I'm from Northeast Ohio and while heroin (and before that, meth) and outsourcing/deindustrialization has hit the state as hard as it has anywhere else, I think this more or less comes down to people who shouldn't be having kids having kids. Kids that they don't want in the first place and probably can't afford.

    • @TheMiseryMachine

Although it's not a defining cause, I feel like it deserved mention. Crimes against kids are the worst. I was watching Steve Wilkos the other day and it amazes me just how many parents are out there abusing and neglecting their children. I don't believe poverty is an excuse. It makes life harder but it shouldn't make you abuse your kids. But after a little more research I realised it wasnt just the less privileged families but this goes across the board. Why have kids if you dont want them. It breaks my heart and it scares me because we are looking at a generation of damaged people emerging from this.

The link between poverty and abuse probably falls somewhere along the lines of a lack of education which limits their ability to provide often they blame the children for the poverty many times these people come from homes where corporal punishment was used and they feel they have to live up to that basically it was done to them I also know that if a family has money it's not always the money that CPS looks at if they walk into a home and is clean with plenty of food they stopped looking there it's not uncommon for these type of parents to use their children whether it's approval from their family or more food stamps Section 8 housing so on that's why they have them and keep them not to mention that mental illness can work into all of this as well as the drug epidemic going on in this country I am of the latchkey generation there was no one to raise us we were on our own for hours and my case sometimes weeks at a time while our mothers worked from extremely young ages Early Elementary School often people of my generation did not have role models love affection or attention which of course is a recipe for disaster

I've worked with low-income families for years. I think generational poverty and generational low access to resources and in-depth ties to the family (people of lower socioeconomic status value relationships over status, education, etc) keep many families living in severe poverty introverted. The abuse can be a cycle. It's what they know, many times. Child abuse happens in all socioeconomic tiers but it's more likely to happen in homes living in poverty. I've researched it and I've witnessed these cycles for the last 20 years. ATOD misuse and mental health also play an enormous part in child abuse. But poverty cannot be ignored.

I believe you’re right about social services. We throw SOOO much money at the defense dept. we need to rain money on our education, medical health, mental health, and get private business OUT of running the prisons. Decriminalize drugs and take away the stigma of addiction, give people treatment and dignity. There are places in the world who’ve tried and succeeded at this 180* approach.
I think the stress on most Americans today is worse than it has been in living memory. The pandemic and earning a living wage. The stress of getting children a decent education. To keep them safe even for godsake. To lift them up to give them a chance at life.
    It is our duty.
We have so much money in this country going to people who already have most of it anyway. TAX those people and businesses and the money is there.
We have GOT to begin working as a team here and lose the survival of the fittest crap mentality. We are selfish. We have forgotten (because nobody has civics class) what having “rights” means. Thinking it is some license to do absolutely whatever we want with zero accountability or consequences. We’ve forgotten that rights have everything to do with a society’s agreement with one another. That it is a group plan not an individual’s whims.
I’m paraphrasing hit you know that quote (maybe Lincoln?)
“The freedom of your fist ends at the beginning of my chin”
You get the point anyway. We don’t have infinite “rights” to the detriment of those around us!
    It’s madness.
This rant I’m not even gonna proofread bc the mess of it might convey my answer to your “why do we think this is happening” question.
There is MUCH work to be done. It is a beyond stressful time. Living with chronic stress on this massive scale and intensity needs help.
.. and leadership from compassionate, forward thinking (beyond ones own lifetime) people. People with a plan. It will take time. But we have no option but to persist.

I'm in my mid to late 30's now but I was born in Ohio along with my 4 siblings. Our parents divorced before I was even in Pre K and we all lived with our extremely abusive mother. DFS was involved with our family even before I was born up until I turned 18 and moved out of the house. We were abused to the point of broken bones and horrible welts from the belt or anything our mother could get her hands on. My mother tried to kill me by strangling me when I was 13. She pinned me down on my bed and pushed down on my neck with a solid oak rocking chair floor runner. That is horrible! I am so sorry you had to deal with that, but very happy you made it out alive. Stories like yours reaffirm to me that children have very little options, and if they try to take matters into their own hands they try to charge you as a runaway! Children need better representation because as of right now they have no voices. Thank you for the comment and sharing your story

@@TheMiseryMachine i agree. DFS and police departments need to work together to advocate for those who can't advocate for themselves. That is what their sworn duties are and if they can't fulfill them then they need to be restructured with people who actually care starting at the bottom and going all the way up to the top in command.

Akron is actually in Summit county. I'm from Akron and will say winters are long, bitter cold and dark (lake effect from the great lakes). It's definitely affected my mental health in the past (I don't live there anymore thankfully). A variety of societal issues (poverty, job stress, rise of cost of living paired with stagnant wages) in conjunction with disorders like seasonal depression (or depression to begin with, which can be exacerbated by seasonal affects) could be to blame for some of these instances.

