Should members of the public sign a petition to request Minister Josephine Teo to step down from Singapore's Parliament for this serious, potentially criminal measure taken pre-emptively by ACRA, causing furore over the fiasco?
Hospitals tag their patients. Clinics have been using NRIC numbers with our knowledge and agreement. No one says the NRIC number is a Secret, but it is definitely Private and based on Need to Know, Need to Release Basis with NRIC holders agreement. Singaporeans have the Right to protect their own privacy and safeguard themselves from scammers. How do you blame Singaporeans for losing trust?
Whether an agency, or a bank, or a clinic, or a telco, or a school uses NRIC numbers to authenticate privileged information is a policy issue BETWEEN the user/client/patient and the service provider. Sharing the NRIC numbers of the user/client/patient with the public or any third/outside party WITHOUT CONSENT is a legal matter under the PDPA. Indranee was a lawyer. Strange, she couldn't tell the difference. The key question here is: DID ACRA VIOLATE THE PDPA? If yes, it's a felony. The Minister for Law and Home Affairs should address this in parliament.
What rubbish is that?? NRIC is bonded by each individual! Whether it's ACRA or Registry of Birth and Death makes no difference Deliverymen entering a private sector also needs to submit his identity for proof. So, since it's not under Birth and Death Registry, then why does it need to mask the first few digits? You debate on PDPA on parliament, and now you can just happily overwrite it without going thru debate? Is this democracy? So now private firm must changed its visitor manning system again to customise your old concepts? What talkng you..
OCBC used to use NRIC as login username in the past. It had stopped this practice years ago. I am not sure if it was due to PDPA regulations or that they had realised that this was fundamentally flawed by themselves. It is amazing how Singpass is still using NRIC number for authentication all these years.
Is this unmasking a genuine mistake ? Grave blunder or Intentionally done for a purpose? This is Unacceptable breach there can no excuses or justification. This Reckless breach by those in charge should be held accountable and penalised accordingly. Resign!
Talking about clarifying use of NRIC numbers, it is clear that the Government has not taken steps to protect personal data as laid down in Data Protection Act. It is the usual practice for medicine dispensers to ask the collectors of medicine to say or to declare his or her IC numbers verbally for verification purposes. As such all the persons around him or her could hear his or her IC numbers. So what does it matter whether it is masked or unmasked?
These women behind the PAP facade must just take the responsibility of owning up……I do not wish to be misogynistic but it looks like women should not be in politics. The mother figure is distorting the political career and not seems to the relevant in politics. The women’s characteristics is not required in politics. Many a time they are disgusting when they try very hard to justify their decisions. In short, please do not tarnish the PAP name. The harder they try the worse the final picture becomes.
Think she is the fall gal. ACRA is an agency under MAS. All MDDI did was issue a circular (essentially an advisory, not an instruction) to advise the agencies not to use NRIC to authenticate privileged information. ACRA unmasked the NRIC numbers to increase transparency for those who wanted to conduct background checks on the company owner/director. I fail to see how the circular has anything to do with that. Who gave the order for ACRA to unmask? JT certainly has no power over ACRA.

@@michael8372 Thanks, very concise.
It's outright violation of the PDPA since holders neither have the knowledge OR consented.
Pay so much for a Minister and still have this kind of basic problems and cost the taxpayers so much money.
Please take responsibility for your actions.
JT has been demoted from her position in PAP. She may not be standing in the next GE.
Apology without consequence is as good aa no apology.

SG's Kamala Harris.
Most Singaporeans use NRIC numbers as their Singpass user IDs, is it safe?
Give them a break, I am sure they all want a happy ending to this unfortunate mishap.

Don't worry, they still get paid millions despite this unfortunate mishap.
