Did a lot of Cove base in 95-97, my uncle gave me a gouge tool that could be adjusted for depth, used pencil to mark corner then ran the gouge tool down pencil line, pre-bent base, we also used hot melt glue, I’ve done it the way you showed here and many times went through face, which was fine using 4’ pieces but when it was a 100’ roll, not good (I still have that gouge, sharpened it a couple times) thanks for the time and effort you put into your videos, totally appreciated

Dude nice video! I've been watching all sorts of other "experts" on how to do it but you showed real actual expertise at your craft. Thanks for helping my project along!
Good video- about like most of us were taught when starting out- the traditional starting point. After doing a few miles of this, I developed a technique of just marking the back of the base, get a good tight fold at that line and cut the line out with one stroke of the knife (As Kyle said- avoid cutting the very top and very bottom) you'll get a feel for the depth very quickly. We used a 4" base knife with the top and bottom tooth cut off and spreading glue on the walls gives much better adhesion and eliminates movement- also important to pull the toe out while pushing down to keep the toe contour matching the straight runs.
Thank you for this. I'm doing a small home project, and I wasn't sure how to handle the corners that I have to wrap the vinyl molding around. Your very detailed instructions are extremely helpful (that hot glue temporary hold is ingenious - I never would have thought of that). You gave me the confidence to know I can come out the other side with a job that will actually look good.
Thank you so much for your tips and tricks. The hot glue gun was a surprise but whatever it takes to make it look good. Glad you mentioned it’s just to help, not to hold. Great video!
Very interesting method! I’m a floorlayer from the UK and what you call cove base we call Sit On skirting, we also use Set In which has a larger foot that gets welded to your vinyl/linoleum. I don’t usually wrap my corners with sit on, I find the foot becomes tight and I don’t like the way it looks. So instead of scoring the back I’d cut down with my blade angled so it sticks out maybe 2 or 3mm. Use scribes to mark the other side furthest from you, and then trim to the piece you’ve already cut
I’ve seen alot of helpers ruin alot of covebase using the knife, using gouge is a time and material saving technique. And the hot glue is the best method for outside corners
Thank you so much for your videos! Is there an advantage to using the 4-foot sections vs a roll? I've never installed cove base before and am worried I won't be able to get all of the unions to look nice. The room I'm working in has long spans (24' x 30').
That's the best way I've found..been doing base for awhile, an dude whose mentioned using heat..works great also but only time I use it is when u get those tiny wrappes like half inch..always found they never stick unless u get handy torch melt it down an cold shock it..an it stays that form..great video man..always enjoy watching your vids..must of both had the same teachers..but I've found few things you have done diff that works better,an I'm sure I could show u couple things that work better also..cheers..
Jeremy Gibson thank you sir, if I see a corner coming up I will make sure that my corner does not fall with just a half inch wrap and if it does I will work that out into the next inside corner, I won’t have just a Half inch wrap, just because they are problematic to get to stick , thank you for your feedback, I enjoy hearing other people’s views
The elevator has just gone up in figuring out why the gaps between the drywall & floor do not need to filled! Its a sealed product! The girls & myself are now leaving for Lowe's (arrgh!), then we'll be back to watch your tutorial again & again till we're ready to try again. BTW, I'm using a chisel to skim moulding for the corners - no upper body strength & an expensive manicure. Thanks!
very nice, I haven't met anyone that like coving, lol, I despise it. I was a boilermaker for 25 years before I did flooring and when using a metal break for fabricating when you make a bend you mark it 1/2 the thickness of the material away, so thats how I always think about it as you was trying to display on the camera. A lot of times in a live office or something I have to take all my measurements and prep my base in another area so I been known to maybe forget what side I meant to cut on, lol. I have used a heat gun to soften the material, and on occasions used the hot glue gun, and even clamps as Thermal 15 said, but have yet to try the torch and water, but have often thought on trying it. I have used preformed corners before, sounds good, but once was enough for me, wont use those again, you know how corners are just about like snow flakes, they are all just a little different and a perfect factory preformed 90 just looks bad. Great job as always.
I always tell the new guys to mark the edge at the corner, and then cut the gap a little short of the width of the base further in the direction you're working. In other words, don't cut the corner like a miter (right at the corner); it should be at the beginning of the new wall (almost like a return). Picture marking the edge with a tiny scribe, and the cut goes between the lines rather than at the corner line. Hinge the base around the corner like two butt joints as opposed to having the cut sit at the 45. Otherwise your corners will not stay tight and will pull apart from the straight pieces on both walls. Also, for about $7, you can get a cove base gouge that takes a lot of the trial and error out of the knife work if you don't have the touch yet! For $3, you can get a spreader nozzle for the adhesive that helps too. I don't know if any of that makes sense in writing, but it sure helps reduce the problems on site!

