People need to accept that highnotes ain't everything. You may be good at the upper range but suck at everything else. Look at Ariana Grande, she kills every highnote but the minute she's not in the upper range, she falls flat. Zayn may be good at highnotes but with everything else like control, range, skills, technique, support......Liam has it all. Liam is 1D's best vocalists but people only rank Zayn first because of highnotes. If it did then singers like Beyoncé would be classified as terrible vocalists😂 Mariah Carey would have been dominating even if she regressed alot. In conclusion, Liam is overall the best vocalist in 1D. More control, range, better technique, the whole package. Zayn comes in second. Voice doesn't account for good singing. It just means you have a good tone and with that, you can hide imperfections. An example is Jimin from BTS. He has the best tone but the worst singing skills in the group. Liam may not have a good tone like Zayn but he is a better vocalist overall
People in the comment section are so uninformed. It's stupid to say that Liam is worse than Zayn because he can't go high like Zayn. Liam is a baritone while Zayn is a tenor. Tenor will ALWAYS sound better than a baritone in higher register because his voice is lighter. Instead of high notes people should focus more on their voices, technique and timbre because saying who has a better high notes it's pointless when they both have totally different vocal types.

Liam slays every song, I mean without him (Daddy Direction) what is 1D now? He is really good at singing, he can beatbox and more, his voice is a very gifted voice tbh, even though he only have one kidney during his teen years. Zayn's voice is deep and high, like in the Best Song Ever, You & I and many more, but I think he just keeps up with his high voice. Liam on the other side, have a straight (idk what word that is) voice, and it can go higher and deeper and a mixture of high and deep, he have a special voice. He also harmonizes with Louis, Niall, Harry or maybe even Zayn, Zayn on the other side harmonizes only in a few times. Liam for the win

His first audition obviously needed work, so in two years time, he received a standing ovation in 2010. "Critics" at that time gave him 4 "Yes", and the rest is history. In the first album, he led 13 of 15 tracks and for obvious reasons. Liam is well rounded. 2017 will see the best of Liam because of his debut album and the versatility he will bring to the table. After the first album, Liam voice was to harmonize or sing the bass with the other boys and for that reason his voice is better. It's easier to write 'harmonize' than to actually do so, and Liam does that well in Live performances. For this reason, he can easily work with other artists of many different genres. In addition, he is EASILY compared to Justin Timberlake and other "mature" artists. Zayn is great in higher octaves yet he is mainly a front man. His appearance must always be on point and the media always report his activities, but not so with Liam. 2017 will be great because both artists will be releasing solo albums!
both are really good singers honestly. In my opinion, they are the best in one direction. Liam is underrated but his vocal range is excellent. No strains, really sounds like the studio version when singing live. Low notes + strong, full voice + excellent control + technique is spot-on! 👍🏻 Zayn is widely known for his high notes. Honestly think he's the best when it comes to it (no hate but Harry screams, Liam can't really get in his level but they are both good in their own way). Vocally, I like zayn more because I find him pleasing to listen to but can improve more. Strong voice + high notes 👌🏻 I feel like I didn't really do justice with this comment. I'm gonna go with Liam for this battle. not too long ago, i saw an updated chart of vocal ranges of all the boys and Liams was the largest, although that doesn't necessarily make him better. I feel that his voice is way more versatile, but that's my opinion. also, when people immediately shout Zayn to this argument, they mainly take account to his studio and rare live high notes. although his high notes are nice, think about their live performances. Zayn doesn't always match his studio vocal abilities live, while Liam can. also, in the topic of harmonies, Liam can harmonize with anyone in the band, Zayn doesn't typically fit. In the choruses of the band's songs, Zayn is typically matching with lead or falling behind in the background. Liam, on the other hand, when not doing leading vocals, you can easily distinguish his harmonies with leading.
also, speaking performance wise, Liam is more of a showman than Zayn. Zayn is a lot more shy and he doesn't take that many risks like Liam would. Look at his solo live performances. He's like a singing statue alot of the time.

