this was so articulate! I think the other side I've noticed is how we're getting sick of influencers. We're tired, inflation keeps rising, and they're wearing Fendi and Prada for free. Even before covid I stopped following so many people online because I realized it just made me feel unsatisfied rather than grateful.
yes
I struggle to eat lasagna at a restaurant as years go by and these people go to 5 stars restaurants for weekly dinner
thanks for saying that. cause i believe a lot of it is genuinely wanting what those people have. heck, WE would be glad to wear designers for free of get paid to wear them. some form of it is jealousy. in raw and honest truth....we want what they have. plain and simple. they go to 5 star restaurants because they can afford it. If we could afford it...we would too. its a toxic thing to consume and its good that you unfollowed them.
Yes it is possible. I only know because Jenna Marbles got famous and a multi million dollar home while still staying the relatable queen we all love
Jenna Marbles is another great example! I would put her in the category of people whose "craft" is comedy. I also think its because she built a lot of her identity off of things like loving her dogs, which is super relatable regardless of class.
But it's also interesting to note Jenna never really attempted to permeate mainstream media and host red carpets, attend the MET, etc. She started as a youtuber and was always just a youtuber, so people still felt relatable to her
This hit home for me, as when I turned 25 my family revealed a sizable inheritance to me. I was working minimum wage jobs and living with 6 roommates who also worked food service jobs.
My life changed radically over night and all of my relationships eventually as well.
As for authenticity I think Hannah Lee Dugan does a good job of this. She was a van life influencer who has now bought two properties that she renovates by hand.
In some ways her content was always aspirational (as most of her followers aren’t 20 year old girls living on the road) but it feels relatable because she shows herself eating, sleeping, and spending time in nature. Which are all things that feel familar to humans even if we currently don’t enjoy as much of those luxuries as we wish.
Emma chamberlains brand of “luxury” makes her seem out of touch because it’s not grounded in human needs but in the pursuit of aesthetic for the sake of it.
While there is a part of all of us that appreciates beauty, Emma chamberlain’s content focuses more on man made and superficial beauty rather than anything real and substantial
amount of money or success doesn't matter she's relatable because she expresses her emotions authentically (she's not putting on a front or faking being cool to get more followers/sell more shite). a perfect visual example of this is when tv reporters go out into public and have to be 'professional'. on many occasions a member of the public will respond to the absurdity of the situation by making a silly face or doing something stupid in the background as an overcompensation of authenticity. this is also why many people moved over to the internet from the television (they realized that everyone on tv is just a fake liar trying to sell something).
I agree
I agree completely with this. This is what draws me to watching certain people. It’s the emotional intelligence and awareness and relating to how they express themselves.
I feel like the early emma chamberlain vlogs are authentic for the viewer and the more current ones are a form of escapism for people
DANG! so true
I would love to see you do a video on Gracie Abrams career trajectory & what you would do if you were on her team in order to finally push her into a big mainstream moment
No one cares about Gracie Abrams
well that’s a sticky situation
I love what you said about how people view Chappell Roan. I also think people are so used to celebrities using a playbook of how to act and be a public figure that almost belong to their fans or the media, and Chappell rejects this at every chance (as she should)! She's not obligated to nicely ask people not to stalk her. She's not obligated to allow paparazzi to scream and cuss at her. She's allowed to set boundaries for herself and I'm glad she's setting the record straight at the beginning of her mainstream career because the same way Doja's rants about parasocial relationships pushed away a lot of people, those who geninely supported her for her craft ultimately respected that and continued to tune in and I think the same thing will happen for Chappell. It might even make her more popular once the heat dies down!
I love that you were able to give credits to the OG! The topic was so inspiring and love that this is continuing the conversation 😄
Of course!!! I love when I see a youtube video that REALLY makes me think, and I get to make a fun little video essay response to it with my own theories :)
I think she thrives because of how well educated she is, so I think people respect her due to her growing her platform openly and keeping her “brand” while still showing the unreal professional aspect of her job
wait... "well educated" ? emma chamberlain? she only went to high school, which doesnt really make anyone more educated than a regular person; also, in one of her podcast episodes she deadass asked: "wait, whats the difference between london, england and the united kingdom?" lmao. not very "well educated" of her
I think quite the opposite, people like her because she's not educated and is "just a girl" so it feel relatable.
She didn't even do any schooling last high school, and is notoriously an air head.
