Kevin Heybourne is such a legend! It's a real shame he doesn't get the credit for being the guy that inspired countless guitar hero's like Dave Mustaine etc..
Great to see Angel Witch covered. I too discovered them in the Metal For Muthas album. I saw them I think late 1980 in a small club in Birmingham UK and can confirm they were really good. Got to meet Kevin Riddles and Dave Dufort after the gig who were happy to chat and sign autographs.
1- Angel Witch (Debut) 2- Angel Of Light 3- Frontal Assault 4- As Above, So Below 5- Screamin' n Bleedin' HM: Resurrection ( 1998 compilation album that consists of Angel Witch demos)
Just received the new Angel Witch cd... Angel Of Light. I would say it’s arguably their best yet IMO. I know the debut is iconic and without doubt is great but this one is fantastic.

In the early days Angel Witch were a four piece with an extra guitar player. I was there the night they became a 3 piece. A club just down the road from the old Marquee Angel Witch headlining the venue. About 20 mins into the set, a flash pot went off on the front of the stage as the guitarist leaned over and it nearly totally took him out. The gig was held up for a good while and post that night they were a three piece. I think that was 78 though, I'm going to have to plead a Rowley-Birkin on that one, as i was a teenage student and burning the candle from the middle out in those days. Ironically, Pete Gordelier was in the audience that night as well as me and Pete, Spencer Holman and I ended up working together in the early 90s.
Again great video! I have move next month and that will take some money but when I m settled down I am gonna look for Martin's books here in Finland. Cheers from Finland, Petri
Thanks, gents. SoT brings attention to another band that I have no recollection of hearing. Listened parts of the first album; more for the ears to enjoy. Thanks for that. Really looking forward to your 10 albums of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal show. Not familiar with much of that catalogue except from watching SoT for the last 7 months or so. And I always enjoy the shows with Martin as he shares his knowledge and detailed discussions with Pete. Thanks again for the quality shows.

@@arthurprice603 Thanks for taking the time to provide such an extensive list - in particular for providing the youtube links. Listened to I Still Believe by Soldier and now listening to Eden Massacre by Legend on Spotify while typing this. I'll be tracking all of these down to watch and listen to all your recommendations as it looks like Spotify is missing quite a few of these. But the two I already listened to are great. Thanks for the recommendations from these bands across the pond. And again, thanks for your time to make such a great list of recommendations.
@@johnmichaelwilliams6694 You're very welcome. If you’re still interested after a first listen, Soldier have a ‘Lockdown offer’ on their catalogue at soldiernwobhm.com with their four CD bundle @ £10.99 and my favourite album ‘Defiant’ for a giveaway UK price of £3.99.
I was there too and they, like everybody else was great live. They should have been greater. White Spirit were excellent as newcomers too, with a talented guitarist called Janick Gers. Whatever happened to him lol
Ohh this is one I have been waiting for. Absolutely love this band. Here is my rankings: 1) Angel Witch 2) Screamin' n Bleedin' 3)Angel Of Light 4)Frontal Assault 5) As Above, So Below
Kevin Heybourn is one of the greatest songwriters of Metal. He has a special talent.. Even he has only 5 albums ( plus "Resurrection" which is a compilation) , he has created many TOP songs with great ART! He has two GREAT albums ( the First classic "ANGEL WITCH" that is the FLAG for NWOBHM and it is an insurmountable Album forever, and the " US ABOVE SO BELOW " which is the other GREAT album, and maybe the greatest COMEBACK in Metal history. As for " ANGEL OF LIGHT" is a Very good album. Screamin n bleadin and Frontal assult are good albums. I am waiting for their next album.. Kevin go oooooooooonnnnnnn!
The debut is a classic metal record. Just listened to it about a month ago and still love it.Not sure why Kevin decided to quit singing lead vocals in the mid 80's.I am kind of ashamed to admit that I have not fully checked out their most recent albums since 2010's.We did some dates together with them in 2010 and it was a lot of fun. Angel Witch sounded very good and that was before they recorded a new record with the reformed band.Kevin is a talented guy and very cool, nice guy too. 1.Angel Witch 2.Loser/Dr.Phibes single 3.Flight 19 EP 4.Screamin' 'N' Bleedin' 5.Frontal Assault
Any comments on the '78 demo? Those versions easily overshadow the subsequent debut and EP recordings of those songs, sounding way darker and slower. Worth checking for sure.
I think that “10 favorite NWOBHM albums” could start off a cool new top 10 variation. Shows that look at specific genres/eras as a whole. Top 10s of stuff like 80s thrash metal albums/songs, 70s prog albums/songs, 70s metal albums/songs, thrash guitarists, heavy metal vocalists, prog guitarists, prog keyboardists, prog instrumentals, etc.
Lucha Libertaria so yeah I just checked and he has done some, like he has some “favorite albums” shows, so maybe those have been covered, but I think the ones about musicians of a scene would be cool because he hasn’t technically done them. Like he’s done a top 50 guitarists show, but it’d be cool to see what his top ten thrash guitarists would be. He’s got a show about his favorite keyboardists, but I think it’d be cool to see what his favorite of a specific genre (like prog) are. Narrow the parameters down to a specific genre. But again, maybe he would consider these topics as already been done
@@alexandergilles8583 I am with you. More shows like that would be great fun to watch.( 'Progressive Albums of the 80s/90s' would be a cool addition that playlist! )
Really enjoyed listening to this. Kevin has virtually disowned Frontal Assault and Screamin'n'Bleedin' but I think they have some great moments (despite the awful production). And regarding the last two albums - it's great that forty years on K can still write songs that can stand up alongside the classics from the first album.
Am I correct in remembering a tour back in time when I saw Angel Witch as the warm up for a VERY young Def Leppard ?? Or is it just an old time metalhead getting his gigs confused?? I just remember Angel Witch being a great band !!
Yup, definitely. It was the On Through The Night tour - I saw them at Cheltenham Town Hall. And I remember them being very good too. Lucked out at that gig. Edit: it was Feb 1980. Damn, I feel old haha.
I’m sure that these contemporaries of Angel Witch won’t make the SoT NWOBHM ‘top 10’ - which is a shame. Quite a few neglected along the way. Martin is absolutely correct! The debut Angel Witch album definitely has it over the Iron Maiden equivalent. It seems crazy and almost sacrilegious to say it, but it’s true. THE greatest NWOBHM album of all.
lucky enuf to meet him outside the voodoo lounge in dublin when the obsessed played - he was totally cool - i complimented him on his songwriting - he seemed genuinely flattered - an very humble nice guy
True, but not as impressive as the debut of Angel Witch and forced in the same niche because of the name perhaps ? What's interesting, I think, is the fact that both bands/singers were into the occult and knew very well what they were singing about. Today it is easy to let Google loose on the topics of their songs, but back then you had to go the library and actually read a book to know who or what Baphomet was, who exactly The Divine Victim was or what Nadir was and why you'd be leaving it. Like: intelligent metal. Witchfynde's second album went a bit too poppy suddenly, but still great album.

