The Brat era is 100% the most genius marketing ever. I’m 54 and lived thru ALL OF MADONNAS iconic rollouts and nothing compares. I thought Crash was going to give her the attention she deserved. Especially after that great live show. I was shocked but then again music is crazy that way. You never know what’s going to hit. I’m so happy for her and her collaborators bc George is getting a lot of press too.
So I work at a hospital and I had on green scrub pants and one of the patients who was literally in his late 70s just goes “is that BRAT green?” 🤣🤣 clearly she’s doing all the right things! I always knew about Charli songs here and there but as I was listening to the lyrics on Brat I admit I truly have become a fan realizing how powerful her lyricism truly is. I’ve actually now been going into her earlier stuff as well to see if there are any gems I’ve missed! Thank you for this video!
I just found out about her existence today August the 7th 2024. I played a random podcast as sleep background noice and woke up to the people in that pod talking about her, so I looked her up.
The BRAT album rollout has to be one of the best rollouts this year. Kind of off topic, BUT, it’s honestly crazy that CRASH was essentially a pallete cleanser album, you know ?? Like it was more digestible for a wider audience. BRAT is something that is way more authentic to Charli, yet it’s her highest grossing album . The rollout was truly something I could say boosted the success for sure.
I think what that really proves is that individuality is THE most important thing in music right now. People like Charli and Sabrina have been around for years-- but they only started to permeate the mainstream very recently, and I think that's because they both finally found something so unique and distinct about themselves
@@nicky.reardon i also believe in Sabrinas case she was finally allowed to grow and evolve past this good girl image w she was gradually maturing anyway, emails i can't send was such a clear step in her finally being allowed to be more matured and allowed her to explore aspects that her previous label would've probably prevented (as her four previous albums were all under Hollywood Records) and i do think that allowed her to gain more success bc she's been able to do what she wants.
@@paintingdreams290 100% this. I don’t think it’s just me when I say this, but it kind of feels a little more authentic in a way ?? Like the quality of the music is pretty good, Sabrina’s made some damn good pop songs, if we’re talking about this year “Espresso” was massive. It’s still in my rotation because it just screams summer & joy. In an era where the sad pop is decreasing, this track was much needed. Can’t wait to see what she cooks up for her album…! 👀🫖
The best part of this album is that it’s so viral that instead of asking “are you going to listen to brat” everyone asks “*have* you listened to brat *yet*” as if it’s just assumed that it’s something you’ll do.
I have to agree. Do I believe it’s the best album of the year? No. For me Cowboy carter holds that title. HOWEVER, in terms of impact on the music industry/pop culture as well as the acclaim amongst fans and critics alike, Brat deserves it.
i mean the marketing of this album is a masterclass, but part of the reason it did so well is that the songs on the album are both musically and lyrically something totally fresh in pop, she's basically created a new "brat" genre
Her cover art is very nostalgic for mid-era millennials because you saw stuff with that block colour and exact font all over places like MySpace back in the early 00s. The second I saw it I immediately thought of the internet back when I was in primary/high school.
I love brat endlessly but after watching this and finding out about all the stuff that Charli did before the album came out I'm like?? good lord I really am not as chronically online as I thought I was! What a win
the brat wall livestream reminds me of when frank ocean released his album “endless” on a live stream of him building a staircase, only to then release blonde a few days later, the excitement everyone had can’t even be described
I’m 38 and BRAT got me, genius marketing indeed, throwbacks to music from my era like daft punk and more, I’m obsessed. Also, I’ve never been a swiftie so I’m happy to be a brat.
Those of us who have been following charli for years have always known what she’s capable of, I feel like brat wasn’t born overnight. Brat is like her “eras” it’s like the culmination of all the other Charli’s. But from Pop 2, Charli, how i’m feeling now, etc. charli has always been among the most vulnerable out there. Even in what could be considered not as intimate and vulnerable in lyrics (pop 2, vroom vroom), it’s innovativeness, boldness, and self assuredness is simultaneously so authentically brat and like inspiring and moving, to the point of like kinda tearing up. She’s been manifesting brat for awhile tho, and I don’t think it’s been *just* the marketing either, brat has been welcoming, it’s been without shade or bad blood to any other artist, in fact it’s been like restorative.
About your color theory. I just wanted to say, there is no peer reviewed scientific study that says attention spans are getting shorter. That lessened attention span canard comes from a marketing document. Our brains are exactly the same as they were 20 years ago. The difference is that marketing is getting better at capturing that attention. I know it seems like a nitpick, but it’s an important distinction. Social media is not physically changing you- your attention span will suddenly rapidly increase the moment you stop using software specifically designed to distract you.