@@amelia.kordowska maybe a better phrase would be either well spoken or social media savvy
@@amelia.kordowskadidn’t she drop out of HS too?
I love his outfit so much
AHH THANK YOU! I wanna make videos on fashion sometime soon :)
this video is so well done!! Everything you're saying makes so much sense and makes me realize a lot about the industry, thank you for making this video cause I'm so glad I'm aware now :)
AHHH THANK YOU! I love making thought provoking educational content like this where there isn't a "correct" answer. It makes the discussion so fascinating
I could hear you talk about topics all day.
My heri :')
I love your most recent post on insta debunking the “economy being better under trump” we need more young people talking about politics and social issues! Even if it’s a sprinkle here and there 💙
Thank you SO much for saying this!! It's something I'm super passionate about and I want to make videos about, but I'm still trying to find my voice with it, and I am also really struggling mentally with the amount of blatant bigotry it has started to invite into my comment section.
It's definitely something I want to continue educating people on❤
this is so interesting and geniusly thought through.
I often think that I would have preferred that Emma keep making videos of her doing chill things like making soup in her kitchen (even if the kitchen is super fancy) just talking about her life like a regular person than pull away from the internet completely.
I think a lot of relatability comes from the way you interact with your audience (normal people). If you treat your audience like your friends no matter what lifestyle situation you have, people don't care.
This might be random but I also hate when youtubers who are known for their relatable lifestyle content (like Emma) switch to having a cameraman(person) filming them rather than filming themselves because it feels like another layer of distance.
Your voice is so soothing to listen too. Just found this channel! 💜💜💜
Maybe their lifestyle and income may not be relatable but as you mentioned there are human things we can all relate to like heartbreak, maybe health battles, etc. now to monetize that would be a little different but hey lol
Loved this topic. One think I think we should all be reminded....money does not buy happiness. We know this to be true and yet it is the biggest lie capitalism have fed us from birth. We should not aspire for extreme wealth and fame. Sure, it would be nice to a more disposable income but at the end of the day these people do not have lives we should envy.
I think people being connected to their humanity makes them relatable but being relatable would mean re-evaluating your success, adjusting your success and knowing that the systems that are in place have given you that lifestyle and that other people are struggling under them like if I became successful I would definitely cap my income to a 100k cuz I want to be comfortable and not rich cuz I don't believe there's such a thing as a ethical rich person.
I think part of it is as well how they film / where they film.
Brittany Broski will film not done up, with her hair a bit of a mess, in a tshirt, looking very casual like you might be at your house. She even makes sure in her Instagram, tiktok etc to never fail to have at least one or two pictures that have that casual , looking a bit of a mess vibe
Comparatively, Emma used to do that where she looked a mess as her relatability but she moved her brand from relatabililty to fashion. With fashion everything has to ve put in place at all times with hair done make up done, etc..... she purposely distanced herself from her original brand to be in the fashion status and now has lost her audience because of it imo
Like Brittany films up close in a room where nothing looks particularly fancy behind her
Emma films events, getting her make up done, and not close up etc
this is such an interesting topic… so many people (myself included) love Taylor Swift because we feel she’s authentic, relatable and she’s wildly successful. Yet… that girl’s a billionaire and living in a pretty tight knit bubble. She’s really not relatable at all but her song writing makes us relate to her. Some people just have the gift I guess 🤷🏻♀️
I have to say… hearing if it’s possible to be successful, authentic, and relateable all at the same time, i can only think of one person and that is Jennifer Garner.
Growing up in Johnson County Kansas, this makes complete sense!!
Third and I know this’ll be great!! Loving your content :D
I just want to say this video was so well done. 🔥
Your videos are so well made 👏
i think that there are still some aspects that can be relatable and authentic while still reaching a large audience. Rather that displaying the lavish and glamorous lifestyles, influencers/ celebrities can show the unfiltered reality of these events and their lifestyles. Ultimately its about connecting with their fans to create an intimate and personal relationship that bridges the gap between being rich and being a normal person.
Off topic, but I admire your style. May I ask where you got your necklace and earrings? They look so good on you!
Thank you!! I wanna make fashion videos on this channel too at some point :)
Unfortunately, both the earrings and necklace I got at a flea market so I have no idea what brand they are from
what REALLY annoys me with influencers, is the disdain for ecology and consciouness of their over-consumerism, while most of the population struggle with their rent.
not really an influencers problem, more a rich person problem to me, but influencers' job is to incite to consumption, which is a shame in the context of global warning. moreover, most of the clothes or makeup they promote are actually given to them by brands...
