There's a subtle conversation being told in kill bill that many just overlook. The conversation is about friendship and ownership. What was the bride's relationship with the other assassins like? Why was the first person on the list O-ren Ishi and not Elle Driver? For that matter why was Elle seemingly left alive? How did Bill view the other assassins? I think alot Bill's character background is told throughout both films but especially in the conversation Beatrix has with his father figure. Bill ultimately treated the assassins like prostitutes. Go there do a job. But then his main left. In his mind he owned her. He made her everything she was. He brought her to pai mei and before that taught her the basics. That self worth and energy she has is his and he'll be damned if he's gonna let some clown ass DJ have it. The interaction between the bride and O Ren tells you that they were friends. Which is why she knows so much about her background unlike the others. O ren was the first because she was close. Killing O Ren would allow the bride to kill everyone else.

Your review seems to point more to the debate or question of “what is filmmaking?”
I personally don’t go into a Tarantino film expecting an overarching commentary on any particular topic.
What I expect and want from QT is, all the entertainment & “pay off’s” of a “genre film”, executed with the skill of a Kubrick.
    Kill Bill doesn’t disappoint me.
Kill Bill delivers everything I would watch “Enter the Dragon” or “Revenge of the Ninja” for, while also delivering better dialogue than 95% of Hollywood films(the Kill Bill universe does contain a “five point exploding palm heart technique”, so the dialog will be a bit heightened), refreshingly unexpected but still internally consistent story arc and plot points, and more “Oscar reel” caliber scenes in a single film, than most directors have in an entire career.
    1. Opening scene in B&W with the Bride’s face, into the the fade in of the hospital room with the Nancy Sinatra song.
    2. The split screen “Elle walking into the Hospital & interrupted scene”.
    3. The entire “House of Blue leaves”
    A. The intro to O-Ren and crazy 88’s
    B. The unbroken overhead shot
    C. Gogo
    D. The amazing creativity used to keep the film at an “R” rating, switch to B&W, transition back into color synchronized with The Bride’s blink, the silhouetted sequence.
    E. Snow garden cinematography
    4. Bill & The Bride on the porch
    5. The assassin sent to Kill the Bride/pregnancy test scene, congratulations!
    6. Budd & his boss talking about his schedule.
    7. Buried alive scene
    8. Training montage (is there a better one? Perfectly placed as her memory, shows how she will escape, & foreshadows the end of the film).
    9. The trailer fight scene choreography is QT showing he can direct a fight scene better than most action directors, the choreography is designed around the inability of Elle to unsheathe her sword, Budd having not pawn his sword, the plucking the eye.
The fight sequence aren’t your “generic bog standard shaky cam” scenes. They are character studies, with symbolic meaning. The geography is planned & conveyed, you know where everyone is & see everything they are doing, it’s not “fast paced cutting to give the appearance of action” like so many lazy directors use.
    10. Killing Bill-The table death scene showdown. The “of course Pai Mei taught her the five point exploding palm heart technique” but she never told him, because that was who she is.
    11. The overhead shot bathroom crying outpouring of emotion, and how she’s been changed.
    In addition,
    QT’s frame composition is remarkable.
Use of music and sound design to enhance and pace scenes is so brilliant & unique.
He surprises and subverts, while also paying it off, which isn’t easy to do.
The overall story is pretty simple, it’s a revenge/hero’s journey.
Telling a hero’s journey is sometimes just about telling the hero’s journey, that is the meaning.
We bring (or infer) as many, if not more of our own “themes & commentary” into the film from our personal psyche as the filmmaker.
It’s why, I can watch “The Shining” in the 80’s and see it as a brilliantly directed Horror film, & have it expose me, for the first time, to the crafts of filmmaking and acting, and be able to tell the difference between Kubrick and other directors that made a horror film.
I can appreciate “The Shining” as an amazing, well crafted film, only decades later to find out, that people will think it’s Kubrick’s statement on:
    Native Americans & westward expansion
    The Holocaust
    Child abuse & Incest
His apology for faking the Moon landing
    Etc.
Who knows, maybe 10 years from now, Kill Bill will be perceived as QT’s statement on Xenophobia or a Women’s rights to choose, or State Sponsored Healthcare, or the Better Business Bureau (BBB-Bill, Budd Beatrix/Bride) or who knows what else?

I felt Vol 2 was great. Both parts. I liked the scenes where Thurman trains with the old master reminiscent of the old kung fu pictures. Camera zooms and all. My fav villain was played by Daryl Hannah. Her character reminded me of a Terminator like figure. Looking for the Bride.

I liked Daryl Hannah as Elle Driver. For once she got to play a villain and she did it well. Aside from that I believe that Bill's dialogue with the Bride at the table is one of Tarantino's finest work. Vol 2. is better alright and more of a spaghetti western in its tone than the kung-fu/comicbook extravaganza Vol 1. is.