I’ve lived in Ohio my entire life (23 years) and I’ve been all over the state. Honestly most places are extremely isolated feeling, which means that there’s a weird sense of depression especially the further north you get because it turns more into fields.
A lot of places are run down and poor and on top of that a lot of towns cut back on public spaces like parks and things and they replace them with store outlets that go out of business in maybe a month. Cps and all the aid programs are extremely difficult to get to actually help.
Don’t get me wrong Ohio has some attraction and it is trying in the major cities but when the state stops caring about the avg person it tends to show. Especially with new family’s. I’ve seen quit a few people struggle ti get help. They usually say you have a job you don’t need help when it’s not the case and all that stress on top of the bad drug problem in some counties unfortunately leads to more ignorance and violence

My mom told me that he called his wife the day of his hunter's death (he was only a few months old) and said that he wouldn't stop crying and that he wanted to shake him. I have this feeling he did something bad to his son because of the call and his history with anger and violence. She has worked as a security guard for many years and has a degree in CJ. She's never worked with children and families a day in her life. I've worked with children and families for 16 years with a federal early childhood education and family support program. I'm flabbergasted that NY state is willing to hire people to be CPS workers with absolutely no experience in the field or without a specified degree. Totally insane.

I live in Dayton and one of the biggest problems with crimes against kids here is Children services itself..they don't police some of the foster parents..you know the one's that just do it for the money..prime example of this is in 2008 my daughter's kids eere taken because her water heater broke so the water was turned off for about 10 days until it got fixed..in the mean time CPS rushes in and took the kids for neglect.which they were not. They got bathed and had access to the neighbor's restroom . but while in their care..my 8 yr old was sexually assaulted at the hands of this foster mothers "friend"...who was a known pedophile..the caseworker didnt do homme visits which she was supposed to do regularly..then during on of our visitations...the child said something weird and when we brought it up with the caseworker our visitation were stopped..and all of a sudden her case was transferred out of state.and we never had contact with child until about a month ago..and she's 17 now..keep doing what you do because maybe it will bring about change..llove ya guys

Susan I am so sorry you had to deal with that. I can't imagine the pain and frustration you went through during that time. What you outlined is a very dark part of CPS that nobody talks about, and it's hard to get sources for. It only might make the news if a parent kills their kid and CPS was involved, what we don't see in the news is when CPS takes children away when they shouldn't have, when they rip apart families that were not abusive at all. I want to figure out a way to better shine a light on cases like yours. Thank you so much for sharing your story, we love you too. Hearing voices (when previously established) and trauma from severe abuses in childhood are both mitigating circumstances that under most states parameters would mean both of those parents would not qualify for the death penalty. Not to mention that it is wholly irrelevant as a deterrent. The death penalty should be reserved for child serial killers who are incapable of any kind of rehabilitation and will continue to kill if they are ever released or escape.
Drugs are almost always involved in these cases of death amongst young children, which is supposed to be what CPS is set up to address. Corruption in this office and underfunding of same both need to be investigated by the Attorney General in order for any of this to be dealt with in any way.

Middletown is the heroin hub here. I used to take care of an elderly man up there and rode pass Rosa Parks school everyday. Kinda eerie thinking back on it.
Baby Nilo and his mom lived around the corner from my mother's old house and it sickens me what happened to him.
Cuyahooga County is notorious for dropping the ball on CPS cases. Had they done their jobs, Anaya Day Garret would still be alive and so would Tanaejah Mccloud (i think that's her name).
Many of these cases can't just be chopped up to drug usage. My uncle has been an addict my whole life and he's never hurt me or my children. These ppl are just evil and CPS's corruption paired with gross indifference towards these children is why they fall victim their parents. We have to be willing to admit that sm ppl just aren't fit to raise kids, then acknowledge that CPS is a failed organization and society needs to find other means to protect the innocent b/c CPS is simply incapable/unwilling.

My aunt (before I was born) backpacked through Europe, and ended up in N Ireland and had no idea why she saw people walking around with assault rifles. It blows me away how the US was barely aware what was going on there. Even today, many people in the US with Irish ancestry have no idea that The Troubles even happened, and it was a very short time ago! I'm glad you stayed safe through those times. I lived in Ohio most of my life, mostly in rural areas. Southeastern to central Ohio. I worked in a medical facility and some of the cases of c.a. were horrible. No words can explain the feeling of holding a little girls hand while the Dr examines her for s.a.. or Watching a little boy pleading to not be examined saying, " I am ok" while holding his bottom. I think I have said enough for now. After 30 years I cant hold back the tears.