She’s just not relatable anymore. I can’t relate to her at all anymore. And she never has anything interesting to talk about in her videos. Like I appreciate the art she puts behind her videos now but honestly they depress me. I can’t watch her anymore. Just doesn’t work.
BRILLIANT work!!
On one hand I’m like girl be reallll ik you don’t get it, but on the other it’s like what are they supposed to do? And I do operate on the idea that this will be me one day so maybe I’m the problem. 🤠
I think it’s because people just don’t like to feel like they were tricked or used. Or like someone got over on them. It’s like within a relationship the cheating hurts but it’s more so the lying part of cheating that hurts like you should of just told me you didn’t want to be together or a break.. whatever just don’t do it behind my back and make me feel like a fool
loved the way u talked about such a complex subject! anncy twinkle is another influencer i follow and she is honestly so aspirational yet the most relatable content creator out there. idk how she does it but it would definitely help u get the answer if u check her out!
Wait you explained this so well I love
Hi! Welcoming to the UK! I am hitting you, as requested 😂🤣🤣🤣🤷♂️
First and amazing video!
How influencers and celebs can keep their carreir without oversaturate their fans and public?
Like I got tired of an animator and a singer due the overused of them in ads. I now automatic associate then with the annoyance.
😂😂love the video
Same reason why best dressed is off TH-cam now. She just does promo for luxury brands on insta now. Why bother being a relatable TH-camr now
I think... Make me a millionaire for research purposes so i can get back to you all with a meaningful answer ❤️
you know.... they are people? they dont stop to be humans when they get rich? its weird when people have no empathy for people just because they are celebrities
that... is not the point
Yeah I think most people have more things in common than not
i'm really enjoying your content, so thankful fo youtube that i randomly saw your sabrina video and now i watched all your videos, looking forward to more of your contents in the future 🤍
THANK YOUUU! New episode every week hehehe
I love your content, but you keep saying “interesting” 😅 counted over 15 times 🫡😂😅
That’s really interesting!
please never stop posting. i am literally obsessed with your videos and your dissections of the influential and crazy realm of fame. you truly offer us thought-invoking, interesting and engaging analysis' and i cannot thank you enough. your videos/podcast have a unique spark that will continue to glow due to your effort and the nuanced seed you have planted in your channel and our hands. love from Australia 💘
I WISH YOU COULD SEE HOW MUCH THIS COMMENT JUST MADE ME SMILE
Agreed!! We love YOUR craft on this show! :)
Me watching this from london 🎉. Yeah we need social commentary like this over here
WE HAVE INFILTRATED THE BRITISH MEDIA
You can’t be relatable and successful because most people aren’t successful
Another fab video. Love what you said about those who have skill and those who do not outside of lifestyle.
I’m also curious how aesthetic/pretty privilege ties into this. Brittany Broski doesn’t fall under the conventional standard, which also makes her seemingly more relatable than somebody with a generic manufactured Hailey Bieber clean beauty.
While Emma has a unique face, we can’t deny that she is white, petite and ~skinny~. Just saying.
Since I'm early y'all should listen to my music. I'm relatable and not rich
Fantastic video
i absolutely LOVE your content. Since being out of college I haven't had anyone to discuss media trends/ mass media with. THANK YOU for sparking that passion for it in me again! ILY!!!
Your content is so great and you're so underrated
Can't wait to see your channel grow
THANK YOU OMG! I love making these videos so much. This is one of the most creatively fulfilling things I have ever done and I can't wait to keep growing this channel into something great❤
Personally I never cared about Emma's money because she doesn't show off about it( I am not talking about her sponsored gala vlogs) What I like about her is that she behaves like us, talks like us, thinks like us. She has normal parents that we see in her videos. I feel like she is someone who is thrown into this rich life and she tries to enjoy it. She is one of a rare celebrities that shares her intimate thoughts with us without bragging or sth.
This was a good thumbnail!
The halo effect. Everyone should read the age of magical overthinking. She talks about this whole video in the first chapter!