Is that the traxx 300 watt? What kind of glue sticks do you recommend? I'm in the middle of 1,500 ft w pillars, lots of pillars .This tip is saving me right now, I just need a quality gun.
Almost 12 hours later the moulding is still holding up nicely in the tiny bathroom I did myself w/the dogs watching from inside the bathtub. Roberts base cove adhesive is waterproof, however, for added protection I smoothed more adhesive on both top & bottom edges of moulding for a tight seal to the floor & wall to prevent mold & mildew. Before doing so, I went ahead w/spraying expandable insulation foam in the 1" gaps between the floor & drywall to bond with. In addition, the girls & I became absolutely convinced the gaps needed to be filled to prevent hostile enemies from invading while showering. We believe critters have unknown abilities such as crawling out to open shower doors. The only issue I still have is whether to cut or bend moulding for a 1/2" x 1 1/2" corner between the bathroom door & linen closet door. Any suggestions?

I use a soldering torch. After i pear out the corner i soften the cove with a flame on the back side. Then quickly fold it tight and dip it in a bucket of cold water. The cove retains a perfect 45° that will never peel away.
thermal 15 I have seen people do this on TH-cam and it looks like it does work awesome so by no means am I doubting you I guess everybody just has their own ways of doing things
FloorsbySouthernboys ive only ever done coving once and it was turning into a horror show. I had clamps on my corners and crap pressed up against the wall trying to keep the corner tight till the glue set. I consider myself pretty capable and handy but i was losing badly and starting to feel panicky. I tried the torch and it worked. Hope nobody ever asks me to do it again i agree with y'all coving sucks lol.
thermal 15 when I was 19 there were some fellow installers at the carpet store I was working out of that called me the cove base king LOL, sure didn’t make me like it though I still hate it to this day and I’m fixing to be 41
FloorsbySouthernboys i guess you always had the knack for it. That's why you do it the way it was supposed to be done and i do it the cheater way. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say.
Enjoyed the video and admired your work very much. The only point of clarification I sought was your mention of exactly where the scribe line was placed. From the angle and from your immediate 'correction' of scribe point, I am assuming you went just a hair inside the edge. In other words, not on the edge but just before it. I gave the thumbs up. P.S. I love seeing new stuff. That '3 row' adhesive gun was a wow.
J. Morrison I actually Scribe just passed the corner rather than just to the inside of the corner, the reason for that being Is if you go to the inside of the corner and cut it then when you fold around it will pull a gap from your adjoining end as in this video the right hand side, so you must cut your corner a little I mean just a fraction further than what it actually should be or else it will pull your base when you wrap it , I tried to stress that in the video, good luck and thank you for the compliments
@@FloorsbySouthernboys Gotcha. I forgot that I was looking at bottom view while you were holding it. I tried a few places other than a 'blue' big box store for that nifty '3 row' applicator. all they have is a '6 row' thin bead style one. One other question if I may probe your experience, I'm about to use a vinyl type adhesive from a caulk tube, is that better / same or worse than the canned baseboard adhesive for cabinet bases? When I seen how many tip video's you have, I just had to subscribe. Thanks guys, always cool to see talent share their knowledge.
J. Morrison The Ken Glue you’re talking about is probably a contact cement Which is not a good idea to put on cove base with that it will tear your sheet rock all up whenever you have to remove it, if you don’t have the big caulk gun like I’ve got in this video use the regular size tubes in a regular caulking gun with the cove base adhesive that intended for the cove base. By the way thanks for subbing appreciate it buddy 🤗 and I hope you can get help from these videos

