Hey there, I'm a Southie guy with 20 years in, starting in Rozzy Secure DYS, then Walpole and various fed joints. You're hitting my two great loves, Boston history and Crime history. I was in Walpole for years with the son of one of the Campbell's, Al, good dude. Youre probably the first person I've seen who's telling the other side of Boston Crime history. I'm loving it.
I’m from Springfield but lived all around Boston for like 10 years and been in and out of several facilities crime history and just history alone I love also
Thank you for posting this. I was born n raised in Boston. My mother was a part of that great migration from the south. She (n my father) relocated from Memphis in the early 60’s. She worked at Boston Police Headquarters n later Charles St Jail. Pretty sure she ran into some of the people you talked about, just on the other side. I am obsessed with mob stories as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about our neighborhoods back in the day. I must say you were spot on with locations, n street names. I remember the old South End n how we saturated it in the 70’s. There were private discussions in our homes “not to sell”. Unfortunately a lot of families did. I watched the city rebuild The South End practically brick by brick. We lived on Symphony Road, early 70’s. I was only 9. I witnessed things that no child should ever see at such a young age. Overall I am very proud of the strides we have overcome as a city. The racial lines seemed to have disappeared and the millennials n generation Z are coming together. People who relocate here have no idea the tension we lived through back in the day.
Wow thank you very much I really appreciate that 🙏🙏thank you for sharing you personal experience that is amazing. It’s nice to know from someone who’s lived it that I was accurate about what I was saying obviously I didn’t grow up in Roxbury or the south end. I’m sad that the city had become so expensive but I do agree that it a positive change how much the neighborhood have mixed racially. Thanks for taking the time to comment it’s appreciated 🙏🙏
@@jasontrimmins8264Definitely a new sub 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️….Please dig deeper n post more stories. We want to hear n chime in. There were more “crime families” in our neighborhoods. They ruled the 80’s with “The ladies of the night” n the crack epidemic.
Yeah I'm obsessed with mob history too I can pretty much tell you anything about any gangster in any state east coast or west coast and down south I'm from Baltimore and my father n uncle's was used as inspiration for a lot of the characters on the HBO hit show "the wire" they pretty much infamous gangsters who was known for their pistol game and growing up around all this shit always had me drawn to the street so it was only natural I became a gangster too I put in my work my name is known til this day I also did my prison time for a lot of the work I put in I made history and I started studying mob history I never looked back I started with John Gotti and bumpy Johnson and ended up studying every gangster in America Russia London Italy amd france
Jason I was employed in LE for 41 years 1970-2012 working throughout the City of Boston. Just want to compliment you on your well-researched documentaries. An excellent episode on Black Gangsters. Often overlooked with a lot of historical references to the Irish and Italian gangsters.
The historical racism of not just Boston, but in America mainly Irish against Black, was greatly downplayed at key points, otherwise pretty factual and succinct.
@@jasontrimmins8264 the depth of the rest of the information given outside of that cultural history led me to believe those stories would be detailed in the future, in depth. No worries, pointed it for a possible confirmation. Much appreciated... Excellent content... another New found eager Subscriber to the platform. Keep em coming 🙏🏾
Oh ok. So he would have known all types of people through out the community. I’ll look into him. I’d like to do more historical stuff possibly non gangster related about Roxbury and Black Boston
@@jasontrimmins8264A lot of platforms in different regions leave out the black history which I just call American history but when you actually go there the history is always interesting and impactful to that area and certain people want to write the black fingerprint out of the books. Then I try to imagine the world without black culture. I certainly would be boring to say the least 🙏🏾 respect
My late mother grew up in the same neighborhood as your grandfather. She once mentioned that he and his brothers, George and Norman were Merchant Seamen/Marines. I truly enjoyed listening to stories my mother shared about her younger years. She recently passed away at age 92, as a self-proclaimed family historian and history buff, I owe it all to her.
I read John Martorano autobiography, so immediately when I saw the title black gangsters of Boston, I knew Immediately you were talking about the Campbell Brothers, I'm a history Junkie too, just subscribed 👍🏾 💯