Zayn is better for me, I love Liam's voice but his high notes when are not falsetto, many sounds a little bit strained and too much forced, Zayn's voice has "that thing" and personality and it's very natural, I like his low notes too (not as much as Liam' low notes), don't sound so forced.An example is you and I, in the band just Zayn (I don't how to say in techinique words) could use his chest(?) voice and quickly goes to falsetto, in high notes.Liam's tequinique is better, but Zayn voice is better, is more powerful, in low notes I am still can get over Liam, I just really love him. ***** Very well said. There's a reason Liam is made to consistently perform falsettos in the studio versions; that is because I am highly doubtful others are able to do it as well as he. Zayn did a falsetto in one of his acoustic versions recently, I think? But it wasn't as refined, to me. Liam is definitely discounted on belts in the recorded versions and those have usually been distributed to Harry and Zayn, however, his true natural prowess comes through when you hear him live. As Nick's already mentioned, Liam's voice is the most alluring to me because that dude knows how to make shit sound flawless. His breath control is better, too. Not to mention how he seamlessly switches from falsettos to harmonies to melodies. One of my very many favourite distinct bits was when he covers Louis' verse in Teenage Dirtbag and then moves on to his solo. Yeah, I am very positive the other four would struggle with something like that.
zayns highnotes are like heaven, but overall liam is a WAY better singer. He does note changes all the time which makes it more intresting to listen to him. Because he sings with a baritones resonance instead of a tenors. And then on top of that he pushes his chest constantly so it just sounds monotonous and a bit odd on his solo songs. But in one direction where the song key was in a bari-tenor range, his voice kinda fit in really well

Both of them are great! Zayn has a very cool and unique timbre to his voice and a very agile voice. Liam has very good technique, control and has a soothing, warm timbre. I would say Liam tho, bc he can sing a F5 with such power as a BARITONE! That’s really impressive!

All these Zayn's stans trying to hate on Liam because Zayn can hit high notes. I don't know if many of y'all have seen the LIVE performances, but Zayn's notes almost never sounds like they do in the recorded singles, whilst Liam delivers the same in studio and out. Liam is just so underrated and it's frustrating. Not because he doesn't get enough solos, because he does as he is generally used to carry the songs, but no one acknowledges how vocally impressive he is. Not only is he able to sound DIFFERENT in the songs- as he has covered MJ, and Maroon Five and been able to go from pop to rnb and much more- (which is something that I often see Zayn struggle with ex:same sometimes lazy rnb tone in their bubble gum pop songs.) but he harmonizes well and has great control over his voice. While Zayn often strains his voice, Liam doesn't. Yes, his upper register could use a little work and he needs to be more confident when hitting higher notes, but Liam's lower register is beautiful and it's not as fabulous as high notes, but just as impressive in my opinion. Zayn is amazing, but I do feel like Liam is a better vocalist with better live vocal performances, versatility, and control over his voice. Let me say Zayn is great before y'all come attacking me for not agreeing with your opinion, I just feel that Liam is better. UPDATE: I see Liam has been taking some of Zayn's part's now that he is gone and you should give it a listen because Liam sounds just as good if not better than Zayn in the songs.
He's not. Zayn is not one of the best vocalist just because he can do highnotes. Highnotes don't define a person's singing skills. Zayn legit sounds completely different or "off" whenever he does highnotes live cause he strains the life out of him. Everytime he does a highnote, his neck veins bulges so much to the point it looks like he just screaming or in a rock band. Zayn may have better upper range skills but Liam is not far behind. Liam is literally better in everything else. Bigger range, better technique, control, stability, versatility..everything. Liam is 1D's best vocalist. He's the only one that sound decent for Xfactor. Zayn is better. Zayn supports more and strains less than Liam. Zayn has issues with jaw and neck tension, but overall still supports more belts and falsetto than Liam. A good example is when Liam tried to take on Zayn's You and I high note. Zayn was able to hit it, but when Liam tried he sounded very trained and that's basically because he was just screaming. Zayn's belts are also more supported (and resonant up to bb4 i believe), Liam's belts are weaker and not as supported. When it comes down to it, range is important as it shows potential, but ultimately SUPPORTED range is what matters and I am pretty sure than Zayn has a more supported range than Liam. Liam's range is higher than Zayn's just because he strained to hit those notes - and that's why he doesn't sound that good to other peoples ears.
Liam is a better technical singer. Zayn's breathing technique is improper and, especially live, it takes a lot away from his performance. They are both incredible vocalists but Z has a lot he could work on.
"Pretty sure" Well, Liam actually has the better technique. Zayn's belts are mostly strained, he makes it very easy to tell. You can *see* the tension in his neck, the veins are even sticking out. Zayn just has a more "pop" voice, because he really puts emphasis on mouthy technique. He sings more from his mouth than anywhere else.
Zayn is a tenor, Liam is a baritone, they have different voices. Zayn has a softer so his high notes will always sound better. The you and I note, I think it's unfair to judge Liam on because he hardly had time to practice before he had to perform it live, he was forced Into reaching that note when he hadn't trained his voice up to it yet. Also being a baritone, it was never going to sound as nice and fluid like zayns did because of their vocal types. Liam has way more control over his voice since the start of 1D, probably because he had working on his voice years before 1D was formed. He experiments with his voice on stage, does note changes and riffs onstage perfectly with control. Zayn however does strain his voice, which you can see from the severe neck veins that are evident. Just because somebody can hit a high note, doesn't make them the best singer out there.