Vulnerability is also something used by celebrities for relatability or is a paradox. If an ordinary person does it often times it gets ignored. Also side note, British men yas please 😍😍
Bretman is a good example though. So surprised you didn’t mention him
I love your deep dive videos so much! Very interesting thought provoking.
would be awesome to listen similar review for Alex Cooper :) Thanks for the great content
Awesome video ootings!!! Thankyou❤ what about Jenna Marbles though!? Or Marzia (PewDiePie)
You are my favourite TH-camr Nicky! Love love love from Australia 🇦🇺😊🌻
OMGGGG! That is such an honor🥰
Emma doesnt need to have a relatable lifestyle to be relatable to teens/young adults. She has the personality to be relatable. From the beginning people were watching her for her bubbly, funny, real, and bit quirky and cringe personality. She went to a private all girls school and drove her own car by the age of 16, idk how is it in the US, but in Latam (where i am from) that is something only the rich do, and guess what? All of my friends still watched her because she was fun, she had the same girly issues we had. Now she is older, and has so much more money, but she is still her. The way she portrays herslef on camera is very real, and her hobbies have mature just as her audience has as well. I started watching her and we were both like 17, no we are both 22 and it feels like we grew up together, developed new interests and hobbies changed our ways of viewing life, which makes her content still enjoyable
I like videos like this, where people just kinda talk about stuff going on in culture and society and have a good take on it....keep it up!
I would argue that Madeline Argy is almost the British version of Emma Chamberlain. I dont know much about either of them in terms of how they got their start but i know a lot of people find Madeline very relatable and she has a similar style of content to Emma, while having a lot of wealth
I think even before she became famous she was not relatable , she was already a bit rich.
Jenna Marbles is an example of relatable, authentic and successful, well, used to be cause she is no longer a creator
Comment for a comment's sake C;
Where does asmongold fit in this theory
you are so well spoken, i love your content
Fucking love ur channel babe
Thank you for supporting my baby channel🥺
What a great video thank you
I've been looking at emma's videos for the past month and it seems like people are watching her current videos just for the sake of old times and to get a glimpse of how they would feel when they watched her back then. but the thing is her current videos are nothing like her old ones.
I think Taylor swift masterssss this by using her emotions/ relationships/friendships as the way we relate to her
Remember: the more you watch them the richer they are. You on social media contributing to their wealth.
Great points as always.
hey its me
I think this topic is soooo interesting, that paradox is sooo hard to resolve, right now I can only think of BTS, they still fight to win a coupon to buy food even if they’re millionaires and even if they’re luxury brand ambassadors sometimes they buy clothes at random shops and stuff like that, they always make content that make you feel like you’re one of their besties lol
I’m sorry but I respectfully disagree. I was a BTS stan but now a fan of them. I was too parasocial where I watched and bought almost everything bc of how invested I was. I felt like they were besties and that I knew them. I surrounded a lot of my life around them. Yes the boys love the army, but at the end of the day, they don’t know us. And we don’t know them. They’re entertainers and we’re the fans. It’s their job to entertain us. Im not saying they’re inauthentic but they’re doing their job when the camera is on. And I’m sorry but they’re not relatable. At least not anymore. And that comes with fame and money so I don’t blame them. I love them still! I actively support like many fans but we need to be better as an Army to understand we’re just fans. We must stop the parasocial stan culture. We’re not kids anymore. Please don’t take it as a personal offense but as optimistic criticism. Much luv 💜
@@sawyerjones9791 hi, thank you for your respectful comment, and yeah, I kiiiind of agree, I know that it’s their job, at the end of the day we just see a persona that they built, we don’t even know half of how they really are but in my opinion, there are a lot of aspects that make them feel relatable, and you can still see than in their latest content and interactions with fans, there are things that you can’t just act, I have almost the same age of two of them and I can relate a lot to the way that they express themselves and the message that they portray through their music, of course there would be things that will change on their personality, i think it’s kind of inevitable and also I know some of the things that make us feel related to them may be built for us to like them even more, such as the problems about being a young adult, their struggles, mental health and all of that, but I feel that they still show a lot of their humbleness and authenticity and things that can’t just be faked all the time u know? and actually I’ve talked about this with a lot of my friends that are my age or even older some of them even have kids and they agree with that, still, I know they’re not my besties irl, but that doesn’t mean I can’t relate to their personalities, and yup the parasocial relationship can get blurred sometimes but I think I after a couple years of being an army I can differentiate where my place as a fan begins and where it ends. You can be an adult, be mature, have a job, have a stable relationship and still can be a fan 💜 but this is just my personal opinion, soo same please don’t take this as a personal offense hehe it’s great to make a conversation about those things ✌🏽