Charli probably doesnt know it but she also unknowingly got kpop stans becoming fans of her, because a kpop group by the name "NCT 127" goes by this branding of neon green color. And when brat was released, a lot of kpop and NCT 127 fans made memes that Charli was secretly an NCT 127 kpop member 😭😭😭💚 And so many memes were made, it's the best thing ever. So glad that Charli is finally getting the success that she deserves and I'm so happy that A. G. was on board for the creation of this masterpiece, having followed these two since their very beginning, I'm super proud of them and can't wait to see what comes next! On a side note, Kesha made an appearance at one of Charli's parties early this summer, it was the one with MGNA Crrrta and The Dare. I wish it had been fully documented but there are excerpts on TH-cam and the vibe screams FOMO. Reminds me of the 2006-2010 era, when I got into electronic and pop music but also into popping pills, snorting coke, flirting with girls at houseparties and smoking cigarettes, they're really bringing it back!

I love how you've found the really important details that many people without media and marketing literacy education wouldn't be able to recognize. It gives people a lot more access to the intention, time, and craft that these artists put into their work when it can be so easily overlooked. As a fan of these artists, thank you for outlining why their work should be much more appreciated for the calculous that they've put into their products. You've found a new subscriber here! I think it also is so on trend. Other albums were just not on with the current trends we see in fashion etc. It's y2k, it's the pop people has been missing.
the thing is, none of this marketing idea would have worked if she wasn't already famous. Like, I'm a very little artist, I clicked on this video to see if I could use some of her tricks to find inspiration to promote my next track. And I can't. As a little artiste, if I do this kind of artwork, I will be perceived as a no budget/no talent/no credibility artist. If I choose a color fromevery day, nobody will be like "oh this purple car makes me think of this little artist with 400 listeners on spotify" and I can't buy a wall in the middle of Paris. So, this marketing is creativ, but it only works bc their fame and their money give them the possibility to think outside the box and make it work. If that makes sense ?
Yeah, but at the same time Charli didn’t come out of nowhere all of a sudden, she built up her reputation and artistic credit over more than a decade and started off in the rave scene I think? Plus she’s written so many hit songs for other artists and had so many truly innovative moves and collaborations and experimentations with other artists and genres - I feel like she’s not been afraid to try new things. All I’m saying is that she built up the reputation that made brat possible. You’re right that it probably wouldn’t have had so much success if it was a debut album from a small artist, but she’s the one who got herself there. So if you want to learn things for yourself, maybe look more at how she grew her career and her loyal (even if relatively small) fanbase?
@@user-ed7et3pb4o i completly agree, I think I was just spontaneously commenting this because I thought maybe other people could have unreasonnable expectations for their musical project without having the same conditions and possibilities. But you gave me a great advice by saying I should look at what she used to do when she started, I'm gonna do my research ;)
Amazing video, amazing recap, thank you so much. Yesterday I was listening to Kesha's Joyride and my playlist shuffled to Vroom Vroom right after. A collab between them would be an absolute bop. And yes, complete the summer 2024 powerpuff girls trifecta
I started following you from Instagram and the first part of the Brat album / roll out and now I can't stop listening to you and the stories. This was truly a genius ride. Looking forward to watching more videos of you.
I think Charlie gets major inspiration from Marina and the Diamonds - visuals and her public demeanor, the way she communicates with her fans and the media
Timing was smart. She stayed the hell away from Bey and Tay. Her songs are much needed escapes. The story is good, but I didn’t even pay much attention to the story until after I bumped the songs for weeks. I don’t even know how I ran into it, but I’m bumpin that (not that, but that)
I'm studying singing and I want to be a popstar, this gave me such an insane boost to take care of the marketing side of my job when it'll get serious. Planning years in advance starting from now lol
That’s what we actually need it, short song in a good album, Dua Lipa, Billie, Charlie made it like that, a short album with really good song without overwhelming their fandom… and yes, if you thought of her I don’t have to say more. This year is bean great for music, personally so far my favorites are Clancy by Twenty’s One Pilots and of course BRAT
I’ve been listening to her ever since her song from The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack like literally 10 years ago. How has it taken so long for people to just now find her? I don’t get it
This neon green was used by Käärijä at the 2023 Eurovision, and it became huge (Käärijä-kesä meaning Käärijä-summer). Everywhere in Finland (and even fans overseas), you had people suddenly dressing in neon green, painting their nails, knitting random neon green things.
I think we're also in a new era that we want to hear from girls. You can tell when men have their hands in it and it dilutes the art. Look at Katy Perry's Woman's World. What even was that?
