the shirt i have on for Russ’ side project Tanith (he’s still the guitarist for Satan), absolutely 10,000% recommend their 2019 album In Another Time on metal blade records for anyone who really loves 70s Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy or the great US band Ashbury. It’s spent as much time in the stereo as the newer Satan albums!
Thanks Ryan - just checked out both Tanith's In Another Time and Ashbury's Eye of the Stygian Witches on Deezer - brilliant stuff I think I prefer Tanith over Ashbury though theirs is damn good too. Love the shared male /female singing with Tanith and the guitar work is great. Unfortunately my finances are extremely tight at the moment but I'll add to my list of wants - could just download the mp3 version from Amazon as its half the cost, however I much prefer having the physical product.
I'm actually here on this video today learning about Satan because I found Tanith first and am absolutely in love with the two Tanith albums! Thanks Ryan for representing them here. And, I'll be checking out Satan albums now too.
You are on fire lately Pete. Another great video. Btw for those who don’t follow the SoT website have a look especially at the reviews section. You will discover a lot of new stuff
My favorite album is Blind Fury Out Of Reach. Shame you didn't include thsi one and Pariah albums, because these are the same guys on all albums , only singers are different.Lou Taylor, the singer of Blind Fury, actually formed it with Kevin Heyborn from Angel witch and they made demo in 83.Heyborn than left and guys from Satan joined the band. It's great that you did show with them beyond Maiden, Saxon, Angelwitch.. You should do other NWOBHM greats Desolation Angels.Elixir, Battleaxe, Cloven Hoof, Chariot,Rock Goddess
A great ranking, thank you😎🤙👍💯...love the NWOBHM and SATAN are one of the best bands to emerge from the movement in my opinion...COURT IN THE ACT for me will remain in the top 50 albums of heavy metal ever made (i rank this album very high for my personale tastes) very aggressive, propulsive and very well played...they were head of their time...cheers🤘👋
I'm not a big metal fan,but it's great to see pete giving these bands the publicity they wouldn't otherwise get,the effort some of these bands put in for scant reward is phenomenal, its a labour of love for them a bit like S.O.T for pete
Pete, you're spoiling us with all this NWOBHM content lately! 1. Life Sentence 2. Court in the Act 3. Cruel Magic 4. Atom by Atom 5. Suspended Sentence
I love Satan with Brian Ross , could you rank the Tygers of Pantang , and Witchfynde ? Both bands have reformed in the modern era. Satan - Court In the Act might have been the first album to contain true neo classical guitar leads
I literally was thinking about wanting to see a ranking the albums video on Satan yesterday. One of my favorite NWOBHM groups, amazing musicians, and still putting out great albums. Hey Pete, how about a ranking the albums with King Diamond/Mercyful Fate records soon?
I already liked it even though I haven't watched it yet. But what's not to like if you're talking 'bout Satan. Great stuff. Their comeback has been pure gold.
I remeber when I first heard "Cout in the Act" many years ago I was like Damn. I haven't heard this Blitzkrieg album before lol little Did I know Brain Ross fronted both Satan ans Blitzkrieg. Always loved his vocals. Great show Pete and Ryan
Thanks guys for giving this fantastic band the love and respect they truly deserve. I still remember how in 83 their debut literally blew me away. It never left my turntable ( only Metallica and Slayer entered the competition a little later). Another great band of that era was Bitches Sin, especially their song Strangers on the shore.
I LOVE the comeback Satan albums. Ross sounds great and the sound is crushing. While we're thinking of NWOBHM....howzabout Venom and Raven? Both legendary \m/ \m/
Great video! Love this band! Their recent live album, Trail Of Fire, is so intense. You can hear the crowd going crazy and the band is just on fire. I had tickets to see them live for the first time earlier this year, and then covid cancelled everything. So bummed!
I couldn't believe what I was listening when Atom by Atom was released, it was out of this world and in that year it was a very unique sound I didn't believe it even existed by that time
This is great, I love Sky clad. So really looking forward to hearing Tanith and the Satan back catalogue. I'm coming more from a doom, stoner, psychedelic, pagan metal angle, but I love blues especially Rory Gallagher. I'd really be interested to know more about the Canadian band McKenna mandelson mainline. They may be blues but the playing is really rocking. I just wondered if you did a video about Free. I will have a look! Thanks guys .
