I feel like not all of these songs are actually problematic. Like, obviously the lyrics in themselves are toxic, but a lot of these are just telling a story. Stalker or Psycho or Monster are (too me obviously) not meant literally but are telling a piece of fiction. Like movies about killers or whatever are not meant to encourage you to kill. Love & Hate too. Reading the lyrics put in this video, I believe the relationship between the couple has drifted and they are slowly hating each other. A story about a falling relationship, basically but the title says toxic as well so I think they can be included but it's not creepy like majority of the other songs Edit: nvm. There's just too much to explain 😅 And that's exactly what makes this song even more real, they are FIGHTING with their instincts. If you look at the lyrics I think that love isn't even the main theme. And the order of what's happening in the song is a bit different, they see the human as a prey first but then gain feelings. It's probably the first time they're this close to a human so there's an internal conflict of feelings and instincts that they are trying to fight with. I'm not saying you have to like it or sth but this song is actually super accurate if you want to describe what a creature would feel falling for a human for the first time. That's why I also don't know how you can find a song that refers to a fairytale problematic (Korean title is "The wolf and the beauty"). That's how you can actually shift attention from the songs and lyrics that ARE problematic and need to be discussed to just mocking lyrics you don't find nice for the sake of good laugh. Unconsciously we can do more harm than we think. About fairytales, their whole album XOXO that features Wolf refers to different fairytales, they are just good at making those references subtle. Like I said there's so much to this concept that if you're not looking deep into it many things won't make sense to you. Gonnna be honest, some of these lyrics shouldn't be put with others. Some are straight ass sexist or slut shaming women while others are just some expressive lyrics about betrayels and lies and other stuff in a relationship. I agree. Songs aren’t always going to make you happy rather it can be uncomfortable at times especially to set a message. For example, Agust D “what do you think?” (Although controversial) I think it’s brings a great perspective that artist should not be solely held hostage to topics such as positive ones like self love or happiness, sometimes we need to be reminded of these things in order to grow. But then again, everybody knows that bts aren't the type of people to own up to their mistakes in a shallow and mediocre way. If they changed the lyrics but still performed the song it still would be controversial, knowing what the song originally meant. They apologized, went to universities and talked with professors about misogyny, women empowerment, etc. Later in their career they even made a song that's centered on women empowerment. I obviously can't speak for them but i look at it this way; BTS has never performed War of Hormone again, never talked about it, never promoted it, and they openly admitted that they were in the wrong, apologized for it and owed up to their responsibilities. Think of their whole career as art and growth, those mistakes were a part of them, changing them would oppose the beauty of the process. They acknowledged the mistakes they made and they didn't change anything about the past, knowing that it was a part of the art and growth that they are having. Again, at the end of the day, what's important is that they learned from it, and are currently one of the most unproblematic artists, not only in Korea but also all over the world.
All I want to say is that lyrics can be an expression of art and context is definitely important. Monster, Psycho and Sweet Lies are songs that portray a message and kpop doesn't have to be all happy and rainbows. Kpop idols are allowed to sing about toxic messages like toxic relationships or toxic beauty standards. Sweet Lies are lyrics through the eyes of a cheater, which is still an expression of art and I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. The Exo members are not romanticizing their lyrics, but actually calling them out. Like I said: context.
sweet lies is actually a song showcasing a relationship with a deceiving partner and how things happened faster and worse than they had intended. it portrays the urge to hold on to something already collapsing. a mentally abusive relationship that can't be ended easily when faced realities.
No matter how toxic and problematic it sounds, every female has related to Nice Body by Hyomin at least once in their life. There was at least one time when you wanted to lose weight, to diet, or when you felt insecure of your weight or body shape, even if its because of the judgemental society.
I think there are way to talk about this kind of topics (topics that should be talked about in songs, stories and everywhere), and the way that songs speaks is NOT. people look up to you and you're telling them to "count the calories, go through the pain so you're going to be pretty" just no.

