      Who cares. In a nuclear attack, 90% of those living or working in major cities would be dead within the first half hour, with 90% of the survivors dead within a week. Even in rural areas, the chance of survival is less than 25%, again with the majority of those dead within a week or two.

      Actually, on September 11, 2001 they showed themselves masters in self-organization, as long as they were not working for the Giuliani Administration (which thought that one of the Twin Towers was a fine place for emergency HQ after someone else attacked it i 1993). They showed themselves again during a blackout. The 2020 riots were a disgrace...but for some reason the cops were more interested in kettling protestors than keeping looters away from Fifth Avenue.

      @@markkrause4407 Sorry if you think the question was stupid, but nuclear war scenarios called for numerous odd behaviors. For example did you know that if a nuclear strike was confirmed, federal prison guards were supposed to mow down prisoners in their cells? It was though to be more 'humane' to shoot them all rather than have them dying of starvation or radiation. The other assumed danger was such an attack would somehow allow the prisoners to escape, or the warden might throw open the prison gates and set them free feeling guilty for locking them up at such a time.

    People are no longer being given instructed what to do...there used to be bomb shelters and air raid sirens...those were repurposed as tornado shelters and tornado sirens...the ones that werent dispensed with...now they have no signs up anywhere telling you where to go in cities...people should head underground and stay there for 30 days...all emergency supplies should be kept in your basement and if there is time everyone should go home at the first sign of nuclear war...all store owners should be prepared to shelter customers in their basements...it is inadequate in most cases but books with instructions on what to do should be part of your emergency supplies

    Wow. Great glimpses of what NYC was once like. A drill like this could never take place today in NYC because they would have to explain it in 70 different languages first. NYC has deteriorated so much over the past 15 years which is a real shame because at one point it had really turned itself around, but that’s when there was a Republican as mayor.

      This isn't strictly true. There is lots of research to show that underground shelters would have been quite effective against the yields of the bombs being produced during the 1950's. The jacket covering is to prevent two things; Firstly, the gamma radiation which is exposed during the blast can be largely stopped by any thin material (look up the 'leaves of Hiroshima') and secondly, a large number of casualties in the blast would have been those injured by flying debris, usually glass, caused by the initial shock wave. Any sort of protection from flying material would have protected the skin and reduced injuries.

    model 5s would not be remotely loud enough for a city like New York. Given an average Manhattan background noise of 70-85 decibels, a Model 5 has a sound "loss per distance doubled" of 12 decibels on average in a city, actually any siren in a city has that loss. At 100 feet, the rating for a Model 5 single tone is 113 decibels. Given the Federal signal equation above, the sound would already be at only 77 decibels at 400 feet... in order to be 100% effective they would have to be mounted practically at street light level, which many in other cities were. Baltimore, MD, for example had model 5s in the suburbs of the city and firehouses. Never on rooftops higher than 5 stories. Those rooftops were reserved for the 11 thunderbolts that were placed on the higher rooftops that overlooked the city. 11 thunderbolt 1000s, 3 of them jailbar, 50 model 5s, and 17 foster steam sirens.

      Mostly in the 50s and early 60s , the Cold War. As a child, I lived through all of the school drills, the preparations of our basement as a shelter with enough provisions in case we had to live down there, and hearing those frightening sirens as practice drills and praying the next time we heard them it was not the real thing. We lived about 5 miles outside Washington, DC which was considered ground zero for a nuclear strike or an attack of any kind. We lived a block off the main highway and there were signs posted that read "In the event of enemy attack this highway will be closed to all traffic except civil defense and military."

    • @MrScottie68
      @MrScottie68 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about the outdoor drill but I do know for a fact that NYC public schools still performed nuclear attack drills well into the 1970s. The signal in school was repeated 3 or 4 blasts on sort of a horn sound signal .......we quickly lined up in rows next to our desks and went into the hallway where we would drop to the floor and face the wall with hands clamped around the back of the neck.

    The thing about it was that everyone really cooperated with the authorities and took cover. No riots or looting. We were facing the distinct possibility of ANNIHILATION. I really regret that I am not a scientist so I can invent a time machine and go back in time to live in those days once again.
    Nowadays people in general are extremely selfish and don't care about anything. Today's PEOPLE are just simply SHEEP that are being lead to their slaughter. They don't have any will or ability to seek out the truth and to resist a corrupt government. They are CONTROLLED BY THE MEDIA AND THE INTERNET.
    Yes I would love to go back in time where there are no internet, social media PLATFORMS, Karens and ILL MANNERED PEOPLE who are heavily addicted to their cellphones.