I can’t explain to you how grateful I am for this video. I’m always looking for stories on old Boston crime and I always get the same things ,like you said. I really this appreciate this one
I hate when I leave the state and people ask “they have black people in Boston?!”. Like really?!? You watch Celtics games and think Boston is majority white?! 😂😂 Boston is one of the most diverse cities in the US! I’ve met people from Iraq to Brazil To Morocco and so many other countries!
Every player from Boston told us they hate it and it’s not diverse. Voted most racist fans for decades lol you clearly not black so seeing a coupe black people throws you into its a lot.
Lived in Boston several times between 2012 and 2020. Loved it especially during the summer. It's funny people still think of the busing riots of 1974 when they think of Boston.
The algorithms brought your channel to me. I enjoyed the video. Love your accent. You're informative the Black migration is awesome. Late 20's my family left Virginia and came to Scotch Plains NJ 25 miles from NYC. My great aunt was strong Black woman and she brought her sisters and brothers there. She never had children but she brought young Black women and worked in the garment district. Story has it she and her sister pulled out on Italian bootleggers. Auntie had a store and bought houses. I remember as a 5 year old I was in awe of her. Great channel. 👍🏿
Wow that’s an awesome story thank you for sharing🙏 I’m glad the algorithm brought you here! My absolute very favorite part of doing this is when people share personal stories like this. God bless your auntie and people like her!!🙏