A lot of these I feel- to me, that they aren't problematic, because the core of songwriting/singing/rapping is telling a story. And it's not love stories all the time, some of these songs show the bad stuff that happens in realtionships. But again, songs like war of the hormone, and JYP's whos your mama is uterrly dissappointing because they basically tell woman that they aren't enough. And and that one twice lyric about becoming a real man, that is toxic masculity, which is dissappointing since a lot of onces are male. I saw one day a very interesting tweet about War of Hormone, i don't remember all of it but it said that the most important thing to know about this song is the context and the slice of life it tries to convey : i do agree that the lyrics alone are really problematic, and when i first saw it i was trully surprised because i believe BTS aren't this kind of artists. But the tweet was explaining that this song represents the mindset of a young teenage boy wondering about dating, sex, and more. That is why those lyrics are so harsh in a way, because it is exagerated, it's almost a parody (as a lot of BTS songs) of a certain type of songs and attitude. For instance, out of all the BTS members in the video, the girl chooses Taehyung/V at the very end (when she gives him a hug) and he is precisely the one that was the less insisting and rude toward her throughout the whole MV. Now, i do know that Namjoon himself has apologized for this song's lyrics and have throught about it a lot (doing research, going to see the right people to know how insulting some of this content could have been to women for instance...), but i believe the context (and meaning) was important to remind. Anyway i know that some people might still be offended by those lyrics and i am not minimizing at all their feelings, but i thought it would be interesting to share what I remembered from that tweet :)

Not trying to sound biased but the Monsta X song can actually be quite meaningful for people who have been through or are in toxic relationships. And trust me it's not that easy to just leave a relationship, especially if you are still in love. Even if a person is crappy you could be crazily in love with them, love really has no reason, it just happens. And you really need support to get out of it. Although it is technically cheating on your toxic partner, it's still important and healing for yourself, and to finally move out of the toxic relationship.

I mean, they can be taken wrong. It’s not as if what they’re singing about is objectively bad, but the framing, tone, and context. I’ll use cheer up for example, it’s for the most part a harmless song about a flimsy romance. But certain parts paint a picture of a relationship that lacks severe communication (the whole “I won’t tell you what I feel or reply, to keep you hanging on a thread”), and also kind of perpetuates toxic masculinity (that one part where they’re basically saying “man up and deal with it, even if you’re confused and hurt, you shouldn’t feel anything or care at all”.) Like you can still like the song, and I’m sure most can tell this isn’t exactly a healthy relationship you should model yours after, but you should be mindful of the message. Most of the songs here are like this, objectively aren’t bad, you just shouldn’t internalize anything they say, or take them seriously. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying them though

I don’t agree with Cheer Up, Monster by EXO, Monster by Henry, and Stalker. Monster by EXO is literally talking ABOUT toxic relationships and abuse and manipulation. Cheer Up is just a girl falling in love for the first time and having a dilemma because she doesn’t want to give her heart away and then be thrown away by the guy because he’s a jerk and only sees her as an object and moved too fast, Monster by Henry isn’t problematic because it could just be referencing how he broke her heart and regrets it (I doubt it was physical abuse) and Stalker is about sasaeng fans. But don’t get me started on No More Perfume- PS: the English version of Henry’s Monster isn’t problematic at all either. Actually it seems like the GIRL is toxic. “But every time you kiss me and Tell me pretty lies about your history I’m so tired of the back and forth” In the KOREAN version (shown here), Literally the line JUST BEFORE the lyrics shown in its video was: “I knew too late, only when you were hurting” makes me think it was something like neglecting her because he was too busy or smth. So if a boy group came up with a concept similar to yes or yes, people would be more triggered because girls in real life actually struggle with boys that keep on insisting on them after they say no, while it can happen to boys, it's more common for girls to be harassed that way. I feel like not all of these songs are actually problematic. Like, obviously the lyrics in themselves are toxic, but a lot of these are just telling a story. Stalker or Psycho or Monster are (too me obviously) not meant literally but are telling a piece of fiction. Like movies about killers or whatever are not meant to encourage you to kill. And that's exactly what makes this song even more real, they are FIGHTING with their instincts. If you look at the lyrics I think that love isn't even the main theme. And the order of what's happening in the song is a bit different, they see the human as a prey first but then gain feelings. It's probably the first time they're this close to a human so there's an internal conflict of feelings and instincts that they are trying to fight with. I'm not saying you have to like it or sth but this song is actually super accurate if you want to describe what a creature would feel falling for a human for the first time. That's why I also don't know how you can find a song that refers to a fairytale problematic (Korean title is "The wolf and the beauty"). That's how you can actually shift attention from the songs and lyrics that ARE problematic and need to be discussed to just mocking lyrics you don't find nice for the sake of good laugh. Unconsciously we can do more harm than we think.
About fairytales, their whole album XOXO that features Wolf refers to different fairytales, they are just good at making those references subtle.