I don't think that Tarantino's films have ever been about making a social commentary or being profound or insightful in some way.
I think he is overly concerned with form and style and although he believes in his characters and his stories, I don't think he considers himself as an artist that has something profound to say.

He may not make it his driving force in his writing, but movies like Django Unchained and Hateful Eight deal with social and political circumstances surrounding race. Also, he has stated that there are very personal ideas weaved into his writing, but that he is layering it underneath the genres and characters. KB2 deals with characters who should be untouchable but on the day they we are viewing them they are vulnerable, regretful, and maybe even a little insecure. I can't help but feel like there's something personal beneath that.

I saw the film on Netflix. My favorite part of the film was when Beatrix used the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique on Bill. When she finally got her revenge on Bill for killing her friends and fiance at her wedding, while she was pregnant. The film taught me that revenge won't bring back what you lost. And that what goes around comes around. Quentin Tarantino is a great screenwriter.

Have you ever seen the Pinky Violence films from the 70s. Like the 7 film Girl Boss / Sukeban series,
Sex & Fury, and Lady Snowblood, Zero Woman Red Handcuff s, or my favorite - 'Criminal Woman: Killing Melody' ? You can tell Tarantino draws a lot from those films. They're criminally unknown but theyre amazing grindhouse cult films.

he lifts/copy a lot of scenes from movies that most of the u.s. had never seen before 2004. if you go to imdb for all of his movies and look at the "connections" list you will see what movies he is copying from. for kill bill it's lady snowblood, lone wolf and cub, blind swordsman, shaw brothers and just about every spaghetti western. a lot of this movies are available now in the u.s. and after watching most of them on the connection list you see where he just copy and paste a lot scenes.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 is one of my favorite films and is still my favorite Tarantino film. But I love the insights offered by this review and I can't disagree with what you say about scenes not taking us any particular place. The scene with Esteban Vajeo could have been cut; but I love it, so I'm glad he didn't. The first time I saw KB2, like is stated in this review, I did not get or care about the Superman speech. This film actually got better for me the second and third time I viewed it. Now I love that Superman speech. When he explains Clark Kent's critique on the human race, I relate to that a lot. Like Jackie Brown, the characters in KB are human beings who have been leading these incredibly violent but lavish lives. They are on the brink of becoming comic book characters, but they're not. They are humans who have to constantly deal with the reality that they are more or need to be more than whatever role society's typical pendulum would have pushed them toward. Through that commonality, the characters have some degree of empathy toward one another, despite the fact that it is kill or be killed. The sadness of that is expressed in subtle motions or during conversation, but is abandoned when it is time to cross swords. There's also, I have always thought, some autobiographical and perhaps some self-conscious story telling going on here. Jackie Brown was not a commercial success, and QT was very proud of it (and that's a damn good film). The whole idea of going back to a normalized life feels very much like he may have been expressing his own battles in the film industry through the Beatrix character. But I have nothing to back that up, other than knowing the way he views his own success and what he wanted to accomplish in the film industry. The dialogue and characters feel very personal, especially Budd. That character feels very relatable to the common person.

Tarantino's has always been style over substance. I enjoy most of his movies but as Junk Food. I wished for years that he would do something *out of his comfort zone* & try to make a film that says or explores something. I have given up on that. He's stuck in his rut & really has nothing to say. Living in L.A. so long robs you of essential life experiences which fuels good writing.

KB2 was a bit of a letdown at the end...the final battle between Kiddo and Bill should've been a sword fight like it was at the end of KB1 between her and Oren Ishi. All in all I love both films and can watch them over and over... same with all of his other films. Keep it up QT.

@Wytchfinde I think the ending of Jackie Brown is the saddest ending of all his films when Max Cherry doesn't go with Jackie to wherever she said she was going...I believe it was Spain. There smooching and then the phone rings and she walks out of the bail bonds place and drives away...I understand that pain. The ending of that movie is still hard for me to watch every time I see it. I don't understand why he didn't go with her at the end...I just want to say that to him on the screen even though I know he won't answer me.

One of the downsides of Tarantino is that he takes the tropes of the genres (lenguage, culture, style, themes, music, pace, etc) he takles to full exctent, so if people are not particular intersted in that genre, they are gonna have problems with them. Kill bill vol. 1 was all about samurai movies, kung fu flicks ans anime in general, so if you deslike or dont care for any of those, it will be very hard to fully enjoy the movie. Thats why movies like reservoir dogs and pulp fiction are more generaly apreciated, because crime films tend to apeal and speak to a wider audience.
One thing that bothers me about your review is that you say that some scenes go nowhere and because of that is pointless, well thats tarantino! Every movie of his have scenes like this (the opening in reservoir dogs, the chatter between travolta and jackosn about france, etc) but his writting is what keeps you glued to the screen even if nothing special is hapoening,so if you like thag in other movies i have no idea why you deslike them here.