WOW!! So happy that I ran across your channel. Since the time I was a teenager, I've been obsessed with mob and gangster stories. I had no idea my people had a mob presence in Boston of all places
My family was part of the great immigration to Boston, Mt Vernon, NY and White Plains, NY. In my neighborhood of Roxbury, all the families looked after the children. We owned our homes and looked after each other. People left their back doors unlocked!!!
Thank you for your comment it’s much appreciated 🙏 What a much simpler time I wish the world had more of sense of community then it does now. Thank you for sharing you history have a great day!
I’m 60, the Campbells were my fathers friend. Everything u mentioned is true. Arnold lived across the street from me on Radcliffe Street for awhile. I played w his kid or kids. My father was very close to thier relative Ozzie. Thanks for sharing
Your love of history resonates throughout this video. I don't even know where to start but those Campbell bros were bad mother -f's. Peruvian marching powder i love it. Best video to date Jason. 40 minutes which flew by like 4 mins. Really well done. Enjoy yet another rainy weekend. Keep em coming and thank you.
Thanks Tim!! Those Campbells were definitely some bad mofos. I would have loved to been alive then and go see Stevie Wonder or James Brown at the Sugar Shack. I try to find funny code words to not offend TH-cam🤣 I could talk history all day thank goodness for TH-cam because no one in my life likes to listen to my history lessons 🤣🤣 have a great weekend Tim 🙏🙏
Good history thanks. I was driving cab in Norwood in the spring of 1981 and 3 or 4 times a week a black couple with young son would get off the bus from forest hills and I would drive them to their apartment at norwest woods in Norwood. The wife, who was pregnant was very friendly, her name was Joy and her husband Alvin, the son Alvin jr. is now incarcerated for rape. Joy was a nice lady, I visited her in the hospital when she had the twins, sad she was killed tragically.
This is awesome! I'm born and raised in Boston and I didn't know this about Black gangsters. You educated me! Definitely subscribes to your channel. I love history and I learned something. Thank you!
Dorchester, South End, Roxbury… my neighborhood since ‘72. I love it! I tried Brockton, didn’t care for it too much. I ended up back in Roxbury. My parents migrated from the South, Georgia and N. Carolina to S. End.
That’s awesome thanks for the comment much appreciated! I appreciate the first hand perspective. I think it’s a big part of history that that not a lot has been done on it.
I really enjoyed this documentary. My landlord is a old school player and came up with all these people. He told me stories about the sugar shack... When I first moved to Boston I wanted to work on Newbury street and couldn't get a job as a stylist... He sat me down and told me don't worry baby that street is where all of the ladies-of-the-night used to live it's a dump it's always has been a dump LOL.
This was a good piece of history.. Im from Dorchester, Codman Square specifically.. my mother's family is from South Carolina and moved to Warren Gardens in the late 60's then to a home on C Road in the 70's.. my father's family is from Jamaica and moved to Erie St in the early 80's then Havelock St in the late 80's and ran that Woodrow Area.. it'd be great if we had more BLACK Boston history available to showcase to the country/ world. People dont know that Boston is minority-majority city and after you cross Mass Ave theres not that many white people around.
I agree that’s why I made the video there really isn’t a whole lot out there and that’s not fair. I’d love to do more videos about Black Boston. I mean that video is really just scratching the surface. Thank you for taking the time to comment I really appreciate it.
So true I grew up in the south end Lenox st but I’m from academy Holmes the dark side and your so right after mass ave not to many white folk I can’t forget far East and supreme pizza on the ave
Remember my days over ther my hood had beef with warren garden at that time they were affiliated with Mission Hill not to far from Dudley station which is Nubian station now
Outstanding piece. I’m a child born in the early 69’s remembering hearing the stories of the Sugar Shack. I also later met Billy Bass the original bass player of the funkadelics who talked about performing in the Sugar Shack when the group formed. Funny how life comes full circle and good to know who the petty criminals fell under.
Awesome thank you so much for the comment much appreciated 🙏 that’s awesome you met the bassist for p funk. I wish I could’ve been alive to go there and see some shows. I’m definitely born in the wrong time as far as music goes.
I knew Arnold and his younger brother “Soupy”, and their sister Dotty. They treated me kindly as I was in trouble with the law as a young teenager and they had changed their lives and helped many young people like myself. The Sugar Shack was located on Boylston Street not far from the area known as the Combat Zone. Roxbury was vastly different then, there’s hardly anything that would remind anyone of that period of time except a few old heads like myself who grew up there.
