Most people associate the Rockman sound with Boston; but, I always associated it with Def Leppard! This is THE Hysteria sound, both cleans and dirt. Was great to hear you do it justice during the intro. Personally, I have been chasing that "silvery" sound for decades. Super excited to pick up one of these!
Glad I ran into you I love this sound and your videos are very nice there's only a few of us that can make video sound this good and you are definitely one of them
I really want one. I’ll probably use it only as a niche tool but seeing as I had an original RockMan in high school it will be like getting an old toy back. Like the six million dollar man action figure.
Just got one. Had the original. And rack unit also. My only complaint is you have to bend over on stage to turn chorus on/off. Im old so there you go. Needs 2 foot switches ok if you're a chair picker tho
I purchased an X100 off of eBay late in 2001. I tried gigging with it the following year, and several things happened. I discovered it was unpredictable in that context, not to mention that I didn’t like how the output from the clean channels was hotter than the output from the distortion or edge channels. From 2002 until post pandemic lockdown, my endeavor has been less to use other gear to duplicate the Rockman tone than to duplicate the tone Tom Scholz arrived at when Boston recorded *Don’t Look Back.* That tone was more consistent than on the *Boston* debut while being just as raw. Though I’m sticking with my ambition to approximate the Boston guitar tone on other equipment, I can still imagine this version by MXR is capable of making good on what I’ve written; it appears to have more hands-on controllability than the Tom Scholz original(s). Re “Purple Rain”, I suspect that the Rickenbacker Wendy Melvoin played her part on is a short scale. That makes some kind of difference to trying to play that part on a guitar with standard Fender or Gibson scale.
Always a fan of Jim's reviews. Just ordered mine from you guys. Pete Thorn also has a very well done review of this pedal. My application will be much like Jim's here, going into an amp, but Pete's review is more recording, DAW related.
I learned to play guitar on the old Rockman and so loved it. When I quit playing at that time and then some years later I couldn't find one and thought what am I to do now. Anyway, needless to say I got past that situation, but that there is a Rockman pedal out. hey, that might work. Great video!!
Great playing, esp. in the Intro and the clean stuff. Thanks for playing through an amp and not directly into the DAW. Though I suppose 99% of the 80s rockman guitars were recorded direct.
Piano's N'Stuff is currently SOLD OUT of these right now . But don't fret , I was told they should have a new batch by February'ish . Also if you open the pedal up there is a MONO/STEREO switch . The reason the "echo" effect was not included on this version is because the original part for that effect no longer exist . I wish I lived closer to Pittsburgh so I could visit Piano's N Stuff . Great store ! March Madness is right around the corner , do they still have that sale ?
We do indeed! You can take advantage of our March Madness Sale online too. Just reach out via our chat, and we can hook you up with the same great prices we do in person!
Basically the sound of a cranked Plexi with a 57 to the board with chorus and delay I mean man this is the sound I can't believe that they can just drop it into a pedal like that
Love the sounds especially how you're making them stand alone you talking about the mix I'm not sure that I want you to jump into like a Pete Thorn type of thing just I like what's going on
I run it's type of sound Direct and I take the microphone that I'm speaking through and use it to kind of record some of the electric guitar Blended in with the direct signal
Ok, good…the skinny on Reddit was that this was going to just be a pedal which made absolutely no sense to me. The magic of those Rockman units was in that DI, plug and play, instant sweet guitar tone.
The only thing that annoys the hell outta me about these Rockman videos is when the speaker says Schults instead of Scholz. There's no T in his last name!
If the pedalboard is still able to accommodate... you can add an EQ Pedal after it.. But I get that... adding a tone pot shouldn't be a big deal for MXR.. even a tiny tone Pot will do it...
@@sergeyv4908 that's affecting the tone's change too much (Global Tone)... I think, he @rjrguitar only wants to tame that specific Rockman's tone only...
this pedal needs too many other things to complete its mission. 1-noise gate, 2-reverb, 3-delay, 4-trs+tap switch box, and some one NOT playing 80s songs. i predict them to cost about $150 on reverb by the end of the year. the younger generation isnt aware of what it does, and the genX and baby boomers either wont pay over $200 or are just too old to utilize it. a great idea that came out too late.
Horrible job MXR did, no top jacks and used sliders really geez what a joke. The control jack on the side is also another joke most modern pedals have 2nd footswitches to save room on your pedalboards.
@@totrodder97 I get that but what a waste of space when they could have added other added controls. Putting a CNTL Jack on the side when the could have added a 2nd footswitch which they have a lot of room for a 2nd footswitch instead of using the CNTL Jack

Boston are WAY better than def leppard and is right to give Tom Scholz all the credits for this pedal and sound
This is the first demo of it that I’ve heard that sounds good into the front end of an amp, nicely done.
Awesome playing (and review), thanks for posting!
MXR has done it again! Amazing pedal! I can't wait to get one!
I had the rack mount version back in the late 80s and it was one of a kind and super versatile. Tom Scholtz is a genius!
Great demo Jim! You know I love my 80's sounds!!!
Great demo video! Love the song references…they’re great examples. Looks like I’m gonna have to get the old Rockman out
Mine's in the mail right now! Thank you Flipside Music !
Aren’t they not even in stock yet?
I love you MXR ❤

Had the 6 million dollar man back in the 70's along with a Stretch Armstrong and an Atari 2600.
@@tuberocker69 No way! Me too. I loved the Atari and for Steve Austin I had the rejuvenation chamber. What a dork I was!
@@tuberocker69I got a atari myself. Specifically the sears home arcade model. Still works but haven't used it in a bit.

Just ordered mine, should have it in a couple weeks!
Awesome pedal and demo.
@4:30 This D chord is very reminiscent of the intro to "Why Worry" from Dire Straits 1985 LP "Brothers In Arms" 🎸 Talk about your 80s flashbacks 😎👍🏼
Kickass Demo
Wow that’s about time!!

Sounds nothing like any Plexi tone I’ve ever heard. That nasal midrange has more in common with Brian May’s Vox tone.
Do I see two mics on 2 amps? Have Mike up near your mouth I can do it this nice but I have to have my headphones on or turn my amps way down
I have seen over 11 videos in my feed for this product. Are they giving them away?

There's so many attempts to grab Tom's sound of the ICONIC original X-100. boy this one sounds very close ! I'll have to get one to find out !
It’s Def Leopard day on all these videos
George used it on under lock and key
Not Eliminator. The X100 was released after Eliminator came out. It was used on Afterburner.
Is the case metal or plastic?
Metal For sure..
Who is your friend? I need to get my x100 restored. 👍🎸
Are you listening and running the chorus in Stereo very important
i wish i had one.....sigh...maybe one day....
I run it's type of sound Direct and I take the microphone that I'm speaking through and use it to kind of record some of the electric guitar Blended in with the direct signal
is it all digital?
Analog, Tom Scholz hates digital.
I thought he was gonna play Lets Get Rocked from Def Leppard 😊
Where is the delay ? That was the best thing about the x100.
i want this and the peavey decade too lol
Now I know this is the Gateway to Tom Sholz and Def Leopard but I was hearing ZZ undertones throughout everything that had hair on it.
Sharp dressed man territory 👍
It sounds like Joe Satriani might have used some Rockman gear on Surfing With the Alien.
I think he did actually

TOM SCHOLZ: Please do an interview with Rick Beato. I and many others are dying to know about the Hyperspace unit😅

The rockman x100 that this is based on used sliders (super 80s) so theyre paying homage to that
