    First time I saw Vol. 1 with a packed audience.. it was amazing. Definitely one of the best theater experiences I've ever had.

    Excellent review as always. I prefer his 90s movies rather than the ones he made after Kill Bill. The reason he switched to black and white was to circumvent censorship. In the Japanese version the scene remains in color.

    I'm not a big action fan but I adore both Kill Bill films. Those two and Yimou Zhang's films (namely Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower) are the few films from this genre I genuinely love.

    I believe he used the black and white sequence at the end of the film to avoid an NC-17.

  • @eeek7505
    @eeek7505 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The black and white cut in the middle of the Crazy 88 fight scene was used because the censors were saying there was too much blood in the movie- so he made one of the bloodier scenes black and white to appease them, so the movie didn't cop a harsher rating.

    He had to switch to black and white in the crazy 88 scene to avoid getting an NC-17 rating. But it does end up being a cool effect. It also works well when he does it in Death Proof.

    I saw the film on Netflix with my brother, younger sister and my younger sister's friend at my grandma's house. It was a great film. My favorite part of the film was when she spanked the last Crazy 88 member with her sword and made him run away. I found that hilarious! The film taught me that revenge causes more pain in your life. Killing the assassins won't bring her fiance and friends back.

    As many commenters have pointed out, Tarantino did the anime sequence, the black&white sequence etc to keep an R rating. He also did this in Natural Born Killers. His career or movies can almost be summed up in, How much violence can I get away with? From the ear cutting in RD to head blown off in Pulp

    Used to like Kill Bill Vol 1 when I first saw it. Naturally, I was a good deal younger. When I watch it now it just does't coax any interest from anymore. The whole movie appears like a huge comic book, and unfortunately it doesn't retain its edge with subsequent viewings. Part 2 does.

    Tarantino is definitely a skilled and energetic director (of the ADHD variety), and he's influential, but I pretty much lost interest in him after "Jackie Brown". The "Kill Bill" series was kind of fun, but I really prefer the Asian filmmakers like Park chan-Wook and his revenge films, or Bong Joon-Ho, when it comes to the execution of cool, virtuosic violence. Tarentino was influenced by that group of Asian directors, along with every bad 70's movie he ever saw, but I think his characters are way more superficial. I've tried to watch "Inglorius Bastards", "Django Unchained", etc., but it just doesn't hold my interest all the way through. I'd love to see his influence wane.

    Kill Bill was intended to be released as 1 whole film. The suits made him display it as 2 movies. Greedy guys that they are. I still feel if he had stuck to his guns and edited the movies down to 1 movie and put it that out it would have been even better.

    the black and white part of volume 1 was because the dance team that portrayed the 88's didn't like the scene because of the blood. he proposed changing the scene in black and white and they were ok with it.

    • @iansmart4158
      @iansmart4158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I respect your opinion sir, I firmly believe that anyone who thinks Tarantino's pre-Jackie Brown work is better than his post-Jackie Brown work, is just mistaken. While PF and RD might have had the bigger impact, they just ARE NOT nearly as good as everything he made after.
      He peaked with the PHENOMENAL, Jackie Brown, and continued to make really good to great films. The first 2 are pretty good, not great.

    • @iansmart4158
      @iansmart4158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the impact and influence of his first 2 features far outshine any merit they actually have. Both are good films, but they are surface examinations of the films they're paying homage too.
      Those are film about style, archetypes, and expectations of the type of film they are versus what we actually get. I think Jackie Brown is QT making a film about character, circumstance, and nuance while also playing with form (which is why its not only his best film but an amalgamation of what he loves and ideas he's also trying to push).
      Post Jackie Brown, QT sought to craft actual work that definitely referenced cinema through pastiche but were about deconstructing the given genre he was working in and getting to an underlying truth that wasn't available at that time. He tries similar things with PF and RD, but the subtext isn't there. Its the flash without the depth that's found in his later work. (because that flash is more apparent and LESS referencey, then ppl seem to think it has more relevancy).
      KB is about more than the sword fights, IG is about more than just WWII, and Django is more than just a blaxploitation western. You may not like them, but they're shooting for more underlying depth than anything he attempted his first 2 times in the director's seat.

    • @seminole17910
      @seminole17910 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jackie Brown is his most underrated movie IMHO. I think it's great and it's probably one of the most underrated movies of the 90's due to it was his first movie after Pulp Fiction.

    I love the entire saga of the Kill Bill franchise. The first volume is night and day better in every single way shape and form from the second. The people who like to pretend that part 2 is better are just edgy teens that like to go against the grain. Part 1 is a masterpiece. Part 2 is a mess and I grow to dislike more and more each and every time.

    Still hearing a loud "whooshing" wind sound at the start of your videos and the audio is very echoey because of the flat walls in the space you record in. Please consider purchasing a lavalier mic instead of just using the mic off the camera or even setting up a few blankets to deaden the sound. Not complaining, would just like to see you step up your production values a bit, it would make listening to your video reviews a lot more comfortable to watch/listen to (especially for those listening with headphones) Otherwise keep up the great work!

    I'm so with you. I feel as of late Tarantino has dipped in quality in terms of how tonally consistent his films are and what he's trying to achieve. Django is a film I really feel is weak just for being two different films that are disjointed: a cartoon itchy and scratchy ultra violent spaghetti western and an exploration of the antebellum south and the cruelty of slavery. Hateful Eight is good because it maintains a level of intense suspense while exploring the attitudes of a Post civil war America with its characters and how more divided a country is within its log cabin setting.
    As for Kill Bill as a whole, I see it as fluff. Hollow fluff with fun bits of dialogue and wonderfully choreographed action scenes but I feel it's Tarantino indulging in his own tastes and imitating rather than as you say, being inspired.

    I need to rewatch the other films but I think this is my least favourite Tarantino film. It's so incoherent in style that it takes me out of the movie. It's more of a meta film. It would be OK if he went for a tounge in cheek approach but then he adds several scenes that are just brutal or extremely dramatic (when The Bride wakes up and thinks she has lost her baby) and it makes those scenes feel distasteful. There's nothing fun with children witnessing their parent being murdered.

    • @lampad4549
      @lampad4549 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it isnt supposed to be fun, it's a very tragic moment what the hell are you on about, calling those scenes fun. There is nothing fun about 88 people getting murdered and having their limbs chopped off nor is alot of other violence in his other movies from a particular lens supposed to be fun why aren't you complaining about that instead.
      Incoherent in style? It is very tonally consistent the only part I can see be different is the animation part but that is in accordance with the Asian style of cinema.
      Tarantino had always mixed tragedy with comedy from reservoir dogs, why is kill bill being called out for being distasteful?

    • @Dirkschneider
      @Dirkschneider 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lampad4549 It's distasteful in the same way it would be distasteful to put a slapstick scene in Shindler's List. Almost all the scenes in Kill Bill are fine on their own but together they become a mess. Like putting every food item you like on a pizza.
