See, I honestly prefer the orignal's dialogue on everything except THIS. An important part of Vivian that was removed for the English translation. As a kid I never understood why Beldam was so mean to Vivian since they were sisters. Verbal and physical punishments aside, it still didn't make sense to me. This does. I might be older and have more knowledge to understand it, but even so it would've made more sense.
My stance on issues such as this will always be the same.
Translations should never do anything more or less than matching the meaning and spirt of the original as closely as possible.
at least they kept it to the original here, idk why they changed the other stuff
@@Ursi_ Because these people don't actually care about the authenticity. It's not even kept to the original either, the original Vivian was a femboy, not trans. But they all have the same ideology, the current one (currently) putting trans on the top as the most important demographic (for now). They think if someone is more effeminate/masculine for their sex, then they're just "trans, but haven't completed their transition" as opposed to just a cisgender man/woman that doesn't adhere as closely as most. Think of it like being a different _shade_ of blue, rather than being a different colour. They think anyone that's "dark blue" is actually just "red in denial". If it replaces a canonically white character for a dark character then it’s woke, if something gets removed because it’s offensive then it’s woke, if it isn’t accurate to the Japanese version and censors certain words or scenes then it’s woke. I don’t consider this woke if it actually is indeed accurate to the Japanese script, I just personally wish they never included Vivian in the game to begin with or made her words vague to the point where you wouldn’t even know she’s trans.

@@redhandsbluefaces I don't exactly see the problem with transgender representation in a children's game, sure that topic is typically confusing for the younger peeps but there isn't really anything harmful to it.
I think some people are going to throw a hissy fit over this, especially those who have issues with pandering media. My take is, it sounds like this character was always trans in the Japanese version, and it was censored/references to it were removed when it was translated. In my opinion it seems like a lot of people who dislike changes for the sake of pandering also dislike censorship, so I think this should be seen as a positive by them; this character was written to be trans from the start, and now they removed the censorship that hid that part; it should be seen as not pandering, and also a plus for removing censorship. I think the people who always get mad over pandering would actually make themselves seem more reasonable if they show that they know/researched this beforehand and hopefully won't even have an issue with it since the character was written that way.
Most people who complain about pandering seem like they're made about not being the ones "pandered" to.
It is literally not a victory for censorship. They kept this and censored a whole bunch of other dialogue.
What pandering media you absolute clown ? The very essence of video games is pandering
It was never about disliking pandering to them, unfortunately.
@@MrAlexGhoul ...of which aren't as big a deal as anti-woke folks make it out to be
Ummm, there was never any debate over vivians gender. She was always trans. The controversy entirely came from the fact the original localization decided to remove that detail.
As someone who doesn't care for the politics side of things, i'm glad.
It's not treated as a big deal, but still shows that people like this exist. Its faithful to the original Japanese script, and adds more character to the world of TTYD.
It feels genuine. Not just to please the politics
Yeah, she was supposed to be trans before trans people were in the news CONSTANTLY which is only hurtful to trans because they focus on the worst of them and give them a bad name, like psycho karens going nuts because they looked exactly like a man (not even a wig) and someone got their pronouns wrong or some creepy predator. Those are a minority but conservatives point to those and act like this is how they all are just because they can't stand the concept of trans existing at all.
I like the phrasing of "realizing I was their sister" as a simple but effective way to explain Vivian's transgender identity. And the bullying feeling heavier really contextualizing it.

@@linus6718They didn't leave it up to that at all here

The Japanese don't consider Otokonoko trans and it might be considered cultural appropriation on the west's part putting our gender definitions over those of native cultures.

In Japanese, Vivian explicitly states that while they have the body of a boy, their heart is that of a cute girl. The line about bullying seems to be an addition to the English version. The text bubble is as follows:

So she is trans? Because what people got me confused about is some people say she's trans, while other people say she isn't and was "born" as a female
@@MaxO1MSK People are transphobic and sometimes they lie to themselves and others to make themselves believe that Vivian couldn't possibly be trans. She is.

Please correct me if I'm misreading the dialog, but to me it seems to imply the opposite of Vivian being trans. Rather it seems to imply that Vivian was always a girl but was insulted by her sisters calling her a boy (or ugly like a boy) and naively believed them until later. If it was supposed to mean that she is trans, shouldn't it read "It took me a while to realize I was their brother, not their sister." as in believing to be a girl despite biologically being a boy, then reidentifying herself as female? I don't mean to be insensitive, just confused by the wording presented in the screenshot.
Huh? How does that make more sense?
No, Vivian is saying that she thought of herself as a boy for a long time, and she realized she wanted to identify as a woman, but Beldam bullies her more because she is transgender.
You are correct in Japanese calling any woman a man is offensive or something like that and that doesn’t translated well into English. That is why this misunderstanding persists to this very day.
Didn't really see any naivete from Vivian, let alone enough to be mislead about her own gender. Vivian being a trans woman would be realizing she was their sister, not their brother. What you think is trans would be a trans man, born female but identifying as a man.
@@FireRazorGamesBut Goombella identified Vivian as a man who looks like a woman in her tattle, later at the end acknowledging Vivian as a woman.
I randomly reviewed the original game on metacritic like 2 years ago and suggested that if they ever do a remake there should at the very least be an option for a more accurate translation to the original. I can't believe that actually came true lol. Everyone forgot about Birdo?
Its Bridget all over again...
And, just like Bridget, plenty of people in this very comment section are denying that Vivian is trans. Despite the media in question being quite clear of that being the case. She is just a "crossdresser" or whatever now.