My teacher considered me a lyrical baritone, but by the 5th year of the institute I caught a resonance point and took out a bass tone ... My highest falsetto note is D5. But once, out of stupidity, I got out F5, then I did not know the boundaries of the ranges of voices and vocal technique and tried to get the highest note that my vocal cords can get)))
Both are my fave vocalists in 1D and are extremely talented, but: Liam: has a smooth, sexier tone and can sing lower notes. Zayn: has a smokier, effortlessly sexy tone and can hit higher notes. I’ve watched countless live performances and they both kill it. I wish Liam did more singing in his solo work, then the comparison would be more accurate. Some of these clips had other vocals mixed in and we know they had to maintain a certain sound in the group that often didn’t show their true vocal range.

Its not just about hitting a note, most of Liams higher notes where ones where he did the "whooos" to get the audience goin, technically not singing. I am not saying Liam cant reach these notes 🙌 Lets take the You n I high note for example, Zayn does it mixed voice, then effortless transition to head voice (high note) Whereas Liam does it falsetto, then head voice (high note) Try both their techniques on ur own right now, Zayns one is wayy harder, its almost impossible to some, that transition he does is sooo effortless for Zayn on the other hand Liam just does it in falsetto , then the high note which is way easier
Zayn stans are so biased, just because he has more of a showy voice, doesn't mean he's a better singer than Liam technically speaking. Liam sounds just as beautiful live as he does in the studio version while Zayn does not; that's what it comes down to. Also, Zayn strains his voice way too much sometimes while Liam rarely misses a note.
Zayn's tone and timbre is much better than Liam's. Yes, Liam is the better technical singer and has a wider range, but I just find his tone and timbre to be bland and generic, unless he's covering another artist's song and he's imitating their voice a little bit. Sometimes it's not about the notes one can hit, tone and timbre (tone color) play a major role, because best believe if Liam and Zayn had the same voice as far as tone and timbre go, Liam would be the best singer, hands down.
+Docbndgrl9113 that's funny because Zayn stans will almost always only contest his high notes as key while emphasizing his vocal abilities. To be honest, I actually prefer Liam's timbre more. It's more sturdy, imo. Zayn sounds very repetitive in terms of his vocal prowess as opposed to Liam who brings in that element of versatility. And every solo of Zayn that Liam has covered this past year was quite unique and very distinctive so I don't even know where the question of him imitating the original singers has come from. Be it MJ's covers or Rihanna's, Liam has constantly showcased credibility.

Liam: Technique Lower range Falsetto Harmonization Pretty much sounds like the studio version 👌 For me what really stands out for Liam is his Falsetto...its just mesmerizing and really soothing. Zayn: Higher range Transition in his vocals (mainly from chest to Head) Perfect key Mixed register Chest tone For me what really stands out for Zayn is his tonality and high notes. But Im no expert so whatever my opinion matters🥱😑

Technically Liam has a better voice n have great control but his voice misses individuality like when u here chorus u will not get his voice although his voice provides a base to the chorus... I know this comment is old, but I just have to correct you. You can barely recognize Liam's voice in choruses because he was almost always doing the harmony. Liam was only the base of the chorus for four songs: Change Your Ticket, Fireproof (the first chorus), History, and Best Song Ever. Zayn, Harry, and Louis were typically the bases. Zayn having a stronger voice doesn't necessarily make him better. Also, Zayn can hit higher notes than Liam, but his range isn't as wide as Liam's.
Why should this be a battle? They're totally different singers with different voices.... Zayn has a great technique, and does a major impact on the band's sound because of his belts and high notes.....but so do anyone else, especially Liam...Liam is totally underrated, he can nail the lower register and has a decent falsetto range(but Zayn has a better control of it). But what I'm super amazed by Liam is that he can harmonize with anyone in the band(like Niall but not as much as Liam). He can nail those low and high harmonies really easy without any effort. And believe me, harmonising with someone is just as hard as being the lead, and that's something to be proud of. Overall, Zayn won in terms of his range and great execution, but Liam won in terms of skill and musicality. Sure Zayn has that musicality, but he's more gifted with his range. While Liam has great musicality and will continue to improve. That's all.