ColoradoAwesomeSauce What did you found my other video where at Duke of base so that’s pretty much all I can do is just to have you watch that has that pretty much explains everything, just don’t doubt yourself and have confidence in what you’re doing, you will be just fine
Use your torch to heat bend in base an a cold wet hand towel to cool the base quickly!! Be careful not to scorch base!! I had a cove base wagon I made to carry base, an opening for adhesive, holder for torch so you don't knock it over!!
It’s specifically for this cove base, it is a cove base gun not a caulking gun and you just buy the disposable nozzles that has three holes in them separately
thanks for your help, I live in california and I have to give a quote and I do not know how to charge for installing it by foot? I am waiting for your prompt response. thanks again
FloorsbySouthernboys a “cove gouge” is the best way to handle outside corners however for home owners only doing this work occasionally doing the back cut is okay since they have time to do it once vs a contractor everyday.

@@FloorsbySouthernboys Hmmm, proper adhesive. I bought a couple of those tips you are using, but they didn't fit. That Lowe's guy is going to get jacked up for this!
Ed McD 😲😂
I'm gonna have to try this hot glue trick!
Thank you for the well done video!
S3raphicReaper Thank you sir, so glad it was able to help you
What brand of knee pads are those? You like em?
www.tools4flooring.com/crain-197-comfort-knees-knee-pads-p-398.html. They’re pretty comfortable but if you’re going to be in this for a lifetime I would definitely recommend pro knees
Omg I hate outside corners!!! That's exactly how I do mine!
Great advise.Thank you
Rocky Blankenship You welcome
Great video!👍
I use a soldering torch. After i pear out the corner i soften the cove with a flame on the back side. Then quickly fold it tight and dip it in a bucket of cold water. The cove retains a perfect 45° that will never peel away.
thermal 15 Ha ha ha that sounds great
thermal 15 I have seen people do this on TH-cam and it looks like it does work awesome so by no means am I doubting you I guess everybody just has their own ways of doing things
By the way thanks for subbing appreciate it buddy 🤗 and I hope you can get help from these videos
great job
j2681 Thank you sir
Very nice! Thank you!
Samuel Minaya Thank you and I hope it helped
Thanks killer job
😀👍
I us a utility knife a torch and super glue ,when you bend the corner it does not show a line on the corner and push down on the toe around the corner been doing 20 years 😎👍🇺🇸
AWESOME TIP!!!!!!!!
Glad you liked it
Today we laid 5 pieces of vinyl. Tomorrow I'm supposed to go by myself and lay the cove base by myself. I'm going to try and mimic this video!! Thanks for making it! Any tips on inside corners? I'm a beginner and need all the help i can get!!!
ColoradoAwesomeSauce What did you found my other video where at Duke of base so that’s pretty much all I can do is just to have you watch that has that pretty much explains everything, just don’t doubt yourself and have confidence in what you’re doing, you will be just fine
Thank you Sr, great video!!👍🏽
JJC You’re welcome
Use your torch to heat bend in base an a cold wet hand towel to cool the base quickly!! Be careful not to scorch base!! I had a cove base wagon I made to carry base, an opening for adhesive, holder for torch so you don't knock it over!!
Very helpful!, Thanks for posting! 😀
Kosta K. Well thank you, I hope it helped
Where do I get a caulking gun like that with the 3 line capacity?
It’s specifically for this cove base, it is a cove base gun not a caulking gun and you just buy the disposable nozzles that has three holes in them separately
thanks for your help, I live in california and I have to give a quote and I do not know how to charge for installing it by foot? I am waiting for your prompt response. thanks again
Laberintos $.65 a linear foot is what I charge for install
75 cent a foot in Cincinnati. California should be higher
How do outside corners that have 3/8 inch thick angle moldings that go floor to ceiling?
Do I remove moulding and put under?
How much did you charge for the office?
I have no idea buddy that was quite some time ago
On those outside corners a gouge makes a perfect cut and much much faster than all that free hand cutting.
2003evodave Thank you, I now have the D cut cove base groover which is very efficient and fast in perfect corners every time
FloorsbySouthernboys a “cove gouge” is the best way to handle outside corners however for home owners only doing this work occasionally doing the back cut is okay since they have time to do it once vs a contractor everyday.
Another great tip.
2:55 never cut the bottom or top edge..it will dry out and split apart with the memory wanting it to pull apart
Kyle Dewar Thank you for your feedback