Soupy that’s cool you can’t find that in any books. I love hearing from people who have first hand knowledge. Thanks for watching and commenting have a great day 🙏🙏
Southie native here, just found this channel for the first time. Interesting, can’t wait to see what else you have. I lived in Southie when whitey was still around. Met him a few times, he bought me chips. I miss the old neighborhood.
Hey Jason, I'm from Detroit.. Scott is actually right about Murder Row.. it was the clicks that came afterwards, like YBI, Pony Down, Best Friends, Davis Fam, and Monster Squad that weren't dealing with the Detroit mob..
Hey man thank you for that super thanks that was very kind🙏 Yeah that’s why I’m the video I said he could be right because I’m not that well versed in the Detroit underworld, but he was definitely wrong about the Campbells working for Whitey. Awesome Roxbury stories. I grew up in Roxbury and really appreciate how you touch on black Boston history. Very important. Did you know that houses on Beacon hill were only $1 to purchase back in the early to mid 1900’s? Also did you know Boston started out as a very small tiny piece of land smaller than a block right on the water at the Marriott vacation club pulse at custom house Boston? I encourage you to take a trip downtown to that hotel for they will give you a historical presentation tour of our rich soil. It was actually mind blowing.
Wow thank you very much for that informative comment. I didn’t know that at all about the houses on Beacon hill. A lot of Boston was marsh and swampland that was filled in to create more livable spaces. I’ll check out the hotel history tour love history. Thank you again have a great week🙏
Good video thanks. My ears perked up when you mentioned Swedes in Boston. My great grandfather was a Swedish immigrant who settled in Boston. My grandfather was an ironworker who moved to Brooklyn because New York had more work.
I’ve never heard of Swedish people-or any Scandinavian group-having a crime racket or an insular neighborhood group in Boston or the wider USA. The existence or non-existence of such a thing would be significant for historians: just because I’ve never heard of such a thing isn’t proof of non-existence. Theories about who does what and who did what would be affected by such information-
Im from Worcesta...born and bred. Sometimes proud...sometimes not so much. I started watchin this and as soon as I heard ROXBURY it woke me up and sent me right back to my childhood. Watchin the 5:00 News on Chnl 5 with Chet and Nat. Waitin to see what the Weatha was gonna be tmrw. And a lot of the time they had a story about the Blacks in Roxbury. You’re very welcome 🙏 I don’t know if I’d call it a complete history but I did my best. Think it was a culture shock for some of the college kids that wandered into Roxbury
From David A. Wood: I thank you very much for exhibiting this very entertaining Organized Crime documentary about Boston's African-American (Black) underworld. Mind you, my expression of serious gratitude is not merely coming your way just because the historical city of Boston is still one of my favorite American metropolises. Getting back to the subject at hand, usually when Boston's colorful, late 20th Century gangster culture is discussed in documentaries of this nature, the more noteworthy and ethnically Irish and Italian portions of that city's active underworld are always discussed instead. This is even though the city of Boston has always had an established Black American community that has existed since the 18th Century, and as such, there was also a notoriously active Organized Criminal subculture that has fully operated, and still does in the present day, within the larger African-American community, a community that is still located in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood.
Thank you kindly sir🙏🙏 I appreciate your comment and agree the city’s Italian and Irish gangsters get way more coverage than the city’s Black gangsters that get basically zero coverage. Especially from an organized crime perspective it’s only ever street gangs that are discussed.
I liked it, You brought back a lot of fun memories. The Campbell brothers and Johnny Mortorano were close. Now there way a lot of things that you got that was wrong such as personal relationships. Johnny and Howie we would all sit down and gamble after the shacked closed. The owner of the shack was Rudy he also had a club un Miami. I was a part of the Cleveland crew.
What relationships did I have wrong just curious? I never said Howie and Johnny weren’t close they were basically best friends. Kind of confused by that but I bet you have some awesome stories . I’m interested in Cleveland not a lot about their underworld out there, but I know it was active.
Thanks for an excellent video and i appreciate the research that you do. So if the Campbell brothers knew Martorano does that mean that they knew Steve Flemmi and the other Winter hill mobsters? Have a great weekend Jason.
They met Whitey in Federal prison while they were both doing sentences for bank robbery. Deke Chandler was a childhood friend of Flemmi’s he would’ve known the Campbells but didn’t have any dealings with them. Other than Martorano they would’ve have dealt with Winter Hill