They also have official live albums - I have Trail Of Fire - Live In North America (Live Sentence tour, their first reunion album). I need to check out Pariah and Blind Fury...
Satan is freaking awesome. I completely agree that they're one of the very few bands, if not the only one, who effortlessly walk the line between creating new material and staying true to the old school sound, and THEIR signature sound. Not to mention, they are all absolutely stand up dudes. I always love seeing them. And I also agree with the short and sweet, ten track albums being hard hitting and ending gracefully and leaving you wanting more. That is a hallmark of most of my favorite albums in life.
All of these are pretty damn good. Not sure if you're including the Pariah or Blind Fury stuff, so I won't. 5) Atom by Atom 4) Life Sentence 3) Suspended Sentence 2) Cruel Magic 1) Court in the Act (My favorite NWOBHM album) Thanks guys!! I love the Tanith shirt, Ryan! Great band. Edit: Last I heard Mike Jackson was in a Blues Brothers tribute band. I've heard they're really good! Show idea: Bands that released a great debut, then the rest of the catalog is underwhelming. I wasn't sure how to check for that in the archives, but I don't remember one of those.

My list: 1. Court In The Act 2. Cruel Magic 3. Life Sentence 4. Atom by Atom 5. Suspended Sentence They’re pretty much my favorite NWOBHM band after Maiden. They’re criminally underrated and I think it’s weird that Metalheads would be scared off by their name. So many of my friends have never heard them because of the damn name.
Well worth checking out some obscure nwobhm. Crucifixion sound a bit like tank with that raw feel check out track rhe fox, or death sentence. Also check out paralex white lighting full ep, and spartan warrior, self titled sound like saxon.
Remember the name from back in the day. Can’t remember if I ever heard them. Another band ripe to be rediscovered. Excellent breakdown of the catalog. BTW- Just listened to Tanith on Spotify absolute killer album I hear heavy Wishbone Ash influence. Pete a good choice for a full album review?
Michael Jackson sang on two albums with Pariah. The Kindred in 1988 and Blaze of Obscurity in 89. They were a thrash band so his voice was perfect for that style. Great show Pete and Ryan you should put ranking the albums of Riot, The Rods, Metal Church and Vicious Rumors on your never ending list.
The last 3 Satan albums are certainly great. Wish the drum sound was a bit better but it’s a minor quibble. And yes Pete! Check out Tanith! You will def appreciate... more of a 70’s sound. Also... if you haven’t heard em... check out the band Wytch Hazel... early Maiden meets 70s hard rock.
Yes Wytch Hazel are excellent! I preordered their new album just yesterday. Since you mentioned a newer band in this niche, let me recommend the Australian band Tarot. They have a compilation album of various EPs and demos called The Warrior’s Spell and an album called Reflections that are both phenomenal and well worth your time.
1.Blaze of obscurity Highlights: Puppet regime and Canary 2.Suspented sentence/Into the future Highlight: Key to oblivion which is one of the best songs of all time. Michael Jackson is one of the best singers I have ever heard in my 43 years in metal. People tell the story he is still a pop/rock singer. But I don't really know. 3.The kindred Highlight: Scapegoat All other 6 albums are very good too. The reason why the band came back was a festival called Keep it true. The organizer who lives here where I live has been working for years to bring the band back for a show. They did not want to do it. Finally they agreed for one show and it was so succesfull that they continued on. Every time they play here fans ask them to play songs from the albums you don't want to talk about. The answer is always that the band loves the albums but espacially Michael Jackson was so unique and good that they think it would not sound good wtih the current singer. They never changed the style but the band name for non musical reasons. Thank you that you support this lesser known band.
Thanks Pete and Ryan - got into Satan a few years back when I rediscovered my love for NWOBHM after not listening to any of it for a good 25 years or so. I had started to move on from NWOBHM bands by the time Satan came on the scene - had they been around a couple of years earlier they may have been much bigger. Agree that the last three albums are all excellent - Court in the Act is great but the production sucks. Blind Fury's album is good -however I think Lou Taylor was the singer on that one. I have the Suspended sentence and Into the Future ep CD and agree its the least best. Brian Ross of course also featured in Metallica favourites Blitzkrieg as well as Avenger - both had 2 cd compilations out a few years back and both also very good. Thanks for the tip about Tanith I'll have to check them out as the Tippins/Ramsey guitar axis is great.
