well hold on. I swear, it always some damn thing. wait! got it. They go on to explore the wreckage of the battlecruiser, and eventually are in the shadow of an enormous ship. They are then Incinerated by the high tech weapon. (it is not a battlecruiser, they look different and the yamato gun is red, not blue) SC3 should be about trying to destroy that Overpowered ship.
I just listened to the original and I like this one WAY better. The other was too slow. It made me all depressed. This at least has an upbeat, forward feeling to it.
***** Haahaha dude I was just saying the same thing to my friends. They were playing the song and I was like "I like the starcraft version better!" But then they played it all the way thru and I was like "Nvm, the real one has the better solo!"
@Freebyrd1991 I have to admit that when I was flipping through the jukebox and I saw this I was like "Fuck yeah!" but then I realized it was a cover and I was like "WTF!" But I listened to it more and you know what I like this version actually. But I must agree the original Freebird is far superior, that guitar and those drums and that confederate pride, makes me shed a tear.
Sure, it's not as great as the original, but it's still awesome in that cutscene where Raynor is drinking away his sorrows in the cantina, whilst the opening part of this song is playing in the background.
Taken purely as individual songs in their own right, this version is clearly inferior to the original by Lynyrd Skynyrd. However, in the context of Starcraft 2, this more countrified version works really well. I don't think the original would fit as well to be honest. Just watch the cutscene where Jim Raynor is drowning his sorrows in the cantina while the opening chords of this play in the background. It is just perfect.
So tell me what you think of this...Blizzard has billions and billions of dollars. Shouldn't they have just paid to use the Lynrd Skynrd version? It's not like they couldn't afford to secure the rights...
The obligatory Freebird jam at the end is pretty cool, but the rest of it is kinda whatever. Still, nobody listens to Freebird for the parts BEFORE the solo, anyway. ;)

Then I liked " Wow, what a great country-like adaptation ".

A sped up version of this song is in the "I love you, Sarge" cut-scene in Starcraft 1.
I don't think so, there's a very noticeable difference
Nah man, I think that's jem's song th-cam.com/video/_k5YVy2QabQ/w-d-xo.html
This is an awesome cover, The Blasters make the song their own, and it fit perectly in the world of Starcraft.

I'm sure Lynyrd Skynyrd was able to respond right away
I always preferred the Blasters to Skynyrd
Of course they got rights.
Weird seeing my brother's TH-cam comments 12 years later from his abandoned TH-cam channel lmao
I dig their version. Very cool and cowboy. The Blasters have been around for a long time and Phil's voice is amazing. Frankly - I like the yodeling - it adds somthing to a tired song that so many bar bands just butcher.
Damn I wish we got an entire playlist of songs like this.
...oh wait.
It's original and they gave a different feel to it, I love it, personally.
Great cover ^^
Its a very sad and powerful version of Free Bird

I'm still waiting for something relevant with poor ol' Tychus, he made the Heaven's Devils and Devil's Due books great.
why they scrap starcraft ghost
Yes that would be nice, but starcraft is a strategy game, not a First Person shooter (or third person)
I heard there's already a mod for FPS

i prefer this to the real song lol.
Same, I heard this version before the original, and I was like 'oh god take me back pls'
This isn't trying to replicate the original... It is a country cover that has its own originality.
@Not5id Starcraft 2 is kinda like a space western so it fits quite nicely. I dont listen to country myself either.
great cover, beats the song into the game.
It's less than 10 days left until Heart of the Swarm hit the earth... :D
Oh man, Time is so crazy... Now it’s 4 years since it has been released... Time is mad..
9 years since it has been realeased... This is kind of sad

I was quite suprised to find freebird playing when I entered the cantina for the first time.
You my good sir, are not correct.
But you litteraly hit the nail on the head with that comment:)

I would choose Thor
@Not5id I hate country music, but This song was originally Southern Rock so to me it isn't country.
@oasissone I doubt hundreds of years in the future, lightyears away from earth, freebird would remain untouched or unmodified from the original.