Honestly, I live in Ohio and barely recognize my state. Every 3rd house has a Trump 2020 flag flying like it’s not 2021 and the election isn’t over. People in the comments section of local pages are openly hostile and disrespectful towards each other. Even driving, you have people riding right on your bumper or driving aggressively. I work in healthcare and people will throw fits and cuss you out for enforcing the facility rules and requiring a mask. Even as Covid cases climb, most citizens are in denial that it’s even a real thing. I remember Ohio being a middle of the road state with friendly drivers and courteous people but that is not the case today. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m not saying anything about anyone’s political leanings, I’m just pointing out that there are a lot more people that are either one extreme or another. There’s not a middle of the road anymore. People are angry and hostile. I don’t understand where it’s all coming from.

    • @TheMiseryMachine
      @TheMiseryMachine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can definitely say similar things are happening here in Maine. Any of the local pages are people just looking to argue, insult people who are selling things, or openly trying to find people who will meet up to fight. People are just so hostile and angry now and it seems to just be mirroring this underlying discontent that so many people seem to be feeling about society and their lives now. It really worries me, because it looks like it can only get worse at this point.

I'm from southern Ohio and aside from a few months here and there I've been here my entire life. I've heard nothing about any of these cases which shocks me being from Southern Ohio especially the Cincinnati case. I find all this terrifying I had three children I lost my oldest in a car accident on my 40th birthday October 23rd of 2019 I've been devastated ever since. she was my oldest. she was going to be a lawyer.she graduated from college for her associates and was going to go into law school and she had a daughter my granddaughter is now 4 years old I can't imagine why anybody would do that. My youngest daughter has autism I've even put her on my channel here and there and and my son is 19 he's working now trying to figure out what to do with his life I've spent my entire life since I was 17 trying to make sure my kids were good trying to make sure they were happy and adjust and okay I'm horrified by all these I will say I'm in recovery now and I have been for several years but my recovery is because of I've had to have several surgeries and they put you on pain medication for that stuff and they don't really explain to you the addictive properties of it especially when you're younger and the doctor that I had is no longer a doctor because of nonsense like giving you opioids just cuz you're there basically. I would turn myself in front of a train to save my children any of them no matter what it is most of the people that I know sadly are not like that it shocks people a lot of people that me and my fiance still have our children and that we raise them ourselves most of the people I know are raising their their children's children so it's grandparents raising children because of drugs or also because of poverty Southern Ohio is a horrifically horrifically impoverished place there is no middle class either you are horribly poor or you have a lot of money and most of the people have a lot of money are not from here they're just moving here cuz it's cheap I appreciate you guys this channel I really like the fact that you guys are bringing this stuff up because the few times that we do see it on the news it breaks my heart especially these people killing their children who have autism I don't understand it my youngest daughter is the only person on the planet that I know has loved me from the time she was born till right this second she loves me when she's mad my other two children that are older and not like teenagers don't tend to like their parents my youngest daughter is 18 and she loves us and she has always been a loving sweet kid why would you do that to somebody who knows nothing but they love you they love you more than anything you're the whole world especially kids with autism I don't understand it it's her fine but thank you for shining the light on the cases cuz Cincinnati is really not that far from me and I never heard anything about the Cincinnati case or the other cases and it just rips my heart out I just wanted to thank you guys for that and try to give you a little bit inside I mean don't even wrong there's a lot of other s*** that causes you know these problems but poverty is a big thing drugs are a big thing and sadly most of my friends don't have their own children they passed them off to their parents or just gave them up to children services it's super sad I have a cousin who had seven kids she didn't raise one of them not one their dad raised him some of them I believe my aunt her mother raised a few of them too it's depressing but I don't know why when you how can you have a child and not be your whole world I don't understand how that can be even a thing but thank you again guys for your channel and pointing this out I don't know if I've helped at all I don't have anybody even read this but thank you for everything bye.

I want to thank you for bringing attention to child death victim cases at the hands of those who should be loving and protecting these innocent angels with their lives! It is heart wrenching to hear that these cases even exist, but knowing there are so many is truly mind boggling! We all need to know how often this is occurring in the hopes that it makes us pay closer attention to what is happening around us so that we can potentially protect those who cannot protect themselves!
Thank you for presenting these cases with dignity, respect and grace for the victims and all who loved them!
This case and being from Ohio sparked a curiosity in me regarding Ohio’s death penalty. The last execution was in 2018 of Robert Van Hook for a 1985 murder. He spent 33 years on death row and was the 56th execution since 1999. In 2019 it was ordered that all death penalties be halted until a new protocol is developed and approved by the courts. There are currently 118 inmates on Ohio’s death row and the average number of years on death row is 21.
You asked if there was something significant about Ohio that is causing this child murder trend and, my opinion, there is not. Humans are humans are humans so there are no consistent signs or circumstances in any of them/us that would allow us to accurately predict that they are capable of such heinous acts against the innocent! I would like to believe that Ohio kind of having the death penalty option that it would prevent people from harming others, but I don’t think people who commit these horrible crimes think of consequences to begin with and Ohio’s death penalty isn’t used enough to have any preventative impact on anyone. I also believe these people convince themselves that they are going to be the ones who are smarter than all of us so they don’t have to worry about the death penalty because they believe they will not get caught!
I think as you continue this sad journey through each of the US states you will find these cases and they won’t make any more sense than every states case before or after.
I love your show, what you are doing and how you are doing it! Keep up the great work!
    ❤️ Missy