The late great Roky Erickson had a MAJOR influence on Satan in terms of sound, subject matter and so much more. Just listen to Roky's album "The Evil Ones" from 1981 and get back to me ;-). Songs like: Stand For The Fire Demon, I Think Of Demons, If You Have Ghosts, Haunt, Bloody Hammer, Don't Shake Me Lucifer, Burn The Flames, I Walked With Zombies, It's a Cold Night for Alligators, etc.. In fact, most of those songs were already released in the mid 70's when he performed them with Blieb Alien (Roky Erickson and the Aliens).
Sorry, I'm not hearing it. Other than horror themed song titles and lots of guitar solos, it's psychedelic rock (and good psychedelic rock) with a rootsy, almost Southern flair. No resemblance to the music of Satan to my ears whatsoever. Whether the band listened to him or not I have no idea.
@@seaoftranquilityprog That's cool. Our ears hear different things. Btw, I was telling the people in the comments to check out Roky's solo career work. I was sure you already were familiar with him Pete. Especially considering you probably are a fan of his original late 1960's band, The 13th Floor Elevators. Roky was a criminally underrated musician and definitely ahead of his time. Brilliant songwriter he was. RIP.
I’m checking out the 83 album. Fuckin slays man! I never viewed these guys as NWOBHM. Thought they were more along the lines of Fates Warning or Savatage or Armoured Saint. What a mistake on my part! Thanks Pete!
Life Sentence Court in the Act Into the Future Cruel Magic Atom by Atom Suspended Sentence and not to forget Pariah - Blaze of Obscurity with Michael Jackson on vocals
Absolutely agree, to me he's as good or better than any of the other widely acclaimed big names of the genre. His couple of demos with Avenger are pretty solid too.
Tyrant would be a good rank. Their newest album with Robert Lowe on vocals is my favorite. I rank Their albums from newest to oldest and i love all 4 albums.
Love this band. Satan can do no wrong. They came to Louisville Kentucky October 2016 and played in front of about 30 people and it was the best show I had ever seen in that type of setting. They were just amazing and perfect.
Suspended Sentence and Into the Future might have their most challenging guitar work and undoubtedly have their tightest rhythm section performances ever. If you think not on terms Songs but in terms Pieces you might have to rank them otherwise. For example Avalanche Of A Million Hearts is an underestimated piece.
To me the all-time best Satan was the first demo titled, oddly enough, THE FIRST DEMO. I believe it was the only one with Trevor Robinson on vocals and it was *ferocious* ...."Oppression" is _still_ an all-timer. Naturally, I leaped at the chance to pick up Court in the Act (from the legendary Zig Zag Records) but I was stunned - alas, with disappointment - at the new singer (Brian Ross). In retrospect there was nothing wrong with it, but it seemed a world away from the balls-out underground/Gothic majesty of that demo. Maybe I ought to give them another try, though.
I just got into Satan in 2019. I only picked up the albums with Brian singing though. Love the band. I might ease my way into Blitzkrieg. I have A Time of Changes and 10 years of Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg aren't quite as good as Satan, but that Buried Alive demo(featured on 10 years) is amazing, and the song Blitzkrieg on it is far superior to the version that ended up on A Time of Changes
The Michael Jackson albums are my favorites. I hear Suspended Sentence, The Kindred and Blaze Of Obscurity pretty on the same (very high) level. They are among the most underrated albums ever.
Absolutely agreeing about the best Comeback in Metal comment. Saw them couple of times and they really ripped every time - I mean these guys are in their late 50s or so and bring up so much energy! I also like your rankings but too bad you left out the Into the Future EP and the Kiss of Death Single - I know, it’s called Ranking the Albums and Not Ranking Everything but especially NWOBHM Bands got often much more to offer than their regular Albums. I really dig the Michael Jackson Stuff, especially the EP (Ice Man - that Mainriff rules) but also the Records under the Pariah Banner are great (more speed or thrash).
I love the band name. Wouldn't change it for anything! Would they have been more succesful with a different name, its very possible. But im glad they stuck to their guns.
Right, and I'm not sure how much more success it brought them. Also, i know metal archives says that it was just a name change, but i was always under the impression that it was more than that, bordering on being a different band altogether, hence the name changes.
