  • We had Culligan come test our water since it felt pretty hard for a new build. We had a 9/10 hardness. The rest of the readings were fine, but the hardness was creating water spots, pink residue and allowing mold to grow in our bathrooms. We were quoted at 2500 for their base model which included a 10-year warranty and installation. I thought that was a bit expensive, so I looked around online for other options.
I'm not much of a plumber, but I thought getting the unit shipped via Amazon and installed by a local contractor would provide the same bang for my buck as the name-brand units. After reading about various models, I found the Fleck 5600SXT 64,000 Grain Water Softener Digital SXT Metered Whole House System was the best rated for the price I wanted to pay. I then found a local plumbing company to quote me on installation. After shopping around, the lowest quote I could find was $500. The reason being that they would have to run the drain pretty far, and it would take time to make sure everything was working correctly before they left (a couple flush cycles). Pretty hefty price, but with the company I chose, they offered a 10-year warranty on their installation work (not the product, of course) and I'm still saving over $1000 compared to the big-name brands, and after more research, I found that this model is commonly used by commercial properties, so it must be pretty good.
Amazon affiliate link to the one we got: amzn.to/43QmVSe from Pentair, and made by Fleck. As of 7/28/2023: it's listed at $748. The listing no longer says if it includes the bypass and 1" adapters, but mine did come with them back in 2019. Just call and make sure before you purchase. I really liked buying from Pentair rather than the maker because they actually picked up the phone when I called to ask questions before buying and when I was setting it up. If you want to be safe though, here's one sold by Fleck that includes those parts in the listing: amzn.to/3QdDtRb at $795.
We put the settings exactly the way the manual recommends. It took a day or two to really feel like the water was soft - not slimy, surprisingly, like many say happens when you install a water softener. It takes time to work all the hard water out of the hot water tank and the rest of the lines. After a couple weeks, we noticed there were no more water spots on the shower doors, and after we cleaned all the mold from around the shower and toilets, it didn't come back. We still keep everything clean using regular shower sprays every so often and a squeegee every day to keep it dry, but that's about it. No more cleaning on my hands and knees every weekend just to have it come back days later. Hard water really was the source of all our mold problems.

Thx for the video, I have been looking at buying a softener and installing myself, but the drain was an issue, I see yours runs quite a distance, looks like 1” pvc, I’m glad it works for that distance, that was my concern, I did not want to run it into my sump. I will do it your way, thx again for the video.

You use softened water to water your yard? Looks like that’s right off your main.

Where I live, I don't really need to water the yard! But ya, there's a valve to bypass the tank and run straight from the main. I have been too lazy to go down and turn it before washing the car or filling a watering can, I admit.

It's not mold. That pink stuff is iron (rust) oxidizing

Hey, thanks for your comment. Seems pretty logical now that you meantion it. In retrospect, it could have just been because this house was a new build and all the flushing of the system that came with installing the water softener is what did the trick. Or maybe the system is actually catching and flushing it? Either way, no more pink stuff (iron), and we're enjoying the soft water.

Hi I had the same Flex-5600sxt 64000 grain softener installed a couple of weeks ago but the water taste is very salty. Could you Pl. share the settings of the softener. I did regeneration process manually. still the water taste is salty. 2 days ago I changed the hardness from 10 to 6(it was 10 1st week of install). btw, I put 3 bags of salt in the brine tank.
    1) Initially for few weekly Should i do more regeneration process every 2 or 3 days? so that the strong salt taste will go away.
    2) Should i increase the Hardness setting H to some high number?
    3) Is there any setting that will use less salt for back wash.
    4) What should be TDS # after softener installed. (the TDS after softener installed 400)
Here are my Fleck 5600 SXT 64000 settings:
    DF - GAL, VT - DF lb , CT - Fd, NT - 1, C - 64 x 10000,
    H - 6, SF - 10, DO - 14, RT - 2:00, BW - 10, BD - 60, RR - 10, BF - 6, FM - t0.7
Pl. let me know what settings should be changed so that water will not taste SALTY.

Sorry for the late reply! Mine tasted a little "salty" at first too. Our hardness is set to 7 right now. Make sure you have enough salt in the brine tank so that the water level is just below the salt. I can't remember how many bags it took to fill it up the first time, but I'm pretty sure it was closer to 5 or 6. Also, try adding the cup of chlorine to the brine tank, then flushing the system. That's what worked for me. It took a little while for all the taste to work its way out of the pipes, but the difference was clearly noticeable by the second and third day.

So far so good. It's keeping our water soft and no more pink mold. I tried turning it off for a couple weeks just to see if there was a difference and make sure it was actually doing its job, and the pink mold came back. Our skin also didn't feel quite as soft after a shower. Turned it back on and in a day or so everything was back to normal.

Sorry for late reply. Nope, it does not need to be secured to the wall - just make sure it's on a level surface. The weight will keep it secure.

Nope! The softener in our old house got salt buildups in the bottom of the salt tank within the first year. None of that with this one. Water is still just as soft, and we can't hear a thing from our bedrooms when it does its flush cycle at 2am once a week.

Still going strong. No salt buildup at the bottom either. I have to add a new bag of salt once every 40days or so, depending on the season (we use more water in the summer). I just really like how we have gone this long without any new mold or pink sludge forming in our bathrooms, and my wife likes how it helps keep her skin and hair soft through the dry winter months.
