As an Indian American who lives in Singapore, I must say I'm envious of Singaporeans for the intelligence and civility of their leaders, in both the government and the opposition. While LHL rightfully argues that people should vote for who they sincerely believe in rather than voting opposition for opposition's sake, he openly appreciates his opponent's commitment to the wellbeing of Singaporeans, and respects his motivation as sincere, rather than imprisoning or defaming his opponent as many in the west would have predicted of Singapore's govt. At the same time, while Pritam Singh rightfully argues that the need of an opposition is important in matters such as asking for data that is not being openly provided by the govt but is needed to make decisions critical to Singaporeans, he openly admits the PAP has done well for the average Singaporean.
I understand the frustration of both PAP and WP voters with the other party, but it must be noted that your democracy functions so much better than mine in American precisely because of the basic civility in politics. Unfortunately, I am not hearing that level of respect among my young Singaporean friends. Singaporeans must remember to cherish and exemplify the basic decency that their leaders treat each other with. The rest of the world envies your quality of government, never mind the rest of the countries in Southeast asia, could not in their dreams imagine the quality of leaders and government you have, because in every other country, the toxicity and blaming and enmity of politics overcomes the basic desire to do right by people that all of the leaders in Singapore show. If Singaporeans fail to appreciate this and spiral further into animosity towards those they disagree with, their government will end up similar to that of other diverse democracies like India and the US, and trust me, you don't want that.

actually japan has very little arable land (like how sg has very little water from limited reservoir space), so you can argue that Japan doesn't even have food, a basic necessity like water. Japan manages their people well, or rather the people doesn't require a paternalistic authoritarian government to 'manage' and control them, as seen in how they behave orderly, queue up for necessities during crises like earthquakes even when in dire situations. Also 'international infrastructure' isn't a thing, and even if it were a thing, only supranational bodies like the UN and WB (Jamus' employer) are capable of doing so. Technically, you are praising Jamus Lim's capability in building an 'international structure' during his time with the WB, so this shouldn't have anything to do with PAP.
Even the construction of ASEAN (a regional 'international structure') is mostly due to the efforts of Indonesia as their resources and wealth made it possible in the first place to legitimise ASEAN, and the solidarity of ASEAN was only made possible by ASEAN countries bordering Vietnam banding together against communism. If anything, Singapore was a free rider on the efforts by other countries of the region since SG's resource-poor background meant it could contribute nothing but rhetoric, which seems to be what you're doing now.

Syabas to well managed & well run Singapore. Singapore will never fail. I'm watching Singapore from Malaysia & feel sad that we don't have politicians who can think & work like Singaporeans even though we are neighbours & have the same type of people. One thing I always clearly see in Singapore is, Singapore utilises what Singapore has (land, human asset etc) to the maximum. Malaysia is many many times bigger than Singapore, has a bigger population but is so badly utilised especially during the past few years with big corruptions scandals as well. As a Malaysian, I feel very very sorry where Malaysia is heading to, especially because of the race element. Malaysia can easily look at Singapore & pick the good policies suitable for Malaysia. But the majority of our present government politicians are corrupted & many are not fit to be there. Hope Malaysian politicians will realise this soon & will adopt to fair, better & non racist policies. Any how, I wish the best for Singapore.

In life, there is beauty and even probity in the notion of "simplicity" (something that many educated people think they are above it - I probably am guilty of that too) - ask yourself this one question "after considering all the factors (qualifications, experience, moral rectitude, degree of altruism, foresight, rapport with residents, etc.), who is the party you truly want as your Government?" Settled with one in mind? Good - Vote THAT ONE. No need for 'ifs', 'ands' or 'buts'. In life, you can't have the cake and eat it.
If your answer to the question is WP, kudos, respect, you voted true to your heart. If your answer to the question "Who you want as the Govt?" is PAP and you vote otherwise, we should call a spade a spade - that is the definition of [free-riderism] - because you voted otherwise KNOWING that others will contribute to that assurance of yours. I know it is a hard pill for those who did so to see it as it is but THAT IS free-riderism.

Hi Mr PM. Being a humanatarian worker from the biggest child right organisation globally for the past 5 years, a business unit of United Nations, i am retrenched due to travel restrictions, and in harmony i believe a way to manage my employment status with many grants dispersed by the government. Since global intervention didnt work out for me, and not having the ability to be under a payroll, i stumbled upon an opportunity to be a volunteer under covid-19 response. As a son of the soil, being to many global responses, i realised my contribution to my country is indeed more crucial. As you mentioned, my pragmatic sense slapped me, being a father of 4 children, financial commitment caught up in the race of unemployment, & i started to apply for jobs locally. My question sir- majority of the job prospectus, notwithstanding mycareer.sg, calls for mandarin speaking candidates. Many are still fazed by comments from a notable minister that Singapore is not ready for a non chinese premiere albeit a potential non- chinese candidate was identified, I was further flabbergasted to see Driver jobs concerting on mandarin speaking is a must or bonus. Have the non- chinese speaking candidate even lost the capability of such jobs?
Majoring in Supply Chain & Logisitics, i am able to map the reason behind such requirements. In reality, we have to start realising and acknowledging that there is underlying racism with stating such requirement, or the preconceived notion that "MY PEOPLE ARE THE BEST & RELIABLE". On the flipside the other common reason for such denseness request is because of the inability of foreign associates speaking the english language. If our forefathers had banked on the English language as our first language and business lingua franca for better prosperity and to unlock the gateway to the world, why are we even recruiting foreign associates who dont speak the common language ? I am not a supporter of english language as i concrete believe that english is just a language not an indicator of our knowledge. All i am saying is that all humans deserve a chance to conduct their livelihood, but why are not adopting onboarding process like taiwan, UK and hongkong, where non native speakers are required to attend 4 months of native language fluency course, so that they can better integrate with the society that there will be working. Speaking common language rather breaks the ice real quick. Are we suppose to work around them or are should they be trained for readiness in the country they chose and decided to come in search for livelihood? No one expects queens english, just basic proficiency to creole around with their future colleagues and work environment & the whole world is one piece of land and every single being deserves a chance despite of their geographical identification.
What do we do, as ethinic tamil people (3rd gen) citizens who are by default adversaries to such requirements? The success factors for the Port of Singapore ( PSA) was significantly contributed by many migrant south indian workers ( including my grandfather et al) & one cannot deny that it a key entrepot for the trade industry in Singapore. Yet without much suprise such biased requirements still prevails. As claimed and acknowledged in many arenas, our forefathers were visionaries- which being so, an inclusion of a mandate at that moment, of which regardless of ethinicity, all have to learn mandarin as part of the curriculum- we as minority by statistics, naturally immensed with linguistic intelligence would have seamlessly become competent to fill the role which requires a specific language skillset in 2020... an advantage many of our malaysian counterparts enjoy, due to the presence of chinese medium school in proximity.. i will appreciate your guidance sir..

Be careful of a Piped Pier situation because a leader cites WHO advisory as excuse for their decision made to adopt the flawed advisory. See, they could have made the decision not to adopt by basing on commonsense to err on the side of caution. By making the decision they cannot push the blame to someone else. We must jealously guard against a situation of the Blind leading the blind

In Western goverments, we can hear debates to make it ways to the public. It's the best way to show how public can solve problems. Singapore is just mini-Sino. Hongkong is good example of small island can have freedom debate in democracy.
