  • Heat treatment is a process of heating and cooling a metal, to achieve a desired set of physical and mechanical properties.
The process of heat treatment is carried out, to change the grain size, modify the structure of the metal, and relieve the stresses.
It also helps to improve machinability, magnetic and electrical properties, wear, heat, and corrosion resistance.
The three stages of heat treatment are Heating, soaking, and cooling.
The different types of heat treatment processes in metallurgy are:
    Annealing,
    Normalizing,
    Hardening,
    Tempering,
Surface Hardening ( carburizing, nitriding, cyaniding, flame hardening, etc)

How many companies do you know that temper in oil, lead, or salt baths? Normal atmosphere tempering is the most common probably followed by vacuum tempering. Those liquid baths are primarily used for martempering (not the same process as tempering), austempering (also not the same process as tempering) or differential hardening.
Also the normalization time cited in this video is true for blacksmiths and knife makers, industrial normalizing of forgings often requires hold times on the order of hours not tens of minutes.
