  • There's a great story behind Redbox. They've become somewhat of a household name and are now the #1 source of DVD and Blu-Ray rentals. Yet, over the last few years they've experienced a noticeable decline. This video takes a look at their rise and possible fall while attempting to provide reasoning behind it.

Beans beans I worked for Coinstar, now Outerwall and was an install PM for most of their kiosks, including Redbox. Most or many Walmart’s have a blue Redbox because that was what they wanted - more representing their brand. You’ll see many of their stores where all kiosks have to be blue in color. After some time, they scrapped the blue & do allow actual red colored Redboxes in their stores. Due to contracts, there were a few stores they did custom boxes for. Another is Publix in FL. They created custom lightboxes for their stores.

I agree. In college there was a vending machine in every building including the dorm rooms and I loved that convenience of being able to easily get a soda and a snack whenever. I keep thinking it would be rad if leasing offices for apartment complexes had vending machines for residences, especially if the unit is in an area where it is not easy or safe to walk to a convenience store or grocery store.

On a side note, I recently noticed this special medical vending machine at an outdoor (US) mall. It had a bunch of essentials that you might normally go to a pharmacy for, like bandages, over-the-counter medicines, pads and tampons...there was even face masks, gloves, and no-contact thermometers!

I subscribed to Netflix pretty much as soon as it was available in my area and stayed on their three-at-a-time unlimited plan for years. One of the great things about it was if I started watching something and it just wasn't that good I felt no obligation to finish it because I hadn't spent any money on that particular rental (and I usually had a couple more DVDs ready to go). Prior to streaming it was the only way I'd found to get that experience.

    • @kenmore01
      @kenmore01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'm currently in their web lol. I still pay monthly for discs (about half are Blu ray) and do the get in mail (I just got Elf and Paul Blart, Mall cop 2 on Blu ray each lol) neither of which were available for streaming. I used to rush them though, much to my wife's dismay back then, but now that she has passes and my life has changed so much, I just don't concern myself much with it anymore. I watch them when I feel like it (watched Elf tonight), and if they lay around for awhile, so be it. Elf is AWESOME, BTW! 😃

Removing the costs of producing and distributing physical media lowered the bar substantially for quality of content. In the old days, the only place to put low-budget, low-effort eyeball traps was on broadcast television, and there was only so much low value airtime to go around. In order to be worth mass printing media, shipping it out, and most importantly taking up retail shelf space with it, it had to be relatively certain to recoup all those costs, so it had to be good enough to get people to want it. There's next to none of those costs with throwing some hastily put together crap on a server and it just sitting there taking up some hard drive space if no one wants to watch it.

  • @94sHippie

I think we are in for a revival of DVDs and physical media as the streaming market is starting to become over saturated and it is becoming harder for people to find their favorite go-to movies and shows. I don't think streaming will go away, but it seems most streaming companies are pushing newer content and original content and investing less in having a wide selection of classics.

People said the same thing about the Walkman when Steve Jobs unvealed the iPod. Not gonna happen. Everything is moving to the cloud, game console are now made without disk drives and consoles are gonna be going away all together soon. Would you like to have to get up a few times to change the disk if watching a 4k movie? A 90 minute movie would require the capacity of nearly 3 DVDs. It more effective, less wasteful for the environment, and cheaper to store movies in a digital or streaming format, which this is already something being done. There are tons of platforms where you can buy a movie or a TV show and own it forever and stream it or even download it, Google Play, iTunes, and TH-cam do this as well. Storage for computers and servers is getting cheaper and cheaper as well and new devices are releasing with more and more storage each year. More people are getting Plex servers or NAS servers for their home to keep an entire digital library of movies. DVDs are EOL.

You talk to someone else who loves movies to help you choose one. You get to browse through their incredible selection. They have an absolutely enormous selection. They have all the old classic movies you can't find on NETFLIX any more. You pay between $2-3 bucks per movie depending on what plan you sign up for. Business is BOOMING in this store. Also games now days, sometimes won't even play, without an update/there may be a disk, but it has to verify/ find proof of purchase, and that its an official copy of the game and its not pirated, and sometimes theres more data that needs to be downloaded, to even play the game. If the internet went down/out then physical media would become viable again.

Former Redbox employee here. I worked at the corporate office in Oakbrook, IL as my first full-time job out of college from 2013 to 2017. I came on at a time where everything was booming and met a lot of cool people. I remember Outerwall was an umbrella company that was formed to house all Coinstar's off-shoots. At the time there were many: Redbox, Rubi (Seattle's Best coffee), EcoATM, Star Studio, Crisp Market and the Canadian side of the Redbox business which I along with several other technicians helped fix machines remotely. There was another company they owned called 'Sample-It!', which offered cheap cosmetic samples at malls. It was a dream job out of college because I was a tech guy and got to work with computers, fix the machines and learn about it's complexities. After getting promoted to the QA team I noticed the company's progress halt in 2015 once they were acquired by an equity firm and they went private. All promotions halted and the company began to down-size. This left people like me in the midst of a career layover. A lot of the brands were discontinued until there was just Redbox left. They bought back Redbox Instant from Verizon in order to give it a go themselves, which I still believe is in use going by the name Redbox On-Demand; but doesn't seem viable (too little, too late). Once all this started to get murky I knew I had to leave, just too much riding on the decisions of the execs. It was a fun company to work for and I miss it every day. It's a shame such an innovative company got caught in the same circle that made Blockbuster defunct.