Yo, this is pretty good, you should do some research on Cool Carl Robinson born in 1923 his father is Christopher Robinson, the first black man to run in the Boston Marathon, and one of the first families to move into the JP Projects on Heath St. and Parker. Cool Carl had 21 kids 17 boys and 4 girls. In the mid 1940’s Cool Carl bought a Cab medallion and started running for the Italians in the northend. He(Cool Carl) was pass for white light black and that got him into the Northend and Southies Irish mafia. Cool Carl had all the gangsters and politicians even the heads of families from Boston to New York and Chicago feared the original “Ghost” he just recently passed away at the age of 96yrs old. He had numerous aliases but when you heard Ghost or Casper that was like mentioning the Grim Reaper himself. Oh and let’s not forget “He had never been pinched” Yes even the police feared this man and his son’s. The JP Robinsons. Cool Carl ran them projects from the mid 1940’s till early 2000’s. It was tragic how the family got taken out of the streets but nothin last forever. Fact
Are cool Carl and Ghost the same person?? Other people have mentioned him I’d love to investigate that! Great comment very informative and interesting. Greatly appreciated 🙏🙏

What a drama queen

Really interesting! Thanks for covering this.
Thank you for the nice comment I’m glad you enjoyed it!!!🙏🙏
moved to boston (JP) in 2003 at 6 years old. good times to be in the city during the 2000s. hasn't been the same since 2015
I feel you on that the last 10 years has been such a dramatic shift. It’s all about money unbridled greed. I appreciate the comment 🙏🙏 I though it was the Alex Castro I went to high school with at first but I realized your like 20 years younger 🤣
@@jasontrimmins8264 lol, all good bro. i feel like since 2015 the city lost its niche, since mayor menino died the city got very gentrified and yuppied up. doesn't feel the same anymore. you should do a video on the history of combat zone, fenway park, newbury st, and other tourist attractions. not just hood stuff. keep the great vids coming
@@AlexCastro1 good ideas🙏🙏 and I agree with your statement about mayor Menino. Have a great day!
wow, i’m from mattapan & never knew this. thank you for sharing!
Well thank you very much I appreciate the comment have a great week hope you keep watching my channel
Enjoyed your documentary. Loved the Hollywood actors for effects with making your points such as...
Fred Williamson "Black Caesar"
Harvey Kietel and
Robert DeNiro "Taxi driver"
Wood Harris "The Wire"
Good job! Thanks for the memories by including pics of old Roxbury.
Thank you for noticing those pictures and complimenting me! Most people have been giving me a hard time you know you have actors in your video instead of the actual people? I’m like yes of course I do I did it on purpose for dramatic effect and because the characters in the movie fit the profile of the people I was discussing. So thank you very much your one of the first people to understand and compliment me so thank very very much 🙏🙏

Let me know if you'll be doing one on a Boston Bootlegger and Racketeer by the name of Charles Solomon (aka) "King Solomon". He was during the prohibition era.

Milton used to be part of Mattapan but they broke off after the riots that tore up all of Blue Hill Ave after MLK was killed
I didn’t know that very interesting I have a Jamaican friend who lives in Milton used to bring me 🔥 jerk chicken from some spot there!
@@jasontrimmins8264 yep that tracks I am from Montserrat I grew up in Mattapan live there from 1973 - 1990 when they called it Murderpan. There are a lot of people from the West Indies particularly Jamaica Antigua Montserrat Barbados back in those times. A old head told me the story about how Milton broke off if you look into it I think it was sometime mid-late 70s. Again great job my brother I've been watching all your videos good stuff #3forthestripes

You don't have brothers like that no more the black man from the 1960s and 50s was strong Brothers Brothers today diluted great videos salute to the brothers in Boston from the 1960 👍💯
Thank man glad you enjoyed it🙏🙏 I agree times were much different
Sure you do. The brothers have moved on to being middle and -class . Why would you want to be a gangster when you could that type money in investing and business. I have already done this.
Thank you 💯
None of this was honorable then or now why is that so hard for you to get. Sound stupld