He is really good at singing, he can beatbox and more, his voice is a very gifted voice tbh, even though he only have one kidney during his teen years. Zayn's voice is deep and high, like in the Best Song Ever, You & I and many more, but I think he just keeps up with his high voice. Liam on the other side, have a straight (idk what word that is) voice, and it can go higher and deeper and a mixture of high and deep, he have a special voice. He also harmonizes with Louis, Niall, Harry or maybe even Zayn, Zayn on the other side harmonizes only in a few times. Liam for the win

It's easier to write 'harmonize' than to actually do so, and Liam does that well in Live performances. For this reason, he can easily work with other artists of many different genres. In addition, he is EASILY compared to Justin Timberlake and other "mature" artists. Zayn is great in higher octaves yet he is mainly a front man. His appearance must always be on point and the media always report his activities, but not so with Liam. 2017 will be great because both artists will be releasing solo albums!

I'm gonna go with Liam for this battle. not too long ago, i saw an updated chart of vocal ranges of all the boys and Liams was the largest, although that doesn't necessarily make him better. I feel that his voice is way more versatile, but that's my opinion. also, when people immediately shout Zayn to this argument, they mainly take account to his studio and rare live high notes. although his high notes are nice, think about their live performances. Zayn doesn't always match his studio vocal abilities live, while Liam can. also, in the topic of harmonies, Liam can harmonize with anyone in the band, Zayn doesn't typically fit. In the choruses of the band's songs, Zayn is typically matching with lead or falling behind in the background. Liam, on the other hand, when not doing leading vocals, you can easily distinguish his harmonies with leading.
also, speaking performance wise, Liam is more of a showman than Zayn. Zayn is a lot more shy and he doesn't take that many risks like Liam would. Look at his solo live performances. He's like a singing statue alot of the time.

Zayn is better for me, I love Liam's voice but his high notes when are not falsetto, many sounds a little bit strained and too much forced, Zayn's voice has "that thing" and personality and it's very natural, I like his low notes too (not as much as Liam' low notes), don't sound so forced.An example is you and I, in the band just Zayn (I don't how to say in techinique words) could use his chest(?) voice and quickly goes to falsetto, in high notes.Liam's tequinique is better, but Zayn voice is better, is more powerful, in low notes I am still can get over Liam, I just really love him.

Zayn did a falsetto in one of his acoustic versions recently, I think? But it wasn't as refined, to me. Liam is definitely discounted on belts in the recorded versions and those have usually been distributed to Harry and Zayn, however, his true natural prowess comes through when you hear him live. As Nick's already mentioned, Liam's voice is the most alluring to me because that dude knows how to make shit sound flawless. His breath control is better, too. Not to mention how he seamlessly switches from falsettos to harmonies to melodies. One of my very many favourite distinct bits was when he covers Louis' verse in Teenage Dirtbag and then moves on to his solo. Yeah, I am very positive the other four would struggle with something like that.

All these Zayn's stans trying to hate on Liam because Zayn can hit high notes. I don't know if many of y'all have seen the LIVE performances, but Zayn's notes almost never sounds like they do in the recorded singles, whilst Liam delivers the same in studio and out. Liam is just so underrated and it's frustrating. Not because he doesn't get enough solos, because he does as he is generally used to carry the songs, but no one acknowledges how vocally impressive he is. Not only is he able to sound DIFFERENT in the songs- as he has covered MJ, and Maroon Five and been able to go from pop to rnb and much more- (which is something that I often see Zayn struggle with ex:same sometimes lazy rnb tone in their bubble gum pop songs.) but he harmonizes well and has great control over his voice. While Zayn often strains his voice, Liam doesn't. Yes, his upper register could use a little work and he needs to be more confident when hitting higher notes, but Liam's lower register is beautiful and it's not as fabulous as high notes, but just as impressive in my opinion. Zayn is amazing, but I do feel like Liam is a better vocalist with better live vocal performances, versatility, and control over his voice. Let me say Zayn is great before y'all come attacking me for not agreeing with your opinion, I just feel that Liam is better. UPDATE: I see Liam has been taking some of Zayn's part's now that he is gone and you should give it a listen because Liam sounds just as good if not better than Zayn in the songs.