Damnnn algorythm got me this time!! You got a new sub here :). Great video and I see you are kind of new content creator (if I am not mistaken). Keep up the good work :D
i got into charli around the time her self titled came out and i saw fantanos review of it. before then i wasnt a big fan of alot of pop having just lived through recession pop era...shes now my favorite artist. while i prefer her more hyper pop esque albums (especially How Im Feeling Now,....masterpiece) i loooove brat and im so glad shes getting the attention she deserves. i waas a little sad when Crash came out because I just didn't think that album was good at all but wow she realllly hit it out of the park
, I genuinely will only play gta eclipse if I am in my brat mobile literally only blasting brat. I’m hooked, it’s in my veins, I wake up as Julia fox most days and it’s getting really hard to be this bad!
i think for an album cover, you need a theme throughout the album, like charli's green. and it should appear everywhere. but you also should keep it somewhat simple, so someone could instantly remember it. i cannot think of anything besides the bear in the graduation album cover, but in blonde, i know everything. you should also focus on a pattern and story like melanie does. summary: keep it simple, recognizable, and add a story.
Talk about the collab with DRESS TO IMPRESS (that game has millions of players, and the brat update was THE best update for the game) ((before the update, i only knew the apple song from yt shorts, but then i became a fan of 360, von dutch + guess))
My theory about kesha being written on the truck was to "promote" kesha in a sense.. like you said we need a comeback from kesha, and by charli mentioning her name, she got people moving and talking abt kesha again, which i think is another genius marketing strategy for kesha LMAO
Everything in this video was soooo well explained and knowledgable! Can’t wait for the Sabrina one. Don’t forget about her cut out hearts wardrobe trend hehe. 🥰 Subscribed!
Loving the video! Ur amazing to listen to. Heard you talk about never experiencing an artist releasing their deluxe 3 days later. Reminder me of Riri’s “ANTi” which deluxe version dropped the day after jejsjdjsj
She's been working on her craft for a long time, so to hear her music in its raw themes mixed with the skill she's been honing, her music just gets better with time and this is a culmination of that.
The color marketing is genius. As a European I remember last year's Eurovision, with the iconic "Cha Cha Cha" from Kaarija (don't have the proper characters on hand, sorry Finns) everyone's association for the neon green color was "cha cha cha green"
I didn't follow any of the promo. For me the most captivating part is just how she named the versions of the songs and the album and the cover art. It really captures this attitude of "I don't care about doing what's expected. My music slaps and I don't need to agonize over how I present it." It seems so effortless. Even though I'm sure the shade of green was very intentionally selected. But it is still much simpler than an elaborate photoshoot. And instead of coming up with a name for the deluxe that doesn't sound like a cash grab she went very literal. Because deluxe versions are so common in the Pop world. Every album gets one to boost streams. And it usually is only like 3 extra songs but the artists try to sell it as something extra special by choosing an alternate cover image and coming up with increasingly ridiculous names to make it sound like something extra special. But Charli said "No. I'm just telling it like it is." and that's just badass. And the remix versions of the songs don't even get a cohesive naming scheme "The girl, so confusing version with lorde", "Guess featuring Billie Eilish" etc. Female pop music is usually such a polished and artificial place where everything is carefully put together and everything needs to be very fake and selling a fantasy of a world that's in perfect harmony, where everything is cohesive and all the capitalistic sides of the music industry are carefully obscured. The genius of brat is that Charli does none of that. She focuses on the facts and the music and sells this nonchalant bratty attitude in everything that surrounds this album AND in the lyrics. But the brat she sells isn't afraid to get messy. She's not this perfect polished doll. She can be, when she wants. But she's usually just extremely honest and direct.
still can't get over her opening for Paramore in 2013 and being pissed off at the audience for not singing along to I Love It, screaming "you all know this song, I wrote this fucking song." most awkward concert experience I've ever had 😂
PLEASEEE go give the Spotify a follow and give the pod a 5-star rating!!! It helps me out sooo much♥

I love ur videos sm pls never stop
AHHH thank you!!! I am soo excited for this channel and to continue making videos weekly :)
Amazing video, amazing recap, thank you so much.
Yesterday I was listening to Kesha's Joyride and my playlist shuffled to Vroom Vroom right after. A collab between them would be an absolute bop.
And yes, complete the summer 2024 powerpuff girls trifecta
Thank you for breaking this down! I see a lot of value in this video and appreciate you sharing it! ❤
She released a concept album. And concept albums are always a go for me (from someone who rarely listens to pop music)
Thank you so much for breaking this down. It is just so amazing and you really hit all of the points so well.
I started following you from Instagram and the first part of the Brat album / roll out and now I can't stop listening to you and the stories. This was truly a genius ride.
Looking forward to watching more videos of you.
I absolutely love this vid, you're such a vibe, keep it up!!
Great video, very informative and not just a fan worshiping its idol with subjective ideas and unfounded theories
I don’t even know how I ran into it, but I’m bumpin that (not that, but that)
your analysis is brilliant!
