This video is dedicated to my Dad, who paved the way for me by eating cereal for dinner in our campervan and showing me just how accessible travel could be

  • @AllySheehan

A few extra tips I forgot to mention:
    - I always find the cheapest time to book is 6 weeks before I fly
    - I always fly Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays as businessmen tend to fly Mon/Fri and families on weekends
    - The app "Hopper" can show you when flight prices are expected to go up or down
    - If a flight is full, offer to be bumped to the next one as you'll receive airline credit (or sometimes cash!)

I learned these 2 things from my friends who traveled across the US + Mexico in their van:
    - If you’re camping or in an RV, IOverlander is a free app that shows you all of the free + paid campsites and lists amenities as well. You can choose to just look at the free ones and if you’re ok with no restrooms it’s a great way to see more of nature. Most national parks have forests right outside of them where you can disperse camp and then get to the park extra early!
    - In the US, every planet fitness location has a free 1 day pass. So they would plan their shower days around the gym locations and they could work out if they wanted to as well!

Oh and another friend just told me about Harvest Hosts - you can spend the night at a vineyard for free/cheap if you buy a bottle of wine or a tour!

If you ever visit Scotland as a person who uses period products and/or condoms, go to a student Union or use the bathrooms on a Uni/college campus and you can stock up on these items for free :)
(Some other countries may do this too?)
Another general one is to take a reusable water bottle and whenever in a cafe/restaurant ask them to fill it for you with tap water! Saves on buying fresh bottled and helps the environment!

I remember I went on a trip with my youth group for missionary work to Abbotsford Canada. My youth pastor”s wife booked our flights and she was able to save money for the church by booking our flights into Seattle and us driving the rest of the way in rental cars into Abbotsford, then we drove back down into Seattle and flew home from Seattle. It saved money and we got to see parts of the border and Seattle we would not have been able to see if we flew straight through. Taking a plane to a near by city or state to your final destination then taking a rental car (if financially feasible), train, or bus the rest of the way can help save money too.

Check the cost of your flight at the stopover point. A round trip flight from DC to LA and a round trip ticket from LA to Tokyo, is MUCH cheaper than a round trip ticket from DC to Tokyo. and you have to hang out at the LA airport for over 12 hours waiting for the next leg of the flight. Use the $500 bucks for a hotel room and a good meal!

When I lived in Byron my flatmate and I used to host couch surfers and it was so much fun! we would host around 1-5 people every weekend because we had a massive couch and turned our house into a hostel lol. Also I spent probably 2 years of my life working in hostels for accomadation and I only had to work like 2-3 hours a day and then got my rent for free. Was super epic in byron where a bed in a hostel room costs like $50 there would be no way I could have afforded living there without work for accom :)

I love all your tips, some of them I already know like the utensils from mcdonalds, I always keep the napkins , salt or kepchup for when I'll need them on the road, one major thing you have to remember is to travel with the RIGHT PEOPLE, cause some friends from camp are EXPENSIVEEE (I've been also a camp counselor at camp towanda pennsylvania) we decided to travel together (a british man and me - from Colombia) and he always want to buy expensive food from restaurants, get taxis , and dont to save anything at all, I woke up ealier to make a hugeee breakfast (we stayed at an AIRBNB) and I made sandwiches for the road/beach and he ate the sandwich like one hour after and of course get some expensive food, its like mannnn you were supposed to safe the sandwich for later, the breakfast was hugeeeee .___. some times I refused to buy more food for myself cause I had my sandwiches , and some other I had to buy cause he made me feel ''poor/trashy'' or he convinced me some other times, sometimes was good to try some new food but if you want to made the most of it, its not something you do every meal!.... so huge tip, travel with the right people.

This is a great video, but I just have to address something.
"I feel like most people have apple pay now..."
Sorry but nope lol I've worked at several hotels and most people just have debit or credit cards. And every business I've ever worked at so far (not just hotels) has not accepted it. Walmart might now, I'm not sure, but it's really mainly gonna be the biggest companies. It might be common in extremely big cities, but I would not say that it's that common yet, and i would highly recommend not counting on it. I've had to turn people away and leave them with no where to stay because they had no other way to pay, and I literally had no way to accept that payment. They were livid. (PS don't be one of those people. I was a desk person and had no control over what options for payment we had). They were not happy, and there was nothing I could do.
ETA before anyone asks, I'm in the United States.