Everytime he does a highnote, his neck veins bulges so much to the point it looks like he just screaming or in a rock band. Zayn may have better upper range skills but Liam is not far behind. Liam is literally better in everything else. Bigger range, better technique, control, stability, versatility..everything. Liam is 1D's best vocalist. He's the only one that sound decent for Xfactor. Zayn is better. Zayn supports more and strains less than Liam. Zayn has issues with jaw and neck tension, but overall still supports more belts and falsetto than Liam. A good example is when Liam tried to take on Zayn's You and I high note. Zayn was able to hit it, but when Liam tried he sounded very trained and that's basically because he was just screaming. Zayn's belts are also more supported (and resonant up to bb4 i believe), Liam's belts are weaker and not as supported. When it comes down to it, range is important as it shows potential, but ultimately SUPPORTED range is what matters and I am pretty sure than Zayn has a more supported range than Liam. Liam's range is higher than Zayn's just because he strained to hit those notes - and that's why he doesn't sound that good to other peoples ears.

Liam is a better technical singer. Zayn's breathing technique is improper and, especially live, it takes a lot away from his performance. They are both incredible vocalists but Z has a lot he could work on.

Well, Liam actually has the better technique. Zayn's belts are mostly strained, he makes it very easy to tell. You can *see* the tension in his neck, the veins are even sticking out. Zayn just has a more "pop" voice, because he really puts emphasis on mouthy technique. He sings more from his mouth than anywhere else.
Don't get me wrong, I really love listening to Zayn, (his music is on all of my playlists) though Liam is often underrated.
Zayn is a tenor, Liam is a baritone, they have different voices. Zayn has a softer so his high notes will always sound better. The you and I note, I think it's unfair to judge Liam on because he hardly had time to practice before he had to perform it live, he was forced Into reaching that note when he hadn't trained his voice up to it yet. Also being a baritone, it was never going to sound as nice and fluid like zayns did because of their vocal types. Liam has way more control over his voice since the start of 1D, probably because he had working on his voice years before 1D was formed. He experiments with his voice on stage, does note changes and riffs onstage perfectly with control. Zayn however does strain his voice, which you can see from the severe neck veins that are evident. Just because somebody can hit a high note, doesn't make them the best singer out there.

My teacher considered me a lyrical baritone, but by the 5th year of the institute I caught a resonance point and took out a bass tone ... My highest falsetto note is D5. But once, out of stupidity, I got out F5, then I did not know the boundaries of the ranges of voices and vocal technique and tried to get the highest note that my vocal cords can get)))

Liam: has a smooth, sexier tone and can sing lower notes.
Zayn: has a smokier, effortlessly sexy tone and can hit higher notes.
I’ve watched countless live performances and they both kill it. I wish Liam did more singing in his solo work, then the comparison would be more accurate. Some of these clips had other vocals mixed in and we know they had to maintain a certain sound in the group that often didn’t show their true vocal range.

Technically Liam has a better voice n have great control but his voice misses individuality like when u here chorus u will not get his voice although his voice provides a base to the chorus...
Coming to zayn he has a strong voice and a longer range to hit notes he had an urban voice maybe coz he's half Asian n have Pakistani inheritance...

I know this comment is old, but I just have to correct you. You can barely recognize Liam's voice in choruses because he was almost always doing the harmony. Liam was only the base of the chorus for four songs: Change Your Ticket, Fireproof (the first chorus), History, and Best Song Ever. Zayn, Harry, and Louis were typically the bases.
Zayn having a stronger voice doesn't necessarily make him better. Also, Zayn can hit higher notes than Liam, but his range isn't as wide as Liam's.

Why should this be a battle? They're totally different singers with different voices....
Zayn has a great technique, and does a major impact on the band's sound because of his belts and high notes.....but so do anyone else, especially Liam...Liam is totally underrated, he can nail the lower register and has a decent falsetto range(but Zayn has a better control of it). But what I'm super amazed by Liam is that he can harmonize with anyone in the band(like Niall but not as much as Liam). He can nail those low and high harmonies really easy without any effort. And believe me, harmonising with someone is just as hard as being the lead, and that's something to be proud of.
Overall, Zayn won in terms of his range and great execution, but Liam won in terms of skill and musicality. Sure Zayn has that musicality, but he's more gifted with his range. While Liam has great musicality and will continue to improve. That's all.