Well done I’m from glocksbury Academy Holmes to be exact and it real life out here it’s not a game well done homie
Thank you for the compliment much appreciated 🙏🙏 hey can you help me out not sure how old you are but do you remember which sports teams /starter jackets the difference projects /hoods wore in the late 80’s early 90’s?
@jasontrimmins8264 Vamp Hill(Geneva/Bowdoin st) wore LA Kings hat, Columbia Point Dawgs also wore LA Kings hat( later years changed to Pirtes and Phily hats), Mission Hill projects wore Michigan Wolverines hat, Franklin Field Projects wore San Jose Sharks Hats, Intervalle Posse wore Miami Heat, Heat street projects also wore Miami Heat hats, Castlegate Rd wore Red Sox hat, Academy Homes wore Atlanta Brave hats, Hundbolt Ave wore Raiders, Magnolia St wore Steelers hat, Four Corners wore Pirates, Corbet st wore Boston Bruins, Franklin Hill projects wore NY Giants hat, Orchard Park projects wore Portland Trailblazer hats, Greenwood st wore Greenbay Packers hat...
There's more to name but those mention already were the major ones in the 80', 90'...I came up in that era and it was imperative to know who's who and what not to wear especially if you had smoke in the streets lol ...Great work btw!
@@nhatube2thanks my man for compliment and that incredibly informative comment!! People don’t realize how important it was to jot wear the wrong teams apparel in the wrong neighborhood. I’ve wanted to do a video on it since I started but I only knew a couple like the obvious OP Trailblazers and Columbia point Dawgs. There’s nothing written about it. Very much appreciated 🙏🙏 Thank You
@jasontrimmins8264 my pleasure, keep up the good work and don't hesitate to hmu for insight regarding the subject and or the era in general. I tuned in to to your chanel when you dropped the video about the NOB and long standing Cape Verdean gang warfare in the city...I was what one could call one of the founding members of the original Wendover crew, was in the midst and lived through the painful and tragic beginning of what essentially turned out to be a literal civil war amongst not only lifelong childhood friends but also family members...
@@nhatube2 damn man I could tell just from the way you talk that you have a lot of first hand knowledge, but to hear that!! That’s something I want to dive into the beginning of that situation a lot more in depth . There’s nothing out there about it a couple chapters in books is about it. I barely glossed over it in that video. I appreciate you sharing you experience with me it’s greatly appreciated 🙏🙏 I’m going to be working on a video about 1991 the most deadly year in Boston history so the sports teams and which hood or project they associate with will be important for that. I’ll reach out I’m sure with questions for that and in the future when I do the history of Cape Verdean conflict I would love to talk to you. Thank you again very much !!🙏🙏
Hell of a job. If you do any videos on the North End etc. I would suggest looking into Rick Costa his story is interesting. Salute
Thank you very much I appreciate the compliment. Real tricking talking about those guys even though he’s in prison for life people might not like me talking about that stuff. I got called into the North End last month and was spoken to.
BIG Up🙋🏻♀
Thank you kindly MrsPlanetMaster🙏🙏
Where did you get the photo at 1:29?
I’d have to see the specific picture on the video but all my pictures are free downloads off Google
I was raised in Massachusetts. Your documentary is fascinating. I had only heard of the Irish mob. Given the state of the country, I doubt this history will make it into school curriculums.
Thank you very much I appreciate your comment very much. I agree they don’t teach any of this stuff in school. If you enjoyed this I’m working on a video about Malcolm X’s life before the ministry which a lot of centered around Roxbury. They definitely don’t talk enough about him in history class that’s for sure. Thank you again!! 🙏
It will as long as we expose the information to the younger generation

Thank you so much! I’m a biracial woman from Boston. My mom, being Italian from the north end, and my father being a black man from the south, but in late 50s settled in Roxbury.
Awesome thank you so much for the comment and sharing your story much appreciated. You’re a great example of what Boston’s all about have a great day!
@@jasontrimmins8264 Thank you, I will continue to be a person that supports your content. I must say my mothers, Italian family disowned her and told her to leave the north end and never come back after they found out, she was with a black man. So I have no connection to my Italian family from Boston,Although I would like to. Take care and continue the great work.
@@Indigoglo1111 thank you so much for your kind words. That sucks about your mother’s family and how you don’t have a connection with the Italian side of your family. But unfortunately that’s what a lot of people’s mind sets were back then. My grandmother got mad at my dad for marrying an Irish girl instead of a Greek. Anyway have a great day and thank you again😊

I went to Boston in August and got a tour of Beacon hill, the guy pointed put John Kerry's place and said he saw him the past week.
I also visited the African Meetinh house, it's such a beautiful urban enclave

I really liked seeing the shot of the Sugar Shack with "The Ambitions" on the marquee. Larry Woo R.I.P.

You have to be from Boston? You did a great job with with this video unearthing these facts and information. My father was a pimp and playa in Bostons underworld knew the Cambell brother's and John Monterano. I met Monterano multiple times as a kid in and around Boston bars. My father would go pick up money and I'd sit at the bar drinking Shirley Temples and Monterano would rub my head and say "How's it going kid?" I had no clue he was a serial killa?!
That’s awesome! Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. That’s a crazy story thanks for sharing it. I bet Martorano was nice most people say you would’ve never known by meeting him he was a killer. It just rubs me the wrong way that he basically got off for over 20 murders. But that’s an awesome story thanks for commenting have a great day!
@@jasontrimmins8264 Monterano was always nice to me when I saw him and he would tease my father asking him "what would a beautiful woman like this want with a guy like you?" in regards to my mother and would wink at her. Let's say this about Monterano, for a guy who was a stone cold killer he didn't carry himself that way always a gentleman!
