    That bike has to be so plush. A gearbox and a coil shock. Sounds like a sick bike already.

    The way you change gear by taking torque out of the drivetrain is how your supposed to change gear with a mech anyway.
    I think the pinion box is the future. I dream of buying a frame and choosing a brand of gear box to fit in a standard mounting. Bolting it on and riding for years and years with little to no maintenance

      Hopefully the big manufactures will get on board and start developing the gearboxes (maybe they already are), Shimano seems like the sort of company that would get one of these dialed, and surely sram when they are finished with eagle

      Trail Work If they enter the mass market (by Shimano/Pinion/ Sram) then they won’t be that expensive
      And its not like a lot of bikers don’t have the money

      Trail Work, in NZ at least these bikes are no more expensive than other high end bikes.
      I built up a new Taniwha with the best build I could think of and it came in $3k less than a new Nomad of similar spec

    I have a Taniwha and from day one found gear changing a non issue. Maybe I naturally ease up for a split second when changing under load, because it’s way faster and smoother than any derailleur setup to me.

      100%. I'm after few rides on my Katipo. I'll never go back to derailleur. Changing gears in my Pinon C1.9XR is a dream. The key is to have perfectly instaled cables (that the only one really important procedure). After that, no issue for me. There's no weak point for me personally.

    It needs to be electronically controlled like Di2. That way you would have firebolt shifters plus with a electric servo it could shift faster and under some power if needed.

    Ditch the chain and get a gates belt drive and I could see this bike as near perfect. Really would like to make my next mtb a gearbox bike.
    Also 26 for life.

      My priority bike has the gates belt and it is not possible for the belt to drop plus no grease chain grab on your pants and no rusty chain or oiling it cleaning required. If you need to clean belt, just hose it off with water.

    Would love to have that bike. Still riding my Gian Reign 2 from 2008 and it's starting to show it's age. Maybe after I'm done with all my home improvements I'll be able to save up for one of these. Can't wait!

    Gearbox bikes definitely the future, but I will wait a couple of years for them to become more refined and cheaper before buying one...

      Can definitely agree with that sentiment. The only issue is that apparently everyone else agrees with us, and unless more people start buying these as they are, they'll never get cheaper (although they will hopefully get more refined, especially regarding loaded shifting).
      Honestly, if I had the money to burn I'm sufficiently curious that I'd get the Katipo (the 29er version of this bike), but I simply don't have that kind of money.

      From a couple of years later, I still don’t think I would ride them for a few more years. They don’t seem any better and not enough bikes are coming with them

      they are now. currently a zerode is about a $1000 less than a specialised with better components.

      @@leomolloy5067 Zerode makes some really nice bikes, and you're correct that they aren't any more expensive than equivalently specced carbon bikes from other manufacturers.
      Unfortunately, if you're a mere mortal relegated to the relms of alloy frames and value components, there really isn't much, if anything, available in the gearbox bike market.

      @@gpearce11 I still don't think the limiting factor is cost. from the looks of things it seems that Pinion have gotten there prices pretty close to GX eagle at the OEM level. I think brands just aren't brave enough to deal the re-learning process that comes with gearboxes. Also packaging the system is a pain. all of those fancy dual link bikes will need massive changes just like what happened with e-bikes.

    Needs belt drive. Having a chain that still needs lubed, cleaned, stretches, needs replaced regularly with the rings, and can still break, is no bueno. I can understand desert is alright, but if your summers are mud and rain, is still too much maintenance breaking out a chain cleaner after every ride.

    Thx a lot! That was a proper review and an important look to the downsides. I don‘t know, if I want to deal with the price, the weight on uphills nor the oil leakage for maintenance.. But I loved the suspension, geometry and the shifting during a 5 min test 😁
    Maybe I should just continue saving money and hoping for a new version of this beast 😉👍🏽

    for the future, instead of a twist shift there should be an option for a Di2 style setup with a normal looking shifter and just have a small motor where the gear cables would be right down at the gearbox

    This is better looking gearbox bike ive ever seen (better than G1) give it lever shifter rather than a twist and it could be more acceptable

    Great descender I'm sure. But 35+ lb carbon bike + gear box? That weight needs to come down for sure. My alloy Devinci Troy is 30 lbs and smashes the downs.

      I guess that weight is due to heavier rims and DH tyres than needed.
      My Taniwha weighs 32lbs in a fairly burly build - 2.6 maxxis tyres etc

    Woudn't be the future unless they make it cheap while being in at least near the same weight as what we are using now. May be the future for highend bikes? But for most bikers, I think not, even for roadies. Trickling this technology down for budget consumers is what they need to overcome.

    I stopped watching when you mentioned the performance uphill. That is not going to work for me I need to be able to get those gears shifted while climbing. This would be a great enduro or park bike.

      eddie g I have one of these bikes and shifting is a non issue. Maybe I always used to ease up for a fraction of a second when shifting into a lower gear previously because I find gear changes in the Taniwha far superior to old traditional setups

      Definately it is not the way it looks in this vid. In my opinion (I have Zerode Katipo on C1.9XR pinion) it only needs little pressure reduction for a blinko of an eye and you can change your gears as you want. To be honest it's is not very different to the derailleur gear change if you ride with feel - not to kill your derailleur/cassete system on a very first rides.

    I don't get the decision to include a ratchet mechanism in the gearbox when a freehub suffices. Just stuff to go wrong in the gearbox IMO.

      But the frame must be built to accommodate the gearbox. Probably need a new bike to use this gearbox.

      Maxim Bryson old twist shifters this has happened to me. It obvisouly not a problem on tjis new design.

      There is a mod for the rohloff speed hub who works the same way the pinion works to get rid of the twist shifter and replace it with a normal trigger. Maybe this mod can work also on the Pinion with more modifications ?!

      I though exactly the same. After few rides on rotary shifter (new DS2 Pinion/Ergon shifter) I don't have any minds to go back to trigger ever. The only improvement above rotary shifter would be some sort of wireless shifting. But it would be some super stuff to get real forward feature for gearbox.

      I have a Taniwha and have never dropped the chain. This guy simply had it in the wrong chain tensioner setting.

      Never say never. Eventually every piece will wear out and the chain will drop.

      Trail Work don’t forget that includes the drive train and shifter so you don’t need to spend as much to complete the bike.

      Lord Spam the guy just had it in the wrong setting. The tensioner comes with 3 hole settings. It should be set in the 3rd hole by default as that’s the factory setting. ie I bought mine directly from Rob, Zerode owner designer, and he said they must be in that setting.
      This reviewers bike was set wrong

    Nice try but still too much compromise. Weight, internal drag, twist shifter, price... still not ready for “mainstream”.

      It is that big of a deal because a high end trail bike setup should not weigh 10+ pounds more than an already existing, proven setup.

      When gwin’s downhill bike is only 2lbs heavier than this “enduro”bike... thats a bit alarming.