@@darkhymnsfromthecoldnorth It's kind of a weird name though because it doesn't really fit them. Sounds like a black metal band or something. I'm honestly surprised there wasn't a band called Satan sooner.
@@darkhymnsfromthecoldnorth The other two names are great too. Pariah is cool, and Blind Fury sounds awesome. Who knows if they name had anything to do with it though. Angel Witch sounds pretty damn evil too, and Iron Maiden is a pretty gruesome name when you know what they're named for (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Thatcher lol).
Never heard of this band. My mother would have had a heart attack if I brought home an album by Satan or would have killed me. KISS was all she could handle. NWOBHM not really my jam.
Sorry Pete but Satan is Satan, good licks or not. If this support for Satan continues I will unsubscribe. If not Satan oriented then why the name. Bad taste on your part.
Did you object to Black Sabbath or Lucifer’s Friend as well? Come on. Demonic, pagan, satanic, occult iconography and themes are rife in the rock and metal genre. I don’t know how you can just pick on this band or how you could be into this genre if you are that sensitive about religious concepts.
the shirt i have on for Russ’ side project Tanith (he’s still the guitarist for Satan), absolutely 10,000% recommend their 2019 album In Another Time on metal blade records for anyone who really loves 70s Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy or the great US band Ashbury. Pete, would you do a ranking the albums of Bowie and Neil young? Two essential acts that should be in your show. Thanks in advance.
Bowie potentially yes. NY has way too many albums, many of which I've never heard, so not likely. I did do a Top 10 songs show on both though.

Virtue we stand to fight awesome tune nwobhm. Iron maiden sounding killer tune obscure and awesome.
Shame you ignored the Pariah albums, as I think those are the best ones
Pentagram's comeback was pretty damn impressive too.
Tanith great shirt
We need a Cirith Ungol ranking the albums
Wonder if they used to hang out with Lucifer's Friend?
Best reunion albums of all time
Please Ranking Blitzkrieg !!!!!!! Oliver L
Their song Into the mouth of eternity is my favorite
I love the band name. Wouldn't change it for anything! Would they have been more succesful with a different name, its very possible. But im glad they stuck to their guns.
Well, they did change their name to Blind Fury in '85 and to Pariah in '88.
Yeah, there were tons of bands coming out of that NWOBHM thing that had dark sounding names that didnt fit the music.
@@darkhymnsfromthecoldnorth The other two names are great too. Pariah is cool, and Blind Fury sounds awesome. Who knows if they name had anything to do with it though. Angel Witch sounds pretty damn evil too, and Iron Maiden is a pretty gruesome name when you know what they're named for (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Thatcher lol).
did the nwobhm stared power metal
It started virtually every genre of metal born in the 80s. If not first generation, second or third.
'Satan' rules, I love "Life Sentence "
"Cruel Magic "
"Atom by Atom "
"Court in the Act
Suspended Sent...
Pete nevermore shirt cool
Court in the Act.
Life Sentence.
Atom by Atom.
Cruel Magic.
Suspended Sentence.
when i listen to satan i hear thrash metal and speed metal and power metal
Well, isn’t that special, could it be::::Satan!😀 Keep up the great work!😀
Who in the name of Hell is Satan?😏
HAIL SATAN....never heard of this band, good rankings by the way. I will have to listen to their music now.
'Trial By Fire' is their classic song and a good place to get into this band👍

Never heard of this band. My mother would have had a heart attack if I brought home an album by Satan or would have killed me. KISS was all she could handle. NWOBHM not really my jam.
Maybe Satan's music was too soft for her and she preferred Rotting Christ over them?
For me my mom drew the line at Bowie's Diamond Dogs. No way are you bringing that into our house!
@@dofarrellDOF such a great album. Kinda dark for a young kid.
Never heard of them. Terrible name for a band. Just my opinion.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel aren't you?
Ahhh, no.
Sorry Pete but Satan is Satan, good licks or not. If this support for Satan continues I will unsubscribe. If not Satan oriented then why the name. Bad taste on your part.
Satan rules !
And the band too
Bad taste on the part of the band. I'm not even religious, but I find the name unnecessarily provocative and distasteful.
Yeah I agree that it's a cheap and distasteful name, but that's not a reason to unsubscribe! It's not Pete's fault that they chose a dumb name.
@@catsofsherman1316 I agree because if say you like the band, you would say the name. I think they are a good band, but I won't say their name