As much as I love the first record (and really like the last two), the two mid-eighties albums are not very good, in my opinion. 5) Frontal Assault 4) Screamin' 'n' Bleedin' 3) As Above, So Below (Surprisingly good comeback album.) 2) Angel of Light (Made my year-end top ten list.) 1) Angel Witch (One of my favorite NWOBHM albums.) Thanks, Pete & Martin!
You guys are all over the place. You started taking about Resurrection and changed to As Above, So Below. And then saying that the production is not good, but As Above So Below is easily the best produced AW album. Probably my favorite AW record. A close toss up between that and the first one. I would rank Angel of Light #3. I don't find the balance in the mix to be that good. Guitars sound buried at times. Also, i think the sings drag on a bit. The first record is great, but I think As Above, So Below is the heaviest. But you guys should have talked about Resurrection more. It's just demos, but great stuff nonetheless. Probably #4 for me. Anyway thanks for doing this.
Priest, Motörhead, and Sabbath certainly didn't come up in the scene, but I'd argue that British Steel, Ace of Spades, and Heaven and Hell as albums themselves were a part of the NWoBHM.
@@husq48 I guess I don't define eligibility for the NWoBHM scene as how polished or epic an album was. To me, that'd rule out pretty much every Iron Maiden album except the debut, as one example. What's more, I don't think Heaven and Hell was that polished, at least when compared to Mob Rules.