I'm studying singing and I want to be a popstar, this gave me such an insane boost to take care of the marketing side of my job when it'll get serious. Planning years in advance starting from now lol
I'm living for this album and era. Especially the remixes!!!
Nick this breakdown was incredible. I really need this right now as we work on my artist Dria Thornton's new rollout. Your the best!!!!
Yesss Chappell, Charli, and Sabrina summer :D
love this!! great video! (+ props for the camera set up!)
I'm surprised she wasnt this famous before. All her albums so far have been cool and has a sound so unique
, I genuinely will only play gta eclipse if I am in my brat mobile literally only blasting brat. I’m hooked, it’s in my veins, I wake up as Julia fox most days and it’s getting really hard to be this bad!
She shows so much authenticity, creativity and capturing the cultural Zeitgeist in the edgiest way ever ❤
Thank you for your video! Love it! Musicology pro!
Honestly i love the energy in this video, it really sucks me in!
Also, the music is just freaking great.
i think for an album cover, you need a theme throughout the album, like charli's green. and it should appear everywhere. but you also should keep it somewhat simple, so someone could instantly remember it. i cannot think of anything besides the bear in the graduation album cover, but in blonde, i know everything. you should also focus on a pattern and story like melanie does. summary: keep it simple, recognizable, and add a story.
Talk about the collab with DRESS TO IMPRESS (that game has millions of players, and the brat update was THE best update for the game) ((before the update, i only knew the apple song from yt shorts, but then i became a fan of 360, von dutch + guess))
I like the brat album cover. I never heard of Charli until I saw the album, it stood out out of all of the other albums next to it.
this is a well explained video and offers ppl insights on the cultural impact of Brat. subscribed to you 🖤
Listening to you is quite refreshing, love from South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️
My theory about kesha being written on the truck was to "promote" kesha in a sense.. like you said we need a comeback from kesha, and by charli mentioning her name, she got people moving and talking abt kesha again, which i think is another genius marketing strategy for kesha LMAO
Isn't Charli friends with someone who works with Dr. Luke (Kim Petras)
Everything in this video was soooo well explained and knowledgable! Can’t wait for the Sabrina one. Don’t forget about her cut out hearts wardrobe trend hehe. 🥰 Subscribed!
EXCELLENT breakdown
Loving the video! Ur amazing to listen to. Heard you talk about never experiencing an artist releasing their deluxe 3 days later. Reminder me of Riri’s “ANTi” which deluxe version dropped the day after jejsjdjsj
Great example! I had completely forgot about that one
Thank you for this well done video 🧡 I’m learning and taking notess
She's been working on her craft for a long time, so to hear her music in its raw themes mixed with the skill she's been honing, her music just gets better with time and this is a culmination of that.
Amazing video, one of the few channels i subscribed to
This makes me so happy to hear. I am so grateful you're here 💞
I love the other video you posted about brat, so was super excited to see this video in my timeline
YAYY! I am so happy to hear that. I have loveddd starting this channel and it gives me so much joy to make these videos :)
The color marketing is genius.
As a European I remember last year's Eurovision, with the iconic "Cha Cha Cha" from Kaarija (don't have the proper characters on hand, sorry Finns) everyone's association for the neon green color was "cha cha cha green"
This video just influenced me to finally listen to brat😭
Brat reminds me so much of Fergies solo debute The Dutchess in 2006 or so. Its like Fergie 2.0.
It didn’t remind me of Fergie at all, Brat is club music/dance music.
I didn't follow any of the promo. For me the most captivating part is just how she named the versions of the songs and the album and the cover art.
It really captures this attitude of "I don't care about doing what's expected. My music slaps and I don't need to agonize over how I present it."
It seems so effortless.
GREAT video, obsessed with era. xxx
The boiler room setting reminded me a lot of the Last Supper❤
Commenting to boost! Love your stuff!!
My new favorite TH-camr!
I'M SO HONORED
as someone about to go into uni for marketing, more marketing content plz 🙏
Oh I’m gonna make SOO many videos about marketing. One of my favorite topics :)
I’ve been hoping for a Charlie/Kesha collab!! Brat green and Joyride red! Christmas album?!
Melanie also released her Deluxe version after 3 days 😭😭 i thought 3 days was normal?
so how do you feel about the spring breakers remix featuring kesha?
17:34 well youre right
still can't get over her opening for Paramore in 2013 and being pissed off at the audience for not singing along to I Love It, screaming "you all know this song, I wrote this fucking song." most awkward concert experience I've ever had 😂
In love with your channel!! This is interesting
Super informative u got a new sub gangy
You must love Jade right? Angel of My Dreams is FANTASTIC --- she's going to have SUCH a good album. Would be a great Charli collab too...
super random but your outfit is AMAZING
