    As a Scandinavian that can trace my heritage back to the viking age I see NOTHING wrong in getting viking style tattoos even if you aren't of Scandinavian decent, go for it, your body is your canvas and you decide what is going to be on that canvas, nobody ells, I'm actually having a viking style tattoo being drawn up as we speak, it's a yggdrasil (world tree) that will cover my back incorporated in the tattoos I will have runic writing aswell as vägvisir symbol and a raven on both arms symbolizing hugin and munin ( Odin's 2 raven's ) think its gonna look sick when it's done

    I find it ridiculous that people need to justify getting a "viking" tattoo by finding out if they have some Scandinavian in them. It doesn't matter at all. All that's left is the history and the art, and it's to be appreciated by anyone who finds it interesting. I can understand if you find it intriguing to do research on your ancestry, but that's a whole different thing. It doesn't give you more or less right to get some random tattoo... So, if you really into the viking culture and the art that was born from it, go right ahead!

    • @BikingVikingHH
      @BikingVikingHH 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wrong. All that’s left are the people. They are what keep the history and the art relevant. Viking tattoos for Viking people.

      @@BikingVikingHH you couldn’t be more incorrect. You really think the people today are anything like the Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons or the celts? Societies merge, cultures have been shared and that point in history has moved on. The bloodlines and ancestry has become so diluted that we are virtually a different people all together. What is left is their art, their stories, THEIR history. “Viking people”. Tell me, what’s so Viking about you? I have Scandinavian ancestry, I also have Pictish, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon ancestry, you really think I go around assuming I’m ANYTHING like those people? It’s ignorant and foolish to believe so. What makes sense is the appreciation for the cultures that have been left behind by a people who no longer exist as they did in the history books.

    Seeing someone berate other groups of people for not understanding a concept in the beginning of this video, then talk about awareness and sensitivity is the height of irony. As always, people who have little to no awareness can ruin any concept.. this is true in most cases in society. However, I hate to break it to you, but “cultural appropriation” is literally everywhere and has propagated the exchange of ideas for literally thousands of years, and I do mean literally not figuratively. Also just to remind everyone poor actions in history are not exclusive to one group. Rape, murder and warfare has been done by every civilization and culture in world history, it’s not unique.

    Thank you for opening other perspectives on the (sometimes more, sometimes less) well known topic "vikings".
    Romanticizing is common here (even long before Travis Fimmel looking good on the TV screen) for three reasons: First, in a world of phantasy and the will for positive identification, warriors are seen as noble. Second, they were successful, very successful. Third, there is a lack of historical knowledge about vikings (foremost due to the lack of written stuff), this more or less suggests to speculate whatever one wants. I mean, probably the real vikings weren´t even tattooed.
    One may follow this path, be "viking-like" in his daydreams, fearless, strong, upright etc. And one may express that by having viking tattoos, a beard and other decorations. What makes the difference, in my opinion, is the sense of humor that comes with it. Being not too serious about it, realizing that it´s a matter of style on first hand, and everything will be fine. But talking about authenticity, feeling like to revive some long gone heroic and mythical reality by wearing a vegvesir tattoo and a hammer around then neck makes one a reality avoiding moron, I´d say. Of course, one may do so and feel fine with it, but shouldn´t expect to be taken serious.

For me if i got that as a tattoo it's like a way for me to feel like I'll always find a way and find my way through any situations I come across. I understand the rune symbols inside of the circle and I've studied old norse culture. I have nots of the language and I really REALLY respect it.

      Suppose you could take a DNA test (23andMe for example) if you want to find out, but it's really not that important. As the video states, you don't have to be Scandinavian to appreciate the art, getting it tattooed and so on. If you really like it, it doesn't matter which part of the world you come from. It is art after all, and it's meant to be appreciated :)

I am a spiritual person and the tattoos I have is solely based on the meaning and the energy if brings to my spirit. I don't believe that the way the Viking do things was right, but in modern society the same thing happens just in a very "diplomatic" way. The Vikings may have taken things by force, but in modern society things are taken based on the status quo. I love your Channel, apart from the cursing it was great, but I saw your passion. I KINDA agree. I'm a white-as-fuck Norwegian with Sapmi relatives. There's a lot of culture involved, and it's tribal.
    I don't give a shit what people outside Norway does to themselves, to be honest (you be you), but traditional tattoos or dresses are highly localized. I get bothered by "tourists" with the wrong kind of jewelry, clothes or tattoos.
    A Norwegian wouldn't travel to NZ with Māori tattoos. Just as ANY white person wouldn't travel to South Afrika with a Zulu tattoo (as per your example).
    They could, but they'd get their poop stuffed back in rather roughly.

But this seems to only apply if your skin is white. Correct me if iam wrong but old Norse culture is a minority culture.. Not only in Europe but the world. So by that standard. If you are han Chinese no nordic art for you. But I beat you wouldn't see someone of chinese decent blasted for clutural appropriation. If they decided to adopt nordic art. Definitely no headress or native American tattoos for the white guy, that will get you destroyed in the main stream media. But White indigenous cultural items sure anyone can wear those.. 🤔 and people of that heritage have not right to be a even a little annoyed at the double standard.

    We imagine that Vikings , in their wide ranging seafaring intercontinental trade routes, didn’t appropriate from whatever they chose? Additionally, ancient lore indicates that Odin moved north with the Europe Iron Age tribes and altered over time. So really even Odin belongs to all of Europeans at last from the alps northward. But, to appropriate is to appreciate.

    This is a very interesting conversation about cultural appropriation, and I largely agree with most of it. In my view cultural appropriation ethics loses its meaning when you move beyond discussing sacred objects or clan or tribal identity objects with a highly specific connection with a specific group of living people where there are specific cultural rules around the use of the object. For example, I would not buy a totem pole unless it was made by a Pacific Northwest artist for me in such a way where both he and I are following the cultural rules the tribe where the imagery is from. Some Native American cultures take great offence when white people display their artwork without permission or outside the cultural parameters of the object. Others find it as a source of income for the community to sell their artwork. The rules for navigating this with a specific culture in mind is a legitimate conversation. However, much of the current conversation about cultural appropriation leads to such a spiderweb of logical conundrums to make it pointless nonsense. Most of us, especially in the USA, are ethnic muts. We live in a globalist society where everything is an amalgamation of cultural stuff from all over the world. Here, in SE Georgia (USA), I can go to a Chinese restaurant full of cheesy reproduction Chinese artwork. One could argue that everything in it is cultural appropriation. Yet the people who own the restaurant often are of Chinese heritage if not immigrants themselves. And, of course, the cheap reproduction artwork probably was mass produced in China or some other Asian country. Another point needs to be made. For many while Americans that Viking tattoo on the arm may be as much a statement of white supremacy as the Confederate flag tattooed on the other arm. Just saying.

    I believe that since what people tend to refer to as "viking symbols" are usually Norse pagan symbols so it isn't appropriation if you are a Norse pagan. If you think you have to be Scandinavian to be a Norse pagan then you are stupid. If you are not a Norse pagan then it is still slightly weird to get a tattoo of something Norse even if you are Scandinavian. It would be like getting a tattoo of Jesus if you are not christian just because you nationality is a heavily christian one.