I’m gonna have to disagree with most people my ranking is gonna be alot different 5. As Above So Below 4. Angel of Light 3. S/T 2. Screamin N’ Bleedin’ 1. Frontal Assault (I like the production and the songs are awesome and there’s no blues or 70’s hard rock influence like the s/t had)
Unbelievable how killer the last 2 albums are! Plus the debut is a landmark release always and forever will be a crown jewel. I need to re-examine Frontal Assailt and Screamin and Bleedin. Both albums falling woefully short compared to the debut! Those albums never connected with me.
I agree. A '79 debut is the earliest you can go back to. Priest and Motorhead are definitely big influences, and you could even say that Motorhead were the godfathers, but they're not NWOBHM.
@@WICD1969 Yes, when I say debut I mean full-length album. I know there were some earlier singles and EPs. Saxon's debut is always first to pop in mind, but there may be others released shortly before I'm forgetting.
Also a shame that the following two bands did even less well than Angel Witch due to lack of a recording contract and only survived through self-releasing albums. So when you said Def Leppard is brirish heavy metal at the time in the 1980's people called DL british heavy metal because it sounded different back the but Def Leppard is more hard rock not heavy metal!
No way is the first Angelwitch album better than the first Iron Maiden album - IMHO the best IM album and easily and one of the best rock albums of all time.
@Martin Popoff . Regards, you've produced some incredible work. Absolutely wonderful - but you can't be right about everything, fair enough? 'Course liking albums is very subjective and we should all agree on that. However, I was there during the NWBHM and Iron Maiden was one of the albums that I really took to but I'd heard Angelwitch as well, on the Friday Night Rock Show ( a must listen then) and at Reading. I only really appreciated the 'Angelwitch' single - which was an anthem and should have done better as a single. For me, every track on Iron Maiden is a classic. Each track incredibly exciting, anthemic, poignant of the era, magical slow elements, progressive, a step forward from previous metal/hard rock, Di Annio's - great voice, the raging twin guitars. 'Angelwitch', for me, is no comparison - although a good album. Iron Maiden were so fresh and so new and everyone around me seemed to agree. Killers is also great but IMHO second to the first album in ranking - I don't feel all the tracks, as a collective, are as powerful as the first. Lastly, and this probably has something to do with our stances, I'm more of a prog fan than a 'heavy metal fan'. Rock on.
Fortunate to have been a ‘teen’ (with money!) in 1980 - and to have owned both ‘Iron Maiden’ and ‘Angel Witch’ debut releases on vinyl - along with the half decent ‘Head On’ album from Samson. Then in 1981 Legend released their self-titled debut and that, together with ‘Killers’, relegated the 1980 releases for a considerable time. Nice to see that the spirit of NWOBHM is still alive and well and that long standing bands, who have survived by releasing independently over the decades, are still around - both Soldier and Legend being notable examples. @@arthurprice603 Superb. I'll have a look at these. Side mentions: Black Axe - played at my school, thought they were going to be huge, one Friday Night RS session and then no more; Tank - terrific first album - I fell in love with a stormtrooper. Yea.
@@unchattytwit Remember owning Tank’s first vinyl release in 1982 - favourite track was always ‘Who Needs Love Songs’. Mr. P. (SoT) once described Tank as heavy metal for numbskulls in one of his earlier Questions & Answers shows so I guess he’s not a fan, though he appears to like Motorhead who appear similar in many ways. Black Axe, as you mentioned, showed promise but (despite a record contract and name change to Wolf) were short lived. I own their only album ‘Edge Of The World’ (1984) which is certainly more melodic than Tank. Unfortunately, the songwriting is not great and the album’s ‘underwhelming’. Found similar issues with another ‘forgotten’ NWOBHM band Alkatrazz (from Kent) - not to be confused with the more famous English-American band Alcatrazz. Great live band who released a promising first album ‘Youngblood’ (1981) but their second (and final) release ‘Radio 5’ (1982) was disappointingly ‘U.S. AOR’ rather than NWOBHM. I guess that’s what sometimes happens when record companies take bands and ‘smooth out’ their raw talent in order to make them ‘poptastic’! @@arthurprice603 Top work Arthur. Can't see how the chorus of 'Angelwitch' is any less numbskull than ' I fell in love (with a stormtrooper)? In fact it's much more 'numbskull' with the chorus repeated 10's of times with a football chant effect. And Mr P rates the Angelwitch album greater than the first Maiden album! Oh well, it's all subjective of course - we can like what we bloody well like. Have you written anything on NWBHM if not, go for a book!. Yes, forgot that Black Axe changed to Wolf. Lot of listening to catch up on. I also liked TOPT and Saracen. But the NWBHM exciting edge and inventiveness sadly seemed to disappear pretty quickly to me anyway. As you say not commercial enough. I liked Twelfth Night in the same period and the classic 'Live at the Target' - that's how I wanted them to stay, forever. But no before you know it they've got a cranky singer, cut most of the instrumentals out and buffoned their hair. A disaster for music. Though then came neo -prog - Marillion, IQ, Solstice, Pendragon, etc which also pretty soon lost its majesty although they still produced excellent work after the initial frenzy.
Yo everyone has there taste in music NWOBHM is not my taste there was not much in music in the 80s I’m just stuck in the late 60s early 70s music didn’t start picking up until 88 an on with the stoner seen LONG LIVE BLIND OWL, PIGPEN 🇺🇸☠️🇺🇸 Never forget DUANE ALLMAN
Confession: I'm jaded out, possessed by growler, guttural metal vocals. I can't listen this kind of metal for more than a few minutes anymore. It's probably that I've heard too much of it over the years, the clean vocals (Fates Warning), the familiar chord progressions, the dual guitar attack (Merciful Fate and King Diamond.) I'll take heat, but I'd rather listen to early W.A.S.P. for the fun factor than clean-vocal, proficient bands doing doom metal. Ghost would be the exception, but mostly from the standpoint of novelty. Celtic Frost To Mega Theron was the turning point--but that's just me.
I JUST BOUGHT THE RESURRECTION ALBUM OFF EBAY FOR $150 AND JUST GOT IN A COPY OF THERE 2000 LIVE ALBUM , 2000: LIVE AT THE LA2.