There's so many wonderful people out there who are desperately wanting a family of their own. There's no need for a child to die or be abused! I live in southwestern Ohio and can attest to the fact that Ohio is indeed facing quite an epidemic of child abuse. Sadly, certain areas - particularly those southeast of here- have been battling this epidemic for decades with no indication of any real improvement. Both of my parents are retired social workers who dedicated their lives to the fight for the justice and well-being of children. My mother worked in the inner city with teen parents and at-risk children, while my dad was director of our county's Children's Protective Services, and I can personally attest to the enormous toll it took on both of them and their own mental health. I couldn't even begin to estimate how many hundreds and hundreds of nights one if not both of them would come home in tears over some horrific evil they encountered that day. I remember hearing my dad scream in the middle of the night- haunted by some of the unfathomable horror which took place in so many of the homes surrounding us. Now granted, neither of my parents were permitted to share or discuss details relating to any of their cases due to laws of confidentiality. That didn't stop me from over hearing the occasional telephone call or simply putting two plus two together based on what I'd gather from the news, and just that little glimpse was enough to cause me much distress and sadness today some 30 -40 years later. I still become overwhelmed by sorrow or even anger every once in a while due to a particular incident or detail from an exceptionally horrific case I might have caught wind of that continues to haunt me today.
All I can say is that for every unthinkable incident of abuse that gets even a footnote mention on the news, there are at least 100 cases just as horrific if not worse happening just within your county alone at any given time- the majority of which fail to even be reported. Abuse can happen in any community regardless of color, religion, socioeconomic status or any other demographic marker, however there does tend to be an overwhelmingly higher incidence of abuse or neglect within impoverished communities worldwide. There are many different factors that contribute to this phenomenon, however it by no means suggests that middle class or wealthy families are exempt from the picture. In fact, most global statistics show physical /mental abuse to be relatively equally distributed across all economic boundaries, whereas neglect tends to account for more cases within impoverished communities. Sexual abuse is also relatively more equally spread out, however there seems to be a slightly higher incidence in wealthier households. From what I know, the degree of differences between various demographics is not all that extreme or static to be of much significance overall. The bottom line is that child abuse in all of its forms affects families from every walk of life and no community is significantly greater or less at risk than another

I'm in Ohio and ohio consistantly fails children, Aniya Day Garrett, Jordan Rodriguez', , Malechi Wilson, Adonis Mays, Alexandria Hamilton, David Boham, Lawrence King. Just to name a few.
The fact that many of these children had been involved with CPS and nothing was done is appalling. While it's easy to place blame solely on CPS we can't forget the juvenile court system believes that children should always be with the mother first the father second. I personally know one case where the heroine addicted mother has had her child taken on at least 3 occasions and then the court returned that child to her "care". Another case where a "mother" has some kind of mental disorder and has taken her children to emergency rooms and had SANE exams performed on the children on at least 7 different occasions. The juvenile court states that isn't abuse.

    • @TheMiseryMachine
      @TheMiseryMachine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's so incredibly sad. There's a countless number of cases I've seen where the child should have easily gone with their father but since the courts are "mother first" they return the child to an absolutely abusive home.

@@kantwinnada this is complete facts! During the trial for Anaya Day's d€@+h, the prosecutor even implied in so many words that CPS isn't obligated to protect children and it's up to the parents - which is true. But in the same breath, then CPS need not exist. You can't have an organization that claims to "protect children", but then that SAME ORGANIZATION NOT PROTECT THEM. They're wickedness and apathy is what keeps them from doing their job and suffering the consequences when they drop the ball. There's literally no reason for CPS to exist.

I’m from Cincinnati area ( Hamilton) and the last case I myself have never heard about f this boy. But I can tell you that the Butler County Ohio children services have failed many many children as well as Hamilton County children services which is Cincinnati. My sister is a supervisor with children. Services was her job to oversee most of the employees at the Hamilton county until her life was threatened by a male parent, and she was transferred to the warren county division of child protective services, and as much as I love, my sister, I will say that many many years of case, after case of child after child, I feel like they become numb to it that they no longer see the children as children is more like hurting cattle, and that breaks my heart. I feel like they get burnt out, which is one of the reasons I feel like all children protective services across the country need to, place some type of therapy or something where their employees are checked on periodically to make sure that this burn out or hurting cattle ism is not taking place with the workers.
