Love this topic! I always wonder about this too. I thoroughly felt your pain in the muddy rocky situation. It is very common in the Northeast. When I wheeled in Moab it felt like cheating.
On point topic considering Toyotas choice not to use front lockers on the trailhunter nor landcruiser. You'll have to do a comparison of front locker vs sway bar disconnect.
Two different tools. I wheeled my 4runner for many years on IFS. It was normal to have a wheel 2-3’ in the air. Obviously, a locker was needed. Now, with SAS, I’m going thru areas that I would have tires in the air and all 4 are on the ground and I’m walking thru unlocked. Unfortunately, the wet weather didn’t help you. You should do a revisit update when dry.
I think we will definitely be revisiting this test! I definitely found when I had a lot more flex I used the lockers less, but yeah, you still need lockers for anything serious. However, the other benefit of more articulation (to a point) is having a much more stable vehicle. Things can get pretty tippy when only 2 wheels have good traction.
I wheeled a TG sas'd hilux surf with the tv rear leaf kit opened diffed for years, and it worked really well on 35's compared to ifs on 35's. No comparison, really, and never broke after that.
You put a lot of stress on the vehicle suspension if you don’t use lockers. Easy to break stuff. You need momentum to keep while you can go slow with lockers
Great video man! Not a fail at all. It’s just PNW trails changing daily and by the hour! Challenge accepted! Lol BTW what rear spring pack is in that truck? Complete aftermarket pack or an add-a-leaf setup? Cheers!
I think we might have to revisit this subject later on with more consistent weather and a better obstacle. It's a full aftermarket leaf pack from Deaver!
It's very true, just did this same obstacle in the rain this weekend in my 88 4runner that doesn't even have sliders, no problems. It is sas'd on 37s and twin lockers though, so the bigger tires probably helped get over that rock.
“The stuff been under my bed for too long”. Uhhh I know that feelin🫠. Still haven’t installed my Dobinson MMR’s, sliders, and steel bumper. Been sitting on them for an embarrassing amount of time.😐
I think you need more contrast and saturation lol
Yeah this looks horrible
Very washed out. No perceivable white or black points.

I think we are going to have to revisit this topic again without such a tight timeline and on a few different obstacles
Definitely. I think tire pressures were a bit high day 2 also
The off road gods were definitely fighting you all the way on this one but kudos for not giving up
We may have to revisit this subject!!!
This poor guy is being guided by Patrick The Starfish
the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma
I can hear the theme song in my head 😅

great idea!
great video. wheeling: yes, some testing: yes, shock relocation: yes, but not having music in you videos: no no no. lol. its all good

Love the vid guys! Local to the Fraser valley 🤘🇨🇦 was really hard to see cus of the contrast n shiz
A shock relocation kit has me intrigued...

Seems like a comparatively cheap winch is better than a lot of other mods for that one obstacle you need to, not want to, get over
The winch is the safety line, but when the goal is to get over an obstacle clean, using the winch is cheating!
Hahaha, good times! 👍
Thanks for sharing the knowledge and trials.

This is why 1st gens are the best get for wheeling. Frame is considerably lower on the later gens.

Somehow we have a situation, that truck had no chance on that second rock,
Nice vid! new JD sliders next 😜
That definitely would have helped!!
This is why i love my 2011 offroad with a rear locker and atrac. Atrac is awesome, pretty much a poor mans front locker 👍🏼
How does full droop (articulated) affect the extension or more severe angle of the driveshaft and-or u-joints ?
The Good ole eagle
Not a taco fan but I love y'all's videos.
Awesome video guys
Is this eagle hard way or easy?
Lockers, always lockers if you want to do real rock crawling
It would have been good to see another vehicle get through.
you guys should invest in a plasma cutter
We have two; a plasma cutter and a CNC plasma table
Hell yeah dude!
Haha! Nice!
Kinda difficult spotting from the side...............just saying
what rock sliders are those?

Sounds like it's time to get on it!!
Put MRR's on our truck second year and I love em!