Going to the video store is such a personal nostalgic experience for me, even more than most. Why do I say that. Well because my little town didn't even have a blockbuster until around 5 years before they went out of business and the video rental scene died. SO for me it was always mom and pop rental stores. It was always a friends parents that owned one or the family down the block. I even remember being upset that big brother blockbuster came in and forced most of them out of business.I'll never forget going to Midwest video to play the killer instinct arcade machine. The one up from my house was called J's video. But whenever you hear people talk about the good old days of video rental stores they always show blockbuster and i think for most of us it wasn't the blockbusters that were our hometown haunts. That being said those times are so far gone that even seeing a blockbuster brings back that nostalgic rush.I mean in our little shops you go to rent the new release and you have to wait three days and have them call you when somebody returned cuz they didn't have a million copies like Blockbuster.

I don't know if Redbox has ever traded in the UK, but it was the same size and functioned in a similar way to a Redbox Kiosk. Nice inclusion by the way at 1:12 of Kings Cross St Pancras tube station.

We used Redbox on the regular a few years ago when we had cable. Then we cut the cord and went streaming, and now we can usually get most movies we want to get for 'free' with one of our steaming services.
We still use Redbox every great now and then when something isn't on streaming yet and we REALLY want to see it, but that is only happening a few times a year these days. And sometimes even then we will just rent it on Prime because even though it cost more, it's more convenient and I don't have to worry about forgetting to return the damn thing.
Interestingly, our most recent Redbox experiences were for movies we wanted to buy. Renting it and holding on to it until they charge for the whole thing was the cheapest and easiest way to buy a few of the movies we wanted.

He's not sure if it was Redbox or video droid, but my dad told me he remembers in the early 2000's (while he was a flight attendant) that the first video rental machines were in airports. You could rent a movie at your gate - pop it into a laptop or mini DVD player - and then return it at the other gate when you land. I have never seen a Redbox in an airport but this seems to be the best direction for them right now. A plane is one of the few places that most people cannot access streaming services. Combined with how many people fly daily, this seems like it would be a great way to get to new customers (and rack up hella revenue in late fees, many people will forget to return it before exiting the terminal , or their landing destination might not have a return station)

Interesting point, I am a pretty keen investor and would dare not say go all in for a business model when the bottom can turn out, especially if there is another gaming apocalypse like in the 80's. After some thought, i think it is genius call it Gamersbox or Gbox may work out the name. Finally kill Gamestop once and for all and then there will be a niche market for people who prefer console games over PC and their market share. It would be a gamble due to digital may be the future for all gaming but i really think if they can capitalize it now next 10 years and ride that wave than evolve to a digital service like an app for consoles it would be a gold mine.

  • @ThePdxster

Netflix by mail worked really well except for the ongoing monthly subscription fee. Had they charged by each disc I rented I would still be using them. I use Redbox now but the kiosks are very limited in what they stock, and then which of those hasn't already been rented out. Plus it's a hassle to return them. Streaming is the future but I don't like the fact the prices are so much higher. VOD via cable/satellite could be a goldmine if they didn't price gouge, charging even higher prices than steaming services. For the time being I will stick with renting the occasional Redbox Blu-ray discs.

Also, Redbox is still typically the first to get newly released movies, but it takes FOREVER. You usually see the commercial "now available on Blu-ray", but the Redbox website says "coming soon". Then it takes at last 3 weeks... who the fuck wants to spend $20 on a movie they're only gonna watch once? Also, they need to have an "express return" slot. I don't want to have to wait 10 minutes for the couple with 3 kids to pick all their movies just to spend 5 seconds returning my movie.

Back in the 2000s, I had a subscription to Netflix, but if I wanted to watch a new release, I went to a RedBox. Most of the time, it would take weeks before you could get a new release from Netflix because other people would get it first. We also had directTV at the time, and no phone line next to the tuner, so we couldn't order movies on demand.

Forget to return your two DVDs the next day and your bill can quickly spiral out of trouble. I once forgot to return some DVDs, went out of town last minute and five days later I was tagged for $25 for two DVDs. There is a hidden secret about Redbox that most people don't know, they also sell there used inventory of DVD's. I mostly buy Disney films. You won't get the packaging but for half the price who cares. It good enough for my kid who wants to watch Toy story a million times.