Fuckinf westerners and censoring out Otoknonko's he aint trans just as much as Bridget isn't trans
Yeah it's ridiculous how those people just go into denial.
Bridget was confirmed trans by the creator himself.
Here, the literal only translation that says Vivian is trans is the English version, every other version treats Vivian like a crossdresser, same with Birdo and the MANY times Nintendo references that Birdo is crossdressing.

Yeah it was. Vivian being trans was a main focus of the arc in the Japanese version, but it was edited out in the original English translation. However, the remake seems to be more faithful to the original Japanese version, so that’s likely why it is here.
Saddly, while we won on Vivian's gender not being censored anymore, they censored one of the bad guys catcalling one of the heros, something that wasn't censored on the Game Cube original, if I'm not mistaken

20 years of this BS surrounding Vivians Gender. Good lord it's just been tiring. I'm just gonna do what I have for the past 2 decades and stick to what she always has been in American translations: Female, and leave it at that.
Basically due to the whole calling any woman a man in Japanese being offensive doesn’t translate well to English, well that’s why this infuriating misunderstanding persists to this very day. Few listen however as most just want to believe this because they can’t be bothered to do research although that is admittedly hard to do in this case since most sources think exactly the same as those people.
@@FireRazorGamesWhat about Goombella's tattle identifying Vivian as a man who looks like a woman? If Vivian was a male crossdresser instead of a trans woman, why would being called a man be an insult?

Genuine question - has anyone confirmed if Vivian is trans in the Japanese text for the remake? I ask only because, even with the localized versions being more faithful to the Japanese script, there are still some differences (i.e. the Japanese remake still has the Goombas hitting on Goombella, just to a lesser extent than the original, while the English remake just removes that outright). That and (allegedly, based on some French twitter accounts I've seen talking about the French localization) the French version of the remake actually doesn't imply Vivian to be trans anymore?
Yes, it's been confirmed by OatmealDome, a twitter user who's looking through leaked files of the code.
It can be quite confusing simply due to how the Japanese language functions but yes

You can’t really „look“ trans, especially if you’re non-human.
She essentially says that she realized at some point that she wasn’t their brother, which really only makes sense if she was originally considered a boy.
She was trans in the original Japanese version. Nintendo of America censored this back in 2004
I remember a few weeks ago people gotten mad at those three Goombas dialogue being changed.

I remember people gotten mad that Netflix ‘removed LGBT’ content in Evangelion over it, despite the fact there was still nothing straight about that scene.
Supposedly yes, at least from what I've heard.
The original English GC version matched the Japanese GC version,
but it sounds like the remakes Japanese version changed that scene
so the English remake did the same.

Yeah especially when Nintendo of America/Nintendo Treehouse has a history of censoring LGBT+ characters and themes. Fire Emblem Fates and Engage, Splatoon 3, OG Paper Mario TTYD, Xenoblade 2, most appearances of Birdo, etc. Most of the good LGBT+ rep in Nintendo games were localized by in-house localizers and not Treehouse like Xenoblade 3 and FE Three Houses/Three Hopes.

Is it weird that I’ve always found it weird how Vivian is trans since every other known member of her species is female?
She is a tomboy and her sister bullied her for not being girly enough. All those idiots here and you obviously to can't read between the lines.
Mario logic, the koopalings are also all male with one exception, so the shadow sirens would be no different, two female and one male, with Vivian then changing to female for her own reasons.
@@davidpacifico1019 yeah but the koopalings aren’t the only known members of their species
I mean we have a sample size of 3
It'd be weirder if they were a female only species for no reason. They aren't even treated like a species really, just related individuals.
How does this prove anything? it almost seems more like, and maybe I'm remembering wrong, due to her being constantly bullied by her sisters from the very beginning... she just thought, she must be their brother since she didn't fit in with the sirens as she would if she were their sister, until she realized she wasn't...
I mean, it’s up to interpretation, and GameXplain is using a popular one. But leaving it slightly ambiguous is Nintendo’s style, and it’s the one that works the best.
@@JacksonVoet very true... and because it is up for interpretation, I don't think anyone should say that this dialog confirms anything imo
That sounds like a stretch since Vivian hasn't been shown to be so naive that she trusts everything Beldam says. She repeatedly points out how Beldam tries blaming her for losing stuff the former never gave Vivian. If she were that gullible, she'd be blaming herself more for making Beldam mad.
@@ArcCaravan That is true, but it doesm't really change the fact that Vivian is constantly being bullied by Beldam, and even if Vivian doesn't believe what Beldam says, this still could push her into thinking she doesn't belong with her sisters and thus looking gor a reason to justify, she could come up to that conclusion of being thr "brother" of the three sirens. Still, like in Jackson's comment, this is mostly up for interpretation and not something that could be used as a "confirmation" of anything
