  • This video is not meant to demonize or do anything bad to the BBC/Nature/Paleo or LGBTQ+ Community. I support LGBTQ+ as an ally and I’m a part of the BBC fanbase and I love nature and paleontology. In fact, Wild animals have been actually known to engage in homosexual/bisexual behavior, intentionally and I think accidentally too (like the video it’s accidental). Anyways hope you enjoy!

    • @mist5273

Not 100% sure if it's the case here but it doesn't have to be a young male. Some males look like females their whole life as an evolution strategy to sneakily mate without being noticed by the "alpha" males. Many species do that even in the modern day, for example Calidris pugnax

we say gay pterosaur as a joke, man. We can't assign sexualities to animals. Nature is way funkier in regards to sex than we might think, and animals banging other animals of their same sex in not uncommon. Happens all the time in many social species. Does that make them gay or straight? why does it matter? they're animals.

I mean, technically. Yeah, if the sneaky male was down (which would depend completely on species, and Id guess unlikely in animals living like this going off of things like elephant seals), the big one would probably try mate with it. I mean... nature is nature and elephants will try and mate with rhinos, but pterosaurs being gay really depends on wether a male was likely to mate with another male. Which to me, that doesnt seem likely going off animals living in similar ways todays. There probably was gay ones, but the actual likelihood of 2 males actually going at it in this type of collony seems super unlikely. Buut, even if its not in terms of a mating collony, theres plenty of animals that do gay stuff just to maintain social bonds, like male lions.
So whilst this is just a male confusing another one for a female. Properly non-hetero pterosaurs couldve absolutely been a thing.

this is speculation. Nature IRL is a lot less orthodox than we might believe in regards to sex and mating, so a male pterosaur trying to mate with another male pterosaur, wether its because it mistook it for a female or otherwise, is really not outside of the realm of possibility.

@@BeautifulGazelle06 oh yeah. But the point here was to show a 'sneaky' male, which is something very common in animals that have strong sexual dimorphism and a kind of 'beach master' breading style, like elephant seals for instance, or like many pterosaurs likely did too. Homosexuality in nature is EXTREMELY common, but from my understanding, in terms of when it comes to mating and not just a social thing its more common in less sexually dimorphic species. For instance LOTS of birds and of course humans, which for an ape, we arent very sexually dimorphic.

Kinda hate that they partially misrepresented the "sneaky male" situation. A good chunk of sneaky males are attacked by normal males and warded off by females in most species because the males don't develop the secondary male characteristics so 90% of mating done by these underdeveloped males is done through rape. Let's not forget these highly derived sexually selected traits exist for just that, sexual attraction. A good number of sneaky male iguanas for example never take a territory and are regularly killed by both male and female iguanas that developed normally. I wouldn't proudly associate bisexuality with this concept because it basically paints the sexuality as underdeveloped losers that have to force sex just to mate or trick something into mating with it. It's not a good look.

Also the animal kingdom is wild and human notions of right and wrong mean nothing or else no species would cannibalize their offspring and Mexican whiptail lizards would just let themself go extinct instead of using parthenogenesis. This isn’t even gay representation if it was the sneaky male would’ve been down for it or the big male wouldn’t have been described as having made a mistake.