Great band. How about a top 10 songs show as a follow-up?
I think that “10 favorite NWOBHM albums” could start off a cool new top 10 variation. Shows that look at specific genres/eras as a whole. Top 10s of stuff like 80s thrash metal albums/songs, 70s prog albums/songs, 70s metal albums/songs, thrash guitarists, heavy metal vocalists, prog guitarists, prog keyboardists, prog instrumentals, etc.
Awesome... I agree with you, that would be cool :D
I think Pete has already done that... Check out 'History of bands/genres' playlist on his channel
@@LuchaLibertaria he's only done it with 70s metal and prog...

I feel that no matter where a band originates from as long their style falls into NWBHM they should be included.
The first album is a classic i havent herd the last two.I will go check them out
Kevin Heybourne sacking those 2 guys in 1981 was career suicide.
1) Angel Witch
2) As Above, So Below
3) Angel of Light
4) Screamin’ n’ Bleedin’
5) Frontal Assault
Into The Dark is a very old track. I remember them playing it at a church hall gig in Eltham in 1978.
I love the new Angel Witch cd ANGEL OF LIGHT! SO damn great!!!
@@arbonne1805 HAHAHA!! I am old, but thanks for confirming I still have a few working brain cells!!!!
Looking forward to next weeks ranking of the NWOBHM top ten. Honestly just discovered Angel Witch absolutely love them.
I’m sure that these contemporaries of Angel Witch won’t make the SoT NWOBHM ‘top 10’ - which is a shame. Quite a few neglected along the way.

Spot on mate. Also they had Dennis Stratton on guitar for about half a dozen albums. Can't get more East End of London than that

Hey guys. Their debut easily the best NWOBHM album of all time. NWOBHM is pure treasure. Diamond Head, Tygers of Pan Tang (great catalog), Sweet Savage, and my favourite Dedringer.

Martin is absolutely correct! The debut Angel Witch album definitely has it over the Iron Maiden equivalent. It seems crazy and almost sacrilegious to say it, but it’s true. THE greatest NWOBHM album of all.

@@ukrocksounds3419 Joan Of Arc warrior queen.... WITCH. Love it
Witchfynde give em hell is so under rated.
Perhaps….along with…

I have. Check the playlists.
Anyway thanks for doing this.
i wonder what number 1 will be
Any Maiden album past Brave New World, yes
Priest, Motörhead, and Sabbath certainly didn't come up in the scene, but I'd argue that British Steel, Ace of Spades, and Heaven and Hell as albums themselves were a part of the NWoBHM.
"Heaven and Hell" to me is far too polished and epic to have been part of that scene.
@@TimmyTantrum I thought the last Iron Maiden album that had any semblance to that scene was "Number of the Beast."

If you count Motorhead you may as well count Priest. Neither one were NWOBHM.
I agree. A '79 debut is the earliest you can go back to. Priest and Motorhead are definitely big influences, and you could even say that Motorhead were the godfathers, but they're not NWOBHM.

Do a ranking of Survivor. Angelwitch were better than Iron maiden, but Iron maiden was more consistent and stable
Stable ?! Please !!!
@@trikkke11 their line up IS more stable
Need to mention the name of the albums more clearly. Otherwise, fantastic.
google dude, google.
Short playlists - possibly of interest? :D

No way is that a better album than maidens debut. Maidens debut is a classic. Phantom of the Opera running free remember tomorrow etc etc.
HM legends??? Hmmmm.
2nd lol
1st! Haha