For example, Agust D “what do you think?” (Although controversial) I think it’s brings a great perspective that artist should not be solely held hostage to topics such as positive ones like self love or happiness, sometimes we need to be reminded of these things in order to grow. But then again, everybody knows that bts aren't the type of people to own up to their mistakes in a shallow and mediocre way. If they changed the lyrics but still performed the song it still would be controversial, knowing what the song originally meant. They apologized, went to universities and talked with professors about misogyny, women empowerment, etc. Later in their career they even made a song that's centered on women empowerment. I obviously can't speak for them but i look at it this way; BTS has never performed War of Hormone again, never talked about it, never promoted it, and they openly admitted that they were in the wrong, apologized for it and owed up to their responsibilities. All I want to say is that lyrics can be an expression of art and context is definitely important. Monster, Psycho and Sweet Lies are songs that portray a message and kpop doesn't have to be all happy and rainbows. Kpop idols are allowed to sing about toxic messages like toxic relationships or toxic beauty standards. Sweet Lies are lyrics through the eyes of a cheater, which is still an expression of art and I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. The Exo members are not romanticizing their lyrics, but actually calling them out. Like I said: context.

A lot of these I feel- to me, that they aren't problematic, because the core of songwriting/singing/rapping is telling a story. And it's not love stories all the time, some of these songs show the bad stuff that happens in realtionships.

I saw one day a very interesting tweet about War of Hormone, i don't remember all of it but it said that the most important thing to know about this song is the context and the slice of life it tries to convey : i do agree that the lyrics alone are really problematic, and when i first saw it i was trully surprised because i believe BTS aren't this kind of artists. But the tweet was explaining that this song represents the mindset of a young teenage boy wondering about dating, sex, and more. That is why those lyrics are so harsh in a way, because it is exagerated, it's almost a parody (as a lot of BTS songs) of a certain type of songs and attitude. For instance, out of all the BTS members in the video, the girl chooses Taehyung/V at the very end (when she gives him a hug) and he is precisely the one that was the less insisting and rude toward her throughout the whole MV.
Now, i do know that Namjoon himself has apologized for this song's lyrics and have throught about it a lot (doing research, going to see the right people to know how insulting some of this content could have been to women for instance...), but i believe the context (and meaning) was important to remind.
Anyway i know that some people might still be offended by those lyrics and i am not minimizing at all their feelings, but i thought it would be interesting to share what I remembered from that tweet :)

Not trying to sound biased but the Monsta X song can actually be quite meaningful for people who have been through or are in toxic relationships. And trust me it's not that easy to just leave a relationship, especially if you are still in love. Even if a person is crappy you could be crazily in love with them, love really has no reason, it just happens. And you really need support to get out of it. Although it is technically cheating on your toxic partner, it's still important and healing for yourself, and to finally move out of the toxic relationship.

I mean, they can be taken wrong. It’s not as if what they’re singing about is objectively bad, but the framing, tone, and context. I’ll use cheer up for example, it’s for the most part a harmless song about a flimsy romance.
But certain parts paint a picture of a relationship that lacks severe communication (the whole “I won’t tell you what I feel or reply, to keep you hanging on a thread”), and also kind of perpetuates toxic masculinity (that one part where they’re basically saying “man up and deal with it, even if you’re confused and hurt, you shouldn’t feel anything or care at all”.)
Like you can still like the song, and I’m sure most can tell this isn’t exactly a healthy relationship you should model yours after, but you should be mindful of the message.
Most of the songs here are like this, objectively aren’t bad, you just shouldn’t internalize anything they say, or take them seriously. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying them though

I don’t agree with Cheer Up, Monster by EXO, Monster by Henry, and Stalker. Monster by EXO is literally talking ABOUT toxic relationships and abuse and manipulation.
